A well-written book
Miriam is a Bible character who has always appealed to me. I've always wondered what happened in her life between watching the Egyptian princess discover baby Moses' basket and helping the adult Moses lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Beatrice Gormely has attempted to fill in some of these gaps in the Biblical story with an imaginative but believable story. This story, which is told not only from Miriam's point of view, but also from the point of view of the lady-in-waiting of the Egyptian princess, is overflowing with descriptions of both Hebrew and Egyptian beliefs and customs. The characterization of both characters is superb. Miriam is an intelligent, and resourceful young lady who learns quite a bit about herself throughout the course of the book. Lady Nebet, the lady-in-waiting of princess Bint-Anath, is a crafty and scheming woman, who despite her initial dislike for Hebrews, begins to really like Miriam. Just when the two characters are becoming close, unforseeable events threaten to disrupt the peaceful life Miriam has grown used to in the palace. In the chaos that follows, Miriam has to make a tough choice. Will she stay at the palace, learn from Lady Nebet, and watch over her baby brother Moses, or will she turn her back on the easy life at the palace and return to her family? I will not spoil the book, but I will reccommend it to anyone young or old who enjoys historical fiction or Biblical fiction. This well-written book brings the past to life.

Absolutely Amazing!
This is an amazing book! I enjoyed it so very much. You are really drawn into the book and can easily relate to Miriam's thoughts. Lady Nebet is also very interesting. It was also very interesting to learn about the Egyptian and Hebrew culture, during that time period. Miriam is really amazing and makes some hard decisions. It is a fun story to read, especially if you are familiar with the story of Moses, for Miriam is his sister. I would definetly reccomend this captivating novel for anyone!

An important gathering of poetic voices
"Miriam's Daughters: Jewish Latin American Women Poets," edited by Marjorie Agosin, is an impressive anthology. This book is a bilingual edition; the Spanish or Portuguese originals and their English translations are on facing pages. Twenty-nine poets from all over Latin America are represented here. Among the authors included are Jacqueline Goldberg (Venezuela), Sarina Helfgott (Peru), Alicia Kozameh (Argentina), Teresa Porzecanski (Uruguay), Leonor Scliar-Cabral (Brazil), and Ana Maria Shua (Argentina).

Editor Agosin contributes a fascinating forward (in English) in which she reflects on the "Babel of whispers, songs, prayers, and languages" she encountered growing up in Chile. Some of the subjects explored by the poets in this book include family ties, multi- and bilingualism, Jewish ritual, and the legacy of the Holocaust. Figures from Jewish history, myth, and legend often appear: Anne Frank, Ruth, Lilith, the Golem.

There are many fine poems in this anthology, but my favorites are the following: Schlomit Baytelman's "My Name is Schlomit," Diana Anhalt's historically allusive "That Jewish Crusader," Rosita Kalina's Whitmanesque "I Am of the Tribe of Yehuda," and Angelina Muniz Huberman's mystical "The Cabalists." This book is a wonderful resource for those interested in multiculturalism, Jewish studies, Latin American literature, or contemporary poetry.

Water from a deep well
Agosin has done it again---provided an insider's tour of Jewish Latin America through the eyes of the poets. Here is poetry that is lively, poetically accomplished, and in a much needed bilingual format. What a treasure! Strongly recommended.

An Essential Book for moms AND dads!
This is my favorite Dr. Miriam Stoppard book because it is wonderfully organized and has plenty of great photographs and colorful blocks of information. The charts on everything from "What diagnostic tests are," to "What to look out for as your child develops," make this book the most practical book I have seen.

If I had to buy one book for a new parent, this would be it. I love all of Dr. Stoppard's books, but this one is truly a book for mom and dad. This is also a book that focuses on the needs of the parents as well as the needs of the baby. The first-time parents concerns are examined and Dr. Miriam deals with every aspect from preparing for pregnancy to bonding with the baby as a family. The father's role in the childcare is also discussed in more detail. This takes a look at how parenthood will change your life and it offers constructive help on keeping your relationship alive.

