Mandie and the Forbidden Attic
This was the second mandie book that I read. It was really exciting! I couldn't put it down! Mandies personality is very realistic, unlike some other books that I have read in the past. I just went to the library and checked out 29 Mandie books because I like them so much. :)

One of my favorites!
This is one of my absolute favorite Mandie Books! This book begins with Mandie being sent to the boarding school where her mother went. Once there she has to share a room, not to mention a bed, with the snootiest girl Mandie has ever met - April Snow. She is saved though, when she is allowed to move in with Celia. April is still out to get her and tries to get Mandie in trouble all the time. Then Mandie and Celia hear noise in the attic, and decide to invetigate...This investigation leads to an amazing discovery, and a new friend.

Very Good!!
I thought this book was very good!! It was sad when Mandie had to go to boarding school, and how she was EXPECTED to grow up as a respectable LADY. I love the part when Mandie and Celia find the little girl in the attic and how they hid her with Aunt Pheobee, or however you spell that, and Uncle Cal. I give this book two thumbs up! Keep it up Louis!

Fantastic Reading!
This book takes place during Mandie's trip through Europe in 1901 with Grandmother Taft, Senator Morton,Celia, and Jonathan. They are visiting the Baroness Geisler's(whom they meet in book sixteen) Castle in Germany. In this adventure Mandie gets involved in a mystery of a jumping tree and the Baroness's Grandson. The end is very surprising, yet not what I had hoped for. That is why I gave this book four stars, instead of five.

Super
I really liked this book. I love this whole series of books. I'm 13 and I still read them. They are really worth reading. Especially the books where she's in school or in Europe.

In one word, SUSPENSFUL!!!
This book is a must reader! Very suspensful as are all of the "Mandie" books. If you can read this one, DO! If you love mysteries of any kind you will love this series. It ranks up there with Nancy Drew. Only you get many things from a Christian prospective. Clean , nice, suspensful, funny books. What more could you ask for?

Wow!
This is the 34th book of the Mandie series, and I have them all. I really enjoyed this book, but the one thing that annoyed me was Mandie's impatence. She could absolutly not wait a little while to find out what was written on the quilt.
But other than that it is really good and I reccomend the entire series.

The mysterious message from the past...
Mandie and her friends, Joe and Celia, have just begun their summer vacation and can't wait to begin their trip by going to visit Jonathan Guyer in New York. Things change though when Mandie's Cherokee friend Uncle Ned shows up with the quilt Mandie found in the attic, with the mysterious message. He had promised Mandie he would ask Uncle Wirt what it meant but now Uncle Ned refuses to tell Mandie what it means, saying that it is a bad,sad message. Of course it stirs up the couriosity juices in Mandie, and she changes her plans and decides to go see her Cherokee people first, to find out what the message on the quilt means, instead of visiting Jonathan first. Just when Mandie and her friends get settled down the quilt mysteriously disappears! Who could have taken yet? Can it be connected to the disappearence, once again, of Mandie's cousin T'sani, who is a noctorious troublemaker? Will they ever find out what the message means? Read to find out!

This, as usual, was another wonderful Mandie book. I have been reading them since I was 9 and it has been 4 years since I have started and they are still as good as the first ones. I can't wait for the next installment called Mandie and the New York Secret. It looks like it will reveal why Mrs. Taft and Jonathan's father don't have a very good relationship...something from the past caused the rift and what is it? I can't wait to find out!

The mystery of the quilt
This was another great Mandie book as she and her friends try to solve the mystery of the mysterious message on the Cherokee quilt. Like every other Mandie this book was fabulous! I can't wait for Mandie #36: Mandie and the New York Secret!

Engrossing pioneer saga illustrating family/community values
Finely crafted characters and a fast and exciting pace provide an excellent read. A needed reminder in today's world what family and community love and honor were and should still be. There may have been hardships but the rewards had much more impact than those of today. Good Job !!!

