The Pursuit of Meaning: Logotherapy Applied to Life

What do you live for?
This book will not give you a simple answer for the question above. It will ask you other more, indeed.

In spite of this, it will also show you how you could find the answers... by yourself.

I read this book the first time in junior high school (I found it accidentally), a period in which, you know, we all are full of questions about life, ourselves and so on. It helped me to make many things and thoughts clearer.

From then, I've read it at least five times more: Life always has questions, and you need to know how to answer them.

A New Angle on an Old Topic
As a professional chemist, I do not look back on the statistics courses I took with particular fondness. While I didn't find them very difficult, neither did I feel that provided me with any deep insights. It was with this, lukewarm attitude that I first picked up Reading Between the Numbers. And then I noticed Chandler's quotation in one of its early chapters. Statistics and Chandler?! This must be interesting. I purchased the book and wasn't disappointed. I found the statistical concepts explained in a way that is both simple and insightful. And the book reminded me that I should have reviewed the topic, which is so important for my work, long ago. But I found the book unique in other ways as well. First, the book is relevant - there is not one concept in it that is not in some way connected to the real world. The author takes special care to show how and why statistics is important in both our professional and everyday lives. The concepts in Reading Between the Numbers are related to applications and vice versa, so that I can now see both sides in a new and more interesting light. Above all, I now feel that the ideas underlying statistics are more accessible to me than before. Second, as in many fields, the more advanced topics are based on earlier ones. And throughout, that author provides reminders of the basics so that I didn't find myself having to return to earlier chapters in order to understand later ones. It seems to me that author was simply sensitive to the needs of nonprofessional readers, which is a rarity in professional books. Finally, Reading Between the Numbers a joy to read. It is written as fiction rather than science and is often very funny. That the author has a rather quirky sense of humor is clear. That he has succeeded in combining it with statistics seems to me no small achievement.

Honest "insider" speaks
This is an excellent book on the very real problems involved in racial reconciliation. I recommend it for both personal reading and for academic study. Garlington is a respected black minister who has a history of working well with a variety of people, crossing racial and denominational boundaries. He gives examples of real-life problems and shares things he has learned in regard to the root problems of relationships between individuals of different ethnic groups; he also gives insight into possible solutions. His unique sense of humor comes across in his writing so that even hard topics are made more enjoyable.

Grand insight on Stories and Story-telling
Written by one of the Masters of Native stories and story-telling, this book offers a tremendous degree of insight into the importance and relevance of traditional stories and story-telling in today's world. Often dismissed as entertainment for children, Bruchac shows in great depth the many layers of importance and wisdom that these stories have. He also provides an expert analysis of the role of story and story-teller -- their functions and realities. If you are interested in traditional Native literature and stories, or just in story-telling in general, this is a must-read book.

Samaki: The Story of an Otter in Africa: A True-to-Life Novel
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (1979)
Author: Joseph A. Davis
Amazon base price: $39.50
Used price: $3.25
Collectible price: $7.41
Average review score:

Excellent fact-based fiction, for adults or children.
Mr. Davis wrote a very touching account of the early life of a wild African Spot-Necked otter, based on the behavior of the species as he studied it in captivity over many years. Although written as fiction, the behaviors presented are very true to the actual animal, and only the specific details of Samaki's life and thoughts are really fictional. The text of some of the mating behavior described in the book may be unsuitable for smaller children, but it is very tasteful and not graphic, just explicit. The level of detail with which Mr. Davis described the behavior of Samaki and the other otters is truly astounding, and aside from being an enjoyable read, the book is about as educational as any non-fiction work written about otters.

The Seasons of a Woman's Life

The Seasons of a Woman's Life
It is hard to believe that Dr. Godat is man because this
book is so insightful into what women think and feel.
I garnered a new understanding of what I am experiencing
today as a woman and a good understanding of what to expect
down the road.

I especially enjoyed the real life stories as they
dispersed a lot of information in a personal, easy to
relate to way.

I highly recommend this book, to both women and men,
as it helps to clarify many questions about why
women feel and act the way we do.

Surprized!
Im Ms. Holden-Bussard's hairstylist. To be very honest, I bought her
book out of loyalty. I knew I would need to read it before her next
appointment, so I set aside a time, on a very, very busy day, with
lots of stops and waiting periods in between, while in town, to read
her book. My first stop was tune-up and oil change, good, at least an
hour or more to start reading this book. My car was finished, I
continued reading the book for more than an hour, at the tune-up
center. I made a crucial decision---cancell all the other business for
the day--go home--READ THIS BOOK!! I did, came home, got comfortable
and did not do a single thing but FINISH reading this book!! I simply
couldn't wait to see what happened next. I came sooooooo close to
calling Ms. Holden-Bussard at 2:30 in the morning when I finished
it--I simply had to share my feelings with her!! I was overwhelmed by
the beauty, the adventure, the mystery, the excitement-the romance,
suspense, intrigue--the easy to read format that Ms. Holden-Bussard
uses. It literally held me in its beauty, its grace and heart-felt
simplicity! I cannot reccommend this book enough. I have since
purchased several copies to give to friends and family--NO, I will not
loan out my autographed copy--it has become an essential part of the
energy of my home! I have only one more comment: Ms. Holden-Bussard,
will there be more?? Please!! I remember you sharing some of the
frustrations and challenges of getting this book published--but the
selfish part of me says--Skinny Scottie was worth it--I WANT MORE!!!!!

Joe Green - the best authority on Jews in London 1914-39
Joe Green is known to most as an outstanding British scientist who played a key role in our understanding of the role of vitamins in human health. His passion for literature is manifold - his encyclopedic book on detective fiction is available in many reference libraries to the connoisseurs of this genre. But we think that Joe will be ultimately remembered as the author of the definitive works on the life of Jews in London between the wars. This minority played an important role in the formation of the modern British culture and society in general. Joe was an integral part of it and his superb command of the history and the English language makes this book not only full of interesting facts but a truly captive reading beyond those of typical history books. His autobiographical approach makes you laugh and cry as you race through the pages. The price of this hardcover book is high but you will be keeping it on your bedside for many years as great fun to read.
