Very helpful for pullers of all ages
Excellent behavior modification resource for pullers of all ages. While the format of the workbook is geared toward children and adolescents, the underlying principles and techniques used in the book will help all pullers. The authors identify 6 main reasons we pull, then lead us through exercises in which the puller identifies their particular triggers related to each of those 6 reasons, and tailors a program that addresses their own unique pulling patterns. For example, what situations or environments do you pull in? Are you aware or unaware when you are pulling? Does a need to fiddle or to have something in your mouth play a part in your pulling? The book helps you identify you patterns and gives concrete suggestions on how to deal with them. The authors are very understanding and compassionate.

Fabulous Book!
This is one of the best books out there for anyone considering breeding show dogs. Great details on how to study pedigrees and how to best develop your own line. Has become hard to find, but is well worth the money if you can locate a copy.

The "Bible" of dog breeding, whelping and raising puppies
Whether you are a long time breeder or a novice, this book is a must. I have been breeding Yorkies since the late seventies and Maltese since the early ninties and I still refer to this book during each litter. This book provides easy to understand instructions along with pictures and graphics for breeding, the whelping process, and care of the pups afterwards including tube feeding if necessary. It details the warning signs of a failing pup so that you can take proactive action. Don't let the title scare you into thinking that this book is not for you. If you are currently breeding or if you are planning on breeding in the future, this is the only book on the subject that you will ever need. Amen.

The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog
This is the best book around for people with toy and small breeds. It was given to me when my first champion Bichon was about to be bred. I have used it with every litter for the past 20yrs. If you can find it, get it. It will be of great help.

The Labor Progress Handbook: Early Interventions to Prevent and Treat Dystocia

A Must-Have for Doulas
This book should be on the recommended reading list for all doula training programs! In a clear, concise, and thoughtful way, Penny explains what makes labor progress, how to recognize labor progress, and how to help with labor progress. My copy is always in my birth bag. I have used it at several births for various reasons, and have always found it to be helpful, with reminders or even just to reaffirm that I've done everything possible. I recommend this book for anyone in the childbirth field and for expectant couples as well!

Birth professionals: Don't leave home without this book!
Every once in awhile, a book on childbirth comes along that is a standout. The Labor Progress Handbook is one of those books, but what else would one expect from Penny Simkin and Ruth Ancheta? The authors have produced a lucid, logical, beautifully organized, clearly written, bounteously illustrated, meticulously documented book that gives birth professionals a systematic, practical basis to prevent, diagnose, and treat poor progress in labor. Approaching dystocia holistically, the authors consider the effects of the woman's emotional state, her environment, and the impact of hospital or caregiver policies and attitudes in addition to the standard "powers, passage, passenger" explanation for labor progress. And they are woman centered: the laboring woman is the active agent in resolving difficulties, and the unacceptability of a recommendation always contraindicates its use. If you teach about labor, care for laboring women, or work as a doula or birth assistant, you should--no, must--read this book.

The book for anyone involved in childbirth!
This deceptively slim book is jam-packed with useful information that can be used by just about anyone involved in childbirth today. I have recommended it be added as a textbook to the midwifery program where I teach, and I am planning to purchase a copy for the nursing station of the hospital where I work. The illustrations are very informative, the text is well organized, and the suggestions are well-documented both from research and from anecdotal evidence.

Photographs Memoir of a `Living ' Legend !
This book captures the essence of Filmore East ( NYC ) days, a labour of love;love of an era thats ends. The Amalie Rothschild`s pictures ( in color and in Black & White ) are great, and was taken from all angles of the auditorium ,tickets sales, public, backstages, lobby, artists ( Miles Davis,Mountain ,The Who, Neil Young & Crazy Horse,Grateful Dead,Santana,Quicksilver Message Service among other ). The chapter `Theater of Light : The Joshua Light Show 'is very interesting and detailed, showing the slides projectors and the light`s show liquid oil and glicerine bottles used with diferents colors or viscosities to produce the `psichedelic' visual like bubbles, kaleidoscopes and mystic symbols.A psichedelic trademark.
An incridible photo of the last day concert with roses in each seat.June 27,1971- `Thank You And Farewell' was writed in the marquee after the last show with Allman Brothers Band,Moby Grape,J Geils Band,Mountain among others.
In the page 141 are include a list of all shows at Filmore East march 8,1968 throught June 27,1971.
Today ! 2001, in the place that was The Filmore East are the `Emigrant Savings Bank ' and the front bricks ( upper side) are the same,a `living organism' there, full of memories like us.

Total Time Machine
Wow! I worked in this place for 2 plus years and didn't know half this stuff. Great therapy for all those fading brain cells. Left me with a smile on my face and music in my heart.

