What loving your neigbor is all about
The author was a college professor of mine too many years ago and reading this book about his relationship with the "socially disadvantaged" brought back memories of Fr. Pete and how he gave so much of himself to those who needed help desperately. He's still giving. I consider it a profound look at Christian Charity from a first person perspective. I was deeply moved.

An informative book that gives basic knowledge on Napoleon
A very informative book, Napoleon: The Final Verdict, describes all aspects of Napoleon's military career. Although it lacked extensive details on individual battles, it gave basic knowledge necesary to understand the Napoleonic Wars. The book is divided into two sections. The First section gives the knowledge obtained on his life. The second section analyzes the information given in the first to help you determine Napoleon's true quality. I especially like the pages of quotes which the author has included in the back of the book.

"Divine"
The Italian philosopher Marsilio Ficino, who was renowned for his Latin translations of all Plato's dialogues, set out to prove that the tenets of Platonism, instead of Aristotelianism, were fundamentally compatible with Christianity. He attempted this not only by acting as the primary mover of the Florentine academy, but also through his magnanimous patron Cosimo de' Medici who apportioned Ficino the leisure to commence his monumental work, "The Platonic Theology," which is offered here for the first time in a long-awaited English translation. Marsilio Ficino's work--from what may be seen from the first of five anticipated volumes--is an artful, straightforward representation of the divine philosophy of Plato, magnificently garbed under a brilliant and definitive medieval synthesis. Of the work itself Ficino says, "the Platonic mysteries are set forth as clearly as possible...so that...we may reveal the Platonic teaching, which is in complete accord with the divine law." Like all Christian-Platonists, Ficino used Augustine as a model for his orthodox amalgamation of the teachings of Plato and Christ, and believed so strongly in it that he said, "the Platonic teaching...is related to the divine law of both Moses and Christ as the moon is to the sun." With this in mind, it may be said that the vision of Marsilio Ficino, so clearly manifested in this work, will come as a relief to anyone ardently devoted to the school of Plato and the religion of Christ. The translated works of Ficino are certainly a great benefit to those confined to the English speaking world, and the other up-and-coming volumes in new I Tatti Renaissance Library (Harvard) are likely to produce the same effects. The value of these newly translated masterpieces of western culture cannot be described.

Good Study Guides
These series of books are good study guides. I use this in addition to my text book. The text book gives you so much unnecessary stuff, it makes it hard to read and understand. The Schaum's Outline books give you enough information without being overwhelming to completely understand the subject.

these are realistic, practical change agents!
What a great story. No super heroes or improbable scenarios. Three guys from our generation (37 yrs. old, like many of us, except that they dared to break out of the box and find a better way to communicate. The story is beyond more effective policing techniques but revisits the core values that have made America the place it is. kudo's and continued success to the Slick boys and the communities they serve. they also did a "killer" interview on the Joan Rivers radio program in NYC, that is why I bought the book.

My only complaint with this book is the title.
I love the way Garrett writes, and have enjoyed all of his books that I have read, but this book doesn't seem to have much to do with the title. If you are looking for a clever insight into the minds of commoners, messengers, and Catholic Priests (among others) during Elizabeth's reign, then this is the book for you. There is one very interesting chapter on the letters between Elizabeth and James, but most of the rest of the book seems to stray from the subject of the succession.

Looking at the Soldier's life before and after the battles
"Tenting Tonight: The Soldier's Life," by James I. Robertson, Jr. and the Editors of Time-Life Books, is one of the above average volumes in The Civil War series because it deals with the soldiers who had to fight the great battles that so often are the focus point of these books. Chapter 1, "Answering the Call," deals with the rush to join the army when men on both sides feared that the conflict would end before they got a chance to fight. Chapter 2, "Camp Days," covers both the daily routine of the camps (including sutlers, playing cards and risqué pictures) and the training the new recruits received. Chapter 3, "The Wasted Legions," provides a rather brief examination of how the wounded were treated. Chapter 4, "The Prisoners' Plight," does a similar job for those who were captured during the war, and ends with a series of sketches done by Confederate Private John T. Omenhausser who spent a year at the Federal prisoner-of-war camp at Point Lookout Maryland before dying. Chapter 5, "Tests of Honor," covers a whole series of things soldiers did to prepare for battle, from sentimental songs to regimental mascots as well as shooting deserters and trading with the enemy. Actually, Time-Life could have done better taking two volumes to deal with all of these topics, looking at the life of the soldiers before the battle in camp and afterwards for those who are wounded or captured.

The Topology of Stiefel Manifolds

Good review to the field
Professor Ioan James gives a very good review of developments in the area, a lot of which he personally helped to invent or developed. He continues with his tradition in writing clear and concise books (like Topological and Uniform Spaces, by Springer-Verlag) and gives the readers a clear look into various aspects of Stiefel manifolds. It is a good chance to hear from one of the few leading experts in this specialist field of mathematics.

A youth worker's must read!
Mike Nappa's book is insightful, comprehensive, and challenging to traditional models of youth ministry. It's a must read for youth leaders and pastors who want to increase the effectiveness of their ministries! This book deals with everything from games to worship to small groups to volunteers and more. Mike lets us know how teens feel about all of these areas of our ministries, what they really don't like, and what they wouldn't want us to change in a million years. How did he find out? He asked them. This book doesn't try to change the message we present, instead it challenges the methods we use to present the message.

Great intro to Southwest Indian Culture
I read this book when I was in the eigth grade, that was 1969. It was spellbinding.....an account of cative torture was probably too unsettling for a thirteen year old, but otherwise, awesome. It introduced me to Comanche culture and started an interest in American Indian history that has continued to this day. Fabulous read!
