One of the Best
I don't know how some books get to be noticed and others not. . .it certainly does not make sense that this extremely well written book (applies to all ages) has not been better marketed. Please try to find a copy, each school that I teach in I tell the librarian who immediately orders and is thrilled with the text! A Must READ book, excellent for writing seminars if you are discussing point of view, personification, etc.

This is a first-rate children's book!
I am not easily impressed by children's books (I write books for kids myself) but this one gets my A+++ rating. In this book, the ocean speaks in lush, poetic prose. "I am the ocean...once I wet the toes of dinosaurs but that was long ago." The illustrations by James Endicott are equally stunning. This is a must book for teachers who run writer's workshops and want examples of great writing as models for young writers. Ralph Fletcher

I Came Back from Bataan
Published in Paperback by Ambassador-Emerald, Intl. (01 October, 1997)
Authors: James Donovan Gautier, Robert L. Whitmore, and Bob Whitmore
Amazon base price: $9.99
Average review score:

Excellent, moving, interesting, firstperson story
Sgt. Gautier was given some unusual assignments while a prisoner of the Japanese, and he was fortunate to have survived the Death March, prison camp and the voyage to Japan. He gives a gripping account of his experiences, and also provides us insight into the lives of the PoWs after their returned to the States.

This is a good book. Anyone interested in learning what it was like to be a prisoner of war under the Japanese will find it intriguing.

How true that this books is and how real it was.
This book was one that out of all of the books about the Death March of Bataan, was the most vived. This man came to my school and old us how real that this war that most people just talk about, was so real! This man went through so much and survived it and then went through it again, just to tell people about it. I think that it was a very honorable thing to do.

The Real Chicken Soup for Your Soul
This book is by and about ordinary people in extraordinary times, whose prayers were sometimes answered, and sometimes not. It's also about real people at the one time of the year when everyone is vulnerable, people who mostly made it through the war with quiet faith and courage, despite everything. I remember as a young boy during this time seeing gold stars in peoples' windows at Christmas (a sign that they had lost a loved one) and yet right behind it, a Christmas tree.

I bought "I'll Be Home for Christmas" for my daughter and told her that this book is the real "Chicken Soup for the Soul"--written by people who sometimes didn't have enough ration coupons for the chicken-or for a holiday goose-but celebrated anyway.

It's a great history lesson and a good read.

Best Christmas Book Ever
I'll Be Home For Christmas is a must have. This book recreates Christmas time all over the world telling the stories of soldiers at the front, in prison camps (both sides), familys at home, and at internment camps. Filled with great pictures, excerpts from diaries, and newspaper clippings it leaves the reader with a feeling of gratefullness for what they went through. Some is funny, but most is thoughtful or just plain sad. Now I wouldn't put this up with say A Christmas Carol, but it is one that you can choose one story that means something in partucular to you. Each story being uniquely different, and is one that everyone can enjoy.

King James and the History of Homosexuality
Published in Hardcover by New York University Press (1999)
Author: Michael B. Young
Amazon base price: $40.00
Average review score:

King but no Saint
Author M. Young pulls together the evidence concerning James I's alleged sodomy and leaves it to the reader to decide.

one letter, by King James himself to Robert Carr in 1615, complains about a number of issues, including: "I leave out of this reckoning your long creeping back and withdrawing yourself from lying in my chamber, notwithstanding my many hundred times earnestly soliciting you to the contrary." (Young, p. 43)

Villiers, on anticipating his return to England from his Spanish posting, told King James: "I cannot now think of giving thanks for friend, wife, or child; my thoughts are only bent on having my dear Dad and Master's legs soon in my arms." (Young, p. 47)

while King James did write about sodomy as a "horrible" crime in his Basilikon Doron, "Sex with subordinates was a prereogative of patriarchy, and James was the chief patriach of the whole realm." (Young, p. 48) "James could have been perfectly earnest in condemning sodomy while simultaneously engaging in what we today would call homosexual behaviour" (Young, p. 49)--because the "legal definition [of sodomy] was extremely narrow. It specified only one sex act between men, anal intercourse, and excluded all other genital sex acts." Furthermore, as James is said to be "a notorious hypocrite where swearing and drinking were concerned; he could simply have been the same where sodomy was concerned." (Young, p. 50)

Did James play the hypocrite, preaching one thing fr one side of his face while whispering something else to his favourites? Perhaps no one will ever know on this side of heaven. It won't hurt to read Young's arguments and decide for yourself.

Fascinating book - entertaining AND educational
This is a really great book, entertaining and readable, yet also informative and educational.
It discusses both the personal history of King James (of the King James Bible fame) and public perception of homosexuality during 16th and 17th Century England.

For readers not already well acquainted with King James, such as myself, the opening chapter establishes his history. And it does a good job -- not only did it enable me to follow the rest of the book, but subsequent histories I've read of King James didn't add anything surprising, meaning it was sufficiently thorough.

The next chapters examine the evidence that James had sex with his male favorites, what the court and subjects thought about it, along with the various terms, codes and historical analogies that James' contemporaries could discourse about sex between males.
Subsequent chapters discuss the relationship between homosexuality, effeminacy and pacifism vs. heterosexuality, masculinity and war, how James's homosexuality affected the reign of his son, Charles, and what contemporary and later writers said about James's sexuality, concluding with comments on the general history of homosexuality.