This book includes information on the needs of working women, house husbands and single parents. You will learn how to be a caregiver, supporter and teacher, as well as a loving partner. What I love most about this book is that it focuses on the "decision to become a parent." This is much more than just deciding to have a baby. This is about bringing a child into the world and about creating an entire new person.

The process of pregnancy is also fascinating. You will want to check this section throughout your pregnancy. Issues during pregnancy are discussed in great detail. On many of the pages you will also find a block that gives information about how fathers can take an active role.

There is a section on "Sex and Parenthood" which gives some sage advice if you don't want to immediately become pregnant again. A section is devoted to PPD (Postpartum Depression) and explains why this happens and how to deal with it. The best part of this book is the large charts which show the development of your new child. It focuses in on "mind, mobility, coordination, social skills and speech." In this way, you can keep track of how your child is developing and the beauty of these charts is that there is a whole section on "How You Can Help."

This book shows you what it is really like to have a baby! Highly recommended if your goal is to enjoy life and have the knowledge you need to enjoy life as a family.

This is the book I have been looking for!
I had been looking for a book that will help in showing me all aspects of being a new parent. This book covered it all and then some. I am planning to have children in the next few years and this book has helped with all of my questions. I think the veiwpoints for the fathers makes this a book even the fathers will be excited to read. I have already read it many times and I keep it close by so I may just thumb through it. I just lent it to a friend and I am already missing it.

Our Sweat, Our Fight
Published in Hardcover by South End Press (July, 2001)
Author: Miriam Ching Yoon Louie
Amazon base price: $40.00

A more sinister side of globalization
Miriam Ching Yoon Louie has a literary talent in exposing the ill effects of globalization on poor women of color in the American garment industry. Focusing on Chinese, Korean, and Mexican immigrants she documents how their labor is continuously being exploited without regard to their personal well-being. Transnational corporations seek their labor because it is cheap. It is these women who are the backbones of the forces of globalization and their stories need to be told. An added strength of this book is that the author doesn't just focus on the negative structural aspects but she also includes multiple instances of how these workers create social solidarity and fight for social change in their favor, even when up against the odds. Her personal involvement in these social movements is an added benefit. These poor women of color both produce and reproduce globalization on the local and global scale. It leaves one with the belief that there is hope after all for a fair and just world. This book will make you reevaluate the 'promises' of free trade agreements and economic growth. As one group prospers there is surely another group being disadvantaged. Overall, this book is accessible especially in discussions on the feminization of labor and migration that is not cluttered with jargon. Go ahead and take a gamble. I hope that it will alter your social stance on these important issues as it reinforced mine.

In My Personal Top Ten
During my vacation, I've been reading "Sweatshop Warriors: Immigrant Women Workers Take on the Global Factory" by Miriam Ching Yoon Louie. Miriam has a multi-decade organizing history with low income women of color. She is the co-founder of the Women of Color Resource Center in Berkeley, and author of an amazing trainers' manual called WEdGE" Women's Education in the Global Economy."

"Sweatshop Warriors" is one of my personal top ten books on radical organizing. It looks at transnational sweatshops through the eyes of Korean, Chinese and Mexican women forced to leave their homes of origin to take super exploited labor jobs in the world's sweatshops, ending up in the garment rows of NY, Oakland, LA, El Paso, etc. And there they have stood and fought. Against incredible odds, they've led international campaigns against the sweatshops industries, formed multi-purpose women workers centers, dealt with men in their families who were sometimes less than supportive of their activism, and learned to be world traveling organizers.

The author mixes political economy, analysis, history, and the herstories of the women organizers she has interviewed. Race/class/gender/nationality -- all come into play in the lives and organizing work of these incredible women.

A book to warm the heart
This book shows the author's love of the land of Israel. Even with its difficulties, she shows that there is so much to learn from the country and so much to see. It is very spiritually uplifting. I have had the pleasure of seeing the land through the writer's eyes and would recommend anyone who wanted a unique experience that includes a full appreciation of the land to contact Miriam Feinberg to be your quide. If that is not possible, read the book and dream!

