Revealing truth of homelife with an autistic child
Bill is so candid in his telling of the Davis family's life with Chris. He gives so much of himself and asks nothing in return. He is constantly out in the community advocating for not only his child but all children and adults with Autism. I'm proud to say I know him and I throughly enjoyed his book. If your child has been diagnosed you really should read this. Some parts will make you cry but many will make you laugh and say "Oh my god I'm not the only one!" It's an excellent book told from a point of view many never get to see. -Tracy Gipe, mother of a ten year old with ASD and his two younger siblings without.

A Fathers Story of Love and Commitment
When starting this book I felt it would be a technical rendition of an Autistics child's life. Boy was I surprised to read the heart felt story about a father, a mother and two children caught up in the baffling world of Autism. From the diagnosis, through the stress of daily life the commitment between these family members was so touching and compelling forcing me to reexamine my own life's priorities. The Davis' obstacle ridden devotion to further education and community awareness of this disease is nothing less than admirable, and hopes that through Mr. Davis' advocacy work he can compel others to open their eyes.

Life-Changing Book
You can't miss the hard-headed commitment, the dogged won't-take-no-for-an-answer determination of this father in his loving and relentless pursuit of appropriate services for his son with autism. Bill Davis "tells it like it is" -- no wishy-washiness, no pie-in-the sky, no empty promises or fairy tale endings. His book makes clear the unfathomable depth of his love -- his passion -- for his beautiful son Chris, and the unyielding belief that no work is too hard, no frustration too crippling, no sacrifice too great if the goals are to provide for his son avenues by which this child with autism can make sense of our complex, swirling, overstimulating world, and find ways to express his own rich perceptions, ideas, and wit.

Read this book if you have a child with autism. Buy it and give it as a gift (as I have twice already) to someone you know who has a child with autism.

Read this book, too, if you have or know a child with ANY disability, for in Bill and Jae Davis' story of working with educational authorities, "working the system", "fighting the system" , improving the system, and not "settling" for halfway measures is a model for all parents of ALL kids with so-called special needs.

But read this book if what you're looking for is just a good love story. The love that springs out of every page is real and unsentimental. The whole story is here -- the love of Bill and Jae for each other despite fatigue and frustrations and fights, the love for their daughter Jessica and Jessica's love for Chris, and the loving personality of Chris himself, the true hero of the book.

Reading Berryman to the Dog

Sassy, Wry, Compassionate
Reading Berryman to the Dog is a fine first book by an accomplished writer. You'll go back and back to these startling, satisfying poems. Carlisle's is one of the truly original voices in contemporary poetry. The poems are sensuous, muscular, textured. You won't soon forget "The Redhead Conjures Him Up" or "Questions for Joe": "In March you were there,.../wearing a broad expanse of belly, by June/you were gone...." If you're tired of tired poems, this book will revive you.

This isn't just personal, it's also business
I met Wendy at a poets' workshop in Arkansas back in June 1996: her turf, not mine. Imagine me, a New York Jew whose marriage was headed toward the shoals forming an alliance with another middle-aged writer, in the middle of Wal-Mart country. She's just about the only person I kept up with from that week in northern Arkansas, and over the years we've exchanged writing and confidences. And now there's this book...and nothing prepared me for the power in it. All the "reviewer words" apply: serene, savage, beautiful. I read the title poem to my Significant Other the night the book arrived and when I was done I had unexpected and unwanted tears in my eyes. You don't read work this fine every day...which is why Wendy's writing stands out as clearly as Wendy herself.

Tough and moving.
Another voice from the tough and moving tribe of modern woman poets. (see Kim Addonizio, Joan Larkin & Belle Waring). Carlisle's poems are well crafted and sharp.

Useful with Illuminating examples from her life!
Wendy writes in a most accessible style. Contrary to some other's opinions, I found her personal examples and object lessons as both instructive and illuminating! My own life has experienced parallels, even if in less formal ways.

But the best reason to get this book is to enjoy sharing it!
Wendy--thank you for taking the time to write it!

PS Again, contrary to those who think she's anti-feminist, think again! Individualist feminism means not having to apologize for being who you are, and not kow-towing to the pervasive "group think" of orthodox gender-feminazis! Brava!

If you believe my wife this is a great book...
I bought this for my wife as a present when she expressed an interest in finding some rational guidlines to help improve her life. Since I knew that McElroy espoused the benifits of Reason (thus the title) and since I also had heard good reviews from some friends of mine I decided to give it a try.

