Our Collective Eco-Wake
Let me start by going backwards. In the appendix, the authors testify that this book is about the "greenest" on the market. With soy-based inks and nearly 100 percent of the paper content comprised of post- and pre-consumer waste, the book is a monument to sustainable production. Although they bemoan the "well traveled pulp" cover, no dioxins were co-produced alongside the book. To prove the book really is this cool, they painstaking tracked the web of connections involved in its production as far back as possible.

After discussing every facet of the book, from guts and cover to printing, the only thing they were unable to determine was where half the cover's paper was produced. In all, this post-production analysis was stunning. The delicate web of causes and effects that entered into the books production should serve as a model to all those who would conceive the production of any product. Ideally, we should strive for this kind holistic understanding of production, consumption, and disposal before products every leave the design table.

The actual content of the book is just as salient. What happens when millions of ordinary people like you and me go about our ordinary business, using lots of stuff? What ecological "wakes" do they leave behind, rippling outward across the world? This is the premise of the book, which is rather unassuming and commonsensical. The answers, however, are anything but mundane and commonsensical. The true stories of how things are made might leave you feeling overwhelmed or depressed. You might think twice about throwing that lump of sugar into your coffee -- and not only because it could add a few extra pounds and put you at greater risk of heart disease. You do so also in efforts to help restore the habitat of the Florida Everglades.

Did the profound disconnect sink in yet? Not to worry, another 9 generic commodities with their own unique global "ripples" await you after picking up this book. They include you morning coffee, the newspaper, your T-shirts, shoes, that computer, the bike (and the car), those French fries, the hamburger that preceded them, and also the cola which will wash it all down. Although the imaginary North American whose daily consumptive routine this book tracks might not be you, do not then assume that these issues do not therefore concern you. The fact is, the consolidated effects of this consumption are harming much more than the Florida Everglades. They could potentially end all human reproduction. Perhaps you should read that last sentence again.

We need to educate ourselves about this net ecological "wake" before the rooster tail of acid rain, rainforest destruction, ozone depletion, water depletion, air pollution, forest annihilation, energy exhaustion, pesticide inundation, sweatshop labor promotion, species extinction, waste production, monoculturalization, spiritual declination, heavy metal pollution creation, VOC smog accretion, and desertification leave us all wet and shivering in the cold.

"Well, what am I supposed to do bury my car?" you wonder. The book also offers hope. Consumption, whether we like it or not, is in end inescapable. Thus by understanding our impacts, seeking alternative solutions, educating the friends and the general public, and at the same time altering some our most unhealthy consumer habits, we can help move things in the right direction. If you are looking for more in-depth suggestions along these lines, check out "The Better World Handbook" (2001). It is my personal eco-bible. You can also get further eco-tips from the Northwest Environmental Watch website.

Easy read, deep impressions
I didn't know this book would be such a nice read...
After receiving it, I read it all in one sitting. The book chronicles a day in the life of a typical person (an American). Although it is about an American, I believe there is not much difference between any ordinary person in any developed country on earth. The impacts of this person's consumption of products, her actions are all examined from an environment viewpoint. Some people may think that the book is too amateur but that's precisely why it's such a good read. It's easy to understand but leaves a lasting impression on you. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in knowing more about how our everyday actions affect the world we live in.

Outstanding illustration of how consumerism harms the earth
I've never found another book like this one. It makes it extremely easy to understand, breathtakingly clear, how our choices to consume various products cause a chain of events which harm the environment. Do you know what was done to a river in Canada to produce the six-pack of aluminum cans you just bought? What part of the earth did your coffee come from, and what scary things were done to produce it? The authors never hector or nag, they just describe the origin of things you probably use every day, and let you contemplate them for yourself. The book is a quick and easy read, suitable for adults and teens alike. If I were a high school teacher or college instructor, this book would be mandatory reading for my classes.

Remember the Spanish Armada
Don Taylor and Jeanne Smalling Archer explain how to prosper "in the shadow of the retail giants." This is quite literally a "how to" manual, filled with hundreds of specific examples, suggestions, strategies, and cautions which can be of substantial benefit to literally any small-to-midsize retail operation which is currently struggling to survive and then succeed. Of course, the David and Goliath metaphor is invoked. The co-authors stress the importance of courage, ten survival strategies, and "about 500 stones." (David needed only one well-placed stone. Today, he would need more "ammunition" because there are so many different "giants" to conquer. It is worth noting that David did not wrestle Goliath.) Interestingly, the "Big Three" (Wal-Mart, Kmart, and Target) all opened their first stores in 1962. They were not the first discounters but they had learned a great deal from pioneers such as Ann and Hope, Korvettes, Zayres, Arlands, and Gibson's. Once "Davids" themselves, they eventually became "Goliaths", demonstrating (in process) the importance of the ten strategies which are examined in Up Against the Wal-Marts.

