Truly Wonderful Book!
This book quickly became a favorite in our house, my four girls love to have it read over and over, and they love to read it themselves and look at the pictures. They story is so sweet, and the illustrations are beautiful. I recommend this book for everyone, but especially for adults who have had that one special doll in their past, and for children who have that special doll now.

A modern day Velveteen Rabbit!
A truly touching story, brought to life with delightful illustrations from Wendy Anderson Halperin, about the special bond between a child and a treasured toy. As a collector of children's books, this one is a winner and will be treasured for years to come.

The simple pleasures of loving a doll
My seven year old and I sat down to read this book. It brought back memories of the little dolls that I had loved. The wear and tear on the little doll did not matter to Sophie. No matter what happen to Rose, Sophie loved her. The illustrations were wonderful. My little girl loved to follow the boxes around the edge. Everytime we read it, she discovers something new. I bought this book for her to keep and share with her children someday.

Kallmes edits showstopper
Paul Kallmes compiled and edited a stunning collected of photogaphs and essays concerning the work of Vittorio Sella. He is to be commended for bringing this collection of Sella's photographs to the attention of North American readers. Mr. Kallmes is a visionary. Bravo and thank you Paul!

Sublime Peak Experiences
Vittorio Sella is little-known today, but knowledgeable people like Ansel Adams consider him one of the greatest mountain photographers ever. Sella did his work at a time when cameras weighed 40 pounds, glass negatives two pounds apiece, and mountain climbing was much more primitive than today, without the warmest clothes, tough equipment and bottles of oxygen. Sella is also known for being the first person to scale the Matterhorn in winter.

Sella was the son of the first Italian to write about photography and his uncle was a famous leader of Italian mountaineering. Expedition photographs were a new idea in his day, and primarily served the purpose of map-making for subsequent expeditions. Sella's work also served that purpose, but transcended it with stunning minimalist views. As Ansel Adams points out in his preface, Sella also understood the technique of mountain photography in ways that are missed by many current photographers.

His work was of such stature that he was invited along on important expeditions by the Duke of Abruzzi, which allowed him to be the first to create images of many important scenes. These expeditions included his native Alps, Alaska, Uganda, the Caucasus range, and the Himalayas. His photograph of K2 in the Himalayas is considered the finest one ever.

As dazzling as these images are, the essays in the book greatly add to them by explaining the context of their creation, the photographic problems involved, and the artistic aspects of the work. I enjoyed reading each of them, because each shed a different light on the work.

Although the book is about summit photographs, the book includes many photographs during the ascents, of the people met during the expeditions, and of local scenery.

The summit photos are remarkable to me in many ways. First, he made great efforts to get the right perspective -- often climbing another mountain to get a view the the one alongside. Second, he created stunning panoramas of the major chains which exceed what the eye can see, even if you were there. Third, the pictures have a sense of motion in the glaciers that is quite remarkable. These rivers of ice look like they are moving in videos when you look at them. Fourth, the mountain views have a spiritual quality that is uplifting. Your view of mountains will be forever changed by these photographs.

Also, I feel grateful for the photographs because, although I love mountains, I am not a mountain climber and would never have a chance to see these beautiful, inspiring scenes otherwise.

I encourage you to read and enjoy this book as example of what goals can provide. In the days when Sella was climbing there was no chance of reaching the top of many of these peaks, such as K2 (thought by many to be the toughest mountain in the world to climb). Yet the climbers and Sella achieved lasting meaning for themselves and for us in their partially successful endeavors. Goals take us to the top of our skills by extending our ambition and focus. Be sure you are always looking for the next mountain to climb (and photograph). Let these wonderful images inspire you on to your personal greatness! Also, think about choosing goals that will aid and inspire others for many years in the future as Sella did.

Captures the spirituality of the mountains
Vittorio Sella photographed primarily in the late 19th and early 20th century and chronicled many important expeditions. In this book, the authors present an wonderful array of his work, and the photographic reproductions are remarkably loyal to the originals in coloration. Admirers of Ansel Adams will love this book and will clearly see the antecedents of his style.

I'm an ice skater and I am really inspired by the book.
I ice skate too. I have been ice skating since I was 8 or 9 years old, and believe me I know what it feels like to be at the rink 4 days a week!! This book has really inspired me to keep up my goals for ice skating.

Great book! About 2 of the best skaters ever!
I am a normal 12 year old girl,so I think that this is a great book that shows what the the life of a young famous skater is really like.

Shows rewards when one overcomes challenges.
If you ever think about giving up before you achieve your goal, then you should read this because this book shows value of keeping at it, despite many hardships and difficulties one encounters. Both of these young girls can be real inspirations for others, and not necessarily girls. Do read this book!

Great for classroom use!
This book is wonderful to use in the classroom with a variety of ages and academic levels! The exciting and FUN use of words and word rhythm is very helpful when teaching writing lessons. Reading this story is also a wonderful introductory activity for discussions on our society, our dreams and wishes for the future, and how to "fix" the problems we might see in the world! Superb example of children's literature!

Wendy wows with culinary tale for kids
Actually, I haven't read it yet. But I know it's got to be great because I grew up with Wendy in Ohio - we were in the same art classroom in high school. I've got to buy it!

A delightful tale about a baker who tries to make a world.
This engaging, magical book presents the story of an ambitious doughnut maker. Frustrated and bored, he decides to whip up a world. He begins by carefully studying everything from androids to sunshine, and then concocts a batter that includes ketchup, old socks, and other quirky ingredients. The baker struggles with many different variations of batter, and he stirs and cooks in countless creative, silly ways . . . until a final product emerges that will surprise and charm every reader.

