Must read for SNA managers
"Integrating TCP/IP i-nets with IBM Data Centers" is an absolute must-read for network administrators, data communications managers, and chief information officers in organizations with IBM mainframe or midrange SNA hosts. Guruge is an expert on IBM's System Network Architecture, which, although a quarter century old, holds most of the data of the world's largest organizations. Guruge explains both in technical detail and with real-life case studies how organizations can take advantage of TCP/IP, the lingua franca of the Internet, to facilitate communications with and among SNA devices. If you speak the language of SNA networking, like 3270/5250,DLSw, APPN/HPR and are trying to do so in the same sentence with terms like HTML, Telnet, and screen rejuvenation, this is the book you must read. Mr. Guruge will not only explain how these technologies relate to one another, but he will provide examples of how organizations have married these technologies to meet specific organizational and business requirements. And by the time you finish the book you'll have a firm understanding of how your own organization can integrate its IBM data center with TCP/IP i-nets.

A Must Read for Any Organization With IBM Host Systems
The book is very comprehensive, giving full coverage of all the information necessary to understand the implications and considerations that must followed in order to integrate IBM data centers with Internet technology. It provides an excellent explanation of the various Network, Gateway and management options that are available and their pros and cons. It is also very informative and thorough analysis of old vs. the latest groundbreaking technology available as well as a prognosis for future market winners and losers based upon valid market analysis.

It deals in depth with many concerns IS mangers typically have, including bandwidth and other performance issues related to various network types/configurations when it comes to "integrating the data center with i*nets".

I was especially glad to see his view on various vendors' e-business products or tie-ins and how these apply to applet, SNA-to-HTML conversion and programmatic access. Of course, in mentioning e-business, security is the number one concern that is raised by any reader, and was addressed in full with logical commentary/opinion as to what security methods are available and when/where to use them.

Extensive use of case studies to offer real-life examples of the technologies and how and why they were implemented for a given company's needs, adds further value by underlining the fact that the product/technology chosen is dependant upon each company's specific network and user requirements.

This book is a "must read" for any company IS manager considering a move to Web-to-Host technologies. The book focuses on the emerging Web-based host access trend and choosing the right solution for a given project.

Irrationality: Why We Don't Think Straight!
Published in Hardcover by Rutgers University Press (1994)
Authors: Stuart Sutherland and N. S. Sutherland
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Irrationality is - not reprinting this book!
Stuart Sutherland neatly skewers all those pieces of human behaviour that have driven you mad because you couldn't understand how humans could ever act like that, with a simple understandable explanation; They aren't rational.

This sounds like a truisim, and it is. But critically, it's the insight that irrationality is itself a specific form of human behaviour, that is entertaining, revealing and I would even say liberating in its effect.

For example; YOU think that by reading this review you are going through a rational process at the end of which you will make a considered decision on buying the book. In fact, you've decided already. What you're really doing here is justifying that decision.

I bought 30 copies of this book in 1994 and gave a copy to every member of the marketing department. Now I want to buy more, but my advocacy can't stretch to US$40 a copy for hardback. Please mr publisher, do another run of paperback!

I am surprised this book it out of print...bring it back.
Sutherland's book became a constant companion for me the week it arrived. I began reading it at work during lunch, and found myself quickly drawn into...better said, hopelessly slipping into a vigorous head nod and agreeing with this author's purpose and insights. He clearly says his purpose is to demonstrate that people are very much less rational than is commonly thought of and to set out systemmatically the many reasons this is so. Nobody is exempt (p. 3) The convincing magnetism for me was the undeniable brute reality of the arguments, which I could easily spot as I went through my work day with my colleagues. The chapters on obedience, conformity, and in and out groups directly helped me appreciate more the struggles that I see my Japanese colleagues and students have, as well as internationals living and working in Japan experience. His book helped me accept and avoid some conflicts with some "leaders" by providing me with the poignant irrational category. Otherwise I would have used a different language set to describe their "irrationality". I enjoyed this book through and through. He covers all of the bases...and I do mean all from historical, medical, military, education, finances, with great studies and nicely illustrated stories. The transitions from chapter to chapter, and the pithy summaries at the end of each chapter makes the reading flow. It is a book that definitely provided some great coffee break material at work as well a lot of laughs at home. Still the benefits are to be seen in my personal reflection and application to my own thinking. This report suffers from the halo effect Sutherland describes. His one chapter at the end on the "Causes, Cures and Costs" did leave me wanting more as I felt the curtain was drawn too quickly. But I was not negative because I felt I had got my monies worth from many of the preceding chapters. This is the first book I have read by Sutherland. He is a great writer and I am looking forward to getting into some of his other works. His book is not a formal treatise in logic that one would get from an expert like Copi, or Kahneman. Indeed some research indicates that even with formal training, there is little improvement in our reasoning skills. Nevertheless, Sutherland provides us with a conscious raising book that is sufficient to keep us all humble and honest. Thank you Dr. Sutherland for the tips of how I can make my world a the work world I live in a bit more tolerable with a smile. I hope the book is in line for a second edition.