The authors organize the material according to three overriding themes: change, improve, and succeed. In the 1990s, change has been the only constant. Improvement is not an option; it is an imperative. With regard to success, the co-authors leave their reader with this final statement: "Many small businesses are going to be successful competing with the giants, and we can't think of any reason why yours shouldn't be one of them."

One of the best books to own if you own a store.
This book covers everything you need to know about marketing and customer service for the large or small retail store. It's written in a easy to read style and gives ideas that can be used immediatly. Its help in developing our employee manual. I strongly recomend it!

You can survive when Wal-Mart arrives!
This book is recommended extra credit reading for students in my college course titled Retailing. I began using it in the classroom after reading countless articles about how Wal-Mart's arrival meant the death of the small retailer. Many years ago we preached that IBM was the evil empire that no one dared attack. But eventually companies found ways to strategically do battle with the giant. Now it's Wal-Mart, and there are ways to survive in this giant's shadow too. Personally I'm glad Wal-Mart is available in my neighborhood, yet I still support the smaller retailer when given a good reason. If you are a small retailer, you must read this book!

Photography At It's Best!
The photography in this collection is some of the best, most colorful that I've seen. The interviews with the people in the book are very well done.
This is a must for anyone that has an interest in the native American culture.

A Book To Pass To Your Children
Never have I found a more informative book on "the People" as this one. Being Native American myself, and wanting to learn more about my heritage, this book answered questions I've had for years. The pictures are amazingly vibrant. This book makes me proud to be a part of the Native American family.

Excellent Photography and Informative Text
I have had the pleasure of meeting over half of the people featured in this book. For those wishing to know more about Native American culture and pow wows, one would be hard pressed to find a better book. A beautiful illustration of a magnificent culture.

Author knows how to put thoughts in words
This is a well-written and certainly useful book. I just want add one note. The writing is very feminine. Male readers should use caution when working with this book!

Indispensable!
It's on my short list of books that everyone should have on their bookshelf.

For when you REALLY don't know what to say
This book is not full of the usual hard to write letters, these are the REALLY hard to write letters. How to tell your relatives you don't want to spend the holidays with them again. Write a teacher to tell them what a poor (or good) job she did with your child. Tell your Pastor he's not being very supportive of his congregation. These may sound a little harsh but they are written in just right way, with forgiveness and hope for a change. There are also condolence letters, dealing with cancer letters, and all those touchy situations when you don't know what to say. Keep it right next to your stationery.

Insightful!
Val and Jeff Gee bring their extensive experience in employee training to a simple, yet effective book version of the training sessions they designed for top corporations. They offer seven critical ideas - keys - to providing outstanding customer service. Each one builds upon the premise and actions of the previous one, making these lessons sensible, precise, and natural to put into practice. The book illustrates each key with anecdotes, case histories, boxed lists, cartoons, and exercises. This creates an interactive learning experience. Nicely written in an upbeat, conversational style, it does not talk down to the reader or take the tone of a cold, authoritarian "employee manual." Neither is it condescending by being overly simplified in thought or tone. We [...] recommend this book to anyone whose position involves serving customers, or supervising those who do.

Excellent training resource
I do a lot of human resources training in my work, and have recommended this book to numerous organizations. It is well written, and makes its points clearly and without unnecessary theorizing. I also have never before seen customer service presented from the perspective that the server isn't doing it for the customer or the company, but for their own sense of excellence and satisfaction.

Gem of a book
Super Service is one of the rare books on this subject that delivers what it promises. Val Gee and Jeff Gee know their stuff and communicate it with real style and enthusiasm. Moreover the tips are practical easy to implement and inspirational.

