"This is a really fascinating book, about an incredible woma
This is a terrific book that tells the story of a truly amazing woman and in the process, tells the story of hundreds of rhythym and blues performers and groups and the lives they led, in the early days of this important american music. The reader learns how Ms. Brown overcame unbelievable obstacles, both personal and business, and came out on top-in the process, initiating the creation of a great organization called The Rhythm and Blues Foundation, which is based in Washington DC, and exists for the purpose of helping to preserve the music and which provides cash awards and support for R&B pioneers.

A true R&B Legend
Ruth Brown has seen it all--from staying in sleazy segregated hotels on tour in Jim Crow America in the 40s and 50s to the top of the R&B charts in the 50s to later hearing her songs on the radio when she was broke and ignored by the record companies she helped build. This lady was the "diva" of R&B and still performs today to packed audiences. We're lucky to have this historical record of her life, for it is a reflection of what many black performers of her day had to go through before achieving the heights of musical stardom, and what they had to go through even after achieving the heights. A great lady and a great performer!

Helpful for learning how to console others in grief
I enjoyed "Moving Beyond Grief" immensely. It helped me realize how to better help others in grief. Then, too, it made me realize that families going through divorce encounter the same sense of loss and frustration. A great book!

A wonderful book of comfort for those in sorrow.
I am author of "Moving Beyond Grief" Following is a comment I received from a reader in New York.

My sister died of bone cancer at 45 years of age. I found "Moving Beyond Grief" to be a great comfort as well as a great book. The book was so wonderful. I cried, but was happy and relieved at the same time as I read it.

A great help in one's healing from grief
To say this book is a great help in one's healing is a great understatement. I has helped me through every page, through every tear, through every situation recorded. The humanness of my grieving is depicted in the pages of this book. It helps to see I am not crazy or "losing it" but just normal death of a loved one is most likely the most traumatic and soul searching thing you will ever go through. Words cannot express my appreciation for God having given Ruth the insight to compile this book.

Most poignant memoir of a mother/daughter relationship
I feel I cannot do justice writing a review on such a high caliber memoir. Emotions run so deep and the characters are made so lifelike that I felt such a kinship with this family. Hillary Johnson is a fantastic writer and a fabulous daughter and caretaker. She deserves five gold stars for the wonderful job she did taking care of her mother through such dramatic medical horrors. I am honored and enriched for having read her book. Her mother was the bravest of women who faced life and illness with the best attitude possible. Her book will be the biggest help to me as my mother's health continues to decline. Thank you to both of you, Hillary and Ruth. Your mother was absolutely right to encourage the writing of this painful, truthful account of her living and dying. I am ordering it now for my sisters.

Eloquent and Fine
This "shared memoir" is a gem in every way: from the author's eloquent writing style to her mother's whimsical yet provocative drawings and even the smooth surfaces of the pages. Like the physical feel of the pages and the colors in her mother's artwork, the authors' words are finely wrought and rich. I didn't want to put the book down.

Wonderful book!
This book is a entrancing autobiography and biography of a woman and her mother and in particular the story of a rekindeling of their connection as adults when the mother is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Unlike the suggestion of the title this is not a depressing story, it is strongly life affirming, funny and an interesting look at two remarkable women. It has helped me greatly in dealing with my own mother's death from cancer. I recomend it highly!

Gentle and More Helpful Than She'll Ever Know
I save my reviews for books that deserve it. And this is definitely one of them.

Though it is tempting to take a star out of the rating because of a few punctuation and typographical errors throughout the book, I won't (someone at the editor's office should check page 163, though, it is missing a paragraph or two); this book is just too darned good to not give 5 stars.

Not only does she bring an open and creative mind to the work, and encourage her readers to do so as well, but Ms. Drayer also makes numerology fun. Throughout the text, she is gentle, and continually urges the reader to figure it out for themself; they are, after all, the final authority on the subject.

Good for both experienced numerologists, and the absolute beginner, put this book high on your "To Read" list if you are at all interested in learning numerology, or wanting a little breeze to set you sailing on the journey of self-discovery

A Gift to Yourself
Numerology: The Power in Numbers, A Right & Left Brain Approach, Ruth Abrams Drayer's 3rd Edition, is a remarkable book that clearly explains the principles, clarifies the process and provides enlightening spiritual keys to our own personal past, present and future. A positive, uplifting book that unlocks the significance of our names and birthdates in a way that validates each and all of us. Well worth buying and reading!!

Numerology: The Power In Numbers, A Right & Left Brain Appr
I am so pleased to have a copy of Ruth Drayer's Revised book (3rd Edition)of this most informative and enlightening book on Numerology. I first came across Ruth's work 30 years ago and have used her books in workshops and private counseling over the
years. This book is SIMPLY THE BEST for those who are just beginning their study of Numerology or long time practitioners as myself. With this Edition, I find the new diagrams and instructions helpful to my workshop students as they learn how
to chart their own life and those of family and friends. The
expanded information on the ATTAINMENT Number is inspired as
well as the expanded information on relationship comparisons.
If you are looking for spiritual insight as well as practical guidance for your every-day life, I highly recommend this book.

I'm quite impressed and satisfied with this book and with the entire Simplified series. This book presents an excellent introduction to and overview of PC upgrade and repair. It is very accessible to beginners and provides useful information for more experienced users. For visual learners (like myself), the illustrations are a great help.