In This Modern World...
We seem to be surrounded by bad decision making on all levels...from 'road rage' on our highways, to the city council, from the school board to the boardrooms of America. When your fellow man's 'logic' seems to defy reason, turn to Stuart Sutherland for solice, explanation, better decision making strategies...and good hearty laughter. You'll see yourself, your family, friends and co-workers brilliantly described...for better or worse. Best of all, the author gives really rather simple ways to improve our thinking on a daily basis, and helps to understand others who aren't thinking clearly.

Must Read for Anyone in Production
"It's not Magic" is a must read for anyone involved in constantly seeking improvement. The efficient mix of production techniques and management philosophy is needed to be successful in an increasingly competitive workplace. As anyone who has ever been on or around a production line knows the ultimate goal has to be seeking better methods to complete the work. It's very refreshing to see a real life example of how production and philosophy can work so well together. I look forward to the next publication by Klein and Zawacki.

THEORY CLOAKED IN REALITY!
It is refreshing to hear from a professor who has his feet on the ground. The easy stile of writing is very appealable, and the dialog flows easily while devulging the enjoyable relationship of owner, supervisors, line employees and Keen, the professor/consultant. All participate together in the rebirth of a small manufacturing company. All this takes place while decades'old organizational certainties meet with, blend, and in some cases are replaced by new discoveries. The author demonstrates that "salesmanship" is a key ingredient in effecting in-house change. A must read for anyone seeking to improve the bottom line. -- Rodger Faherty

An excellent tool for manufacturing companies !
As vice president for plant operations at a medium scale manufacturing plant in Saint Louis I have searched for an approach to improve the plant's productivity for many years. "It's Not Magic" has given me the tools to approach my problems differently. I have found the book's methods of management applicable to my manufacturing plant. Although I have only been able to test them out on a small scale, I look forward to being able to implement them plant wide. Kudos to Klein and Zawacki for hitting the nail on the head !

More than you could ever want in a cookbook!
I never dreamt I'd see the day when I, of all non-cooking people, would say these words but wow, what a terrific cookbook Jeanne Jones' HEALTHY COOKING is! And you may be asking yourself "if she's a non-cooking person how would she know this is a great cookbook?" Well, I'll tell you. Because cooking is my father's absolute favorite hobby, I've been handed down many a cookbook from him with his hopes that maybe, just maybe, one of them might spark the hidden cook in me. But until HEALTHY COOKING I've never picked up a cookbook and looked at it more than once before placing it on the shelf to collect dust (let alone actually cook something out of it).

So anyway, back to why this book is wonderful. In addition to the obvious perks of the recipes being healthy and fast (the fast part making cooking relatively painless for those of us who don't wish to be in the kitchen any longer than absolutely necessary) the beginning of the book gives great advice on topics such as setting up your kitchen, purchasing poultry, storing food, and much more; the margins of the recipe pages are chock full of tips; but my absolute favorite is the "Spin Off" section at the bottom of each recipe which provides useful ideas for what to do with those pesky leftovers (invaluable information for those of us cooking for only one or two people). What more could you ask for in a cookbook? A sincere thank you to Jeanne Jones for creating such a tremendous cookbook as it's accomplished a feat none other, neither book nor human, could. You got a non-cook cooking!