THIS STOCK MARKET BUBBLE WILL SOON BURST!
This is a book that should be read by anyone that considers themselves to be PRUDENT investors. When people say they are LONG-TERM investors, do they really know what they are saying? What do they mean? Do they realize that a dollar invested today may be worth 1.25 in 6 months -(due to the mania of this market) - but only worth 50 cents in 5 or 10 years? It could likely be worse than that. These mutual funds are being run by young hot shots that have no concept of doing anything but putting "money to work" (buying) due to the massive influx of money pouring in over the years. All reasonable valuation models have been trashed and "investors" have become extremely complacent because it's been so easy to "make" money. Sorry, it's not that easy or realistic! The selling will soon come in waves. Be wise and prepare youself for what will go down in history as the worst bear market ever, followed by a worldwide depression. Best of luck to all! P.S. I also recommend a book called "THE WARNING" by Joseph Granville and "THE GREAT CRASH of 1929" by John Galbraith. The parallels between then and now are too striking to ignore. So don't be one of the mindless herd.................

This book offers perspective
This book shows a breadth of knowledge and depth of investigation that is rarely offered to the investing public. The fact that the book ends with a chapter on Further Reading indicates that the author respects the intelligence of his readers and is interested in what he is writing. A book of this quality shows by example how much junk is out there, yet the author is modest and always seeks to help the reader, not exhort. I read it after the onset of the two year bear market and in some ways, not all of the predictions have been met yet, making this book still worth your reading. The persistent heavy volume of trading in the QQQs and the recent snap back rally (5/2002)suggest that the public is seeking further punishment and the crisis is not yet matured. I hope the author rewrites it with the current changes in the market in mind: iShares, ETFs, gold and the rediscovery of the emerging market (only a rediscovery to the amnesiac). His style is intelligent and refreshing. You'll need to read it carefully, since some ideas only appear fully developed in a single passage. I couldn't put it down.

Excellent, hard-hitting, thought-provoking, wake-up call
I can't understand why this book is listed out of print. Why aren't more people demanding this book? Maybe there aren't enough investors yet who are worried about the safety of their money.

Just recently (Sept 99) a few money market funds ran into a bit of trouble - exactly the kind of trouble described in this book. Are you still assuming that your money market fund is safe and that a fixed NAV of $1 will be maintained?

The book definitely opened up my eyes to other alternatives for places to put money. Because of this book I've rediscovered alternatives like Treasury Bills and savings bonds.

However I did question the author's suggestions for a self-directed portfolio containing municipal bonds and widely held stocks. After the Orange County, California fiasco I would not consider municipal bonds. And I would question the idea of holding the same widely-held stocks that the institutional investors hold.

The Teachings of Don B.: Satires, Pardies, Fables, Illustrated Stories, and Plays of Donald Barthelme
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (1998)
Authors: Donald Barthelme, Kim Herzinger, and Thomas Pynchon

Playing the B-sides
The critical consensus on Donald Barthelme is that he basically reinvented the short story during his lifetime (he died in 1989). While there is some exaggeration involved in this assessment -- at times, Barthelme seems to be doing nothing much more than channeling Kafka -- his work is unique, inventive, and experimental in the best sense of the word. The present collection contains many of his occasional and "lighter" works. A number of them, for example, originally appeared as unsigned pieces in "The New Yorker". If the collections "Sixty Stories" and "Forty Stories" can be seen as Barthelme's greatest hits, then "The Teachings of Don B." can be seen as the B-sides. The subtitle of the book calls this a collection of "satires, parodies, fables, illustrated stories, and plays," and the description fits. The title story is a send-up of Carlos Castenada's "Don Juan" books, and on the whole the volume is marked by a certain air of lightness and good humor. There is a stretch in the middle, consisting mainly of works that originally appeared between chapters in the book "Overnight to Many Distant Cities", that is somewhat slower and more ponderous than the surrounding text, but it doesn't last for long. Of particular interest are the illustrated stories, where the text is complimented by collages made from old photographs and illustrations, somewhat in the manner of the Surrealists. My only complaint about this book is the inclusion of three short plays at the end. While interesting, they don't quite mesh with the rest of the volume, and could easily have been published on their own. The collection also features an introduction by Thomas Pynchon, which in itself it worth the price of admission.

Funny, sad, inoculating, irritating
With the possible exception of Thomas Pynchon, there isn't a writer around, living or dead (that I know of--I haven't read them all), who gives us a funnier, more accurate understanding of the absurdity of late twentieth-century existence than Barthelme, and it's good to have these previously uncollected pieces in one volume. The quality of this book is, I believe, remarkably even, but some pieces hit me harder than others. No one could have written "Here's the Ed Sullivan Show" but DB; what an eye the guy had!

