The House of Correction: Book Four in the Terrell Newman Detective Series

Love and mystery on a slave farm
This is an extraordinary book that looks at the world of BDSM with an open-mindedness that is exemplary. Before I read this book I had already grown to love the characters of Terrell Newman, FBI profiler Walter Selig and the other regular characters in the series, but I never expected to find myself enchanted by a guy who runs a slave farm! With the character of Edward Harrison, who keeps a stable of voluntary slaves, Taylor has come up with an exceptionally vivid and arresting character - a man who trains and keeps slaves and writes books on BDSM while cultivating orchids on the side. The story of the couple at the center of the mystery (a lawyer and his dominatrix mistress) ends up being a very moving one. But there are some very amusing scenes along the way - including one where a very uptight fundamentalist minister visits the slave farm and concludes that it is a model Christian community.

A great book about knowing and being yourself.
I first read this book almost 20 years ago, when I was a young person trying to figure out who the real "me" was and how she fit into the world. Even now, with children of my own, I find this book very readable. Serenity Ross is nineteen years old, a college student majoring in elementary ed (but longing to major in art history) who is engaged to be married to Peter Holland, a fellow student who is seeking to better understand the world into which he will become a man. Serenity's parents, middle-aged middle-class suburbanites, hide their true feelings about their daughter's marriage by planning a real dog-and-pony show; but the bride herself feels a yearning for something more meaningful than a big church wedding and country-club reception. This yearning leads her on a weekend visit to Oliver Otis, her father's cousin, and his wife, Daphne, in rural Rhode Island. The visit is only the first step for Serenity on a journey -- of self-discovery, and an exploration of her family's spiritual roots --on which she is joined by Peter and, eventually, her parents as well. The Otises are members of the Society of Friends, better known as the Quakers, and it is their ability to look honestly at life and see the good in it that guides Serenity and Peter on their way. But don't think that these are two-dimensional characters, oozing with saccharine sweetness and dispensing glib advice; Daisy Newman, the author and herself a member of the Society of Friends, draws them with loving but unflinching honesty. Oliver is a bit of a neat freak who likes things to be just so, and Daphne -- left unable to speak by a stroke -- struggles with anger when her eyes and her expressions are not enough to convey her thoughts to those around her. Their relationship with their daughter, Heather, who is married and lives a life of urban sophistication in London, is a lesson in miscommunication, and reminds us that even those we look up to in life are capable of making mistakes and handling things badly. If you know young people who are trying to find and express their genuine selves in this crazy, fast, shallow world, this book is terrific. Heck, if you're no longer young but looking for a good read to remind you that the best things in life are free, you won't go wrong here. (Be aware, however, that one of the issues Serenity and Peter confront is pre-marital sex -- definitely PG rated, no details or graphic descriptions, but it does occur and the question of "Should we, shouldn't we?" is a key component of the theme of the book. Kids 12 and older should be able to handle it very well.)

An important and very moving work
I started listening to this audio book because the Hole in the Wall Camp is nearby and as it is a charity we sometimes contribute to, I wanted to know more. I was expecting perhaps a documentary type work or something somewhat depressing but it was exactly the opposite. The stories are so moving and create a better understanding of what these authors, these children, have in their hearts and embrace in thier lives.

Excellent reference book, good reading
This is quite the best specialist dictionary for collectors and dealers, and for translators like myself, checking that the English expression means what we hope. But there is a danger. Look up one expression and you find yourself reading several other entries as well, just for the fun of it. A most entertaining and erudite work. I know of nothing else to match it.

Excellent Resource!
The author gives historical information, info on gathering materials, as well as detailed instructions with excellent photographs, on Indian basket weaving from several tribes. From some of her comments about the weavers and their attitudes, I suspect she knows them personally or at least did her research very well! Excellent documentation and bibliography. You can even learn some Indian words! I highly recommend this book and want to add it to my library!

Simply Inspiring
I read a condensed version of this wonderful book...3 times. I deeply appreciated the view into Quaker life with which I was previously unfamiliar, and which I found deeply soul-satisfying. This amazing love story is grounded in the values we can so easily lose sight of in our busy, overly stimulating modern world: simplicity, devotion, honesty, equality of people, and oneness with the land. Imagine marriage based on the desires of two people to cherish and serve each other. I look forward to reading the complete book because I don't want to miss even one detail. Enjoy!

Inshore Fishing the Carolinas' Coast
If you fish the Carolinas' Coast, Newman's book is a must. Either get started or improve your fishing using this excellent work from an authoritative author. I was tired of checking this book out of the library every time that I headed for the Carolina coast, so I bought it from Amazon.

I pick up this book when I am planning a trip to the coast and pack it along with my fishing gear. I reread key points that I have highlighted, and look for pointers and secrets for my next fishing quest.

It is an authoritative, full reference and 'how-to" for the Carolinas that goes in depth on the mainstays - spotted trout, blues, red drum, flounder, mackerel, sheepshead, and more! It covers location, techniques, equipment, lures, rigs, bait, timing, courtesy, safety, and issues. It is a comprehensive and concise guide that does not overwhelm you with myriad details and choices. You can get started with confidence that your are getting a pro's advice on the right approach.

This book can get you off to a fast start, especially if you lack experience with a popular species. By using Newman's book as my guide, I started catching spotted trout and flounder. Now, I go back to it to keep improving on what I have learned and look forward to new adventures (and fish) courtesy of Newman.

For the cost of two or three lures, this book will improve your fishing on the Carolinas' Coast.
