Far richer, deeper and broader than her title suggests
Professor Gardiol has generated a stunning work. It is not just about changes over a century in Argentina, not just about Jewish life during that time in that society, and not just about women's social realities and perceptions in the course of one-hundred years. (Earlier the author sent me draft copies of several of the items included.) What we have here is a three dimensional picture of subjective and social worlds over time. "The Silver Candelabra" is, simply, superb--and beautiful. Whitney H. Gordon, Ph.D.

Chilean Culture 101
This collection of short stories is a fantastic exposition of some of the shadier and more interesting aspects of Chilean culture. The thick regional slang and historical references keep the reader entertained and educated all at once.

Worthy Compilation of Applying Theology of Cross to Today
This book is collection of essays on using the theology of the cross as opposed to the theology of glory in our times of mulicultural witness.

Broken into the three categories of Signposts, Global Themes and North American Themes, this collection engages the reader to consider the biblical approach of emphasis and center on the cross. Although many may be offended by this and cry out, we do already, not so fast. Read and learn what this means biblically before so doing.

There is much to be gained from this well thought out work, especially how the theology of the cross might play itself out in such diverse witness situations such as Russia, Latinos in America, etc. Bioethics and postmoderism are explored as well.

Witness we must, and this work admonishes the body of Christ to do it with the core and heart of God's revelation, the theology of the cross. Lutherans who already realize this will be encouraged, and those outside such a theology will gain insight into the mind of God for outreach.

Crimes of a Global Company?
The investigation of the detective Cayetano Derderian about certain robberies and sabotages inside Acuario & Orion Co. drive him to discover no only the person who caused the problems but forced him to go deep into the real plans, philosophy and motives of this multinational company which open and close, buy or sale factories, mines or plantations throughout the world without caring about the economic, political, social or ecological consequences that their decisions can cause in the countries where they invested. This novel is not just a thriller, it is also a report about multinational companies making profits in a Global Market Economy.

Tragedy of Childhood
Published in Hardcover by Marlboro Pr (December, 1991)
Authors: Alberto Savinio and John Shepley
Amazon base price: $25.95
Used price: $6.00
Average review score:

Imperative reading for anyone interested in art or childhood
This is a gem of a book that is very much like a diary, if not therapy sessions. The book is divided into topics on which "Savinio" expels remembrances of things past. It is a bit like the novel "Carrots" by Jules Renard, if only in temperament. The theme of the book is put forth near the beginning when he writes: "How can it be denied that our parents' deepest joy feeds on the sufferings of us children?" Admittedly, this is not entirely accessible material. If one is interested in psychology (such as Alice Miller's work) and the essence of art and what kind of person is inclined to make art, this book speaks to that. Elsewhere he writes: "Why are we not more astonished by the annihilation of the will that the educator practices on the child?" Still elsewhere: "Every memory, be it only the shadow of a reminiscence of what childhood was, is the pitilessly cruel confirmation that life, by law, is a defeat." Overall, it is a very sad, angry, and truthful book, that questions the morality of education and self-proclaimed civilized society. ...Keep in mind that this book was first published in 1937, but was first drafted, in part, in 1919. WAY ahead if its time.

Seeing Castro Plain
Montaner has written the best book of the dozens I have read on Castro's Cuba. With humor, dry wit, impeccable research, and a straight-forward writing style, journalist Montaner explains the ideological and personal demons that rule Castro, the origins of the Cuban Revolution, and the 40-plus years of disasters that have befallen the Cuban people since their "liberation." He is unsparing in his criticism of United States ineptitude in handling Castro's Cuba, but recognizes that Castro, and Castro alone, bears ultimate responsibility for Cuba's distress. This is a wonderful book, written for anyone and everyone with curiosity about Cuba, the Cold War, and the nature of modern political evil. I literally could not put the book down, and read it in one sitting.
