An absolutely first-rate book in Behavioral Medicine.
This book covers a great deal of interest and practical value in the areas of Health, Medicine, and Psychology and how they interact. The sections have been written by well-respected experts in their fields. The book is organized in a way that makes it easy to use without resorting to the index. The writing is clear.

There is an introductory section with a brief review of psychological topics that are useful in understanding the remainder of the book and how psychology is applied to medicine.

There is another section dealing with the psychological aspects of health and illness.

The next section concerns itself with psychological assessment and intervention.

Following that is a section on professional health practice.

The final section is a compendium of scores of diseases and disorders discussed in the light of the interaction between psychology and medicine.

This book would be a fine addition to the library of anyone interested in the interplay between mind and medicine, and is a very useful resource.

Case of the Vanishing Corpse

A Scandalous Mystery
This book is amazing. It is full of surprises, scary and wonderful. Robert Newman is a fantastic writer. He takes you threw a ghastly mystery full of illusions. Let me tell you that this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is so suspenseful it will kill you. You won't and can't put the book down. The end results is shocking yet great. If you love mysteries and scandals this is the book for you.

Part of an Excellent Series
This is the second book in his Sherlock Holmes-type mystery series. Only the first book features Holmes; in the rest, Andrew and his friends (both child and adult) solve the mysteries on their own. These are truly excellent and it is a pity they are out of print. Try your local library! They are intelligently written, a little scary, but not too gruesome for those of us with queasy stomachs.

Irreplaceable
My friend has borrowed volume I and I'm afraid he may never give it back... There is so much that is subtle in the Gospels that is brought to light. I've never seen anything else like it. I'm shocked that this work was ever permitted to go out of print.

A treasure!
I am so glad this book is back in print! Can you imagine how valuable a Bible commentary written by early Christians themselves would be? Well, this comes very close! St. Thomas Aquinas himself compiled this opus from sermons and commentaries on the Gospels written by the early Church Fathers. He arranged their thoughts in such a way that they form a continuous commentary on each Gospel, verse-by-verse. How I wish Aquinas had done this with the rest of Sacred Scripture as well! It's pricey, but well worth it for the serious Bible scholar.

A Masterpiece
This book has it all: great pictures, designer bios, history, trends, etc. It is classy, fun, and perfect for the lingerie lover in all of us!

You'll never call it "underwear" again!
A Century of Lingerie, by Karen W. Bressler, expertly and artistically traces the history of lingerie over the past 100 years.

The montage of photos and stories about the evolution of lingerie, and those responsible for it, is so elegantly presented that the reader, appropriately, will not know where to look first!

Ms. Bressler captures and demonstrates the style, expression and majesty that are part of every aspect of fashion -- and life!

Men and women alike will be intrigued and impressed by the variety and development of undergarments and the story of how we've come to think of underwear as much more than an extra layer!

A "must-buy," A Century of Lingerie provides poignant insight into the important roles undergarments have played in our culture as the girdle has given way to the proliferation of the thong! Portraying a rare view into the bedrooms of yesteryear, the reader may have a somewhat altered view of the ancestors (s)he once thought were so innocent!

Whether thumbing through the book on a rainy day or a sultry summer's eve, alone or with another, A Century of Lingerie is sure to captivate and provide hours of stimulation!

Imagining yourself or that special someone in the items tastefully depicted, you'll be apt to go out and purchase something adventurous for yourself or your mate . . . . And you'll never again refer to undergarments as "underwear!"

As you complete your journey through "A Century of Lingerie" and reflect on just how far panties and brassieres have progressed over the past 100 years, you'll turn that last page expectantly longing for a glimpse into the excitement that is sure to come with the lingerie of the next millennium . . .

This book is clearly written with outstanding illustrations
Clinical Periodontology thoroughly covers the cellular science involved in oral health, as well as applicable tissue functioning. The book then clearly describes the genesis, diagnosis and management of periodontal disease. As a scientist who is not a dentist, the illustrations were outstanding and led to a much better understanding of the material. Congratulations to the authors and editors for putting together a book this seamless in both its description of clinical periodontology and its focus on solving problems.

