excellent resource!
using this book helped me immensely when it came time to raise my own tipi! using only the book and my woefully average construction skills, i easily put up my 22 foot diameter tipi in the northern california woods in a few hours with minimal assistance, the first try!

the other parts of the book offer fascinating aspects related to tipi living, history and culture. a must read for any tipi enthusiast!
great!
heartLove, the electric tipi hippy!

Allows us to feel like true aficionadoes
The wealth of information included by the Laubins, and their heartfelt respect for the American Indian, permeate this book. Many tipi construction books these days are written by would-be hippies--but the Laubins come across as the real thing. They had real contact with the tribes who made the various designs and they understood the distinctions between them. Better yet they have done an excellent job at getting these techniques across to the reader. An excellent resource for our business and home pursuits alike and the only book on the subject we recommend.

Excellent and very complete.
Besides providing all necessary details on the materials, construction, setting up, and maintenance of a tipi, this book also provides comparisons with alternate designs and why one might be better than another, and gives advice on varying the size to fit your needs. It provides all the essentials, including adjustments for various seasons and types of weather (rain, snow, and wind), layout of living and sleeping space, furniture, storage of supplies, fire building, cooking, recipes, brain tanning, making parfleche containers, and moccasins. Plus it includes a few words about a native ceremony to properly dedicate the new lodge, and describes tipi etiquette for hosts and visitors. Lots of photos, drawings and detailed diagrams are provided.

Another wonderful Mandie mystery
It is spring break at Misses Heathwood's School for Girls, and fourteen-year-old Mandie can't wait to get home and see her longtime friend Joe Woodward who went off to college after the Christmas holidays. She is expecting to share some great times with him but when they finally meet things are awkward between the two and Mandie suddenly becomes very shy around her longtime friend. Still they have a great time with eachother. The two decide to go see Sallie Sweetwater at the Cherokee school, but on the way there discover a mysterious pile of mica and no one knows where it came from. More mysteriously, the pile disappears the next day. Who could have moved such a big pile of mica? And can this be related to the disappearance of Jacob Smith, the caretaker of Mandie's late father's place or is it related to the disappearance of wagons from three of Mandie's Cherokee relatives? Mandie and her friends are on the mystery again! This wasn't exactly the best Mandie book but good anyway. I wish there were more Mandie books throughout the year. I started reading them when I was 7 and now it has been a few years. I really wish to know the conclusion of Mandie's story.

Growing up with "Mandie"
This is the latest "Mandie" book that I have read.

I started reading them when I was about seven, and then they would take me about a week to finish.

Now, I'm fifteen, and the books still have as much appeal as they did when I was younger, although now, they only take me about two hours to read.

"Mandie" is a tradition with me. With each book, it seems as though she is still my age. In reality, however, she's only gone through about two years of her life as opposed to my eight.

Each book holds new surprises and new challenges for the young believer. I anticipate each new release, and hope to share them with a daughter of my own some day.

I encourage anyone to share these books with their daughters. The books grow with the reader. When I'm old and grey, I'll still be reading and re-reading the "Mandie" books.

God bless.

A wonderful book!
Mandie and the Buried Stranger is one of the best books Lois Gladys Leppard. She shows off her tallents more and more. I love reading her books and because of Lois Gladys Leppard I hope to become a writer. I hope young readers like me want to read this book because it is one of the BEST!

mandie and the charleston phantom---My FAVORITE mandie book
This book was really good. Mandie leaves home with Joe extremely jealous of Tommy. Mandie decides to ignore Joe and have a good time, but she can't get it off her mind. She runs into a mystery like always. At the Patton's beach house there is a mysterious phantom, but does Mandie really believe in ghosts? Tommy sister doesn't help matters with all of her weird ghost stories and tower tales, and why is she so rude to Mandie? Mandie learns some valuable lessons about friendship and jealousy with her friend back home.

I really like how Mandie is very faithful in God and has a special verse to say when she's scared. She always shares this verse with other people without hesitation. Mandie's paving a road for many other young christians and how to be faithful. I've been reading Mandie books since I was 11.

One of the Best Early Mandie Books!
This Mandie book was very good, with a great mystery. Mandie is going to visit her firend from school, Tommy Patton. She goes, and thinks she sees a sort of phantom rising off of the beautiful ocean! The house she is staying at also has a sort of mystery to it. Mandie also meets Tommy's sister, who acts in a queer way. The solution is a surprising one, and will keep you guessing until the last page.

Mandie Rules!
Another great Mandie adventure! In the story, Mandie loses her locket during an incident in a dark alley. Later, Mandie and her best friend Celia go back to find it, only to discover more than they bargained for! What happens next will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end of the book. I think other girls (and boys!) my age will like this book because they are so realistic and suspenseful. I like this book because Mandie is such a good example to everyone with her tremondous faith in God, and her attempts to guide others to the Lord.