Read this book (or SIXTY STORIES or SNOW WHITE) and you will not be able to look at the world in the same way again. DB knew better than most what petty, unexamined, selfish lives we live (but this is not to say that DB was mean spirited). Does he give solutions? Sort of, but not solutions that I am capable of paraphrasing. There may be readers for whom DB's teachings will seem pointless and not worth the trouble. (To them I say, "Back to your Grisham and Steele!") But for most of the rest of us--as bombarded as we are with insulting campaign pitches, thisandthat.com (!) ads, news of how the market is making us all wealthy, endless blockbuster film versions of mediocre TV shows, more tripe about what a great president Reagan was and on and on--DB can function as a sort of philosophical ophtalmologist with a rare antidote that will both make us laugh at and feel a bit grim about our consumer society.

Incredibly funny
I have never read anything this hilarious. It's perfectly balanced, too: Barthelme never goes too far or too short. Also get the "40 Stories" which in my opinion are much better than the 60.

Ultimate Healing System

Average review score:

Is the testing system credible?
There is a wealth of information here about herbs, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and many other topics of interest to alternative health readers. The point we keep returning to is that our medical problems are caused by allergies, and that allergies can be cured by taking antidotes.

Muscle Response Testing (MRT) is used to determine what we are allergic to and exactly how to cure the allergy. But the MRT system is so hard to believe. It is like tapping into a realm of magic. And yet everything in this book takes you back to this unusual method of testing.

Do you need Vitamin C? Place a Vitamin C pill in your right hand, press it to your solar plexus. Extend your left arm. Your doctor then presses down on your extended left arm. Is your resistance strong? Is your arm rigid? Try it again, holding two vitamin pills this time. Is your extended arm stronger this way?

Being open minded, I gave it a try even though it seems unscientific. Holding different amounts of pills did have varying effects on my thoughts. Does this test rely on the fact that the person being tested knows what he is holding and this affects how strong his resistance will be? Will he then subconsciously try to satisfy the tester by giving an appropriate amount of resistance? Do the results really tell what your body needs, or do they tell what you think you need?

One of the most valuable bits of advice in this book is that your state of mind deeply affects your health, and that worrying and being afraid will not do you any good. When you feel this way you are advised to say a prayer. This will re-focus you and turn your negativity around.

The author is obviously very knowledgeable, and I believe him when he says he has helped many patients.

Inflamed ear, or ear infection?
As a holistic practitioner, The Ultimate Healing System is on my "suggested reading" list. I am all for having an informed client, and after they have read this book, THEY ARE INFORMED! The rice/wheat allergies regarding ear inflamations is notable. The author, in one instance suggests that allergies (the kind that do not show up on a prick test)are responsible for such things as ear inflamations. There are easy to follow muscle testing exercises that individuals can do to see if they have adverse reactions to such things as even the suppliments and vitamins they take.
As a colon therapist, and advocate of good water, the chapter on Drinking Water, which was brief and to the point, could have contained more information.
This is a great reference book to keep on hand at all times. But read it through FIRST!

If Only I Had Known
After years of suffering with what I believed (and mistreated) as some mystery nasal allergy, I received relief in whatever time it took to disgest a couple of potassium pills. My daughter came home from work with a severely painful throat. When she mentioned it was only on the left side, I thought, ah, hah, whipped out my book handed her a handful of royal jelly capsules and within hours, her throat was completely "well". If only I had read this book years ago, I could have saved hundreds of dollars on over-the-counter and prescription drugs.

A must read-- take it with you anywhere!!! Share for laughs!
This book was given to us as a gift, and has accompanied us on many hunting, fishing, and camping ventures. During times of sharing the great outdoors with our friends and families, we have had many chuckles along with Uncle Handsome and his Redneck Gang. A must buy-- even as far as the Great White North!!!

Great Humor, Funny, Good for the Outhouse!!!
This book is truly a concise repesentation of the life of a Redneck. Grate poetry. And usefull pages at the end of the book. If you ever wondered about the Redneck life, buy this book. Brent is a great storyteller. Also, get his tape called Cow Tunes For Kids.

It goes down good, like a southern-fried Sunday dinner!
I work for the Hazard Mitigation Division for the State of Kentucky and personally traveled with the author, Brent, throughout the state. Our job was to help flood disaster victims relocate to safe locations following the 1997 March flood in Kentucky. In those countless hours we spent traveling the highways and by-ways of my home state, Brent's kind and compassionate nature uplifted many flooded victims. I think Brent does not poke fun at anyone but sees the humor in every day life. He also has written and recorded songs for kids, mostly about cows. Well, I guess that's all I have to say for now because I feel a slight warmth on the posterior of my neck.
