Some Sort of Epic Grandeur: The Life of F. Scott Fitzgerald
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (1981)
Authors: Matthew Joseph Bruccoli and Scottie Fitzgerald Smith
Amazon base price: $25.00
Used price: $9.37
Average review score:

Thorough and honest - excellent!
From the preeminent Fitzgerald scholar Matthew Bruccoli, this book's remarkable thoroghness and honesty is refreshing. Bruccoli gives the oft misunderstood Fitzgerald a human, albeit, reverent study, exploring beyond the overemphasized alcoholism into the realms of insecurity and sensitivity that had an indelible effect on Fitzgerald's work. The book reads well, without the burden of overly scholarly analysis, making it suitable reading either for doctoral study or simply for a summer beach day.

An Adventurous Journey Back in Time
How wonderful an experience to go back to the days of innocence and adventure. Meet a superb story teller and fine writer in Stephen Joseph who takes us through his coming of age story to meet Jim Billy, Dick, and especially those old spirits of the West. All names that shaped a deep part of who he grew to be. This book has it all--romance, adventure, nature, and of course humor--all told with remarkable descriptions. And most of all you will be surprised with the author's revealing himself to us. Don't think this is a guy's book; any woman will enjoy the women characters that play an important part in the stories. Must read for anyone who grew up in those days; and a delightful longing might await those of you who didn't. Must read!

I am a personal friend of the authors, and I want to say he has written great book. Very funny. I am in the book as well, "Joe Becker on Norm". Let me just say all true. I got confused on his "stories" but they were crafted quite well. If you want a laugh and a realistic point of veiw on life, compiled with interesting stories, this is your book. This book also notes breifly to the works of KISS.

Excellent Essays on Everyday Science
I picked up this book on whim, having never heard Dr. Schwarcz's radio program or seen him on television. I spent the
next few days completely engrossed in his lively tales on the chemistry involved in our daily lives.

Discussed here is the science behind ice cream, aspartame, wheat, bagels, paprika, beer and yes, cookies. Schwarcz also chimes in on the controversies over dental fillings, botulin, lead paints, DNA manipulation and genetic engineering. He shares fascinating stories about some of history's greatest scientists (of particular interest is the inventor of Nylon, who ended up committing suicide, and the man behind chemical warfare, who also saved millions of lives with his fertilizer experiments). There is also a section devoted to debunking health scams and diffusing unnecessary paranoia.

While I didn't agree with all of Schwarcz's opinions (I think he may be a little naive in regards to the dangers of genetic modification), the breadth of his scientific knowledge is impressive and his enthusiasm for science infectious. "The Way the Cookie Crumbles" is an entertaining and informative read for both the scientifically minded and those just interested in learning how to get ink stains out of their clothes (try using limonene or amyl acetate).

Great help for planning a Catholic Wedding
I have borrowed this book from friends to look at and now have one from my church as I plan my wedding. The one I have I can't keep so I decided to get my own copy! I love the information and readings in it and the "comments for couples" are great to read with your future spouse to discuss things.

An Excellent Addition to the Field
We have long needed this book. Historically, most texts have either concentrated on describing the natural history of venomous organisms or the medical implactions of envemonations (a noteable exception is the excellent contributions by Halstead). This book provides a great deal of biological informtion about toxic marine organisms and then combines this with the latest information about medical treatments for envenomations. In addition, this book also contains an excellent reveiw and classification for cnidae, which I have personally been looking for for a while. I honestly can't say enough about this text. Although this book is not really for the layman (you won't find much in the way of popularized accounts of injuries), it is an EXCELLENT text for specialists.

The View From Shanty Pond : An Irish Immigrant's Look at Life in a New England Mill Town 1875-1938
Published in Hardcover by Shanty Pond Press (01 November, 1999)
Author: Joseph P. Blanchette
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $24.75
Collectible price: $26.47
Average review score:

An important, unique contribution to Irish American history.
The View From Shanty Pond is a unique blending the historical writings of Joseph Blanchette with those of Peter Cassidy, the author's late great-grandfather to present the reader with a true and compelling account of the Irish immigrant experience in America at the turn of the 20th Century. Blanchette combines his own prose with the period poems and songs of his great-grandfather and in doing so deftly weaves a rich fabric of folk, local and national history that is as entertaining as it is informative. Lively, charming, original, painstakingly researched, incorporating a wealth of information from Peter Cassidy's scrapbooks of poetry, songs, newspaper articles, photos, and memorabilia, The View From Shanty Pond is a compelling window-in-time through which we can come to understand and appreciate the Irish immigrant experience in the burgeoning and industrial America of yesteryear. Highly recommended.