Refreshing, profoundly deep, inspiring a new love for Israel
This book combines a deep knowledge of the Scriptures plus a touching love for the Land of Israel. Many who read it will want to see the Land the author is so inspired to write about and may even have the opportunity to meet her (licensed guide as well as a master of words), as she is a most reliable source of information for the tourist. Ask for her to lead your group through Sar El Tours, Jerusalem!

Call It Courage
"Rape, Incest, Battery" by Miriam Kalman Harris is a book of enormous
compelling force, and its contents make for riveting reading. The
stories Dr. Harris has compiled and edited -- as well as her own
introductory materials -- pack a wallop as well as open up a view into a
world of domestic trauma and violence against women that many of us know
only second-hand. But the personal accounts she's assembled, the poems,
letters, etc., really bring us into that world very directly, and I'm
sure many of those stories have not only helped those who wrote them but
will help and inspire those who read them, particularly women, of course.
This is a very important book demonstrating the courage that women can
discover in themselves when confronting vicious forms of mistreatment and
the heroic actions that they can take, not just in their own defense, but
in creating new lives for themselves and their families. Everyone with
an interest in this subject -- and not just women -- should read this
eye-opener of a book.

Full time Dad praises Lukken's book
As a recently divorced man with full time custody of three preschoolers, I was desparate for information about making sure my kids would succeed in school. A friend at work suggested this book and it has been a great help to me. Basically, I learned to trust my instincts, and just knowing where to look for answers was a great relief. The author did a good job of covering all the bases. (This is a good book to have on the shelf for reference of the stages of childhood, what's normal, what's not.)

Perfect book for getting my child ready for K
I'm a new mother with a law degree. Needless to say, I don't know much about early childhood development. I was concerned about what was "normal" for pre-school children and what was expected of them before they entered the classroom. This book was amazing! It covered every possible question I could have thought of, as well as a few handy tips for discipline. I find myself refering to it constantly, and feel much more confident about my child's readiness and social skills. This book is a MUST for anyone with pre-school children.

Citizenship made real
This is a fascinating book about citizenship and immigration. Given the growing importance of this area, I found this book to be quite useful. I do a fair amount of work in Washington, D.C. on immigrants and benefits, but I didn't know much about the area from a theory perspective. This book was great for that.

History comes alive
I've never thought much of academic political histories. I depend on similiar books as a remedy to my sleeping disorder. But Ms Feldblum's book has turned my head. This is one fabulous read. Since reading "Reconstructing" I've been able to enchant my co-workers with tales of French immigration. Highly recommended.

Zany drawings and a rollicking story line
A tiny insect craws into a classroom and soon the whole class is scratching. It's hard to imagine how a picturebook on head lice can be whimsical and fun, but even parents who have suffered through an outbreak will find the zany drawings and rollicking story line to be fun.

Uh-Oh, Itchy Head.....
"One day a tiny insect, no bigger than a freckle, crawled into Ms. Calypso's classroom. Nobody noticed..." She took a look around, saw Ms Calypso's "cascading curls," dove through the air, and landed, making a nice little home for herself and her tiny eggs. Pretty soon Ms Calypso began to scritch scratch, and soon her entire class was scritching and scratching as the head-lice scampered from head to head to head. Mr Trout, the principal, sent a note home: "Please comb special conditioner through your children's hair and make it so slippery that all the head lice slide into the bath water and float away." The treatment worked perfectly. "There was not a single louse in sight. They were all gone. Well, all except one!" Poor Ms Calypso lived alone, and had no one to help her condition and comb, and soon, the whole class was scritching and scratching all over again. This time Mr Trout sent the note home, and then volunteered to help Ms Calypso with her hair. They fell in love and got married, and there hasn't been a scritch or a scratch ever since...well at least not in Mrs Trout's room..... It's hard to believe that anyone could author an appealing story about head-lice infestation, but Miriam Moss and illustrator, Delphine Durand seem to have accomplished the impossible. Ms Moss' engaging and entertaining text takes the mystery and stigma out of the head-lice issue, as she shows that anyone can be a victim. Ms Durand's bold, bright, and busy cartoon-like illustrations enhance the story, and are filled will expression, vibrant color, playful humor and eye-catching detail. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Scritch Scratch is a clever, funny romp that takes a lousy topic and makes light of it with fact instead of fiction.
