Now you'll know what makes a greath journalist!
Before, Daniel Schorr was simply a figure on my tv or a voice on my radio. Reading this book I have finally met Daniel Schorr. Now I know what makes a great journalist!

Daniel Schorr - a journalist for the ages!
I have enjoyed listening to Daniel Schorr on National Public Radio for many years. I am so glad to find a collection of his writings that is both insightful and fun to read. This collection highlights some of the best this extraordinary journalist has to offer. Particularly enjoyable is his detailing of the Nixon Watergate affair - a scandal Mr. Schorr was very much a part of uncovering. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the media, current events, and how journalism has developed over the past forty years. A great book!

A terrific showcase of America's most respected journalist
This is a fantastic collection. Showcases one of America's most respected journalists. If you ever wanted to really knows what makes a journalist tick - read this collection. The University of California, Hastings College of the Law should be commended for spearheading this project.

Great Review from ForeWordreviews.com
Everyone knows that cows yearn for that greener grass on the other side of the fence. In this lively picture book, Katie, a bored cow, is no exception. Her sites are set, however, on more distant pastures: the moon. Inspired by Farmer Beth's dances around the farm, the barnyard animals suggest a space ballet, and cram themselves into a homemade rocket built from cans and glue. The lack of gravity on the moon makes dancing ballet, the Watusi, and the Mashed Potato "udderly great," and even Katie's tight fit in a crater cannot dampen the mood of the lunar merriment.

Everyone also knows that the other side of the fence is not always as fulfilling. Katie soon begins to miss her own pastures. Along with the donkey, turkey, duck, sheep, cat, and other animals, she heads back home, their incredible journey unbeknownst to their sleeping farmer. Although now content in her barn, Katie appreciates the adventure that made her value her true home.

Matthew Gollub, an award-winning children's author, tells this humorous romp through rhyming text, with detailed, action-packed illustrations that add to the amusement. While the rhymes may come across as forced in some places when reading the text, an accompanying CD creates an experience that young children will find entertaining. With appropriate pacing, a variety of animal voices, and the refrain, "Gobble-gobble, moo-gobble, gobble-haw quack. Moo quack-a quack-a moo. Just like that," the jazzy music will inspire listeners to clap along with the story. It even takes on slower and faster tempos when Katie reaches the moon to reflect the many dances of this talented cow and her friends.

"Gobble, Quack, Moon" could be used by libraries, schools, children's programs, and caregivers to explore farm animals and different forms of dance. Beginning readers can use the CD to follow the text on their own. The CD can also be played separately, simply to enjoy the spirited song and story.

Homeschoolers love this book!
[...]loves Matthew Gollub's books. The illustrations are unique and beautiful and we love the way Matt introduces children to jazz and other forms of music. We highly recommend both "Jazz Fly" and "Gobble, Quack, Moon."

the book that my child actually wants to read at night
The other day my 9 year old son came to me wanting me to read "Gobble, Quack, Moon"
My son was late in learning to read, but the wonderful illustrations and fun music and writing style in "Gobble, Quack, Moon" made him want to read. He pushed himself to try harder so he could see what happens at the end. Now he can read much better after completing this story. Thank you Mr. Gollub for bringing my child into the wonderful world of reading.
Now my son and I will get comfortable on the couch and read this excellent book almost nightly. I am sure my son and I will go on and read the rest of your books.

The old and the new
I truly enjoyed this book. It was written in plain language and seemed very personable to me. It is a true story about Alma's life growing up on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana and how she was deeply influenced by her grandmother Pretty Shield who taught Alma the old ways...she was a grandmother's grandchild. Pretty Shield was pretty smart I think. She had an appreciation for the natural world not seen too much anymore in our modern lives. I found these "old ways" interesting. This has influenced Alma for sure and she is able to reconcile this as well as the hardships of life with her deep Christian beliefs. God Bless you too Alma!

Mine
I truly enjoyed reading the book and learning of my Aunt Alma's point of view. I have grown up hearing of Pretty Shield and truly am blessed with having an aunt that shares her story and pictures.

Understanding Indian Culture and Traditions
A wonderful book! While much of the poverty and oppression of Indian people is painful to read, one can see the wonderful connections between families in Ms. Snell's book. The love and care for Indian children by extended families is probably one of the greatest reasons the Indian people and traditions have survived. We in the "dominate culture" could learn much to change the disintigration of American families by learning more about Native American people.

