A life-saver for workers unjustly kicked out!
I was fortunate to know author Noa Davenport before she and her colleagues wrote this book, but I didn't learn about it until a few days after my board had "asked" for my resignation as executive director of a nonprofit agency I loved. (Their move was not only a complete surprise, but badly mistaken and completely unjustified from my perspective--still.) I was in deep shock when Noa told me about the book, then nearly ready for publication. She sent me several chapters as e-mail attachments. At first I balked at the term "mobbing" and resisted the book's admonitions to take care of myself and recognize the "evil" that had befallen me and others in our organization. I wanted to take full responsibility for however I had failed to satisfy my employers. Certainly I did not want to claim special status as a victim. But as I read, I found the discussion of the mobbing phenomenon so accurately explaining what I had just experienced, that I was able to pull out of self-blame mode rather quickly. I see now that this book was a life-saver for me! Perhaps literally.

A very brave look at the dark side of the work world....
This book describes with amazing accuracy a very dark and ugly side of the work world. Having been a victim of serious emotional abuse in the workplace, this book's account of what other's have experienced helped me to see that my situation was not unique at all. What is astounding to me is that we do not have laws that protect employees from this vile form of emotional abuse that does eventually have serious effects on a worker's health and ability to earn a living. "Mobbing" is an important work and should be distributed to every employee at every American company along with their own company handbook. The behaviors described in this book should be a crime punishable by law. Any company that actively engages in these practices or passively allows them to happen ought to be boycotted and deserves to go belly up.

Learn to Recognize and Speak About This Damaging Behavior
This fine book offers a comprehensive view of what unfortunately may be an all too common behavior in the workplace. The term "mobbing" describes an emotional assault which begins when an individual becomes the target of disrespectful and harmful behavior.

The authors show us a workplace panorama that features an environment filled with innuendo, rumors and public discrediting that ultimately results in forcing the victim out of the workplace. Almost immediately, you see some vignette that mirrors one of your own work experiences, or that of a co-worker. You may even discover that you have unknowingly participated as part of the mob.

Unlike more overt behavior, mobbing may assume a subtle or discrete persona, which may make it harder to recognize. One of the most powerful lessons from this extraordinary book is the gift of receiving language by which we may talk about this problem. The comprehensive introduction provides insights into the nature of the mobbing syndrome, offers some cases and provides research background and the terminology employed throughout the text.

The book is organized into four major parts.

In the first part we learn what mobbing is and how it occurs, and then focuses on why this behavior occurs and persists. It also introduces the point that unresolved workplace conflicts can both trigger and intensify the mobbing process. (A later chapter extensively examines conflict resolution).

The second section of the book offers strategies to individuals. There is information related to staying healthy and avoiding longer term personal injury as well as tips on how to deflect or overcome future professional repercussions. There is excellent information herein for victims and their families.

Organizational leaders and HR professionals will benefit from the third part of the book which examines impact and prevention, and offers examples of organizations that are successfully combating this debilitating and destructive syndrome.

The final part of the book further examines the challenges of conflict resolution, the many aspects of the law as it may currently be used to address mobbing and broadens the discussion to include what mobbing means to the economy and society.

Dr. Noa Davenport, Ruth Distler Schwartz and Gail Pursell Elliott have done a find job both collecting and presenting the material. The book is very readable and offers plenty of good advice and solutions both for individuals and organizations.

More than any other book
I'm amazed how often the story from this book comes to mind . . . decades after I last read it! It is such a wonderful tale of adventure and friendship and discovery. And I have always been one who easily misplaces things . . . and I'm always wishing I had that little box I could go to and find my lost keys, etc.! And I have told so many people in my life about that little box and how I wish I had one. I also think about the boots, and the gloves. I wish they would reprint this book so I could share the story with my children (other than just from memory) and give it to all of my nieces and nephews!

Wonderfuly Magical
This is a story about two girls who find some magical things in an old chest. Once they start to use them, they realize that the itmes are magic. I read this book when I was about 10 years old. I loved it tremendously. I must have gone to the library after school at least once a week just to read bits of it before going home. I purchased a used copy recently and recommend it for any child or adult who wants to feel like their 10 again. A wonderful magical journey.