A First-Rate Text That Challenges As Well As Informs
Milkovich and Newman's text is sets the standard for Compensation and Human Resources texts, period. From its strategic decisions framework it clearly illustrates that compensation policy can be a key to unlocking an organization's capabilities (and the ever elusive sustainable competitive advantage).

The strength of the book is that it extracts and builds on key research findings in a way that advances the body of compensation knowledge (in a way pleasing to academics) and is relevant to practitioners. Chapter 2 on Strategic Perspectives and Chapters 9 & 10 on Pay for Performance best exemplify the confluence of research relevance and tactical usefulness.

It is absolutely a must read for anyone who is a student of organizations or who attempts to manage one (not just compensation managers).

Uses superb strategic model to supply decision-making tools
A 5++ - the best BUSINESS text i've read. This is the first book i've read where i both grew intellectually and in tactical/application skills. This compensation text is quite unusual in that it effectively reduces huge bodies of research in business strategy, economics, organizational behavior and compensation to provide a holistic business model to analyze compensation decisions - all in the first three chapters. The Milkovich/Newman approach creatively blends a conceptual underpining (the why) with tactical details (the what and how). This blending allows them to supply enormous value by reducing the myriad of compensation decisions to 4 major pieces. The utility of this elegance is that long after reading the book or taking a course using this book, you'll still remember the framework and steps to both build from scratch and to adjust a compensation system - not just the what, but the why. i personally felt quite empowered and ready to take on compensation work after reading this text.

This text is really designed for those compensation practioners that want to understand how compensation might be used to supply a sustainable competitive advantage. The authors' deep reading and involvement in both research and consulting with business shows here. They worked very hard to allow us to absorb the research implication and to use the tools, without our having to read the full body of research or to invent the tools.

The authors balance the research perspective by developing a working model and applying it to real world cases where they have consulted. The reader is then challenged to apply the model to case situations presented in the book and to their work practice.

Lastly, some things i've learned from this book:

1. you get what you pay for ... -- the research clearly shows that pay is a key motivator and that people will behave as they're incentivized by their pay systems. -- the implication is that EVERY compensation system, no matter whether it's planned or evolves, supplies a network of incentives that in part direct employee behavior and business outcomes.

2. compensation systems can be designed to support a sustainable competitive advantage. -- through understanding the motivational incentives and how they tie into business strategy. -- a "universalistic" compensation approach that says there's one right answer supplies some good practices, but doesn't fully explain observed motivational differences.

3. Compensation must tie tightly to the work process (work flow) or it will surely fail in it's objectives. -- how many companies talk about changing their cultures while they don't change or even understand the motivational impacts of their pay plans?

4. There's no right answer, only a good model to help. -- is a tournament pay system (tied to an individual / hierachical workflow) better than an egalitarian system (tied to a team workflow)? it depends ... and that's where Milkovich/Newman fill in the blanks.

A M-U-S-T read for anyone participating in making compensation decisions - whether you're in school or already a compensation vice president.

Conflict in the Classroom: The Education of At-Risk and Troubled Students

Very helpful for the regular classroom teacher
This book is a useful mix of theory and specific strategies, of reports on current research and examples of best practices. After reading it I think I understand better the dynamics of conflict in the classroom, and I also have some new things to try in crisis situations. It is a huge and ovewhelming book which most teachers would avoid, so I cut it apart into five sections. I handed the sections to teachers, who read them enthusiastically when they would never have tackled the whole book. It can be read like that, in sections, and not necessarily in order. The content is highly recommended but the format must be made teacher friendly!