When Ali Met Jess
This is an exceptional first effort from a novelist who offers us an entertaining, humorous and insightful view of personal development at a particularly tricky time in life. Milner captures the theme of transition and puts it on the road, as Ali and Jess (basically strangers) are put together on a cross-country road trip, from New York to LA. When they hit the road, the characters couldn’t be more different, though they are both of a certain age (maybe two or three years out of college) and are both churning inside, desperately trying to process their feelings for their respective significant others.

On the road and at various stops along the way, Ali and Jess develop into thoughtful, caring individuals, still imbued with the spontaneity and curiosity of youth, but each questioning prior assumptions about what matters in life. Milner takes this situation and gives his take on how men and women react to the same situation, highlighting not only the differences between Ali and Jess, but also the differences between Ali and Dave (Jess’ boyfriend/fiance) and Jess and Kate (Ali’s girlfriend). The main characters learn from these situations and start to see things very differently from the way they did before they met.

Milner’s use of language is truly unique. His inventive phraseology will certainly ring true to anyone whose lexicon expanded beyond the realm of the OED in college, where new coin is often sociological currency. For me, the nud-I-tay dance was a real highlight. Just like the book jacket promised, I laughed out loud.

Ahead of Its Time
"Guy Critical" is in a genre all its own. It is immediately evident to the reader that Milner's pen has truly grasped the fine art form of the interplay of the communication skills and actions between the sexes. The journey cross-country with Alistair and Jess is a fun, fast-paced adventure which leads the reader to both discover the characters in the novel, and, by totally relating to their thoughts and actions, discover more about his or her self in the process. The true depth and warmth of the characters aided the seemingly effortless flow of the plot. I wholeheartedly recommend this novel to anyone who hopes and believes that some day men and women, if only for just five minutes, will think in harmony. We should be so fortunate to have the opportunity to read the sequel. . .

Highly recommended reading to students of metaphysics
In Heretical Wisdom: The Truths From Within, Matthew Petti provides a unique, informative, and occasionally iconoclastic survey of the stories of secular history and their relationship to the stories to be found in the Bible. Petti then offers the answers he has developed to the scientific mysteries baffling experts for centuries while provocatively connecting them to biblical accounts. The subjects and events addressed range from Neanderthal Man, the Great Pyramid, Sasquatch, and Angels, to The Lost Continent Of Atlantis, Creation, Noah's Ark, The Parting of the Red Sea, The Tower Of Babel, Jesus Christ, and UFOs. Heretical Wisdom is fascinating, original, and highly recommended reading to students of metaphysics, Biblical studies, and the nature of Absolute Truth.

Challenges Religious Belief Systems
Heretical Wisdom will take your mind to places you have never been. It will make you analyze your beliefs and consider new options. This is not light reading, this is based on many years of research.

If you are a Bible scholar, this book will tease your brain unmercifully and challenge your deductive reasoning powers. It will give you something to ponder, it will intrigue your sense of creativity and it will give you some enlightenment in various areas which until know have not really been explained. If on the other hand, you are not familiar with the Bible, this book will most likely make you go buy one so you can do a bit of your own research.

Matthew August Petti discusses many controversial subjects and tries to explain age-old scientific and religious mysteries through an imaginative process. He forms an unequal yolk between evolutionary science and creation.

What Matthew Petti's book does is it makes you think, it makes you wonder, it makes you imagine. It might even make you believe there is a God. What I find even more interesting is his awareness that a belief in God makes humans more intelligent.

Perhaps the author says it best: "To achieve accurate conclusions, we require correct premises. A search beyond our dogmatic religious convictions is entertaining to say the least. This book is Controversial, yet mind expanding. I recommended it for those who are curious, but already have their own belief systems to work from.

This is a highly intellectual work and was perhaps the most complex theory I have every read. I think sometimes it is best not to know everything. That leaves a bit of mystery to life and allows us to exercise our "faith." Science can't prove there is a God, but humans know it deep in their souls. They know that this is not the end of it all, they know that their souls are in fact, eternal.

The religious community will have a few disagreements about various biblical subjects. I did not agree with some of the theories and yet I enjoyed reading this work.

TheRebeccaReview.com

A Fascinating Read
Petti's curiosity, about the mysteries of both secular and biblical history and how they might be related, took him through the monumental task of writing a book that will challenge every reader to make a similar journey of discovery. Confusing notions about historical events, and the miscalculations resulting from them and stubbornly held to or half understood, will be shaken even further, after the reading of Petti's theories. Readers' personal beliefs, in the religious realm, will either be redefined or staunchly reconfirmed. Petti's theories do not stick to those presented by organized religions. They are profound and startling. They cause the reader to think about never-before-heard answers to such things as who built the Great Pyramid? What was the Lost Continent of Atlantis? Was the story of Noah real or imaginary? Who or what is Sasquatch? Are UFOs real or imaginary? Is there life on other planets? What is Absolute Truth? The Power of Faith?

