The end of poetic architecture
From the very title Alberto Pérez-Goméz 's remarkable study refers to Edmond Husserl's phenomenolgy. Using Husserl and Heidegger's thought Pérez-Goméz analyses the crisis of the methaphorical role of architecture. The advent of Cartesianism is for him the starting point of a process that has, from that time, developed until our contemporary epoch. Scientific thinking has instrumentalized architectural thinking changing architecture into a merely purposeful activity. Architecture has; in this way; losen its role of metaphor of universal meaning and it has more and more become a pragmatic and non-representational culture. At the very beginning of this crisis the author places Claude Perrault's theories on architectural orders. They reveal quite clearly that orders have become only guidelines for design rather than portrayers of a divine, poetic reality as they were in the Classical tradition. Pérez-Goméz very profoundly analysises theories of architecture from that time until the end of 19th century, focusing on the central role played by Durand, the French theorist who more than any other stigmatized this trend. The book, firstly written as a doctoral thesis, focuses upon geometry and the changed use of it within architecture. To this regard very insightful are those parts where Guarino Guarini and Girard Desargues are dealt with. The book constitues one of the best reflections on the modern condition in architecture and it manages to suggest a path for a correct rethinking of architecture within modern culture.

though concise but thorough
I think this is one of the best introduction book to analysis and to multivariable calculus at the same time. it is more intesive than ross elementary analysis but less intensive than spivak and rudins. one reading this book will not need a multivariable calculus background to study this advance topic. though it is reserve for students who lack a some what mathematical maturity, it is still an excellent book, because it makes the students understand the subject.from there a student can advance further. the only problem with this book is that the problems are a bit routine. Guzman should have put nonclassic problems i.e. challenging problems.

Reflections, a thread, spanish and english
ok...if you are a T.S. Eliot fan or Naruda or Paz, then you will find Dawn of the Senses to be an interested reverberation from the latin world.
Personally I find the imagery and syntactical twist and turns to be very entertaining and beautiful. Give it a try.

A good book for Spanish learners
The plot is nice and not as childish as most beginners books. It uses very useful and day-to-day words, and a lot of useful phrases. Therefore this book is very useful for students learning Spanish who want to practice. Also contains comprehension exercise without answers. However, it is printed on low-level paper.

The fetish, & other stories
This is a splendid book. Short stories of Moravia are of totally different nature from most of the conventional short story writters like O'Henry or Gogol. Moravia deals with human relation - again not to the extent that it crosses the boundaries of relation and flows into the pshycological world of human feelings like Satre. He deals with the polemics of man and woman - mostly trying to manage through the grey background of their daily mandane matters. Little friction often is the source of firest fires destroying family or little frictions which die out after a small flash. What ever the case may be he dscribes it beautifully. Well translations have their own little problems but alas I never knew how to read Italian. All the stories have very small canvas and deal with few characters. Some stories are notable like "Insomnia Together" , "All Right" "Family Life". I have not given it full 5 stars as I feel the translations could have been better

The beatiful words and worlds of Alberto Manguel
Like all of Manguel's works, "Into the Looking Glass Wood" is an intelligent and fascinating journey through history, personal stories and literary reflection. In it, he explores the connections and consequences between the world and the words we use to describe it. As a self-confessed bibliophile, Manguel's intricate knowledge of books, words, symbolism, and emotion shines through and his friendly style makes the book utterly engrossing. "Into the Looking Glass Wood" is a wonderful book, an exploration into the art of writing and more broadly the art of being human. I cannot recommend it strongly enough to anyone with an interest in literature, history, language, or semiotics. Thank you, Alberto.

Witty, thoughtful insights
Manguel is best-known for his previous book of essays A HISTORY OF READING. Now, some people like that book and some people don't, and I suspect the lines of polarization will fall the same way on this book. Like A HISTORY, it's a collection of essays, but there is no unified theme to the pieces (other than the fact that Carroll's ALICE stories are used as epigrams for each section). Almost all literature-oriented, of course. I'm not generous with mediocre work, but this is not mediocre; merely rendered with a light touch. If you enjoy entertaining but thoughtful essays, you'll like this. However, if entertainment doesn't belong in the essay for you, you may be looking at the wrong book.