The best single-source for working with troubled students!
Long and Morse have written and collected a panorama of articles which collectively define the state of the art in aproaches to troubled and troubling students. This book goes beyond the traditonal to the truly insightful interventions which focus holistically on the child or youth and his struggles within systems. Strategies for regular education and special education teachers are clearly described, and a list of resources in areas from sexual abuse to grief are inculuded. The book begins with a collection of short stories from contemporary literature in an intoduction to the reader into the minds and lives of children who are emotionally disturbed. Conflict in the Classroom has been a classic in the field for 30 years, and this 1996 edition is as worthy of the same honor as its fine earlier editions

A Fascinating Read
This author has accomplished quite a feat by taking what could be extraordinarily dry material and masterfully crafting a very interesting book. Rarely do you find a scholarly work of this caliber that you can read simply for pleasure. Mr. Newman debunks all of the supposed truisms about the Middle Ages to put the era in its proper perspective in history. This is a marvelous, considered, detailed accounting of what life was really like in those times, and it was not nearly so dreary as you have been told. This thought-provoking book is a must-read. You won't want to put it down.

very nice
"Daily Life in the Middle Ages" provides and excellent look at life, food, cleanliness, warfare and other aspects of the period. It is at the same time very accessible to the lay-reader such as me. After reading about the development of armor, the reader will look at "Braveheart" a little differently. The style is informative, but neither dusty nor without humor. Higly recommend.

This could be the start of something big
Six weeks ago I had never heard of Bernard J. Taylor and now I'm addicted. My last major addiction was Patricia Cornwell, with James Patterson as a stopgap when there was nothing new by her.  Both write absorbing page turners, but in the end I became frustrated by the lack of depth in their characterization - particularly with their bad guys, whose minds we never really get into.  (With Patterson, even Alex Cross remains a very vague character, and some of his plot devices are so ridiculous that they rob his work of all credibility). This writer offers some great characters, along with the page-turning readability of Patterson and Cornwell's attention to procedural detail (although not so much that you want to skip over it, as I often do with Cornwell's autopsies). He gets right inside the mind of the killers, and in this one you get to meet a truly original and very plausible killer. This is a good introduction to Terrell Newman and the other regular characters. I particularly like the women characters in his books - women who stand up for themselves without compromising their femininity. If only there were more characters like this in the world.

Crime fiction at its best
This is a great introduction to the Terrell Newman series. As in Taylor's other Newman novels, all the characters - even the minor ones - are vivid and well realized without a stereotype in sight. The character of Robert Stanton, the "deliverer", is particularly well realized and you almost feel sympathy for him as he goes about his killings.

There were also a number of amusing moments to lighten the darkness of the piece. I particularly enjoyed the scene where Stanton is looking through the personal ads and adding his comments.

It is rare that I can empathize with a serial killer, but I was touched and also amused on occasions by him. While the theme is dark - in the mould of Hannibal Lecter - there are some very entertaining and amusing moments and the dialogue is terrific, helping to bring the characters to life in a way that a lot of novelists fail to do.

Having read two of the other Terrell Newman novels before this one, it confirms my impression that Bernard J. Taylor is a major new name in crime fiction - and literature in general. The writing is excellent.

Great book!
This is a lovely little book with great pictures which has really helped my daughter learn moves and draw them. The stories are well written and it's great that a currently popular ballet dancer helped with it, not one retiring and probably never heard from again. I reccomend this book for people who like ballet and the stories, it a great book to read to children!

The Five Classic Ballets - An Introduction
This is a perfect introduction for the young, serious balletstudent to THE classic ballets: The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Coppelia, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. It tells the story(s) AS DANCED, an important difference for a student of dance. Ms. Bussell's personal comments and pictures ignite a young dancer's dreams of a professional career. My daughter just turned ten and the detail was appropriate for her reading and interest level. Although the read-along-feature makes it look like it's for younger readers, I think ten is the youngest age I'd recommend unless you have an EXCEPTIONAL reader who also LOVES ballet. This review is based on the book. I haven't had a chance to listen to the audio yet; it's available on cassette or CD. Amazon's price was the best...
