Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar
Published in Paperback by Univ of British Columbia (1998)
Author: Edwin G. Pulleyblank
Amazon base price: $36.95
Average review score:

Outstanding and much-needed
In the _Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar_, Pulleyblank provides a much-needed, well, "outline" of the grammar of the Chinese classics. My favorite aspect of this book is its extensive examples, which help the reader of classic texts bridge the gap between the orderly world of grammar books and the always-disorderly world of actual texts.

Of course, one can always wish for more, e.g., I might hope for more on the usages of the various "prepositional" particles. Nevertheless, this is by far the best book of this sort I have seen (in a number of years of working with classical Chinese), and a vital aid to the student of classical Chinese.

Finally, a comprehensive grammar of Wenyan.
I have been studying the Classical Chinese language for one year now and have been suffering through several inadequate grammar references. This wonderful book is the first comprehensive treatment of the grammar of the ancient form of Chinese used by the great philosophers like Confucius and Mencius. It uses modern grammar terminology and examples from the Classics to systematize this very complex language. Bravo.. Mr. Pulleyblank. You have strided through a field in which many have feared to tred! Anthony Barbieri-Low Harvard University Regional Studies:East Asia Program

"Partners" a must read!
I am a legally blind former Dairy Herdsnam. I was enthralled by the stories in this book, and grateful for the info given about the different guide dog schools. It helped make my choice of which school to apply for a dog easier. I think this book should be required reading for anyone entereing the special needs/education professions!

A marvelous study of the assistance dog movement.
As someone who suffers from a disability (epilepsy), it was a pleasure to learn that not only wasn't I alone, but that my seizure alert dog is part of a greater whole. The assistance dog movement is growing and through this book more people will learn of its benefits.

Pensions in the Public Sector

Sine - qua - non treatise on Pensions
This is a sine qua non treatise for anybody having to deal with the subject of pensions. Edited admirably by actuarial scholars Mitchell, representing academia, and Hustead, representing private industry, the book covers all aspects of pensions in the private, public and academic sectors. The editors also write several individual chapters on their areas of super - expertise. Actually the most useful and comprehensive chapter, the one on governmental and military pensions, is written by the team Mr. and Mrs. Hustead. Mrs. Hustead is an expert attached to the White Houses' office of the budget. The most interesting chapter, this by Mr. Hustead alone, is the one with his lucubration on the pensions system, sometimes debacle, of the District of Columbia, Washington DC, the capital city of the USA. Although it was not the obvious intention of the author, it shows in a very peculiar and amazing way the vicissitudes of such a political entity that fully justifies the usage of vehicular license plates with the proclamation of "Taxation Without Representation" kindly exemplified by firmer President Clinton in the First Limousine, and, of course, immediately rejected by the Bush's administration. Finally, the selection of the goddess Minerva for the cover, is a master, and artistic, stroke.

Publisher's Comment
What can be done to help public sector pension plans perform more efficiently, and thereby enhance old-age security? In much of the world, public sector pensions are in deep trouble, undermining economic policy and threatening retiree well being. By and large, North American public pension systems have performed better, boasting tremendous assets and offering reasonable retiree benefits. Even here, however, military and civil service systems are not doing as well. This volume takes stock of public pensions in the US and Canada, offering lessons and highlighting challenges these financial institutions will face in the coming decades.

The first Pension Research Council study of public pensions in a quarter-century tackles these topics with an impressive group of international experts from the actuarial, legal, and economic fields. Contributors illustrate how reform options vary across uniformed employees, teachers, legislators and the judiciary, municipal and state employees, and military personnel. This study will be invaluable to taxpayers and their representatives, and those responsible for both public and private sector pensions.

Olivia S. Mitchell is the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans Professor of Insurance and Risk Management, and Executive Director of the Pension Research Council at the Wharton School. Edwin Hustead is Senior Vice President in charge of governmental actuarial and benefits consulting at the HayHuggins Washington, D.C. office.

excellent choice
Our kids loved this book. Explained really well the science of light defraction, with a nice history of other cultures beliefs on the history of rainbows. Even included the biblical perspective. An excellent book to use with a unit study on light and rainbows.

A beautifully illustrated book!
This book not only tells you everything that you might want to know about rainbows, but shows through amazing and interesting illustrations the rainbows many facets. A great way to get your child curious about the natural world. Also check out "The Big Dipper and You" also by the Krupps.