Fillmore East Memoir - A Triumph!
New York's rock, blues, and yes, jazz shrine of music culture during the late 1960's and early 1970's has finaly been been given it's due thanks to Ms. Rothschild. We the faithful, who for the most part never knew the secrets of the venue and it's most powerful accoutrements, Lights & Sound, are now sated. Special thanks must go to Stacy Kreutzman and her fine publishing company for another glorius volume. Everything we always wanted to know about the venue is here wonderfully remembered in word and photo. You mean the Light Show was behind the stage! And, that "Exit sign" was the passageway backstage were the real fun was! Ms.Rothschild walks us through the place and it's inner workings taking special care to show and explain just how Joshua's Lights worked its magic. Her live concert photos are revelatory, especially that Holy Grail photo of the Dead, Fleetwood Mac and the Allman's onstage for their incredible, once in a lifetime jam. The photos of the outer lobby and ticket window took me instantly back to the place; and the memories lost for 30 years started flooding back. The uninitiated will love the book for its stunning photos of Miles, Jimi, and Duane, just to mention a few. The archivists will love the book for it's [apparently] thoroughly updated chronology of concerts. I love it all, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

Demystification of modeling
This book is a concise, effective introduction to dynamic systems modeling
and how it can be used to provide insight to biological problems. The use
of dynamic modeling is demonstrated through example models, a new model
each chapter. The authors walk the reader/student through each model and
then make suggestions as to how it can be further exploited for greater
understanding of the problem. The greatest aspect of this book lies in
its demystification of computer modeling in general and shows that any
person, no matter their quantitative skills, can effectively model a
system by adhering to certain fundamentals. The models that are provided
range from ecosystems to individual cells, espousing a 'systems' approach
to every level of biology. Overall, this book is easy to understand; providing a mental tool by which one can bring greater clarity to complex, dynamic problems.

The means to an improved understanding of biological systems
The increasing interconnectedness and complexity of ecological and biological systems is undoubtedly increasing the potential environmental consequences of our decisions. Thus the growing importance of improving our understanding of the characteristics and internal relationships that govern the system's behavior. Hannon and Ruth clearly illustrate how we can think about problems from a 'dynamic systems' perspective, and how we can use technical programs to apply this new way of thinking as a tool to model biological systems. They present the means to build a greater understanding of the phenomena we see, the context of the problems that confront us, and the potential and expected effects of any interventions we may make.

Like the book's theoretical foundations, the modeling software used is both user-friendly for easy up-take by beginners, and sufficiently powerful for those at a more advanced level needing a robust software package. The reader is actively guided through the model development, simulation and interpretation process. This learning by participation and experience increases the readers understanding of the wide variety of contexts in which modeling techniques can be applied, and how to apply them.

Those interested in biological issues will find this valuable from the practical biological examples that are used, and the novel approach in which these issues are addressed. These range from spatial and population dynamics, to models of organisms, genetic movements and physical systems.

Further, the clarity of writing, and the familiarity of the examples and problems addressed, makes this an enjoyable educational experience for all people interested in developing a new perspective of the environment in which they live and work.

Perhaps most importantly, the analogical strength of the techniques used and models developed is such that researchers in all fields of academia, from economics to sociology, will benefit from it. It challenges us to re-examine how we define the problems we seek to solve, and to discipline our existing conceptualization of systems. It presents us with tools that challenge, yet compliment and strengthen traditional scientific approaches.

A great dynamic modeling book
Modeling Dynamic Biological Systems is a wonderful book for students and researchers interested in learning about dynamic modeling. I used this book in the first class I took dealing with dynamic modeling and found it very easy to understand and follow. The basic design of the book is to introduce the basic concepts of dynamic modeling and how to get started designing models in STELLA. Descriptions for designing models and the example models are based on STELLA modeling software, an intuitive iconographic program that allows even non-technical readers to begin modeling quickly. After the introduction to dynamic modeling the book is divided up into parts based on different areas of biology: Physical and Biochemical Models, Genetics Models, Models of Organisms, Single Population Models, Multiple Population Models, and Catastrophe and Self-Organization. In each of these parts there are a number of models dealing with different issues. The models are clearly explained and both the iconographic diagram and the equations are given so users can create the example models from the book or check their own work.

This book is a great resource for both novice and experienced modelers. Biologists from all areas will find this useful if they are interested in learning about dynamic modeling. Even if one's area of interest is not exactly one of the areas focused on in the book, the skills and basic method of dynamic modeling will be learned and the reader can then apply these to their area of interest. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in dynamic modeling, even non-biologists. With its great examples and clear explanations this makes a great resource for learning about dynamic modeling.

Open Your Heart: A Mid-Life Fable
When I started reading this book, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found was a wonderful story that I feel all middle age people can identify with. We all seem to have questions as to why we are who we are. This books showed me how to find the answers, by identifying my own inner characters. By identifying each inner character, I was able to see things in myself that I had never seen before. I will now take better care of all parts of my being. This is definetly a must read for all of the baby boomers out there.

Open Your Heart, A Mid-Life Fable
I recommend "Open Your Heart" as a fun and simple read allowing for a range of self-reflection. You can take Ruth Cherry's fable and relate each chapter to yourself in any degree you see, sort of like a daily horoscope reading. Or you can simply just be entertained. It is enjoyable and witty, and with it's slim form, a great book to take on the plane in your carry-on.