Though I haven't read the whole book the parts I did read were very well thought out, and my wife has raved about it... So, you might ask, "Did it improve her life?" I think the answer is YES. Anything that helps you to take a more objective approach to life is beneficial.

Excellent, helpful and excellently well written
Wendy McElroy is one of the best in the business at expressing complex ideas in clear and concise terms. She debates issues not on emotion or in terms of 'I win, you lose', but rather in terms of getting down to what matters. This book is excellent for helping others, men and women, to learn how to get past the spin and the reactionary smokescreens in order to get down to the heart of the matter...Wendy debates with men and women on volatile issues every week. She is experienced and knowledgeable, as well as highly respected by both sides of the gender debates. These qualities shine through in this book and make it a must read.

Informative and most interesting reading about breads.
This is the first book I've read by Elizabeth David. Her writing is clear and fun to read. The information contained in the book is detailed, the historical documents impressive. Though the book is not recommended for those looking for immediately usable recipes, I would recommend it to anyone interested in baking and learning more about it.

A medley of culinary delights:
The sensuous aroma of baking bread filled my mind as I read the exquisite prose of Elizabeth David. Perfect for those who have the original old English oven and owning your own flour mill will increase the enjoyment of making these rare breads. As I devoured my domestically produced delights, an almost orgasmic pleasure assaulted my sensory organs. There are no greater pleasures in the world than these.

Informative and engaging
Not just a cookbook, though there are plenty of recipes. Not merely a history, though abounding in historical sources and anecdotes. Not a textbook, but with enough theory for just about anyone. Not literature proper, but Ms. David's prose flows beautifully. The book is simultaneously informative, thoughtful, engaging, useful and most of all a pleasure to read. The book is equally at home in the kitchen as the living room. Simply a wonderful book.

Those teachable moments that change lives!
If you're looking for a picture book that handles the topic of racism tenderly for young children, then SISTER ANNE'S HANDS is an excellent choice indeed!

Seven-year-old Anna Zabrocky is excited about her first day in the second grade. She is also very curious about her new teacher, Sister Anne, an African-American nun. Anna has never encountered a black person up close and personal before. Therefore, she feels a little uncertain and nervous as she avoids Sister Anne's gentle touch of welcome on the first day of school. Soon all of Anna's apprehensions vanish as her classroom comes alive. Sister Anne's warmth and gentleness engages them in learning new things, sharing wonderful stories and telling hearty jokes. Just when everything feels perfect for the new school year, someone hurls a paper airplane that sails by Sister Anne's head and hits the blackboard. On its wings were written some very hurtful things. Not only did this cruel act bring a great deal of pain to Sister Anne's eyes, but a sense of guilt comes upon Anna as though she had crafted the paper airplane herself. It is how Sister Anne chooses to take this painful moment and turn it into a teachable moment that makes this book so great. By the close of the school year, it is obvious that the strength and courage of this teacher changes the lives of her students forever.

The lyrical movement of the text along with the dream like illustrations of a classroom and library from the 1960's enhances this story that much more. This is truly a beautiful book!

An inspired view of the 1960's from a child and a black nun.
This book made me cry, every time I read it. I remember going to school with "penguins" as teachers, and the horrible bigotry happening in the schools. The pictures are breath-taking, and the words are powerful. I bought it for the parochical school my children go to. If you buy one book for your 3-8 grader, buy this one.

A Radiant and Moving Book
Sister Anne teaches her young students not only their math and reading, but important lessons in justice, dedication, and love. The text reflects the simple, concrete experiences of a child while suggesting how these experiences gently deepen the young narrator's understanding. The lovely illustrations are slightly muted in tone, appropriately giving the book the look of a memory recalled. Outstanding in every way.

PERFECT reading for young girls!
All of the books in this series are really just sweet. As a librarian, it is refreshing to find a series that I can whole-heartedly recommend. (It gets 4 instead of 5 stars because, unlike the authors marvelous Henry & Mudge books, you cannot recommend them to everyone). This is Jane Austen for third graders!

Another charmer from WV author
I LOVE this book! I did a literature box on this book for a class and fell in love with the characters. It's about 3 cousins who live w/ their aunt for the summer while their parents are on a ballet tour. They go through different adventures, facing each one with courage, ingenuity, and wit. They contain great character ed models. I would recommend to any 1-6 grader(especially girls) who like a good read.