Fascinating book. It has an element of the tabloid (with juicy excerpts from James' love letters) while also very thought-provoking. I have purely a layman's interest in the subject, and I had no trouble following the author's language or arguments. For more serious historians and researchers, everything is very thoroughly footnoted and annotated.

I *HIGHLY* recommend it.

A Comprehensive Look at Jacobean England
A very thorough and perceptive analysis of the Reign of James VI of Scotland, later to be James I of England. Patterson's depiction of James as a conciliatory force within British Christendom is well supported in this excellent period history. Articulate and intellectually stimulating.

A Significant Historic Contribution
Dr. Patterson's King James VI and I and the Reunion of Christendom is a significant contribution to the volume of works written about early 17th Century . The work shows that James tried to acheive an ecumenical union among the fractured states of Europe in a century that saw one crisis after another. The incredible amount of research that went into this book is clearly evident. This would make an excellent addition to anyone's library.

Lung cancer- a review
Pass' book is excellent, well-written, and comprehensive. It is one of the first books patients and family members should go to, though they should be cautioned that the book is written for a medical audience. Skip the first two chapters on mollecular biology which are far too technical, and go to some of the other chapters written in a detailed but comprehensive fashion. This book will prove exceptionally useful, but tough reading for many, so keep a medical dictionary and encylopedia nearby.

An excellent resource for lung cancer clinicians and patient
This second edition is an excellent, readable resource that makes few assumptions about the reader's familiarity with lung cancer, molecular biology, or cancer genetics. Contains many entirely new chapters as well as carefully updated material from the first edition. Geared to oncologists and researchers, but nonetheless a good foundation resource for patients and families who wish to learn a great deal about lung cancer and its management.

Vital reference, fundamental history of christian thought
This text describes the history and progression of modern christian thought since the eighteenth-century Enlightenment. Highly readable without sacrificing an intelligent coverage of how christianity has evolved with other major historical movements. Highly recommended for those with particular interests in the history of christianity or historical interests in general.

A must have for theology students
If you are a student of theology, or just happen to be interested in theology, YOU MUST HAVE THIS BOOK! I own a number of books that offer introductions to modern theologians, but none of them are as good as this one.

First of all, it's readable. The articles, while thorough, help put very difficult and complex ideas in very simple forms.

Second, it's complete. The book covers every important modern theologian. It gives a brief biographical sketch, places the theologian in the context of particular movement/periods, lists their key works, summarizes their most important contributions to theology, and covers important critiques.

I consult this book constantly for a quick intro to a thinker I am not familiar with. For theology students, the book is a must have.

Nation of Nations is a history book that reads like a novel.
Nations of Nations tells the history of our country in a very tangible way that is accessable and interesting. It is a rare history book that focusues as much on the culture and the people from different time periods as the country's leaders and law makers. Which, when studying American History, is of the utmost importance.

AN EASY TO UNDERSTAND BOOK THAT HELPS OUT THE READER!
NATION OF NATIONS VOLUME TWO: SINCE 1865 WAS A FABULOUS TEXT BOOK. THIS BOOK HELPED ME TO BETTER UNDERSTAND ALL ASPECTS OF THE INFORMATION WITHIN. AS A FRESHMAN THIS YEAR I HAD A HARD TIME ADJUSTING TO MY CLASSES BUT WITH THIS TEXT I HAD NO PROBLEMS UNDERSTANDING MY READING ASSIGNMENTS AND ENDED UP DOING VERY WELL IN THE CLASS. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK IF YOU HAVE A HARD TIME PICKING OUT THE IMPORTANT PARTS OF A PARAGRAPH BECAUSE IT HAS GOOD OUTLINES. IT WAS A FANTASTIC TEXT BOOK!

The Rainbow Division in the Great War: 1917-1919
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (1994)
Author: James J. Cooke
Amazon base price: $74.95
Average review score:

Personal stories bring the Rainbow Division to life
An outstanding book that brought the Rainbow Division to life through the use of personal stories and well documented research of each battle. The book has numerous footnotes allowing the reader to continue his/her personal search for what life was really like for soldiers in World War I. A very good read. I could hardly put the book down - not something you can usually say about history books.

Excellent unit history.
The American 42nd Division was unique in World War One. Composed of National Guard units from twenty-six states, from its start it demonstrated the strengths and weaknesses of the American soldier: brave, naive, eager to fight, always an amateur at heart, slow to accept the military conventions of the professional soldier but quick at the craft of war. The Alabamans, Irish New Yorkers, and Midwesterners who comprised its main units began with the regionalist preoccupations so prevalent in those days, but ended as Americans, proud to have served in one of the top divisions of the AEF. Colonel Cooke's fine history takes us from conception to demobilization, with clear and complete combat narrative and sketches of some famous Rainbow Men: Douglas MacArthur, Wild Bill Donovan, the playwright Charles MacArthur, Joyce Kilmer, Father Francis Duffy, George Patton (attached for St. Mihiel), and others. Every division should have a history of this quality.

A Personal Glimpse at a Favorite Author
This is a most enjoyable book allowing a glimpse into the life of one of my favorite authors. It was interesting to learn about the situations that molded the life of James Herriot (Alf Wight).

The Real James Herriot
-James Herriot was a country animal doctor who recanted his life into stories, which became All Creatures Great and Small and other books and audios. His son, Jim Wight, upon his father's death, composed a tribute to a man we all thought we knew in The Real James Herriot. The abridged audio version is narrated by TV's James Herriot, actor Christopher Timothy. His familiar tramping of the characters and Herriot's words makes him the perfect choice to read this veneration.