More fun than 7 League Boots
I bought this book at school in 1973, and read it dozens of times as a child. I never grew tired of the story. Even though it has been more than 20 years since I last read this book, I can still remember most of the things the witch left... Just thinking about the story makes me feel young, curious, and happy. This book stands with the better-known classics. I can't imagine why it has ever gone out of print.

Machu Picchu: A Civil Engineering Marvel

A Primer for Discovering the Wonders of Machu Picchu
A major contribution, this book is a treasure of up-to-date archaeological documentation plus analysis and interpretation of the architecture and engineering of the legendary Inca site. As scholar and frequent academic study-tour leader to Machu Picchu, I can attest to the accuracy of the authors' observations presented in a lucid text and complemented by a wealth of excellent black-and-white photographs, detailed site plans and architectural drawings. In an unusual collaborative effort, American engineer Kenneth R. Wright and Peruvian archaeologist Alfredo Valencia Zegarra join their expertise to describe with painstaking care the multiple challenges that were faced by the Inca builders including geography, site selection, engineering infrastructure, city planning, water system, drainage, agriculture, stonework, and construction methods. In addition, Gordon McEwan contributes an essential chapter on the cultural backgrounf of the Inca civilization; and Ruth M. Wright's "Walking Tour" chapter provides a concise, clear guide for exploring the main site as well as other attractions nearby. Destined to become a classic and model study for other Inca sites, this is an invaluable resource for experts in the field and general public alike.

A Landmark Study!
Machu Picchu, A Civil Engineering Marvel is an extraordinary accomplishment. It is not merely a travel book or ruins guide. It is the result of at least five years of study, exploration and detailed mapping by a competent civil engineer and actually is a tremendous contribution to serious archaeology on the history and accomplishments of the Peruvian Inca empire.

Mr. Wright, a water engineering specialist, worked with close cooperation with a government archaeological expert from Peru headquarters. His particular specialized interest was the drinking and waste disposal system for the people who inhabitated the site, which is called a "palace" but is actually much more than that. He also detailed the construction of the agricultural terraces. It is a scholastic textbook of the first rank.

Not Just for Engineers
I expected a civil engineering perspective on one of my favorite subjects, Machu Picchu, to be at least a little dry. Machu Picchu; A Civil Engineering Marvel is anything but. The book melds technical information on a compelling topic with observations, insights and scads of breathtaking photographs. The result is a technically substantial engineering survey presented as a coffee-table book. I have read a lot of materials on Machu Picchu, yet I can't remember the last time I encountered so much new information in one place. The book explores such engineering facets of Machu Picchu as planning, hydrology, hydraulics, drainage, agriculture and construction, and demonstrates why these things are significant and interesting. Machu Picchu; A Civil Engineering Marvel breathes extra life into this basic information by providing context, analysis, archaeological perspective and even a walking guide for touring the site.

Machu Picchu; A Civil Engineering Marvel has application, understandability and appeal for such diverse individuals as anthropologists, archaeologists, travelers, scenery-lovers and historians, as well as engineers. Machu Picchu buffs like myself will certainly enjoy the book's refreshing, new angle.

BEST BOOK ON HTML EVER!
This book is Terrific! It gets right to the point and doesn't waste time or words. It makes learning fun & easy. If you have never written a web page or are just beginning HTML, this book is JUST RIGHT for you.

Now I can't wait to get all of Ruth Maran's other books. School was never this fun. Thanks, Ruth for creating a book series that REALLY DOES THE JOB! A+++

Visually Exciting
This invaluable instruction manual breaks down web page design to its simplest form, and teaches how to harness the power and versatility of HTML to generate attractive looking web pages. The impression of having a private 'tutor' guiding you each step of the way is created through the step-by-step visual approach, seeing that you can emulate the exact procedures outlined without any apprehension, and then view the final result in a browser to measure your progress.

Each procedure is conveyed in a logical sequence beginning with the basic concepts and proceeding to more advanced themes, so that learning HTML becomes effortless. This method of visually imparting knowledge eliminates the problem of having to leaf through several pages to find the screen shot that relates to the instructions, along with the frustration of having to re-read the same paragraph many times in order to grasp the main point.