Cookies From Cousins
This book is a charming ,warm story that is funny! The minute I finished, I wanted to read it again. I would give this book a five anyday! Lily ,Tess and Rosie are great charactors and I think Cynthia Rylant is an all time favorite author.

This is one book every teenager has to read!
Wow! This is the book that started me onto the series. Since then, I have bought almost the whole collection! Chad reminds me so much of a guy in my school, and has awoken me to respecting guys - or girls - that don't hang out with the right crowd. By reading this book, I can see the typical teenage girl in Shauna and I could relate to many of her difficulties. All in all, this is one book that has every ounce of my approval!!!

Such a great book!
This book is a page turner! Each chapter, you get to swich points of view. You'll be in the point of view of Shaunna, then Chad. It is so great, with a happy ending!

Absolutely a must!
If you are a fan of the Elfquest comics, this is really a must to own. Lots of facts are to be revealed about Bearclaw's leadership and about the elf he was and if you are fan of Strongbow, you really must read it...

Why?
Because in this book you will find all kinds of emotion, from happiness to desperation and grief. And a dark chapter in the history of the Wolfriders is enlightened. What kind of chief, lifemate and father was Bearclaw?
And...
Did you ever wanted to know more about Strongbow, the silent archer? And about his deceased child? Then this issue is worth to read. His dislike of changes, it doesn't come out of nowhere, does it? Read and you'll know.

Not only this issue, but all the issues drawn by Wendy Pini are worth to read... you won't regret it......

A very complex look at a complex character.
Bearclaw isn't an easy character to love, and he definitely isn't the stereotypical nurturing, loving, peacable Wolfrider. The book details how he came to make war on the humans and firmly sets responsibility for that war just as squarely on his shoulders as on the humans'. Prejudice, racial hatred, violent childrearing, and Dumb Boy Mistakes abound here. After reading this book, I came to understand that the Pini's elves are in their way just as human as we are, and just as capable of unpleasant behavior and beliefs.

In "Hidden Years", when Ember asks her father, Cutter (whose hand is raised to slap her), "Who taught you to do that, anyway?", the question is all the more poignant, and Cutter's childrearing beliefs in the face of Bearclaw's treatment become all the more remarkable.

I was quite jarred when, midway through the book, another artist took over -- this new artist had a very different style from Wendy and honestly I did not like that style much -- but eventually Wendy took over again.

I'd consider this a must-have in an Elfquest reader's library. It very efficiently balances the overly-good image the elves have.

Wolfrider
I loved this book. Not only is the art work beautiful, the story is one I've been wanting to see for quite some time. If you don't have this book in your collection already, I recommend adding it.

A practical guide for affirming personal ministry
This is a great guide for the seeker or believer who has a heart to serve and needs a process to explore their personal uniqueness. The servant profile of passion, spiritual gifts and personality is a simple yet effective framework for facilitating a person to find pertinent ministry outlets. Having experienced the process personally, I found the design and flow of the course to be especially good, from the video vignettes to the huddle groups to the gift affirmation process, in which you have others help give perspective to your gifts. I also found the immplementation and leadership materials to be quite helpful in proposing and putting to work a gift-based ministry design in the local church. The only downside to the Network gift-based approach MIGHT be the "modernist" flavor that permeates the material. If you identify more with "postmodern" perspectives you might find Rick Warren's SHAPE process a bit more resonating. Overall though, a very good book that has had a signifigant impact in how churches are designing ministries and placing volunteers for service....I heartily recommend it.

Everything the Network Consultant needs to know in a nutshel
A concise and easy to use guide for consultants using the Network system in their churches. This guide succeeds in giving detailed guidance through the consultation (step 2) process of learning how to apply Spiritual Gifts. Network is an amazing system of assisting Christians in discovering and applying their spiritual gifts and talents to building God's Kingdom. These materials are definietly the means of growing transformed disciples who will transform the world through dedicated and enthusiastic service in God's Kingdom. This guide is a MUST for everyone who is a consultant in the Network Process! It give the ins and outs of consultations with example phrases and detailed outlines. I wouldn't want to consult without it!

Discover this NOW
I just completed the class this book accompanies. This was a milestone event for my wife and me. Both of us were saying "No wonder I'm like this and you're like that." I would recommend this for you not only to find your place in church (which it can help you with), but also to find your place in life. This book can focus you in on your Passion (where you should be), your Gifts (what you should be doing) and your Personal Style (how you will be doing it). This book will shine a light on you. Stop fighting your innate makeup and tendencies. And figure out just exactly what you are and how God made you.
