The First Hollywood Musicals: A Critical Filmography of 171 Features, 1927-1932
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (1996)
Author: Edwin M. Bradley
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

This volume is both useful and entertaining.
THE FIRST HOLLYWOOD MUSICALS by Edwin M. Bradley covers the period from 1927 to 1932, when sound films supplanted silents in Hollywood. THE JAZZ SINGER (1927) is celebrated as the first talkie and Bradley traces the first group of Hollywood musicals through Al Jolson's pioneering effort, early operettas, stage adaptations, college musicals, and the All-Star revues which most of the major studios mounted. For each of the 171 entries, Bradley provides full cast and credits, a summary of the plot, critiques of them based on his own viewing contemporary reviews, and makes an effort to place each film in its historic context. This volume is a good companion to Richard Barrios' SONG IN THE DARK (1995, Oxford University Press) which covers more or less the same subject and period; Barrios provides more social insight, but Bradley provides more hard information. One feature of THE FIRST HOLLYWOOD MUSICALS which is particularly welcome is a listing for each film giving every song and the performers who sang them. He also provides valuable information about non-musical performances in revue films. Included are a couple of appendices, the most interesting listing musical short films from the period covered. Much musical film history was made between THE JAZZ SINGER and 42ND STREET, and Bradley's fine volume helps the enthusiast and the casual fan sort out much of it.

The First Hollywood Musicals: 1927-1932
For any true lover of early Hollywood Musicals, this book is the best organized and updated work around. In particular the author not only reviews the early works, but also relates whenever possible the availability of the work, whether it in fact may be a lost work or if the are any remaining copies left (even in private hands). This book is a must have for any movie lover seriously interested in the early hollywood musical

Great memory for details, humerous stories.
I enjoyed this book for personal reasons, but aside from that, I thought the author's perspective gave the stories depth to many of the impersonal aspects of the war. He is a great story teller, and adds that personal detail that makes them come to life. I recommend this book to young and old - in fact to anyone who wants to learn about this time period through the eyes of a young surgeon who served on five fronts and lived to tell about it.

A beautifully crafted, highly enjoyable book.
An able and highly enjoyable job of getting the facts out with the tone of our shared WW-II experiences. Am impressed with the precision of writing. Moore has done all of us a huge favor, and I, for one, am most grateful. Brig. General Robert A. Duffy, USAF (Ret.)

Happy Hour(s)
I came across this book by a simple twist of fate.
While I was shopping for books on Amazon, I came
across Mr.Large's book. I read the description of
the text and felt compelled to order.
I am so glad that I did!
I found that it really touched upon serious issues
found in many intimate human relationships. It provoked
serious contemplation and aroused me. And I walked away, not
only touched but enlightened.
Thank you.

This book is fabulous!
One of my friends reccommended this book to me because one of my classmates is Ed's (the author) best friend. I've heard Ed sing before, but I didn't know he was an author. I read this book in one night. It was so interesting and the story just flowed perfectly, and it's one of those books that can be read again and again and it just gets better. I definitely reccommend this book to everyone!

Frontier Living

Indispensable for adults as well as young readers
The subtitle says it all: "An Illustrated Guide to Pioneer Life in America, Including Log Cabins, Furniture, Tools, Clothing, and More." From about 1725 to the closing of the frontier, Tunis examines dozens of aspects of American frontier life in this sequel to his "Colonial Living," and even touches on history (the little-known Black Hawk War, the Santa Fe trade, etc.). His clear, detailed pen-and-ink sketches provide a perfect visual accompaniment to written commentary. (Check out the household articles on pp. 24-5, the tub mill on p. 40, the spinning wheels and loom on pp. 46-8, and--my favorite--the elementary prairie well-drilling rig on p. 157, to take just a few examples.) As is often the case with juvenile social histories, he manages to touch on things you don't learn in books written for an adult audience, so the volume should be useful to researchers of every age. My one complaint is the positioning of the page numbers, which are buried in the crack of the binding! This is a book I was delighted to add to my collection, and I recommend it to everyone who has an interest in pre-1900 America.

All aspects of daily life on the American frontier
Frontier Living illuminates all aspects of daily life on the American frontier, from the log cabin to the ranchero. Black and white illustrations by the author provide embellishments to text which describe frontier daily life; from tools and clothing to food. A recommended pick for students of early American frontier days.

A Classic Help From the Beginning
I was given this book by my dad when I made my high school golf team and I can honestly say it's the one thing that got my game on track. From the minute I read the first page, I was hooked. His lessons make so much sense, and his love for the game enlightens you as you read it. From the greenside bunker shots, to the "waggle" before a swing, this book has it all. The choice of words Penick uses and his approach to teaching are very unique, yet beautiful. He teaches the person, not the swing. I reccommend this book to anyone who wants to better their game as well as their life. A MUSTREAD FOR GOLFERS!

You must add this book to your Penick collection.
If you enjoyed Harvey's other books, you'll also enjoy this one. My wife ordered it for my birthday, and I couldn't put it down. There are more interesting anecdotes and golf wisdoms from golf's greatest all-time teacher. Like his other books, you feel as if you're sitting with him in his golf cart under the shade of a big old pecan tree at his beloved Austin Country Club. It's a quick read, and the stories he tells will stay with you on the golf course forever. Thanks, Harvey.

Incidents in the life of Maya archaelogist as told to Winifred Veronda

Mayan archaeology brought to life
Delightful and absorbing account of the life of Edwin Shook (1911-2000), one of the early Mayan archeologists. During Shook's first field work at Uaxactun, the Mayan workers whispered that the archaeolgists must think that the site was important because they had named it Washington after the US capital. The book is full of interesting anecdotes like this one. Shook's life was extremely varied and included work during the second world war as agent X 7 and head of a quinine growing operation. Throughout the book, Shook's good humor and zest for life shine through, although he doesn't mince words in his criticism of administrative bundling and unsympathetic colleagues.

Mayan archaeology brought to life
Delightful and absorbing tales from the life of Edwin Shook (1911-2000), who did some of the early fieldwork at many Mayan archeological sites. Shook's first field work was at Uaxactun, the earliest Mayan site known at the time. The Mayan workers at the site whispered that the archeologists must think the site was extremely important because they had named it "Washington" after the US capital. Like this anecdote, the book is filled with good and varied stories, including Shook's work in Guatemala during the second world war as agent X-7 and as head of a project to grow quinine trees. In this "as told to" book Shook's enthusiasm and good humor shine through, although he doesn't mince words in describing the acerbic personalities of some colleagues and directors.

Engrossing "inside" history of Western Europe in WW II.
This is a very engaging book -- from both a historical and a personal standpoint. Excellent story of what was really happening to both people and countries in Western Europe. Important reading for people like me who did not personally experience WW II.

A memorable love story during post-World War II in Europe.
I was compelled to read every word of this love story about two people during their humanitarian, relief work in war torn Europe after World War II. In the format of copies of actual letters between "Red" in Poland and his love in France and other countries, they are finally united.
