genetics practice problems and solutions ,chinnici & matthes
I have found this book to be a tremendous help in improving my grade at college level genetics. I needed some help and practice in problems and this book has provided the data base of questions. The questions are well written and the information is laid out in a manner that is not intimidating. I want to sit and read the questions for fun :o) There is a good combination of multiple choice and short answer questions which drew me to buying the book. I need the practice in short answer response questions. Also, the content is not too symplistic and straight-foward.The major topics in genetics are addressed with many questions requiring varying amounts of information for a response. There is a good measure of thinking that is required to foumulate an A+ answer. It is also very convenient to have the solutions at the end of the section of problems so that I do not have to go searching every time I need an answer.

Chemicals do good to!
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in knowing a little more about chemicals and their place in the world. Through his stories, Schwarcz explains how chemicals are used in our everyday lives and how very often they are given a "negative impact" as not being natural. He shows how media and others have made chemicals appear to always be bad yet at the same time these agencies neglect the overwhelming good of chemistry! This book is not about bashing media but rather to inform the reader of the global story and the truth about many of the so-called "toxins" in our world. It is a truly interesting book that is light hearted in its style so that it will please both the scientist as well as the non-scientist!
Finally, if you ever get to see "The Magic of Chemistry" or take "The World of Chemistry" course at McGill ... they are also highly recommended!

George Joseph: The Life and Times of a Kerala Christian Nationalist
Published in Paperback by Orient Longman (01 January, 2003)
Author: George Gheverghese Joseph
Amazon base price: $26.95
Average review score:

An Unusual Book
I was initially attracted to this book because I had read other books by the author and enjoyed them. This seemed a considerable departure from his usual preoccupations. The clarity of style and simplicity of language which were characteristics of his other books remain, but to that is added a familiarity with the history of modern India, a knowledge of the Syrian Christian community of Kerala and the ability to marshall a story from a number of diverse sources - among family letters, personal reminiscences and items in newspapers. Although his grandfather is the subject of his story, the author retains an objectivity and proportion that is commendable. I would agree with following sentiment expressed in the Foreword to the book. "The author has made the story of George Joseph living and lively as though he is the new incarnation of the man. He has brought George Joseph to life. I add the book, exquisitely word-crafted, is a seamless product, the reading of which is like taking a ride in a beautiful vehicle with the subject on board. Further, there is a manifest literary fusion, whichis to say that while the subject is what the book is about he is also in the book, as though the book wrote itself."

Happiness Quest East and West
Published in Paperback by Epic (09 September, 1999)
Author: Joseph Hsu
Amazon base price: $4.95
Used price: $6.00
Average review score:

A Little Book With Big Ideas
Sometimes we need reminders of the truly important things, remembering that our wisdom and advances are the result of standing on the shoulders of giants. Dr. Hsu's book provides quite a few shoulders, with maxims from a variety of writers and philsophers, neatly categorized in alphabetical order by topic. In addition, he provides warm anecdotes and insightful personal observances of his own. Subjects from "fear" and "anger" to "love" and "faith" offer several points for reflection and discussion. In an age of moral confusion and scattered thinking, this book's common-sense messages are most welcome.

Packed with references, scientific studies, and sound logic!
I hate to see "healing" in a book title. I expect to find a new-age, self-help book of the "win friends, influence people" variety. But ignore the title, this is a serious work! It's packed with references, scientific studies, sound logic, economic enlightenment, and quotes. This is the ultimate doom and gloom book (I think I have read them all). I highly recommend it!

Inspirational for those with terminal illness in the family
I first saw this book in our church library done with calligraphy throughout--unfortunately it doesn't appear available in that form anymore. But nonetheless the text is so inspiring and comforting to those facing major surgery such as the author, those with terminal illness or those who have lost loved ones. I have given several copies to people in those situations and they have provided much comfort.

Help Yourself To Positive Mental Health

A REAL GEM! PACKED COVER TO COVER WITH GREAT ADVICE!
This is a terrific book. I would recommend it to anybody who is depressed, stressed out, nervous or alcoholic. The authors provide 50 strategies to make you happier and build your self-esteem. The book is a super easy read. It is humorous, lively and very practical. I must admit that I am kind of a self-help book fanatic (I have literally purchased hundreds of them) and I would rate this one at the top of the list. It gives numerous techniques that none of the other books even mention!!! This book will set you back about one-fifth of what it would cost to see a shrink or a personal coach for one session and will probably do a heck of a lot more. I'd give it six stars but the system only goes up to five!!! FORGET THE BIG NAME SELF-HELP TITLES. BUY THIS ONE AND GET A TON OF INFORMATION YOU HAVEN'T HEARD BEFORE THAT MAKES SENSE.

Awesome read!
Sutton is an exciting writer. His stories are interesting, vivid, unique.
He's written two pieces about William Saroyan, his mentor, in this
collection. He covers a lot of territory in 200 pages (29 stories
altogether), from growing up in Hollywood to relationships to travel to
sports to old age. This book is a must read. I wonder why I haven't heard
of this author before.

A modern-day Bernarnos tells the life of an urban priest.
Paul Wilkes, often seen in the pages of the New Yorker or the New York Times Sunday Magazine writing on issues of faith in the modern age, turns in a compelling biography of a modern-day Catholic cleric. Entering the priesthood in the idyllic 1950s, Joe Greer's expectations were completely upturned by the dramatic changes of Vatican II and the wrenching realities of ministry in inner-city Boston. Rather than enjoying the peace of a well-appointed rectory, Fr. Greer winds up riding the stone-pelted school buses of Boston during the angry days of desegregation. Never claiming sainthood for himself, Greer struggles with very human temptations -- and occasionally falls to them, only to repent and try again. Finally, as the pastor of a suburban Boston church, Joe Greer faces the greatest challenge to faith anyone can confront -- he is diagnosed with a rampant and unyielding form of cancer. How this good man of a faith always open to doubt deals with the most dangerous temptation -- the temptation of despair -- shapes the crux of this well-told spiritual biography