Very readable.
I enjoyed following the characters as they traveled, explored and settled new areas. These seem to be real people with real problems, concerns, prejudices. I would love to see further stories following these characters.

A very good insight into the life experiences of our past.
I enjoyed the book very much as it provided insight into the times and travels of our pioneers. The ending of the book is especially heart touching. This book was written from the memories, impressions and research of Glayds into her family backgound. Facts made into very good historical fiction. At the age of 84 she is almost finished with another book relating to the experiences of the other side of her family - the Roachs. An amazing book and lady.

a good read
This novel is a soothing and comforting story of farm family in Maine. The main character is Jen Shaw, a young woman lving with her family in a small community during the 1920's, I think.

This book is the Waltons meet Ethan Frome, depicting a year in the life of a family that more and more face the modern world of air planes, college educations, and city life.

The characaters are sympathetic, strong and human. The chronicle of farm living's chores, rituals, and tasks are fascinating.

Lyrical , Deeply Moving, Depiction of Maine
This is one of my favorite books. I have re-read it many times and always find something new to admire about it. Mrs. Carroll knows this life and it shows-her characters really live on the page. Jen Shaw and especially her father Mark are beautifully drawn. Mark may seem almost emotionless, but one comes to understand that he loves his children and farm too deeply to express by mere words. This is a way of life that may no longer exist, but I'm so glad that it was chronicled. Mrs. Carroll was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for "ATET" but lost to Pearl Buck's "The Good Earth". Her books are all written from her heart about the Maine she knew so well, and are worth checking out if you can find them. Youll be glad you did.

What a delight; these people still exist in Maine life.
I have read this book as part of a seminar being conducted by the Maine Humanities Council and Margaret Chase Smith Library. We will discuss the book at our April 1999 meeting. What a delight to read about people during the time of the early 20s, and people who still exist in parts of Maine today. Some things never change, thank God . Most Maine-iacs can relate to the life of the Shaw family and no doubt can link to people in a certain place. I understand that the book was made into a movie by Warner Bros. in 1934. I wonder if it is available in a video?

A Bare Unpainted Table (The New Issues Press Poetry Series)

Lyrical and moving poetry
Gladys Cardiff's poetry balances between the breathtaking and the acutely painful -- she opens doors with her images that lead the reader forward into new spaces, new emotional states. I recommend her work highly -- personal, moving, yet completely accessible and relevant. Gorgeous important work.

Rich and Complex
This is an amazing book, sophisticated and musical. Whether Cardiff is telling us about Giacometti, turtles, erotic photographs, or her joyful return to the Qualla Boundary, these poems are engrossing. I've reread the book several times since I bought it; its richness seems infinite.

Cardiff writes intelligently about art, grief and loss.
Cardiff's poetry is intelligent, humane and passionate. Hers is a poetry of conciliation. She is not preaching to the converted. Her Native American heritage doesn't "limit" her poetry, it illuminates it. "Repatriation" presents one of the most complex of cultural subjects in such a way as to foster an understanding which reading any number of articles could not equal. Art, loss, grief, the natural world--these are Cardiff's subjects. While her poems are sometimes difficult and challenging, the rewards they offer are well worth the effort. The poem "It has something to do with final words," about an air disaster, and about the power of poetry and words themselves, is one I return to again and again.

A Very Mysterious Mandie
Mandie returns home to find that a Courtroom Battle may take place! Why? Well, Mandie's former step-mother comes to town claiming she has a Will to Mandie's father's house. But that can't be right...because Mandie has the will. But it turns out that when Uncle John went to file her Will, he found it had been stolen from his desk drawer! Mandie and Joe go on a search of the house, but with no luck. Who's Will is real? And where is Mandie's Will? A Courtroom Battle is sure to happen. And it does, but it isn't quite as dramatic as the cover would suggest. This is a good Mandie Book though, so I would reccomend not skipping it.