There is a detachable page at the beginning of the book containing a hexadecimal value colour chart with sample colours that can be applied to enhance the appearance of a page, and for easy reference, a comprehensive summary of all the HTML tags used in the course and their functions are given at the end of the book. In addition to the basic HTML tags, this impressive book also covers such areas as resizing images, creating tables, frames, adding sound and video, image maps, java applets and many more features that will allow you to easily create and publish professional looking web pages.

This pictorial, self-teaching 'tutor' is just what any beginner or advanced student needs to benefit from the exciting domain of web page design.

Oh so easy to understand!
This was an incredibly easy book to understand. Minimal words, lots of colorful pictures and fun graphics which show you (instead of describing to you) how to perform a function. I had another HTML book that I just got bored with after about 50 pages. This book was so engaging that I pretty much finished the book in a day and am able to start coding in HTML. This is a very good "how-to" book in the technical aspect of HTML. The only down side is that it promotes poor web page design (but this book is not about learning design so I'm still giving it 5 stars). For the design aspect of web pages, I would recommend picking up a copy of Robin William's "Design for Non-Designers" or "Web Design for Non-Designers."

A must for the beginner!

The Sirens call you to Fez
If you've never been to Fez, you'll feel like you have after reading Ruth Knafo Setton's 'The Road to Fez'... She creates and successfully sustains an abstract atmosphere of tension and mystique throughout the story, all the while her descriptions of the land and its characters are so vivid and concrete they are almost tangible. The colors and the smells of a land and time so removed from ours, stick with you long after the last page is turned. Very shortly after starting her story, you'll become familiar with a way of life described so intimately, you are startled to remember that Brit, the main character, is actually not wholly of this magical place. Even Brit has to pull back from her daily experience to remember she has options to return to her former life in the US. The land and people are so real and intense that you, as a reader, will become part of it as well. If you hear the Sirens calling you to read this book, listen to them.!

What a fascinating, literary book!
"The Road To Fez" By Ruth Knafo Setton is a riveting tale written in lyrical prose and sensitivity to detail.

The novel tells the story of a young American-Jewish woman, born in Morrocco, who goes back to visit her family, but what she really has in mind is her dashing uncle (her mother's much-younger brother) .

Within the Moroccan compound where the entire clan lives, the reader experiences the sights, smells and sounds of this exotic place, and becomes a witness to both the personal intrigues and the global drama of the Jewish community.

Highly recommended both as a historical account of a minority going through change in a society where it doesn't belong, and as a fictional story of passion and its consequences.

READ THIS BOOK!
I didn't know what to expect when a friend gave me this book but I was completely blown away by Ruth Knafo Setton's beautiful, pasionate writing. THE ROAD TO FEZ tells the story of a forbidden love affair between Gaby and Brit, two desperate, lost souls who need each other more than they realize. What the reader comes to understand, along with the lovers, is that love is a miracle that cannot be judged or limited. Gaby and Brit echo other lovers in the novel, all separated by society's rules. But these two take a chance and find a love they never dreamed of. I couldn't put this book down, and ever since I finished it, I've been dreaming of Gaby and Brit!
I was shocked to learn that this is Ruth Knafo Setton's first novel. She writes with so much power, confidence and urgency. I've never read a book like this one that is so erotic, tragic, funny and magical. I'll be on the lookout for her next book!
You've got a new fan, Ms. Setton!

The essential Belgian cookbook in English
This is THE best book in English on Belgian cuisine. People who have visited Belgium, love it's typical dishes: Belgian endives, aspargus, waffles, "Waterzooi", mussels, fries, ... This book - which appeals to beginning and expert cooks - explains you in a simple and playful way how to make these dishes yourself.

If you love Belgium, you will love this cookbook
I am trying these recipes one by one and they are excellent so far and I am no great cook. The sidebars are full of interesting tidbits and I am planning my garden around ingredients needed in these recipes. Anyone who has been to Belgium knows they have the best beer in the world. The people are lovely, their country is gorgeous, their food superb and their beer un-beatable. This is my very favorite cookbook. I only hope I can learn to grow Belgian endive and white asparagus. If you don't love this cookbook, you don't love food. It is a treasure!