"The Ambitious Baker's Batter" is suitable for children and adults of all ages. Like the best children's books, it is sophisticated enough to succeed on many different levels. The illustrations are detailed, imaginative, and entertaining. Most pages feature both primary and background art. Children (and their parents, too!) will enjoy discovering hidden treasures in these background drawings. Also, the book's illustrations are so evocative that children who can't yet read will be able to follow the story independently.

"The Ambitious Baker's Batter" is an ideal gift for the holidays, a time when children are fascinated by the mysteries and magic of baking.

Wonderfully wierd
This type of stuff is right up my alley, personally. And it is one of the rare art books in which the text is as fascinating as the artwork itself. What a wierd and original story . This creative team have invented their own type of erotic circus and its amazing underground exisitence that leads you into a haunting and intriguing world. It is fiction but it s not so far fetched that you don't have fun imagining, "What if?"
If you like circus life, the book Geek Love and the darker side of human behavior, you will find this book just astonishing.

Erotic women & exotic animals
Wealthy eccentric Alphonse Zukor produced an illegal underground cabaret mixing erotic women with exotic animals in the late 1800s: David Delamare's Animerotics recreates the cabaret's alluring show cards, using sepia tone paintings to capture these erotic fantasy images. Delamare's art is deftly portrayed in these oversized, full-page photos.

A visually stunning and uniquely rendered tale.
Animerotics, by David Delamare and Wendy Ice, dwells in that rare nexus between history and imagination. Richly illustrated with sepia-toned color plates by Delamare, we are given a glimpse into the world of the highly eccentric and instantly endearing Alphonse Zukor, underground vaudevillian and seeker of curious pleasures.

Set in Edwardian Europe, Zukor's dream is to produce a cabaret act that combines his passions for exotic animals, burlesque women and the alphabet. The product of a misunderstood visionary, his quest finds trouble wherever it lands, while historic and literary figures from George Bernard Shaw to the Marquess of Queensbury become entangled in the dragnet. Animerotics seamlessly blends the real with the fantastic in a story powerfully told in words and masterfully brought to life in paintings.

I had many sleepless nights because of Marte Cohen
Marte Cohen, all 4 foot, 11 inches of her, a modest unassuming lady, is a member of my Temple, so I had heard snippets of her story before, which few people (even her children) may have known about. However, I had no idea of the incredible drama involved until my wife purchased a copy of Marte's recently published book. Since I do a lot of my leisure reading upon retiring, I never realized what sleepless nights I would have, inasmuch as I could not put the book down except when I might finally fall asleep from fatigue in the wee hours of the morning. Not only is it a wonderful story of the bravery of a self-described "average" (hardly), young, French woman who voluntarily experienced life-threatening situations during a period of incredible evil, it provides great insight into what everyday life must have been like in pre- and post-war France. This book was especially uplifting, even for an old cynic such as me.

IT'S ALL IN TIMEING....OF OUR LIVES
If you like adventure, heartache, love affairs (not what you may think)and luck, you must read this book. This lady was in her late teens and early twenties during WW II. As her family is Jewish, they lived through all kinds of hell, however, the resourcefulness of the author along with many regular citizens of her area, this immediate family was able to live through the ordeal (excepting two people) and Ms. Cohn has written a fine book of the times and what she accomplished. What a fine human being Marthe Cohn is.

Scarey, but uplifting story
Hard to believe that this really happened to a young woman during one of the most terrifying times in history. Somber at times, but also eventually full of hope.

Kids Favorite
I originally bought this book for my son when he was 2. It was his favorite for many years. It has been passed down and now my youngest daughter has me read it to her every night. After 6 years it is finally starting to fall apart. I would love to replace it as I can see it will get much more use, before it is finally retired from our family. No other book has gotten this much attention from all of my children!

Christmas Cookies
When my twins were two they wanted to read this book every night for almost a year! It is a very cute book. My boys are now four and we just got this book out for Christmas again. I wish it was in print - our copies have fallen apart from reading them so much!!

Adorable little book
Lewison's writing is very sweet and endearing. This is one of my favorite books for my child.

My Best Friend
This book was my best friend while I was planning my traditional Jewish wedding and alleviated a lot of the stress. It is extremely detailed, so to prevent being overwhelmed I recommend that you sit down with your partner first and go through the book with a red pen and eliminate all of the details that you do not want to include in your wedding. It is the best engagement gift I could have bought for myself!

Practical, Organized, and Detailed
Plenty of lists for every detail with enough room to write all the information. It was very helpful throughout the planning process. I recommend it to anyone who is planning a wedding! I'm going to tell all of my friends.

Jewish Wedding Workbook
This book is amazing! It has worksheets and tables, all of which anyone who is getting married will need.

Trouble In Paradise
Alexander Danilov returns to his ancestral home in Georgia after 40+ years abroad to be spend time with his several-times-removed grandaughter before she dies of old age and to reclaim the family home. This was a wonderful vampire book with a touch of romance. The violence is graphic in some spots, but well worth reading. Cant' wait to read the next installment - These Fallen Angels.

A passonate look into the trials of eternal death.
Alexi Danilov, founder of the Danilov clan comes back to his domain only once in a generation. Like always the Danilovs are fighting each and themselves, but Alex wouldn't have it any other way. Unknown to him is the fact that he is being by a stalked an old enermy that is thought to be dead. This in fact is true. He like Alex is a vampire. This is to be his hardest challenge ever.

LIKE VC ANDREWS? ANNE RICE?
This is one of the best books i have ever read involving modern vampires, anne rice aside. This is a novel that goes for the thorat and doesn't let go. It is simialr to vc andrews with the step back art. Similar too, is the characters. I liked the bad girl where in this novel, you get two. It has a VERY good plot and story line. I look forward to the next one in the series. I think this author should replace the ghostwriter of vc andrews. she's that good.