My favorite cookbook!
This cookbook was the first one I ever bought...and it remains my favorite, even after getting married and amassing a very large cookbook collection. What I love about the book is that all of the recipes are very easy to prepare, yet taste as good as or better than most high-fat recipes. I am a registered nurse, so I am very careful to cook healthful food at home. There are recipes for everything from breakfast and brunch dishes to lunch dinner, dessert, and holiday menus. The Herbed Lemon Chicken is one of our favorite company dishes. This week I am making the following recipes from the cookbook: Tortilla Soup, Lemon-Tarragon Chicken on Cannellini beans, Shrimp Fettuccine, Beef Spaghetti Pie Ole, and Fat Free Fudge Brownies. A lot of the dishes can be prepared ahead of time, so it's a great book for entertaining or preparing holiday meals, as well. Enjoy!

This is one of the most useful cookbooks I own.....
....and I own a lot of cookbooks! Let's face it, who WANTS to cook healthy? When you put so much time, trouble, and expense into cooking what you hope are tasty meals, it's safe to assume that anything loaded with fat and calories will be a big hit. It's not such a sure bet when you're using low-fat this, and reduced-sodium that. But when my husband's doctor ordered him to switch to a low-cholesterol diet, I had to figure something out! I started looking through my many cookbooks, and came across this one by Jeanne Jones. I have to admit, I've had it for a while, and I never had used it much before now. But once I got to really looking at it, I thought, "Hey, these sound really good....like real food!" I went through the entire book and flagged all the recipes that sounded good to me...and when I was finished, there were a LOT of flags sticking out of the book! I made three of the recipes that first week, and my husband didn't even KNOW he was eating healthy! The Baked Quesadillas and Overnight Cheese Strata were every bit as tasty as any recipe using full-fat ingredients. The Tarragon Chicken and Pasta Bake drew rave reviews, and he even took the leftovers to work the next day to nuke for lunch. There's also a great recipe for Fettucine Alfredo, which as we all know, is "Heart Attack on a Plate" in it's original form. This one used fat-free cream cheese and skim milk. Who knew they could taste so good?

The only change I make to the recipes is to add a bit of salt. Since this is technically a "healthy" cookbook, not just low-fat, the author tends to skimp on salt. Since we don't need to do that, I go ahead a add just a bit, but if you are on a low-sodium diet, then the recipes would be just right for you. Next up on the menu....Chile Rellenos Casserole! Or will it be Ham & Cheese Calzone? Hmmmm.....

Sara's Review on Jubal's Wish
I think Jubal's Wish is a very good story. The illustration is very colorful and lively. I love Audrey Wood, she is one of my favorite authors and her stories are really cool. Of all of Audrey Woods books I would have to say that Jubal's Wish is my favorite, it's a really good book.

Charming!
Jubal the bullfrog is so happy on this bright and sunny day, that his feet barely touch the ground as he skips along with his picnic basket. In time, he meets up with two of his neighbors, Gerdy, the toad and Captain Dalbert, the lizard. Both are tired, angry, overworked and depressed. It makes Jubal sad that his friends are so miserable on this beautiful day and so he wishes they could be as happy as he is. With that, a wizard appears and gives him a twinkling wishing star...."Dreams and wishes, wishes and dreams. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't. You never know how they'll turn out in the end." And as Jubal watches, his wish comes true in a very unusal and special way..... Audrey and Don Woods have done it again, writing a simple, gentle story of generosity, caring and love. Their warm and expressive text is only outdone by their vibrant, larger than life artwork, that will entrance youngsters as it almost spills off the page. Together, they have produced a charming fairy tale that's perfect for 3-7 year olds. Jubal's Wish, with it's endearing hero, will delight children of all ages and is a wonderful addition to all bookshelves.

A review of Jubal's Wish
Jubal's wish is a beautifully illustrated (as expected from Don Wood) story with a nice theme about doing for others. It also shows that sometimes when something negative happens that something good can come from it. My two children LOVED it and read/requested it to be read four times in the 24 hours after I gave it to them. My kids are 3 1/2 and 5 1/2 and actually the 5 1/2 year old boy is the more enamoured.

