very philosophical and abstract
THis is a very difficult book to read, more for the professional designer and industrialist than for the lay reader curious about the company. I was astounded to learn that, behind the fabulous products this company creates, there is an entire philosophy: it references dadism and readymades, structuralism, and the Winnicott version of psychoanalysis (the company consciously seeks to creat "transition objects" that have deep emotional meanings for the consumers who like them)and that represents just a few of the influence. Much of that is very abstruce and admittedly over my head - I was reading the book in preparation for a writing project I am embarking upon on the company.

That being said, the images are fantastic and you get to know a lot about the company and the incredible family that founded and still manages it. It just isn't easy to read. Thus, I would recommend this book for those who want to know very deeply about this unique company, which is probably the best design firm for household goods in Europe if not the world. The book served my purposes as a professional, but I would never have gotten through it just for fun.

Good review of old instruments, such as brady bonds
This book is a good history of what has happened in emerging markets financing until 1995. It deals in depth with the Brady bonds and their origins and valuation. It also gives an introduction to the methodology that was subsequently used in the Brady bond retirements. From this perspective, it is very useful.

However, there is very little in the sense of a concrete future of the financial environment around the world. It precedes the 1997 and 1998 crises, which makes the warnings in the book interesting if not useful. I wish the authors would update it to include more recent developments, which would make it much more readable and interesting. As it is, it is more history than finance.

Probability and Random Processes for Electrical Engineering

Used in Graduate Class on Probability and Random Processes
I used this book for a graduate class in Probaility and Random Processes and we covered every chapter. I gave the book three stars based on other probability books I have used, but compared to other engineering books I would rate it lower.

I feel main problem with the book is the examples not very helpful in solving the 100+ problems that accompany each chapter. Most of the examples were just useless explanations graphs. The book also seems to gloss over some of the important concepts needed to solve the homework problems. The only homework problems that I found useful were the MATLAB examples. I would recommend doing these problems even if they are not assigned.

The book also does a poor job covering applications, especially in the later chapters on random processes. I would have been interested in more signal processing and communications applications, the main reason I took a course on probability and random processes.

As far a background for a person using this book, I would recommend the person be graduate student with a solid math background.

Useful, non-rigorous reference
I used this book in a sophomore-level probability course for electrical engineers and I found the book a bit confusing at the time. The notation is somewhat awkward and examples are interleaved throughout general concepts, making it difficult to discern key ideas.

During my doctoral studies, I gained a different perspective. I consistently found the book to be a valuable starting point for many concepts and I now find the examples a quick way to brush up on elementary principles.

However, Leon-Garcia doesn't give a thorough approach to probability theory (there are essentially no theorems) and avoids set theory almost entirely. To really put my teeth into something, I would have to track down a more advanced text for any particular concept I was interested in. Basically, Leon-Garcia tries to seperate "Probability and Random Processes" from rigorous mathematics.... something similar to eating fat-free cheesecake.

so so book
I used this textbook for a junior level class. Frankly, although the book is good initially, the end of chapter problems are way too hard, especially in chapters 3,4,6 and 7. Also, much of the book is formula, which is a bit too much for undergrads.

Poor choice!
This is a poor choice for any concievable use. I have found it to lack appropriate translations and gives no aid in specifics of pronunciation. It is very minimalist, and seldom useful. I am going to try the Webster's next.

stationed in italy
I am currently stationed in Italy and I am taking Italian lessons through an Italian instructor. She advised me not to get this book because it has alot of words that are misspelled. Other than that the book is okay. But when you are learning a new language it is important to be able to pronounce them correctly. One letter off could mean something different for example casa is house, cassa is case or box, and caso is chance.

Un Libro Favoloso
A fabulous italian dictionary that is extremely easy to use and is very helpful when looking for certain phrases or figures of speech! I took this book to Italy with me, and without it, I would have been utterly lost... wonderful book!

Is Alberto for Real?

How crazy do you have to be to believe this?
This is a rather miserable attempt to defend Alberto Rivera and his claims. The citing of discredited anti-catholic authors is the academic equivelant of citing Mein Kampf as a source claiming the inferiority of the Jewish people. The author damns Christianity Today for not giving every giving every case number and minute detail of Rivera's criminal record, but never make any demands of Rivera to a scantila of evidence for his claims (except of course, citing to long discredited anti-catholic authors of the past). Anything that doesn't correspond with Mr. Rivera's story is written off with paranoid conspiracy myths of the bag, bad, Roman Church. The facts still stand that Mr. Rivera has a criminal history as a con-man, probably doesn't even have a high school diploma, despite his claims of being a doctor of theology, and probably wasn't even a priest. It's a very sad state of affairs when people accept this as the best "defense" of such a reprehensible character.

A response to the truthfulness of Alberto Rivieras testimony
This book defends the position that the Catholic church is indeed involved in the types of things written about in the Alberto Comic series by Chick Publications. The conclusion is strongly supported that Alberto is indeed truthfully presenting his testimony, however, the reader may be left desiring to read more of the particulars of his experiences as a Jesuit priest. In which case, there are no more additional experiences that are not in the comic series.

Sexual braggadocio from a smart, conceited Italian
Alberto Bevilacqua is an accomplished novelist and, I now know, quite the man about town. This book is all about the women he's known, about how exquisitely sensitive he was and is to them; about men, his friends, and his life. It's full of bragging and posturing. He is pretty good at describing sexual acts, bodies, and female orgasm, but one of those orgasms -- fantastic, never-to-be-forgotten -- he believes he incited in one of the women he writes about was less impressive -- to this reader -- than he intended. (What if she was faking?) I liked his memories of his very young adolescence. This book was adored in Italy but I would guess that they saw right through it in France.

Not much meat to this book.
I was looking forward to receiving this book but was disappointed. It did not provide any more than a few visual cues on the artist's best known pieces. I had hoped for notes on his start, inspirations, and other less known pieces of artwork.

not much more than a train reading
this a very modest summary on brancusi's works. it's rather superficial and at times it's wasted on tangents of little value--such as the reference to brancusi's sexuality.

i gave it 2 stars mostly for the photo reproductions.
