thought provoking work
Wendy Kesselman's play beautifully juxtaposes the inner turmoil of her young protagonist with her grandmother's memories of World War II. It is a play rich with feeling and original in thought.

praise from Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality

Sex therapist and author Wendy Maltz and writer Suzie Boss have combined their talents in this new book about women's sexual fantasies. Together they explore the origins of women's most private thoughts, the most common fantasy roles for women, and how sexual fantasies may function to enhance one's sex life. Wendy Maltz's capacity as one of our country's leading experts with respect to healing from past sexual abuse is also reflected in this book. Chapters on how to recognize fantasy traps and heal or even change unwanted fantasies provide individuals with important insights and tools to alter disturbing fantasies. Finally, the authors offer advice on how to share fantasies with your lover and how to create new fantasies.
I found this book remarkable as it addresses an important issue in a very matter of fact way. Once again, it becomes clear how diverse women's sexualities are. The authors provide a logical framework for different fantasy styles by separating sexual fantasies into two broad categories, 1) scripted fantasies which may contain scripted plots and identifiable characters versus 2) unscripted fantasies with a primary focus on sensations rather that character roles. These two categories are by no means exclusive. In fact, many women draw from both in order to make up their personal fantasies.

Different women have different modes for getting sexually aroused, and while some prefer visual stimulation, others may find that auditory, tactile, olfactory, kinesthetic (related to body movement) or flavor stimuli are important ingredients to trigger sexual arousal. Maltz and Boss conclude: "…Sex therapists have recognized for years that fantasy can be an effective aid in helping women with sexual performance. They have frequently recommended the use of fantasies to boost sexual response, sort of like a vibrator of mind…The beauty of fantasy is that we can tap this wellspring of creativity at any time, in any place, with no one else privy to our thoughts…"

I very much agree that sexual fantasies are private thoughts, which do not necessarily have to be shared with others. For those who choose to share their fantasies with a partner for sexual enrichment, the authors offer sound advice on how to best accomplish this and they provide various guidelines for how to enact fantasies while honoring each other's limits.

In conclusion, I can highly recommend Private Thoughts to anyone, female or male, who wants to learn more about the power of women's sexual fantasies.

Real analysis based on legitimate research
For anyone suspicious that Nancy Friday's dated My Secret Garden lacked legitimate research and analysis, this new book is a welcome resource. It gives the reader more than just summaries of women's fantasies--although obviously you cannot write this book without describing them. But this book goes on to show how to use those fantasies.

Insights into Incest
"Incest and Sexuality" sympathetically and incisevely explores the effects of incest on survivors and offers both they and their intimate partners a great deal of information on ways to get past the abuse. The work deals with a wide range of incestuous circumstances, and either a survivor or one itimately involved with a survivor should find the book well worth the read.

Great Book. The first I read in my journey toward wholeness.
The authors do a wonderful job of connecting with the incest victim. They obviously are very skilled in listening to their clients and learning from them. I felt they were inside my head, writing my story. The guidelines for healthy sexuality addresses the concerns of incest victims very accurately. The presentation of the sequence of events in healing is very helpful to those not knowing what to expect or how to approach the pain an incest victim feels. I highly recommend this book for anyone that works with or is an incest victim. I also highly recommend Wendy Maltz's book--The Sexual Healing Journey. Cherie Swaters

The story takes me back to a simpler time.
I LOVE READING THIS BOOK. I ordered this book several years ago from the Coors Foundation for Family Literacy for my son. I get a warm feeling everytime I read this story. Stephen Cosgrove weaves a tale wear the characters seem real. The fact that the characters are animals adds to the charm of the book. Wendy Edleson's illustrations are beautiful and vibrant even after all these years. This book is well worth having in your library.

Best Children's book I've ever read. My kids love it!
My family received a copy of this book at Pizza Hut by the Coors Foundation for family Literacy. It instantly became my favorite book. The kids love it. We received it several years ago and since then I have read it to my children's classrooms at least once a year. All the kids at school know what I'm going to read when I get there and the still love it. I am in the process of trying to locate the rest of the series that is listed on the back cover. I know they will be wonderful. (and check out the wonderful artwork in the book!). I'm presently working on my Teaching degree (another year!) and I plan on this book being well known in my classroom even though I will be teaching in secondary. It's great for all ages

Tell Me A Story.....
"In the evening the Sun touches the ocean in the west and climbs down the long ladder to the underworld. Then he sets out on his underground journey to the sunrise place in the east. Up above, now that the world is dark, the time has come for people to light fires and tell stories." Join John Bierhorst at the crackling campfire as he retells seven Pueblo fireside tales. These are stories that just beg to be read aloud. Each short and engaging tale centers around the theme of friendship, and is rich in Native American insight, wisdom, and humor. Wendy Watson's charming and expressive cartoon-like artwork, in quiet, subdued desert earth-tones, complement each story beautifully, and bring the endearing cast of animal characters to life. Find out why Coyote has short ears, how Snake lost his only friend, why peaches are sweet, and how Bee learned to fly... Perfect for youngsters 5-10, Is My Friend At Home? is a marvelous collection the entire family can read and share together. "The Sun has come to the end of his underground journey. As he climbs up the ladder to the sunrise place, he puts on the skin of a gray fox, and white dawn comes up. "Ha!" he cries and he puts on the skin of a yellow fox, and yellow dawn comes up. He steps out of the underworld. It becomes morning. No more storytelling until nightfall."

