A gem; a first-of-its-kind
There are so many reasons why you should buy this book. If you liked "Brother to Brother", you'll really enjoy its predecessor. So many of these talented brothers have succumbed to AIDS: Hemphill, Beam, Dixon, etc. This book is a testament to their greatness. The book ends with a list of black gay literary resources. He includes essays about black gay organizing. There's an interview with Richard Bruce Nugent, the Harlem Renaissance writer who was the first African-American to mention homosexuality in fiction. This book is priceless. Do all you can to get a copy.

Investment "Facts of Life"

Excellent primer for anyone interested in the stock market.
After reading "Investment Facts of Life," Idiscovered that "Dow Jones and the Industrials" was not arock band. The book is an excellent primer for students, and for parents who wish to stimulate an early interest in the stock market for their children. "'Facts of Life" thoroughly explains the facets of the stock market and investing in a straightforward manner without irrelevant "fluff." The book is filled with valuable information for readers of all ages and investment experience in a conversational style and tone that is down-to-earth. "Investment Facts of Life" covers a broad view of the investment world. For example, the author emphasizes why reading is a lost art that can be rediscovered, the importance of market psychology, Wall Street's "Doublespeak," and why pessimism is an "unbearable" The second chapter asks the question, "Why should I study the stock market?" I pondered on this question. After reading the book, I came to the simple conclusion; the stock market affects my life, along with the fact that it is important to the economic system. The book offers actual client cases in which the clients think they can invest better or know more about investing than an investment advisor. The author utilizes the use of fictitious characters such as "I.M. Losing Money," "Wild Bill," and "Ray & Hemma Rhoid" to portray his real-life client cases. Included in the book is a Stock Selection Worksheet actually used by the author in his money management firm. This worksheet enables him to focus on the many variables that he considers when choosing suitable stocks to invest in. The worksheet is a useful aid in picking stocks. Also, the amusing illustrations simplify the subject material of each chapter. The most important aspect of the book is the conversational style and the feeling of being in a one-on-one conversation with the author. I learned about the stock market and its facets through a person whose expertise and real-life experiences made it interesting and relevant to my life. NOTE: The author was recognized in 1987 by "Money" magazine as one of the top stockbrokers in the U.S., and he owns his own private money management firm.

A revealing presentation of John Muir's personality
John Muir: My Life With Nature is one of the best introductory biographies into the life of this great and influential American naturalist available to young readers today. Told in his own words, the text was compiled and aptly presented by naturalist Joseph Cornell who does full and complete justice in presenting the reader with an accurate and revealing presentation of John Muir's personality, life, thought, and accomplishment. Although designed specifically for young readers, John Muir: My Life With Nature will also be appreciated by adults with an interest in this unique and impressive man and his contributions to public awareness of the need for conservation and wildlife preservation.

Terrific companion to 'The Gift of Peace'
Whatever your exposure to the late Cardinal, you must admire his example of the Christian life. In the Gift of Peace, he invited us to walk beside him during his final months. In this volume, Spilly & Langford have artfully woven together extended excerpts from his homilies while Archbishop of Chicago. The book is divided into chapters identified by the Stations of the Cross -- a device that both illuminates the Cardinal's own words, as well as the putting the Way of the Cross into a contemporary context, thus reminding us that the Cross itself is as real today as it was two thousand years ago.

If you loved Cardinal Bernadin as we in Chicago did, you will of course love this book. But even if this is your first encounter, you will come to know him like a dear friend -- and learn much from his humility, his prayerfulness, his humiliation and exoneration, and his very public suffering and passing.

Be careful. They have the title wrong!
...It is meant to accompany the book "Keepers of Life: Discovering Plants Through Native American Stories and Earth Activities for Children" The teachers guide is good, but it is not simply a teachers edition of the other book. It doesn't just have a bunch of answers (there are no tests or quizes in the first book anyway). It has suggestions and activities to add to the experience of the the first book, but it isn't necissary for you to have this book to get good use out of the main book, which is written to be used by a teacher anyway, not individual students.

Kentucky Frontiersmen: The Adventures of Henry Ware, Hunter and Border Fighter
Published in Hardcover by Voyageur Pub (1989)
Authors: Joseph A. Altsheler, Nathaniel Kenton, and Todd Doney
Amazon base price: $16.95
Used price: $11.49

Altsheler: Great American Author
Altsheler can paint a picture with words like no other author can. He is so descriptive with his words that you feel that you are right there in the midst of the story with the same feelings and senses as the protagonist, Henry Ware.

The Kentucky Frontiersmen is a newer version of the same book as the "The Young Trailers" that Altsheler wrote in the late 1800"s except a more modern version. The difference being that a lot of the slang is taken out and replaced with more modern words, there are illustrations and I believe that the print is larger.

I first read books from the "Young Trailer Series" back in the 50's when I was in grade school and they had a great influence on my life. I recently ordered some of the books from the Altsheler series from Amazon.com and enjoyed them again immensely. The theme represented throughout the series was the constant struggle to be the best and to be ready and prepared to prove it at anytime or it could cost an early Kentucky settler his life was a lesson that I took with me into competitive situations like sports, academics and the business world.

The "Kentucky Frontiersmen" teaches values that are so important especially to growing children that deal with responsibility, hard work, integrity, intelligence and the special type of people that built this country.

Every resident of Kentucky should read these books because historically they give an accurate view of what Kentucky was like back in the early days of settlement. What a special place Kentucky must have been and I'm sure, still is.

The Landed Estates of the Esterhazy Princes: Hungary During the Reforms of Maria Theresia and Joseph II (The Johns Hopkins University Studies in His)

Superb Study of a Little-Known Subject
This is a superb study of the social and political world of Hungary in the 18th century. By focussing on the Esterhazy's, one of Hungary's most prominent families, the author is able to touch on almost every aspect of social, economic, religious, and political life in middle Europe during the 18th century. From this masterful study, it is easier to understand the social and political unrest that erupted in the major uprisings of 1848 and later resulted in immigration to North America by Austro-Hungarian subjects. I wish that the book had been longer and that the author had been able to expand on each of the chapters.

Lector's Guide to Biblical Pronunciations

Never mispronounce a Biblical word again!
Don't you just hate it when the lector mangles the pronunciation of a city or a person?

Our Sunday Visitor's helpful "Lector's Guide to Biblical Pronunciations, Updated" should be on the bookshelf in every sacristy.

Originally published in 1975, this revised version was necessary in light of the new translation of the Roman Lectionary approved in 1998. It contains more than 100 new words and also allows the lector to look up confusing words in one of two ways. Lectors can either look a word up in the alphabetical listing of words at the end of the book, or they can look up difficult words based upon the readings in a particular year and season. The only drawback to the latter is that a great many lectors may not know what year (A, B, or C) the Church is in.
