The View from a Reformed Christian Perspective
Otto Scott pulls no punches in his evaluation of James I of England (James VI of Scotland). Scott's writing is easy to read and fast paced, yet of a high scholarly quality. His solidly Christian perspective is unusual today. Look for other books by Scott. I recommend his book on Robespierre and _The Great Christian Revolution_. Highly recommended -- you will not be disappointed.

The only music book that gave me what I wanted!
I have learned a few instruments over the years and looked at many books to try to learn piano. This is the only book I saw that gave me what I wnted, the ability to learn piano. It didn't give lots of nice little songs and other frily stuff. It got my chops up... got me running! You can play when you work with this book.

A must read!
I highly recommend this book. It gives an in-depth, historical view of the Scots/English struggle for supremacy in Scotland's politics. I found the portions dealing with appeals to the Pope and the documents used to bolster the arguments particularly fascinating. I hope this text comes out in paperback to make it more affordable.

Excellent for children and grandparents who enjoy language
This runs a close second to KrUss's earlier "My Great-grandfather and I" for catching the ambiance of the pre-W.W.II Helgoland in which he grew up, and the unique relationship between young boy and old man. In addition to empathetic characterizations of his relatives and other residents of that isolated island, the book is filled with word-games played by the two and with clever but touching stories that generally carry a moral, without being preachy. A bit of the word play is doubtless lost in translation, but it is a satisfying book to read aloud to the 4 to 10 set, or simply to enjoy on one's own. (For the intermediate student of German, the originals are a painless way to honest vocabulary building as KrUss panders to no one. That also benefits the translations.)
Nature and Culture in the Iliad: The Tragedy of Hector

he got it right
I found much to disagree about when I read this book, but the conflict it posed was part of what made it such a great read (its often boring to read an author you completely agree with). Of all the commentaries on the Iliad I've seen, this is the one that gets the central point right. Most people focus their critic of the Iliad by assuming it is the story of Achilles. In fact, it isn't, there is another, perhaps more powerful, story lurking; in the finest tradition of Shakespearean drama the Iliad is fundamentally the tragedy of Hector. It is this duality which makes the Iliad one of the great books in human history and nature and culture is one of the few books that, in addition to providing some informative background on homeric culture, stresses this point.

Greatest asset for any G.I. Joe enthusiast
Great book which pictures nearly every G.I.Joe figure released in the U.S., and nearly every gun, backpack, and accessory that came with the figures. Truly indespensable for a G.I. Joe collector. HIGHLY recommended!
