In Search of a Theory of Evolution
The public Darwin debate doesn't really match the progress of biological research. And experts in the field seem reticent to point to the limits of the standard theories. Here we are told plainly, Darwinism has no theory of the generative. And the breakthroughs in developmental genetics fail to explicate the sources of organismic form. The text acknowledges that concern with the gene has overshadowed all other aspects of the discussion.
This highly interesting, not too technical, work explores the work being done on evolutionary innovation. A theory of evolution should explicate both innovation and diversification. But natural selection can only explain how what already exists is maintained or transformed in the process of ecological survival. The standard explanations of variation and natural selection do not really explain this '
source of form' aspect of evolution, and we are presented with ambiguous statements about an evolutionary toolkit, in the developmental version, whose origins could not spring from the processes described in the Neo-Darwinian Synthesis. It seems an advance that a technical work by experts in the field would point this out. This is a very useful glimpse of the real work needed in biology, and should prove a useful refuge from the confusing public discourse on evolution that is generally less than helpful.

Brilliant as a Mantegna frescoe
I found this slim volume to be invigorating and richly characterized. Christensen draws you into the court intrigue of a real 15th century family, reminiscent (but altogether different) from our posmodern conception of the "soap opera." The characters are believable, we are taken into their world and we are made to feel their pain and joy. A wonderful translation from Danish by Denise Newman. Bravo!

Paul's Glory-Christology: Tradition and Rhetoric (Novum Testamentum, Supplements)
Published in Hardcover by Brill Academic Publishers (1997)
Author: Carey C. Newman
Amazon base price: $215.00

Review from a former student
I studied under Carey Newman for three years in my undergrad studies. This volume, an adaptation and expansion of Newman's dissertation, explores in great detail the background for Paul's use of the term "glory" in his writings. Great emphasis is placed on Paul's "Christophany" (the appearance of the risen Jesus to Paul on the Damascus road) as the lens through which the apostle understands Jesus as the divine glory spoken of in the Old Testament. Although very technical in nature, this book offers great insight into the writings of the apostle Paul. Highly recommended.

Oh Those Wonderful Pigs.....
"The pigs are coming to play, hooray!/The pigs are coming today./We'd better take care to completely prepare,/A minute's too long to delay." The entire town is up, out, and busy cooking a marvelous gastronomic spread for their soon to be arriving porcine friends. "We're planning a feast for ten thousand at least,/We're cooking a fabulous meal./We're mixing and baking and fixing and making/A spread that will make those pigs squeal." And after eating all their yummy treats...fried green tomatoes, cheese tortellini, gooey chop suey, pastrami on rye, mashed sweet potatoes, buckets of apple brown betty, mountains of chips with fountains of dips, and coconut chocolate cream pie..., it's the pigs turn to thank their hosts. "They sing and they dance and they swing and they prance,/They light up the stage like the sun./Our hands get to clapping, our feet set to tapping,/And then we all join in the fun." A good time is definitely had by all..... The dynamic duo, author, Leslea Newman and illustrator, Erika Oller are back, and after singing the praises of cats (Cats, Cats, Cats!)and dogs (Dogs, Dogs, Dogs!) in earlier picture books, are now ready to take on pigs. Ms Newman's engaging, rhyming text is filled with rhythm, energy, humor, and fun, and is complemented by Ms Oller's playful watercolors, rich in warm, soft tones and expressive, eye-catching details. With a silly twist at the end to tickle your funny bone, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs! is a rollicking, fun-filled read little ones 3-7 will beg to hear again and again at story time. "We're tired and weary, in fact we're quite bleary,/But none of us can fall asleep./We've got to hold steady, we've got to get ready,/Our next guests are coming-the sheep!"

Info on Plastics
This is a wonderful tool for the artist looking for information on plastic as art medium. It is certainly more comprehensive than any of the more current books I've been able to find on the subject. This book is written for the inexperienced to the experienced plastics artist. The copy I have is in color, but it was also printed in black & white.

I only wish that someone would update it again, I'm sure that with the advanced in technology an update would be well received.

A sample of the contents of this book:
plastic Quality, polyester resins, foams, acrylics, vinyl, laminating, sculpture, bas relief, casting.
It also covers important details like expected longevity, fire resistance, colorants, what temperatures the plastic can with stand etc and much more.

I am not sure why there is a tage added to the end of my review, I own the sofcover color copy. I bought it after I borrowed older hardcover copy from the El Cajon public library.

Praying With John Cardinal Newman: Companions for the Journey
Published in Paperback by St. Mary's Press (1997)

A Help for Our Own Journey
Being a book that is part of the Companions for the Journey series, the reader is befriended and strengthened by the strong faith of John Cardinal Newman. It is like having a wise Grandfather as a role model. One doesn't need to be a Catholic to benefit from the wisdom contained here. Whether enjoyed in a group setting or used alone, the meditations nourish and stir the readers to open their hearts and minds to what is and what could be in terms of their own spiritual selves and relationship to God. Weidner gives us insight into Newman's human struggles with faith and spirituality, (no different than our own today), then provides the tools for us to carry ourselves forward through reflections and scripture. Thank you Halbert Weidner!