MOPAR or no car: a review of How to rebuild B-Block Mopars
How To Rebuild Big-Block Mopar Engines by Don Taylor is a very informative book. It covers everything from inspection of your old engine, removal from vehicle to disassembly and reassembly. Also includes proper cleaning techniques as well as machining recommendations. This detailed book includes casting numbers for blocks, cranks, rods, cylinder heads, intake manifolds and water pump housings for those who want an accurate restoration or those needing help with identification of parts. This book is more detailed about B/RB disassembly/reassembly and problem areas and tips to make the job easier than other general engine rebuilding books. Don gives step by step instructions on reassembly with plenty of pictures to help. This book will help the novice or experienced engine builder do a better job on his Mopar.

By far the best engine book I've seen
I have rebuilt many engines of many different brands, I have read MANY books on rebuilding these engines, and this book by FAR is the best book I have seen, It gives step by step instructions and it makes doing it SOOO easy, even if you have never picked up a wrench, with this book you can rebuild a Big Block Mopar. This book actually makes doing work fun and easy. This book is a MUST for any person who wants to rebuild a BB Mopar and build it right.

Eric

Must have book for "B" Mopar engines
I have not worked on cars for 20 years but then I bought a 76 Dodge Pickup that needed engine work. I knew that I would be over my head when I removed the valve covers. That is when I decided to get a book on Mopar engines. When I received the book I started reading expecting a book for mechanics, but what I found was a how-to rebuild a big block Mopar. It is written as if the author was telling you step by step just exactly how to remove, disassemble and repair the engine. He told what to look for and how to fix it. Then step by step how to re-assemble the engine and put it back in the vehicle. All of the while passing informative tips and a few tricks. The book helped me avoid several costly mistakes. It is a must have for anyone considering rebuilding a big block Chrysler.

Next Volume Please
I would like to encourage the author to write more volumes on the Illinois Central. This book is a great reference for mid 20th century locomotives and rolling stock. If I may be so bold as to suggest, a volume featuring branch line activities and depots would be an excellent follow up to this fine book.

EXCELLENT PHOTOGRAPHY OF A LEGENDARY RAILROAD
AS AN EMPLOYEE OF THE ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD FOR THE LAST 27 YEARS THIS WAS BY FAR THE MOST INTERESTING BOOK ON THE RAILROAD I HAVE READ. BOTH PHOTOGRAPHY AND CONTENT PUTS THIS BOOK AT THE FRONT OF THE TRAIN.

Orange and White, GREAT!!!!
Good section on the history of the Illinois Central Railroad. Steam section was good. Orange and White was the era I grew up watching on the IC. This book is an AWESOME photographic history of a historical Railroad.

Great book from a different approach
I have in my collection all of the books published on Lego Mindstorms. While everyone else focus on construction of a Lego model with an accompanying program to add functionality to the model, Wilcher takes a different approach.

This book is not for the absolute beginners. You do need to have some prerequisites in electronics and programming. The book only shows you how to carry out the interfacing between the RCX and the outside world (using eg. RC transmitter/receivers, Basic Stamp) but assume you know about potentiometers, resistors etc and also know how to use multimeters. This book is more for the electronically adept users who wishes to use RCX as part of his tools.

Overall, this is book that I would highly recommend to all who wish to use the RCX other than what all the books have on about. I gave it 4 stars (actually I would have preferred 4.5 stars, but Amazon doesn't have that!) as I would really would see Wilcher going in-depth for some of the projects.

Wonderful motivator for Mechatronics
This book is great because it gives step-by-step
explanations on various ways in programming RCX brain
and how to interface with various sensors.
A wonderful motivator for Mechatronics.
Dr. Chung, Lawrence Tech University

Helpful and informative
I found the book easy for me to understand. Although I am relatively new to Mindstorms, I needed to be able to move beyond the basics. The programs provided on the cd gave me some more ideas of where I can go as I develop myself. It's light-hearted and full of illustrations that gave me a thorough understanding of the concepts that he discussed. This book is an asset to any collection.
