Beautiful book on a soulful and inventive artist
Miriam Schapiro, now in her seventies, has been making art since childhood. She grew up in New York City, the daughter of an artist father, a powerful intellectual who became her mentor, and a mother who was a dreamer, a bookworm, and a fabulous housekeeper. (Years later, the home arts reappear in some of Schapiro's ground-breaking feminist installations.) Striving to be an artist in a critically harsh and often socially difficult male-dominated art world (anecdotes abound), Schapiro created paintings, lithographs, and paper, paint, and fabric collages, and later, original and amazing installations and collaborative works. She was a teacher, too, and provided inspiration and community-building skills to countless students and women artists. Her awareness of women's lives informed much of her later work, and her observations are insightful and powerful. This book is generously illustrated, and provides a detailed biography as well as a picture of the various art scenes of this country, midcentury and beyond. Schapiro's recollections and journal entries, along with the author's careful and extensive research, form the source material. First-rate book on a terrific artist.

An excellent cookbook!
Carrie Bender, an Amish housewife, is such an excellent writer of fiction. So, I decided to try her cookbook. Every recipe that I've tried so far has been excellent! Our favorites include the meat loaf and sugar cookie recipes. In fact, I have shared a few of her recipes with friends.

Sprinkled throughout her cookbook are nicely done sketches and excerpts of her books.

A nice feature of the book itself is the spirial binding, which allows it to lay flat on the counter.

"Miriam": a short story with a long-standing message
Truman Capote is perhaps most well-known for his novel, In Cold Blood, and his novella, Breakfast at Tiffany's. While these two works are excellent, his short stories, though not as famous, should not be overlooked. "Miriam," for example, is only about ten pages long, yet it is such a compelling story that I found myself thinking about days after I had read it. It tells the story of Mrs. Miller, a widowed woman who is completely isolated from everyone except herself. She lives a standard life that rarely deviates from her usual chores and occasional treat of going to see a movie. One time when she goes to the movie theater, alone as usual, she sees a striking girl ahead of her in line. This girl, who is dressed primly and who has almost white hair, approaches her. She introduces herself as Miriam. It turns out Mrs. Miller's first name is also Miriam. The young Miriam asks Mrs. Miller to buy her a ticket to the movies, as she has never been before. When Mrs. Miller asks where Miriam's mother is, Miriam evades the question. This is the first introduction Mrs. Miller has to the character who eventually consumes her thoughts and interrupts her lonely life. Miriam comes to Mrs. Miller's house a few days later, late at night. Mrs. Miller is frightened and confused when she hears the doorbell ring; naturally, she is not expecting anyone. Miriam tells Mrs. Miller she is hungry and asks for cake and candied cherries. Appalled by Miriam's gall, and suspicious as to how Miriam knew where she lived, Mrs. Miller begs her to leave and wishes for her to not come again. The next day, however, seemingly inexplicably, Mrs. Miller finds herself buying the cake and cherries Miriam had wanted. For the first time in a long while, Mrs. Miller feels happy, though she is not quite sure why. Miriam once again comes to visit Mrs. Miller. She is pleased yet not surprised to see that Mrs. Miller bought the foods she requested. As the story progresses, Mrs. Miller confronts Miriam and herself. "Miriam" is a true classic and is consistent with Capote's admirable ability to write. I highly recommend it.

Amazingly close to the current impeaschment situation!!
This is a blow by blow story of impeachment and also a story of a woman that took her husbands place as Govenor after he was impeached.

In this book Texas's first woman Govenor Ma Fergison at last gets her due.

Ma Fergison was a house hold word in Texas during the twenties's and thirties's

There is no other book that tells the secrets about this much disputed and much malighed administration. The Legislation tried to impeach Ma, but she would not let then call the session.

This book captivated me and kept my attention it is so amazing that the impeachment of the Govenor had so many paralls to the impeachment of President Clinton.

Ma put her desk in the capitol next to the desk of her husband...Texas was refered to as having two Govenors for the price of one.

Ma okyed a horse racing track in Arlington Texas because her Husband Jim liked to play the ponies.

a soul-making passage from heartbreak to hope
This is an essential book for parents of special children, and those who love and want to help them, but it is also one of the most moving personal stories I have ever read. It's said that "What doesn't break you makes you stronger," and Miriam Edelson's soul-making bravery is on every page of this book. It gave me courage, ideas, and inspiration, and I would recommend it to anyone on a similar journey, or to readers who want to know if their best hopes for human beings (and compassionate societies) can be tested by reality and endure, even flourish.

Imagne for a second that you are sleeping in yuor house. Suddenly a squad of men come in and hold you at gun point. They kill all of your family members, strip you of all you close and leave you for embarssment in the middle of the street and before they leve they put a star tattoo on your head. They do this all because you are jewish.
In this book, you learn abotu the horrific events of the holocaust. Hitler had a plan called the final step in which the final goal was to wipe out all jewish people in Germany. Adolf had many ways of clereing out the jews. One was simply shooting them. Another burnig down they're house while they are inside of it. Another was a gas chamber. Last but most sickening , submiting them to sick, human experiametaion.
Tjis is a very good book but not for people who get disocrded easily.

great story, great illustrations
This is a great book for budding young naturalists or scientists. M's Schlein tells the story of Harry Johnston and his trip to Africa to discover the okapi. She captures the reader's attention with the information while also teaching about the scientific method of investigation.

Besides the description of how Mr Johnston came to discover the okapi, M's Schlein also includes a complete description of the okapi and the way the okapi lives in its natural habitat.

M's Sanderson is a major contributor to this book. Her wonderful drawings detail the whole story - how the pygmies assisted in locating the okapi, what the okapi look like and their habitat, and various genus and species.

The book and illustrations work together so perfectly it would be good for everybody to read this book. It would be especially good for children that have an interest in animals or have scientific bent their mind. The more artistically inclined child would definitely enjoy the drawings.

Get the book and find out about this strange new animal.
