No place in History
The accomplishments of James Iredell Waddell and the C.S.S. Shenandoah read like a movie script. It is amazing that this piece of history has been buried so long. James Horan brings it to life. He reveals that this was not an accidental sortie but a well planned venture breadboarded in the Confederate Naval Headquarters and played out step by step to its conclusion. It is interesting to wonder what would have happened if more ships had been available to the South for this war. Also interesting is the fact that even though the South did not win the war the efforts of the C.S.S. Shenandoah and the C.S.S. Alabama set Yankee dominance of the seas back 70 years.

Outstanding text!
Brooks/Cole should keep this text in their catalog for ages! It is well-written, examples are generally quite clear, vocabulary is introduced well, and the exercises develop real skills, rather than simply be busy-work. One of the best calculus books ever!

The history souldn't be forgotten
The Chinese Nationalist Government led by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek had done a great job during World War 2. The Chinese soldiers and people fought bravely hard against the invaders, but nobody in the United States know too many about the Second Sino-Japanese War!! I really thank the author who wrote this book to bring the history alive!!

The Greatest CW Tour Book on Virginia
This absoloute Civil War site traveler book is fantastic in helping you locate and enjoy virtually every Civil war site in Virginia. Robertson smartly divides VA. into geographic regions
where he maps out the locations of famous CW sites with not only directions but brief description sof the events. With this book I found the famous Drewry's Bluff defense site located above the James river 7 miles below Richmond where the Confederates stopped the monitor and it's fleet and in 1864 played a key role in stoping the Union advance to take Petersburg and Richmond. A remote and beautiful earthwork over the river. Obviously, the great sites of Manasas and Richmond are noted but
off the beaten path locations are best. The site of Turner Ashby's death putside of Harrisonburg off a dirt road into the woods, the site of the Rifle pits and trenches of the North Anna campaign, the star shaped eathern fort in Smithfield, the remote twin on the opposite side of the James in Fort Eustis Army Base, Fort Early an earthwork in Lynchburg, the huge trenches in Newport News City Park, the Jackson valley Campaign and on. A great road trip book and I hope he will have an updated edition with more off road sites.

Daughter! I Forbid Your Recurring Dream!
Published in Paperback by Fugue State Pr (01 June, 2000)
Author: James Chapman
Amazon base price: $8.00

Another masterpiece!
Waiting for each new book by James Chapman is as difficult as it must have been for readers of Virginia Woolf or James Joyce to wait for new books from those greats. And I'm not throwing those names out lightly. Chapman is on par with them, with the works of greats such as Arno Schmidt and Italo Calvino, with the best of Brautigan and Vonnegut, with the finest Nouveau Roman publications. After reading In Candyland It's Cool to Feed on Your Friends, I couldn't have imagined where Chapman could go next or that he could equal that amazing achievement, but here he has. We are seeing a master reaching full stride. This wonderful work (and the sense of Wonder here is the strongest I have seen in any serious work since the novels of Kenneth Patchen) concerns itself with the life and innerworld of a disconnected, beautiful, almost messianic female named Frieda. Chapman traces her from conception to afterlife in a captivating, sometimes dizzying combination of concrete imagist and abstract expressionist prose. Bravo! Bravo! Dare I hope for yet another encore?

fascinating historical novelization
Robert Cecil, Chief Secretary to King James I, sees Papal intrigue under every rock. However, he especially feels the opportunity is perfect to consolidate support for His Highness against the growing espionage presence of the Catholic enemies, Spain and France.

While the foreign spies agitate the oppressed English Catholics, Robert seeks proof of sexual depravity against his most dangerous foe Sir Francis Bacon. He assigns Henry Gresham to obtain the evidence that will fry Bacon. He quickly learns how the agitators inadvertently strengthen the position of their greatest oppressor Robert with their anti-James plots, notably a scheme to blow up Parliament and replace the Scot with a Catholic on the throne. Keeping his own confidence, Henry soon realizes that the diabolical Cecil hired the leaders, Guy Fawkes and Thomas Percy, with an apparent double cross in mind to "earn" the favor of the King. Already in danger due to his secret Catholic beliefs, Henry wonders what to do with what he learned because Cecil will gladly string him up along with the other "traitors".

THE DESPERATE REMEDY: HENRY GRESHAM AND THE GUNPOWDER PLOT is a fascinating novelization of a critical moment in English history that vividly provides the audience with a deep look at surviving the civil religious squabbles that engulfed the English throne in 1605. The story line is cleverly devised so that the history with real people is interwoven into a superbly written espionage plot. Fans of historical tales including romance readers though there is no love story will immensely appreciate Martin Stephen's delightful retelling of the Gunpowder Plot.

Great stuff for kids, good stuff for parents
My 4 year old son insists that I read Detective Dinosaur to him over and over. He picks out new words each time we read the story. We practice using different accents (Bogart, Karloff) to make the characters come alive. Sometimes, we have to read the book a few times (and there are three stories) before he drifts off to sleep, but its worth it to find a book that a boy loves.

Detective Dinosaur Lost and Found
There were 3 short stories about 2 police dinosaurs in this book. It is humorous, with good color illustrations. I would recommend it for the K through 3rd grade level, as well as the teachers.