Everybody really DOES eat well in Belgium
I married into a Belgian family, and I have to say, I was intimidated by my mother-in-law's wonderful cooking. How would I ever measure up? In fifteen years, I've learned quite a few of her recipes, but after reading this book, I finally understand where she's coming from. Ruth Van Waerbeek not only introduces Belgian food and cooking, but an entire way of life. The recipes are great, and the stories and anecdotes are even better. This is one of those cookbooks you can sit and read cover-to-cover, even when you're not looking for a recipe. I'm ordering one for my mother-in-law --she'll love it!

Lubin Hits the Mark
On the brink of layoff, I found this book at the library among the usual collection of books on resume' building, interviewing and job search. Reading the first chapters about downsizing I could see that this book was about my story, starting with the "On The Brink" experience of knowing something drastic is about to happen soon. Turns out the book is about the internal challenges and transitions involved in loosing a job, dealing with "what to do next" and how to make the journy to the next job a rewarding one.

Now I have my own copy from Amazon which I use most every day. It is very helpful.

It's been a great help to me so far!
Oh, if only this book would be given out by HR Departments when they downsize, as is on the news every day! I lost my job a while back, and reading through this book, I really relate to the experiences. The set-up is logical. The advice is smart and easy to understand, and the exercises are actually pretty fun. You can also pick up and put down the book without needing to start over. I don't have a new job yet, but I feel OK about that, and I think this book is to credit. In fact, I wish I had read this book before I got laid off--I might have realized I was in the wrong job!

From James W. Pennebaker, Ph.D., author of "Opening Up"
Luban has written an outstanding book for people dealing with job loss or disillusionment. Her insights -- which are based on both research and hands-on consulting -- will help anyone in coping with the emotional roller coaster of finding a job or redefining a career. This book is laced with excellent stories and practical advice, as well as a broad range of job-hunting resources. I would recommend this book to anyone who has or might become a corporate refugee." --James W. The faithfulness of Ruth
Francine Rivers continues her excellent Lineage of Grace series with the story of Ruth. She follows the familiar narrative in the Bible as Ruth's husband and father-in-law die and she accompanies her mother-in-law Naomi back to her native Bethlehem. Throughout the book we see Ruth's courage and the faith she had adopted during her marriage to Naomi's son. She never stops believing that God will guide her to a better life and does not give in to the temptation of the false gods which surround her. Rivers has a way of remaining true to the Bible and yet fleshing out the stories so that they remain vivid in the reader's mind.

Amazed!!
Francine Rivers has become my favorite author. The story of Ruth has made me long to be an example of a Godly woman ,of this century. I can only struggle to put my feelings into words..when Francine Rivers paints beautiful word pictures in our minds as we read her work. Ruth and her devotion,I want to be like her!! As i look into my young daughters eyes..i am in wonder on how to raise a child to have such passion for God like Ruth. May the story of Ruth make everyone who reads of her, be inspired to continue on in their lifes journey with a new perspective.. Thank you Francine Rivers, for giving us deep soul searching books that challenge us women to go on...

When faith brings grace...
When I first picked up this book, I began to read it with my safety net of doubt firmly in place. Most of the biblical fiction I've encountered over the years have been full of stiff dialog or narrowly researched story lines that lose the readers interest in it's quest to drive home a moral or spiritual point. This one is different.

Rivers tossed that bad habit of stiff dialog out the window when she wove together this partly fictional account of Ruth, Naomi and Boaz. As one of my favorite stories since I was a little girl, it was so warming to read more about Ruth, and I was delighted that Rivers kept her character true to her original, biblical presentation. She didn't try to remind us that Ruth was a girl like any of the rest of us, by pointing out her flaws or catching her in her weak moments. Instead she portrays her as a strong, faithful, trusting woman whose faith in God matures as she makes her new life with her mother-in-law after her husband dies. Rivers understanding and research of biblical culture and customs more fully explains the impact of Ruth leaving her family to move back to Naomi's home town, this enlightenment brings even more meaning to a story I assumed I already completely grasped.