Beautiful language
We got this book out of the library and ended up buying a copy as the tales are worth many repeat visits. The stores about different kinds of friendship are charming but what really catches our attention is the language. It is clear for young children to understand but is ever so slightly different -- as if spoken by someone translating into English or someone using a different 'flavor' of English. It really adds to the sense that these are Native American tales.

The illustrations are detailed and very attractive with lots of things for listner to explore while letting the words soak in.

Beautiful book
This is a lovely book with amazing depth. My three year old daughter finds something new in the illustrations on every reading, as do I. The book will grow with her as many of the illustrations make sense to a three year old in one way and an older child in another way.

Beautiful!
This is a book you and/or your children could spend hours pouring over. The intricate, detailed pictures show each of the descriptions of love. On the left page, there will be a picture of, for example, a person being resentful. On the opposite page, the same person in the same situation is acting in love. An outstanding reminder to all of us!!!

Not your typical Romance
Back Cover:

"She'd learned to live in the shadows...until love brought her heart out of hiding.

There was a time when bubbly Olivia Halloran was the ultimate carefree California girl--happily married to a charming, wealthy businessman. But that was before her husband's violent treachery forced Olivia to take her young son and flee in the middle of the night. Now, living under an assumed name in a small town far from the bright lights of L.A., the last thing Olivia needs is to call attention to herself--or to get involved with anyone again. So when she rescues two young children from drowning, she suddenly finds herself in the media spotlight. For the spirited twins turn out to belong to the mysterious Max Rothwell, a brooding, reclusive man Olivia finds herself irresistibly attracted to.

Haunted by his own secrets and the tragic death of his wife, Max wants nothing to do with romance. Though he's drawn to Olivia's quiet strength and compassionate nature, something tells him she's not who she appears to be. What begins as a reluctant truce soon grows into a sensual longing, bringing two wounded souls together in a tender passion that may heal them both if they can learn to trust in their hearts..."

This is my first book by Wendy Morgan and with a 5 star rating will not be the last. I thought the characters and storyline were freshly written, although the storyline has been used many times. This is not a rehash of last decade's run of the mill story. The 'twists' to the story were realistic! Wow, finally a writer that writes about things going wrong and knowing we the reader will still get our 'retreat from reality fix'. I applaude Ms. Morgan on her courage, even though we know it will turn out alright. Hey, this is still category romance. :) Ms. Morgan also writes under another name. That information can be found when you purchase this book.

An enjoyable blend of romance and suspense.
I am a male reader who does not usually enjoy romance novels. LOVING MAX is a definite exception. Having read and enjoyed the books Wendy Morgan writes as Wendy Corsi Staub, I decided to give this one a chance.

The characters are well-developed and believable---so real that you will feel as if you know them. Combine the interesting characters with a fast-paced plot and you have a true page turner!

Ms.Morgan tells her story from both Olivia's and Max's perspectives, which heightened my interest. And the three children are adorable, the way real children are. These are not "TV sitcom" kids.

I look forward to reading more books from Wendy Morgan. Be sure to read Wendy Corsi Staub's many books, which include her latest suspense thrillers, FADE TO BLACK and ALL THE WAY HOME.

Ludwig Van Beethoven (Composer's World)

Beethoven's life and music in the context of his world
One of the inherent problems with juvenile biographies of famous composers like Ludwig van Beethoven is that you only get to read about great music, you do not get to listen to it unless you happen to have a CD handy of the composer's greatest hits (although I am sure there are some books out there that come with their own CD that is cued to the text, which, it goes without saying, is a great idea). Wendy Thompson finds a way of dealing with this problem by including extracts from some of Beethoven's most famous works--the Third, Fifth, and Ninth symphonies, the "Emperor" piano concerto, and the "Moonlight" sonata--in simple keyboard arrangements. Of course, you need to have a piano nearby instead of a CD player, but you still have to appreciate the effort.

Thompson not only tells the biographical details of Beethoven's life, but she puts his music in historical context as well, presenting it as reflecting the Age of Revolution with its violence, passion, struggle, and upheaval, as well as the quest for personal and spiritual fulfillment, of those times. This explains why the inside front cover has a map of the Napoleonic Wars. The book is also illustrated with lots of historic etching and paintings. But the more important part is that Thompson takes pains to talk about the uniqueness and importance of Beethoven's key musical pieces. This is important to me because beyond the biographical details of where he lived, and what he wrote, and who he ticked off, I am most interested in being able to better appreciation Beethoven's music. Therefore I like an above average dose of music appreciation in such books. This Thompson provides, all within the context of Beethoven's world. This book is for students age 12 and up and is certainly one of the more analytical juvenile biographies of Beethoven out there.

Unmistakably Exciting!
If you've read any other Cooper Ellis books, you'll be familiar with Wendy Lee Nentwig's incredible talent for writing. Cooper and her friends Alex and Claire are back, along with Josh, Cooper's boyfriend hopeful. While Josh seems, at times, genuinely interested in Cooper, why does he appear to continually be hiding something from Cooper and mysteriously running off somewhere else? And then there's the pretty little redhead Reagan Josh keeps showing up with, even though he's just asked Cooper to the spring dance. At the same time, Cooper's modelling career is flourishing, with getting a job with a hot new photographer. But though his work is very professional, Cooper's just not comfortable around him. Meanwhile, between Cooper's modelling and her struggle to define her relationship with Josh, her friendships with Alex and Claire seem to quickly be drifting away. In this funny episode with Cooper, you'll experience a lot of laughs and a few times of seriousness and contemplation. It's easy to get into this book and hard to put down! Believe me, it doesn't take long before you feel like you're right there. If you liked Cooper before, you'll love her now. Check out Moonstruck in Manhattan!