If you liked "Saving Private Ryan" you will love this book!
Written from the view of the combat infantryman this book is a griping account of the US 36th. Division's disasterous battle at the Rapido River in the winter of 1944. The author spent two years researching and editing 140 accounts from the soldiers in the line companies to the officers in division headquarters. The result is an epic account of a brave but futile effort "where victory was less likely than death." This book has both the documentation the serious student of World WarII desires combined with the easy style of one of grandad's tales. Best if read in one sitting (Just over 100 pages of text) for maximum effect. This is a verbal "Saving Private Ryan."

Very informative book about the 36th Division!
The book is based on the stories given by WWII veterans of "Texas" 36th Division who were at the Rapido River. The Rapido River was a slaying of brave Texas National Guard Soldiers. The Nazi's had an advantage over the 36th, killing a large number of the brave Americans who were following the orders of General Mark Clark. Clark's action were investagated by congress, and to this day, the information about the battle is top-secret. The Autor, Lee Carraway Smith started this book as a report in a college history report, but she got so involved in the story, she wanted the people to hear the veterans side of the story. The books contains a special section of Pictures, Goverment Documents, and historical images of this bloody battle. This book will inform the public about this "unknown" but true World War II battle.

Some desperate glory : the diary of a young officer, 1917

This book will rivet your attention!!!
"Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori." This is the diary of a young man who is compelled to learn that the preceeding is an "old lie," and who survives the lesson while serving in the blood and excrement of WWI.

Grim Diary of a young soldier
Grim diary of a 19 year old lieutenant in the British army in 1917. Details dull and often grueling routine of the trench soldier. A few hellish moments- a rat chewing on a German corpse, Lt.Vaughn's sharing a shellhole with a rotting corpse for a half-day, Vaughn dropping his well-earned steak in three feet of trench mud, nervous men revealing that they felt a little "windy". Well-worth reading.

Superb book on a great art collection
This beautiful book offers large, generous reproductions, many in color, and expert commentary on an impressive surrealist art collection. It has the best presentation of Joseph Cornell's work among art books I have seen-- even among those devoted entirely to the artist. Of course, several other greats are featured, including Miro, Dali, Brauner, Ernst, Magritte, Breton, Lam.... If you like this kind of art, do yourself a favor: buy the book and take a trip to downtown Chicago and the Art Institute.

Beautiful book displays amazing collection!
This wonderful book showcases one of the world's best collections of 20th. century art. Of special fascination are the works of American artist Joseph Cornell. The Bergmans are the pre-eminent Cornell collectors as the breadth and unsurpassed quality of his work showcased herein demonstrates. The photographs are exquisitely rendered and Ades' commentary is incisive. This book stands as a worthy complement to the collection housed in the Art Institute of Chicago

Treasure
Awesome little book. Very helpful for the person who is starting a small business, great passages to better one self in many different are areas. Helps you know why others think and act the way they do. It put a lot of things into perspective and explaned many actions and reactions of other people. Every business owner, boss, manager and parent should have a copy of this.

TREASURE: Uncovering Patterns & Principles For Prosperity
Dr. Edwin Louis Cole's newest book, Treasure: Uncovering Patterns and Principles That Create Success, is the best book, a "must read," under 100 pages I have ever read.

Finally, a down to earth, practical lesson, for anyone who wants more out of their "one shot" at life. Inspirational for those who feel they have not lived up to their potential, or for those who've tried their best only to find the success and fulfillment they've desired has somehow, even mysteriously, remained outside their grasp. The "mystery" ends with this book.

Or, for those who have acquired all the trappings of what we call success, only to discover that prosperity and success are not synonymous...that problems and challenges, and needs, can exist in our lives regardless of how much money we have made, or how successful we appear. For these individuals, Dr. Cole, identifies and clarifies the missing pieces that create true prosperous living...the lifestyle that each and every person on the face of the earth invwardly longs for.

Especially great chapters...The Basis For a Great Life...Seek True Wealth...and The Nature of Money.

This book is so good, I've purchased 50 of them, to give to businessmen, professionals, and anyone else who won't settle for "more out of life"...but who wants "the most out of life." Best gift I could give anyone. Thanks Dr. Cole.