Another great Mandie
This was another great title in the Mandie series. Mandie and her friend Cecila decide to go through the creepy and dark alley to get back to school on time. However when the girls get spooked Mandie's bracelet falls off. The next time they go back to the ally they find Mandie's bracelet and Mandie feels there is something very weird about the alley. Around the same time valueable items disappear all around town. Could the dark alley be connected to all this? Another great Mandie mystery.

Highly recommended and wonderfully entertaining reading
Highly recommended and wonderfully entertaining reading, Mandie And The Dark Alley is the latest title in Lois Leppard's wonderful series of adventures for young readers featuring Mandie and her faithful cat Snowball. This time Mandy is back at school when she and Celia have to cut through a dark alley to avoid being late. Mandie's locket falls off somewhere during the journey and the creepy passageway must be searched by lantern light. What they discover behind the dilapidated old warehouses come as a shock to Mandie!

Gladys Aylward -- Our New Heroine!
We saw the movie "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" and had to know more about this amazing woman. Our search lead us to this book. I read it out loud to my 12 year old daughter as my husband did the driving back from our Christmas vacation in Illinois. We read it straight through as we drove straight through! It was even more exciting than the movie! We, too, are on the lookout for anything more we can find to read about Gladys Aylward -- a true role model for our kids!!!

What a fantastic family book
My boys and I (ages 10 & 6) just finished reading this wonderful book. We home school and read many books together. Honestly, my guys did not want to read about a woman missionary. However, by the middle of the book, they would ask me to read another chapter. It was inspiring and exciting. Her life was full of life and danger. It was incredible for my boys to realize this was a real story, not fiction. I highly recommend it as a book to read as a family. We loved it.

A read-aloud delight for the whole family
I've literally just tucked my children into bed, having read the last three chapters of this amazing story--we couldn't stop! My 7 year-old son was intrigued from start to finish, and my 4 year-old daughter, asked "Could we read it again, PLEASE? " I'm now on the look-out for any other books about Gladys Aylward. What a shame that I grew up not knowing anything about this Godly, brave woman. What a story! We've been reading a chapter each day aloud, and have enjoyed every single word. I highly recommend it!

Little Woman - Big Faith
One of the better mission biographies around. The real story behind the classic movie "The Inn of Sixth Happiness". Gladys shares firsthand some great stories of God's direction and faithfulness. Her simple faith in God and His call will inspire any reader.

Inspirationaland Motivational
Although it is written in simplistic language, the contents is incredible. So much truth in such a small book. It is a true story which clearly shows how God has chosen the foolish of this world to confound the wisdom of the wise! A must read for any true believer.

Humbling and Inspiring
This book is about true Christianity. If you are tired of hearing about doctrine and interpretation, if you are weary of discussions about social issues that divide and polarize people, if you are suspicious of the Christianity you see around you, if you find religion reprehensible, read this book. You will see a picture of true Christianity.

This is a story that is not so much about Gladys Aylward as it is about God working through a willing and humble servant. This book is not about a great woman; this book is about a small, powerless and vulnerable human who was strengthened and loved by a great God. As she could not keep God's love, mercy, power and grace all to herself, she proceeded to share it with everyone and anyone around her, whatever the cost.

Repeatedly she risked her life to share God's love with those around her. The story is remarkable and miraculous because Gladys Aylward was so willing to get out of the way and let God work through her. She submitted her life, body and soul completely to her maker and let Him use her in any way he needed. This is a beautiful picture of servitude and an inspiration to those of us who try to live as Christians today in an opulent, spoiled and dark society. We cannot help but be humbled by this beautiful servant of God who repeatedly came near death in order to share the good news of Jesus Christ with those around her.

Good in almost all respects
For the most part I would agree with what other reviewers have said here. This is an excellent book on the SF earthquake and fire in almost all respects. The photos and drawings are probably the best one can find anywhere and the work is well researched. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone even remotely interested in the subject.

The reason I gave the book four stars instead of five is that it is written very mechanically. The authors spend much of the book telling us about the fate of individual buildings and so fail to tell the story of the disaster fully. At times it reads like an engineering report on San Francisco buildings. But this is a small flaw that should not deter anyone from getting the book.

