True "Grit" for the Mills
I sneaked a read through this book before giving it as a present to a mutual musician-friend & JBrowne fan a few years ago when it was still in print: now I wish I'd kept it!

If it isn't already evident in his unfailingly honest, insightful and poetic lyrics and in his innate musicality, that this is a man who has been finely ground through "mills" of all sorts - a fast teenagehood, a grinding musical industry, single parenthood, loss of closeness, and personal tragedy that would take not just the wind out of anyone's sails, but the very fiber, then maybe you'll understand more by reading. This book gives you an idea of not HOW (that's his business) but THAT he keeps walking that tightrope and not just surviving but thriving. This book is a composite of comments by friends on Browne's family background & youth. Their understanding of things that happened to Browne sheds a little light on what we hear in the tones and colors of his work. It is said that you "know a man by his work." Browne has not been reserved in his generosity: he writes because he must, and he lets us in on it because he wants to.

One touchingly memorable thing I recall are the comments by friends on his marriage to his first wife, Phyllis - but one must tread very lightly here - so you read it.

Other things covered in the book are when and where Browne began taking his music to audiences, his early development as a musican, writer, and how he handled the industry with pluck. There are so many photographs that you simply won't see elsewhere - the house where Browne grew up, pictures of friends, early recording days. If you're fond of Browne, this book will be worth the out-of-print price, even if you just want to photo-browse.

Browne's friends are loyal and protective of him, and they seem to do him justice, conveying a picture of his clear and complex mind caught in the grip of a perennially strong, warm heart, and a human form no one could deny the beauty of - the very wellspring of a poet's art is this struggle to maintain a balance among these things and walk through life toward becoming one's self, no matter what happens. Giving up simply isn't in Browne's makeup. For those of us who aren't the poet that Browne is, this book will let you linger a little while in his world and inspire you to keep your own in better prespective. If the spirit of art is to educate the human in us, then Browne is certainly a true teacher. In that spirit, I wish you a good read and a good listening. I hope you'll take on his recent works which show where life is leading this man.

La iguana

A strange and tough story
This is the story of an extraordinarily ugly and repulsive man, who is rejected by everybody. He turns into an excellent whale-hunter but after some time, tired of being humiliated and mistreated because of his ugliness and clumsiness, he goes to a deserted island, to live there by himself. After some sailors burn and destroy his crops, he turns even more resented and violent. Subsequent sailors, who ocasionally stop in the island to get fresh water, are terribly treated by La Iguana, as he turns them into his slaves. Then, he captures a woman, who he keeps chained to a bed, as his "lover". Then, some of the sailors rebel against him, and his adventures continue (I won't spoil the end). Obviously, this is not a nice story, but it talks about the rejection of humans against those born with disabilities, especially those more repulsive, like extreme ugliness (deformity). The protagonist is a smart and strong-willed man, and not an evil one. But the violence he receives during his life turns him into an also violent and revengeful man. Kind of a "natural born" Frankenstein. The novel is well written and it's worth a reading.

Los Sorias

Author: Alberto Laiseca
Amazon base price: $70.00
Average review score:

gutsy readers
That's what it takes. In case you never heard of him, Alberto Laiseca is one of Argentine finest writers, but you may prefer to begin to know him with another title (I suggest 'La hija de Keops', or 'Keops' daughter'). Los soria is really a big book, the size of a brick, that took many years to write and many many more (20, to be exact) to be published. If you are already familiar with Laiseca's universe, you will not be dissapointed, everything is here and in large quantities. Only true fans have been able to finish it, though, cause it has violence and disgressions, both in big quantities. If it's too much for you, go straight to a chapter called 'El Bayreuth de los crotos' (something like 'The Bayreuth of bums'), 100 pages long, almost a short novel on its own rights.

Ex-student of one of the authors, currently in the US
I took this course on graduate quantum mechanics under one of the authors in the University of Madrid. I am currently completing a PhD project in which quantum mechanics plays a central role. This is a highly recommended book for advanced students, given the rigour of the treatment and the in-depth comments. The reader has to keep in mind that students taking this course have already completed a strong one year-period in quantum physics. You can search for either an english or a spanish edition. Specially apt for mathematically inclined readers.

Nice collection of stories
I've read other books of Urrea, both nonfiction, but his novels are always very entertaining so I did not hesitate to buy this book when I saw it. Most of Urrea's stories are spiritual and lead you into making out what the story means. One of his stories about the Tijuna dompes can be found in a previous work. Other then that the other stories were very well written and Urrea has learned to twist one's emotions while they are absorbed in his writing. I am a big fan of Urrea and would recommend to anybody to read this book and also his previous works.