Petti's book is fascinating reading . . . one man's version of the "inside story." I highly recommend it.

The Golden Rendezvous

One of Alistair MacLean's Best Adventure Stories
Alistair MacLean - one of the premier adventure storywriters - is at his best when writing first-person narratives that put his protagonists in perilous situations, and then push them to the limits of physical, emotional, and psychological endurance. His early novels are exciting, full of cliff-hanging situations, and rife with clever "detection" in the classical sense: MacLean plays by the classical detective rules, placing all of the clues in front of the reader, and - at his most cunning - daring the reader to figure out who the criminal mastermind is.

But the detection - and the undertones of "espionage" - are superficial elements used to keep the narrative moving briskly along between action set pieces that pit the protagonist against impossible odds and, very often, against the severest imaginable environmental extremes. By these standards, "The Golden Rendezvous" is one of his better books.

It is an excellent blend of mystery, suspense, clever bluffs and double bluffs, self-deprecating wit, action, and our protagonist's determined efforts to overcome painful injuries and antagonistic environmental extremes.

A luxury cruise ship is hijacked at sea by a master criminal whose intention is not a simple ransoming of the wealthy hostages on board. Exactly what his goal is forms part of the mystery that is left for our hero - the injured First Officer of the ship, John Carter - to ferret out. And to undermine.

"The Golden Rendezvous" finds MacLean at near-top form. The book does not have quite the verve of "The Satan Bug", "The Dark Crusader", or "When Eight Bells Toll", but it comes close. Which - at the high level that MacLean delivers excitement and page-turning suspense - makes for outstanding adventure story reading.

Simply the best!
Alistair Macean is my favourite thriller writer.Golden Rendouvous is a bonafide classic.Just reading this book reveals what a great plotter Maclean was and he always knew how to combine action suspense and he didn't need to write 500, or 10000 pages, unlike the new writers of today. He had a sense of humour as well and i always thought his characters were colourful. Also, though Maclean did his research thorougly, his books were never bogged down in details, unlike many authors today.Golden Rendevous is a must read!go and read it and make your day!

Classic adventure story about an ocean hijacking
Alistair MacLean was one of the best adventure writers of all time. He does it all on the strength of plot; style and characterization are nearly non-existent, but they aren't the reason you read MacLean books. I dare say that virtually every major adventure plot is covered in one of his novels, and his influence is such that subsequent authors have paid homage to scenes of his. (For example, there's a scene in Clive Cussler's "The Mediterranean Caper" that's a virtual reprise of a scene from "The Secret Ways.")

"The Golden Rendezvous" is a classic ocean hijacking story, where the hero is the ship's First Officer (John Carter). The ship is a converted ocean liner, full of guests, some mysterious, and carrying some secret cargo. During the cruise, the ship gets hijacked by some violent but devious criminals. Some of the ship's officers are killed, and others, including Carter, are wounded. Still, Carter attempts to stop the hijackers. . . .

This is one of the best MacLean novels, written in the 1960s along with a stellar run that includes "The Satan Bug," "Where Eagles Dare," "Puppet on a Chain," and "The Guns of Navarone." Most of those were turned into movies, and in the 1970s, Hollywood adapted "The Golden Rendezvous" into a so-so Richard Harris movie titled "Nuclear Terror."

A lovely presentation
When I first saw this book offered in the Red Wheel/Weiser catalogue, I was so glad to see a book on the Green Man and I requested it for review immediately.  I didn't realize this was a gift set, and it came as a very delightful surprise.
The box contained a small photo book and a Green Man sculptured plaque.  The plaque was on top, a dark rich green, handsome face nestled in the sculpted leaves.  Very nicely produced, he would look great anywhere you happen to want to hang him up.  This is a very nice addition to this presentation.
But the book, which is small in appearance, is packed with Green Man trivia and photos of various depictions of the Green Man.   Mr. Matthews knows his stuff when it comes to the many myths and traditions associated with the Green Man.   I was impressed with the research done by Mr. Matthews in finding the many places where there are some impressive Green Man representations.  Pictures of carvings, building ornaments, paintings, even furniture featuring the image of the Green Man are included here.  There is also a meditation and suggestions for honoring the Green Man in various environments in your life.  The quality printing and gloss paper make this book a small treasure on its own.
For those of you who find the Green Man as special as I do, this book is a wonderful resource on the lore, history and mystery that the Green Man holds.  The plaque will also find a place in your home or garden or office, and will please you as much as the book will.  This would make a great gift for that special person who reveres the Green Man as much as you do.