1000 Stars
This NOT just another of those earthquake books!
Everyone devoted to the serious study of earthquakes or the mitigation of their hazard--geophysicists, seismologists, civil and structural engineers, architects, disaster relief workers, fire personnel, police, building officials and so on, all must have this book for their professional libraries. Yet they might overlook it for years, as I did, and I'm in that group. We might pass it by because it is so brilliantly written and beautifully illustrated, but there aren't any graphs or partial differential equations or whatever.
Interestingly, it is published by Cameron and Co., whose "Over London" etc. books have those astounding aerial photos. Well, I thought the new photos in this book must be by Cameron, they're so good. No, they're by Richard Hansen, Gladys Hansen's son, who also researched the old photos, and is a top-notch professional photographer, obviously.
So this is a top quality coffee-table book. But it is much, much more. It's the result of Hansen's many years of meticulous research and awesome scholarship on the subject, still going on, tracking the growing number of casualties (currently over 4000). It is an expose' of disgusting corruption, of arson and military looting. It describes the shaking, maps the areas of bad ground, the route of the fires, describes the misery of the refugees, and, finally, almost when one can stand no more bad stuff, true gut-level heroism. All is told in restrained, elegant prose, somehow making the catastrophe more profound. It is also the testament of a great San Francisco Fire Chief, terse, professional, of quietly distressing implications and of immense value to planners. It is a treasure, a classic. BUY IT!

Is the future in the past?
This fine work incorporates not only a large number of historical and present day photographs but a thoughtful narrative as well. Excellent descriptions of the cowardice and heroism displayed during the earthquake and subsequent fire. Most importantly, the book examines the errors repeated during the rebuilding of San Francisco and the potential for danger in the next earthquake.

A Wonderful Conclusion to the European Trip!
This book ends Mandie's trip through Europe in the Summer of1901. Mandie, Celia, Jonathan, Senator Morton, and Grandmother are inIreland when Mandie meets a little Irish girl. Molly is searching for leprachauns, and Mandie and her friends help. Uncle Ned shows up, and helps the search. Their trip is for some reason cut short, and they must return home. Mandie has no idea why, and Grandmother isn't talking. Everyone seems to know something Mandie doesn't. It's a good story, and a great conclusion to the European trip. At the end you also discover who the "Mysterious Women" is, and why she followed them. It is a book that lives up to the Mandie name.

One of The Best Mandie Books Written
I just finished reading this book and I'd recommend it to everybody. It's a real page turner, I couldn't put it down!I was so scared in the moment that Mandie was in the mill that I actually started to shake! I was really surprised by the ending. It caught me completely off guard.I also really liked the chapter that had the play in it.I was also really surprised when a certain character (dealing with Jonathan)showed up. The bible quote at the begining was really showed in this book. It is one of the greatest Mandie books ever wriiten!

Great Book!
I like this Mandie book. I like how they are traveling through Europe. I especially like when they are traveling in Ireland. I'm half Irish myself. I hope you make alot of Mandie books in the future. Because I love them I love them I love them!!

Very informitive for the novice
This is a great book to learn different weight lifting exercises. The pictures show alot. The book could use more instruction on nutrition.

The Absolute BEST Motivation!!
I got this book ten years ago, and have been weight training/bodybuilding ever since. With assistance from this book, I found it was easier to change my body (from size 18 pants to size 8) than my mind. The pep talk at the beginning of the book really changed my life. I feel much better about myself now. When people ask me how I keep at it, I recommend this book, and am buying yet another copy for a friend who's gotten a new gym membership, to keep her motivated!

Fantastic for beginning body builders
This book has done wonders for me. I started out not knowing anything about different exercises for weight training and how to start a program. Now I am working out at least 4-5 times a week and loving every minute of it. I saw results quickly and the pictures helped me understand how to do the exercises correctly. This is a must!!! I would love to see more books from the two lady authors.

Good for beginners
As a rank beginner, I found this book helpful. The instructions and pictures are easy to follow. The only drawback for me is that the authors seem to subscribe a bit to the "no pain no gain" theory. I ignored that and started out with no weight but my own body weight, and one set, and worked slowly from there. I have been improving and after six weeks can feel the difference. I find twice a week easy to stick with, too.

This is an excellent book! If you are looking for a no-nonsense, easy-to-do, anywhere/any time workout routine then this is the book for you. It is concise and clear. The instructions are well written, and the pictures provided help you visualize the exercises. There is also good information on staying healthy and eating well.

You can start implementing the techniques described immediately. This book offers a workout routine for the gym as well as for home! Your start up costs may be mimimal, depending on whether you want to work out at a gym or in your home, e.g., you may choose a gym membership or a few free weights and a workout bench or a full-blown home gym.

I've investigated/tried a lot work out programs that look good but aren't always convenient to use on a consistent basis. I am a working mom with five children. I commute and travel for my work. This doesn't leave a lot of time to exercise. I can do these easy routines anywhere/any time and began it with mimiumal expense. Even when I travel, I can use many of the exercises without my weights (dumbell/barbell/leg) or my benches!

It would be nice if the publisher would reprint this book. I think more people would consistenly workout if they had this resource available.

I have used this for years and have not found a better book
I want to buy a copy for my sister and I am so sad to see it is out of stock! She borrowed my book and loved it too. It worked for me as a great reference and guide and I am inspired by the pictures of Gladys. She looks great.