A fantastic present!
When a friend sent me Open Your Heart: A Mid-Life Fable, it was a real gift! This is an extremely insightful, inspirational book about self discovery and acceptance of our true personality, with all its positive and negative angles. It helped me understand some of my reactions, quaint characteristics and antics. It also encouraged me to start my own spiritual journey. Many thanks to Ruth for writing this wonderful book! Gracias!

Wonderful, though more text than I wanted
I was very pleased by the large number of high-quality reproductions. Still, as far as I'm concerned there should have been *more*. The book contains (a rough count) about 280 pages containing text or mostly text, out of about 630 total pages. However, I'm very happy with the book.

Best Rauschenberg book ever!
Best book, I have ever bought

Excellent well presented book
The problem with art books is that they go out of print too quickly. This is a beautifully presented book on Rauschenberg that was released with the big retrospective at the Guggenheim in 97/98. Barnes and Noble still had copies avaiable as of Sept. 99, so check there -- they were even discounted!

God for Women?
Reflectively, and logically, God did not exist for women within the construction of religious except as the afterthought in the creation of man, a theory to which religion has remained fixed throughout the centuries as evidenced by the inadequate recognition of women in the daily life cycle of everything but being used as a vessel of child bearing. This theory is substantiated by most theories of gender dynamics (created mostly by men) to form a view that while women are disappointed to recognize they are second class citizens in a world bound by traditional religions, their unique qualities have never been given "equal time" or encouragement to develop to apply to what is thought as traditional male pursuits, usually defined by the hierarchies of dominance in military formats. Altering the dynamics of that reality requires than women give significant thought to their own strengths and vulnerabilities in a "larger" context to define their own place in social, political space and economic space and stop trying to fit into that designed by men, for men. Redefining the interpretation of themselves within traditional religious context may well be a part of that requirement to release their innermost ability and capacity for expression and social impact, an historic recognized need but as yet unrealized by most, and unaddressed. Sharing God within the traditional biblical philosophies will not be easy given historic interpretations of their place in humanity but may well be worth the effort to study and examine. No doubt, finding God for women may well lie in the "greater domain" of integrating their capacity to give birth as well as to maintain it according to an experience that men are incapable of appreciating fully from that larger perspective. Ideal reading for all adults interested in Christian gender integration and power potential.

Inspiring Book
The authors spent a lot of time researching and interviewing various women that are considered extremely spiritual. The result is a book of many stories of women from different backgrounds and the many paths to took to find their spirituality.

I found the book very inspiring and wanted to read it again as soon as I finished the last page. I recommend this book for every woman out there.

Thought provoking and insightful.
Upon reading this book for the first time I found myself pleasantly surprised. First published in 1991, this book is as germaine to women's spirituality today as it was then. Instead of being a book about Christian women only, Anderson and Hopkins have included a cross section of North American women in their study. Women of many different faiths candidly discuss their personal revelations regarding their spiritual growth and their relationships with the divine.

Interspersed with the women's stories are the experiences of the two authors as they struggled to research and write this book. This sharing of the authors' experiences makes the book accessible to anyone, reminding us that we are all only human - subject to doubts and questions as easily as we are to revelations and joy. Instead of being a dry, preaching, self-help book, the combined experiences of Anderson and Hopkins and their subjects create a story full of laughter, joy, pain, sorrow and, most importantly, a sense that as women we must explore our own spiritual lives in our own ways in order to live at our fullest potential.

The Lake of Darkness

Delightful
I went to my library to check out "A Sight for Sore Eyes" as I was trying to describe it to a friend and wanted to re-read it for some details. Discovered "The Lake of Darkness" on the Ruth Rendell shelf.

What a great book! I could hardly put it down. I loved the ending where the bad guy forgets one very important detail and can't do anything about it. We assume that he will be caught, but don't know for sure.

What I like about this book was that the characters seem to be normal, but they are anything but. It makes one wonder what ones neighbors might really be doing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a great story.

Rendell is amazing
The woman never ceases to amaze me. I have read so many Rendell/Vine books and just can't stop. So few authors can look into the warped, secret side of someone the world perceives as normal in the acutely fascinating way she does. No skipping words or pages in her books.
'Darkness' ranks as one of the most perfectly crafted mysteries ever written. When all the pieces fit so beautifully--without stretching and reaching, without the reader thinking he's on a fictional ride--so perfectly, it is physically satisfying. The reader feels like one of the gods on Olympus looking down on these characters who stumble inexorably into what is to be their fate.
At the end of this book, I sat back and sighed with satisfaction. Yes, brilliant, Ruth. How do you do it?

This Woman Can Write!
Yes, she does put Grisham to shame. As well as Grafton and the rest. I would say she's on at least a par with Jeffrey Ashford. What is it about these British authors?

This story has become one of my favorite Rendell novels. It is definitely "a keeper." She really has a way with dissecting her characters---and they are so nefarious! Tim! Francesca! What a surprise! And did you notice how clever the author was in making it seem like it was Russell who met his demise? I had to flip back several times to be sure of the time sequence.

A great, suspenseful, well-told story. You won't be disappointed. Almost as good as "Sight for Sore Eyes."