THE reference on the green man with a precious wall plaque
I own thousands of books and use lots of reference books in my writing, especially horror, folklore, and religion. This one holds a special place in my heart! The book has the most thorough survey of the green man that I have found. It covers the world and all ages. It is absolutely fascinating. The wall plaque is adorable. The book and plaque are boxed for gift giving. I highly recommend this set for any gardener, folklorist, or lover of the outdoors. The plaque has a standard picture frame hanger on the back, which makes it simple to mount on a post or wall. It holds securely in high winds and is ideal for gracing the entrance to a yard or garden.

Holds the history of the Green Man
John Matthews' Green Man: Spirit Of Nature is a difficult set to easily categorize: it's a gift book which blends a 64-page book with a crafted plaque depicting the Green Man figure - also known as Pan and Robin Hood. The book holds the history of the Green Man, myths and legends that surround the figure, and over twenty images of the Green Man taken across cultures over time.

A Good Read!
Kevin C. Klinvex, Matthew S. O'Connell, and Christopher P. Klinvex present a guide to creating a more effective hiring process. They cover each step, from defining the job to hiring the best person. The book provides techniques for attracting the right employees through advertising and promotion. It also covers effective use of applications, interviews, testing, and background checks. This book is clear, well-organized, and easy-to-read. While some of the suggestions may be obvious to those who are experienced at hiring, they are presented in a careful, step-by-step way. We at getAbstract recommend this book to those involved in the hiring process in larger companies, from company owners and top managers to human resource professionals. Small business owners who wish to use more sophisticated hiring techniques may also find it useful.

Outstanding
Hiring Great People provides an excellent, common sense approach to handling some of today's more challenging staffing issues. From recruiting to orientation and everything in between, hiring managers can depend on the sound advice presented by Klinvex, Klinvex and O'Connell.

Professional Must Have
Whether in your briefcase or on the bookshelf, this is a must have for the human resources professional or for any professional involved in selection and hiring. This book is really appropriate for any audience. I have used it as a textbook with my graduate personnel selection classes.

Hiring Great People is a well-written, easy to read book. At the same time, it presents highly technical information in a format which demonstrates how such information can be turned into practice. There are may useful hints, guidelines and forms in the book. As I have indicated above, I have used this book as a text in graduate courses. It is more valuable than books which cost five times as much.

This is not a book about fluff or fads -- it deals with the latest research and technology in the practice of personnel selection in a highly readable fashion. I find myself turning to it repeatedly for advice on topics such as interviewing and competency assessment.

Historical Atlas of East Central Europe (A History of East Central Europe, Vol 1)

Fine work on the region
Almost 5 stars!

This atlas gives exactly what it promises: The history of the lands between the German and Italian-speaking peoples in the West and the boundaries of the former Soviet Union in the East - in short: "East Central Europe". Not to be mistaken with "Eastern Europe", which can exactly be defined by the European area of the former Soviet Union, or Russia, Belorussia and Ukraine of today.
Beside East Central Europe, the atlas also covers the Balkans.

This is the best English-language atlas of it's kind at the moment.
Balanced history telling, which tries to present both sides of disputed topics, illustrated by beautiful - although sometimes rough - maps.
This work presents the finest of Anglo-Saxon mapmaking.
To be used together with the series "A History of East Central Europe", and to be compared with the "The Times Atlas of European History".

Review based on first paperback edition, 1995

The best historical atlas for genealogy in the region
From the Baltic to the Balkans and from 400 A.D. to 1992 A.D., this atlas colorfully covers the territory in the best possible way.

Researchers with Slavic, Germanic, Jewish, Greek or other ancestry from east central Europe will find this historical atlas invaluable.

It contains 89 wonderful maps which show useful details such as the Catholic diocese and archdiocese as they appeared in 1900, the tremendous populations movements from 1944 to 1948, Jewish settlement, and of course the ethnic composition of the region at various periods. Each map comes one or more pages of explanatory text as well.

I find this atlas to be a constant help in my struggle to understand the changing borders of the region throughout history. You can't understand family history if you don't have an understanding of the history of the family's place of origins. This atlas is an ideal way to better understand the history of east central Europe.

Great Genealogy Resource
Excellent reference for genealogical research. A very broad collection of maps makes it useful for a wide rage of topics (religion, ethnic population distribution, politcal boundary shifts in a place where someone's always fighting over boundaries and control). A timeless reference....