THIS IS GREAT
This book is wonderful. It is a story of Mandie trying to protect her father's belongings and keep them safe from the "evil stepmother" I'd say more but it would spoil it! I definetly recommend this book!

I love all mandie books
Mandie books are so cool. I cheek them out every time I go to the library.I would like to own all of them (all of the books). If you have not read this books you dont know what you are missing!!!Even my mom reads them and she realy likes them too.

Alright, but not great.
Most of the early Mandie Books are fantastic, but I didn't think this one was quite as good. It picks up right where the previous book leaves off. Mandie, Sallie, and the rest off their friends from the last book are in this book. They are taking the gold they discovered to a bank. They have the gold in the baggage car, with Uncle Ned guarding it. Suddenly the baggage car detaches from the train... What follows makes up a good mystery, but I just found parts of it boring. But, if you're a devoted Mandie fan, you'll want to read it to keep relevant to the series. At the end, it gives you a lead in to number four. I didn't think it was great, but it was still a good read.

What I think of Mandie and the Ghost Bandits
Mandie is a twelve year-old girl that is a christian. The book starts out with Mandie getting on a train carrying gold. Later on the train ride the gold is stolen by a couple of ghost ''bandits''. When Mandie arrives in Asheville her and her friends Joe, Sallie, and Mandie's cat Snowball set out to find the gold that was stolen. This book is alright. Sometimes the book got boring, and somethime it really got you thinking. While Mandie and her friends are looking for the gold they are kidnapped. Will Mandie and her friends escape and find the gold? Read Mandie and the Ghost Bandits to find out!

Great! Just like every other Mandie Book!
This was one of my favorite Mandie Books! (Every Mandie Book is my favorite book!) I think this book was one of those books that has a little bit of everything in it, you know what I mean? It has everything! Excitement, a little mystery, and even some scary parts. If you are hesitating to by a Mandie Book, you don't need to think again! Every Mandie Book is great!

Splendid Reading!
This was a very good book, but not as good as some. This is one you have to have time to read. It's hard to just set it down and pick it up two days later and understand everything. I can't say anything bad about a Mandie Book. It's impossible! This book takes place in Mandie's travels through Europe in 1901. Mandie takes a trip to the Catacombs with Celia and Jonathan. That one trip is the basis for most of the adventure. I just couldn't get into the story until the very end, when the mystery was solved. This is a good book to read when you have a lot of time, like on a rainy day or a long car trip. It was still a very good book. I still think you should read it, and read the books in order to understand them best.

What happened at Borley Rectory?
Fictional account trying to explain the mysteries behind Borley Rectory, the most haunted house in England. Originally published in 1941, two years after the rectory burned to the ground under mysterious circumstances.

Great Gladys
This is one of Mitchell's best, I think, combining what appear to be two of her favourite themes, children and weirdness. I'm only sorry she didn't throw in a few nuns, too, which would have enhanced the weirdness factor almost to the point it reached in _St. Peter's Finger_. This novel never ceased to intrigue and fascinate me, and it has one of her ghastlier and more surprising denouments, as well. Well worth an evening's read.

A Mitchell Classic
Both Philip Larkin and Patricia Craig considered this to be one of the best Gladys Mitchells, dealing as it does with old newspaper reports and a haunted house.

The supernatural elements come in from the beginning, when the reptilian psychologist (and witch?) Mrs. Bradley finds the diary of an acquitted murderess who later committed suicide in a pond - accused of pushing her cousin from the window of a haunted house.

The plot is one of Mitchell's best, involving one of the best uses of a haunted house in detective fiction (Mitchell uses the M. R. James approach), missing juvenile delinquents, an old woman choked to death on grated carrot. Mrs. Bradley untangles a convoluted maze of impersonation and insanity in her own inimicable fashion - "Mrs. Bradley is a far better detective than some who have achieved world-wide fame," said the Times Literary Supplement.

In short, one of Mitchell's best books, with a first-class setting, one of her best plots, and probably the nastiest murderer in the canon.
