Dorland's Medical Dictionary
Dorland's Pocket Medical dictionary is among the best medical dictionaries. It is nice and thick - lots of info between those covers. As a nursing student in an R.N. program it was a required reference book. 20 years later I am ordering another one because I gave my old copy to a new nursing student and I now I need it. I highly recommend it to students in the health sciences, medical coders, technicians and degreed health professionals. It would also be a good home reference for the interested layman.

Right On, Harriet
A compelling and highly readable indictment of slavery in America, "Dred" takes risks that "Uncle Tom's Cabin" did not. The ending of "Dred" is powerful and strong, unlike that of "Uncle Tom", which seemed to advocate ultimately that the slaves should be freed and encourged to return to Africa. Harriet Beecher Stowe is just as sharp in her criticism of the North and she is to the South. She is quick to condemn the passive profiteers of slavery as she is the slaveholder himself. I throughly enjoyed this book. I will read it a secod time.

Among Newman's Best
This "essay" is a tour d'force of the force of the power of inferential versus deductive reasoning. This is an unique aposteriori argument for the existence of God, but unfolds an argument in a manner wholly different from the past, such as Aquinas, for example. Newman is a very persuasive author, who uses his evidence judiciously and validly. People of faith will find this exposition worth the perspective.

But, this book can stand on its own as a superlative example of brilliant exposition, using Newman's usually elegant style, and enjoying a journey that seems unlikely from its impetus. The first chapter is particularly difficult, but after that, the reading is engaging and remarkable.

More relevant than ever in the age of instant information
I have used Newman's rules for evaluating the credibility of information, and finding credible sources, every day since I was his student in the late 1960's.

These critical skills have never been more imporant to me than they are now in times of crisis, in this global village where the number of sources and the volume of information/disinformation is overwhelming.