Rivers also adds a great deal of humor in her character's dialog and actions. She gives the reader a great visua,l which is especially important when we already know the basic outline and outcome of the story.

I fully recommend this book to anyone who has read the story of Ruth and Boaz a hundred times and still finds themselves thinking about the details we might never know the full truth of.

Delightful
I received this delightful book as a gift from a dear friend. It is one of the most wonderful gifts I have ever received. Ruth Gendler is clearly a most perceptive woman, whose descriptions of the personalities of each of the qualities are beautiful and artistic. What I find a shame is the lack of care in quality shown by the publishers - the book deserves better.

Gendler introduces the reader to several familiar friends...
Ever felt like your emotions have taken on a life of their own? Gendler in her Book of Qualities takes that feeling and bust it wide open. A friend gave me a photocopied copy to read and I ran out and bought my own copy. Gendler's ability to give each emotion (quality) their own breath is intriguing. I long to take a walk with Stillness by the ocean... and realize I have done so too little in my hectic life. So many books these days are nice little leasure empty entertaining snipets of fun. Gendler's book is one of those rare finds that will leave you longing for more and glad you took your brain out for the stretch. Enjoy.

Wonderful, it's been passed on to many kindred souls.
Ruth Gendler has the delightful ability to speak and discribe qualities that often seem intangible. Each quality is given flesh and speaks to my whole being with tears and laughter. I have recommended this book to numerous people who have responded with similar emotions. This book speaks to my spiritual being which is ever searching for growth and refreshment.

Tassajara (and Ed Brown) stand the Test of Time
My current copy of the Tassajara Bread Book is a 1970 edition, and it is still my favorite (along with Tassajara Cooking, which unfortunately doesn't seem to be available). It has stood the test of time over the years, too many great recipes to just single out one. The Whole Wheat Pancakes, with some fresh blueberries added, is my favorite way to spoil guests. The best thing about the Tassajara books is that they indeed show you a method for cooking or baking, not just recipes to be followed.

Oil stains, flour stains, unidentifiable traces of the years, I don't think I'll ever part with my original copy, but with binding paste falling out now each time I open it and the cover unattached, I think it's time to get an updated copy. You won't go wrong with this book!

More of a "cooking book" than a "cook book".
My ex-husband has "my" copy of the original 1970 version of *The Tassajara Bread Book*, so a few years ago I just had to run out and get the "Revised & Updated Edition" published in 1986. More than merely a book of recipes, it is a truly bonny bread book with marvelously detailed instructions and diagrams as was the original, but I must say Edward Brown's recipe for Tibetan Barley Bread alone is worth the price of this book.

*The Tassajara Bread Book* is more of a "cooking book" than a "cook book". Janet@netcom.com says *The Tassajara Bread Book* is "a great introduction to baking bread" because "this is a great basic how-to book". As with bread itself, "basic" is simply some flour mixed with enough water to form a dough; anything else we do to it merely makes it "civilized". I do not know how "civilized" Janet's baking is, nor do I know how much time she has just for bre! ad making, but for those of us who lead hectic lives always on the go but still want to minimize the amount of preprocessed and junk foods we eat *The Tassajara Bread Book* is top drawer.

My only dissatisfaction is that Edward Brown's *The Tassajara Cooking Book*, an excellent companion to this one, seems to be out-of-print at this time. Of course, my ex-husband has "my" copy of the original 1970 version.

"The Bible for Bread Baking"
The Washington Post calls this book the bible for bread baking, and they are right on. This book is the best bread baking book I've come across. It gives techniques on actually making and baking a wide variety of breads. If you're looking for a way to make bread that comes out crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside, this book will help you. It's even beyond a bread baking book because it includes 118 recipes-everything from breads and rolls to pastries, muffins, and desserts. The recipes are easy to follow and ingredients are available at grocery stores-perfect for the at-home cook. The whole wheat pancake recipe is one of the many stand outs- absolutely mouth watering. If you're interested in baking breads among many, many other bread related recipes, I highly recommend this book.