It's challenging to take a complex subject and express it simply, clearly, concisely, and comprehensively. This book meets the challenge.

Other books in the Simplified series are listed on Amazon.com under the author name Ruth Maran. A similar series (which I also enjoy very much) by the same author is the Teach Yourself Visually series.

Perfection Salad: Women and Cooking at the Turn of the Centu
While PERFECTION SALAD is certainly about food, it is also a rich cultural history of women and food. With a wonderful selection of resources, from a recipe for raisin stuffed marshmallows to a celebration of Fannie Farmer, this is a delightful and interesting treat. Introduction by Michael Stern, co-author of EAT YOUR WAY ACROSS THE U.S.A and Gourmet Magazine?s popular column "Roadfood."

Fascinating and scholarly read
Foodies and feminists alike should read this book. As part of the Modern Food Library reprints, chosen by Ruth Reichl (who is known for her good taste and her own laudable literary contributions - "Tender at the Bone" and "Comfort Me with Apples"), "Perfection Salad" describes all the elements present at the turn of the century that combined to forever change the way Americans view food. Food, its preparation and presentation became a female obsession in an time where the kitchen was really the only arena in which a woman could rule. The female nutritionists and cooks from that era seemed bent upon exerting control on SOMETHING, and that something turned out to be food - with sometimes terrible consequences. After reading "Perfection Salad", I understood the recipes that my grandmother (born in 1898) and my mother after her learned and served. Don't be frightened by the scholarly look of "Perfection Salad" - there are hilarious nuggets in the text - like color-themed menus (everything green and white, for example), putting everything into gelatin for the sake of "daintiness" (no messy lettuce leaves hanging out of your mouth) and covering absolutely anything and everything with "white sauce". For more laughs, peruse "The Gallery of Regrettable Food" by James Lileks in which he has gathered some of the most revolting-looking photos of the consequences of "Perfection Salad".

Ever wonder where pineapple-marshmallow salad comes from?
This highly readable, beautifully researched book provides a fascinating look into American "cuisine" circa 1850-1920. The Boston Cooking School and other institutions promoted Americanization through cooking conducted on scientific principles, although immigrants proved reluctant to give up their "coarse and unsavory" meals for triumphs of digestibility such as the following, served to President Wilson on his first day in office: "cream of celery soup, fish with white sauce, roast capon with two white vegetables, a fruit salad, and a dessert made with gelatin, custard, and whipped cream"(212). Other triumphs included a salad made of bananas and pimentos bound together with mayonnaise and whipped cream and, later, grapefruit pieces mixed with dessert mints. Often funny and always interesting, this book
also helps readers to understand the convenience food mania of the 1950s.

Precious Solitude
A book with an inviting title that delivers what it promises. Precious Solitude is a perfect retreat companion, but provides an extensive menu of ideas for how to relax, refuel, and rejuvenate even with our everyday lives swirling madly around us. Adopt just a handful of suggestions from Ruth Fishel's latest and relearn the meaning of the word "calm." You'll be glad you did -- and honestly, so will those around you. Incidentally, if you're tempted to dismiss the notion of solitude as an unimaginable luxury, then you need this book even more than most of us!

Finding our True Selves...
This is one book that you will keep by your bedside, carry with you to the beach or to the office. In these stressful times being alone is often suspect, considered, somehow, a failure. Ruth Fishel gently takes us through our days, our fears and our longings and offers a means, through solitude, to find our true Selves. "Precious Solitudes" is a loving companion, reminding us daily that we are precious and our time alone is precious.

Learn to use solitude as a tool for personal growth.
I've always had a problem with being quiet and alone with my thoughts. Ruth book includes the thoughts and feelings of a diverse background of people toward the subject of solitude. I found that I'm not alone! Precious Solitude frees the reader to transform any negative feelings toward solitude to something positive and productive.

I found a personal message in the chapter titled "Walking". I'm working on loosing weight and my doctor told me I have to walk 1-hour a day. No skipping - no excuses! I've been ignoring his directive for two weeks now. I just couldn't find anything productive about walking alone an hour each day. I've put all of my energy into not doing it and complaining about how hard it's going to be. "Walking" changed my perspective on the entire situation. Now I'm looking forward to my 1-hour walks. I'll have time to myself to think, plan, enjoy nature, get centered, focused and loose weight! I learned that solitude can be a very productive time!

Precious Solitude is written in small vignettes and is very easy to read. Excellent book!

Internal Peace
This book lead me to an internal peace that I cannot describe. My son was a runaway and I had not seen him in 4 months when I purchased this book. Reading it gave me strength and hope and the peace that only our Lord can give. I continue to recommend this book to others facing tough teen agers and to mention stories in the book that helped me through a most difficult time.

The peace which came as a result of reading this book has brought me to a higher level in my relationship with God.

A great encouraging book to give away.
I have had this book in my library for years and it is a great source of encouragment. Mrs. Graham's insightful way of sharing her heart with others fans the flame of hope. This "my" book to give to other whose children are "in the far country."

Excellent reading for the discouraged parent of a prodigal.
I found the book to be a very encouraging word in a time of need when my teenage son had turned his back on the Lord. Ruth's words were helpful and insightful. It was a nice reminder that others have gone through the same or similar thing and come out the other side victorious in the Lord.

BEWARE SOME OF THE INFO!!
I just moved to San Francisco, and this book was extremely helpful. However, to those about to move, I urge you to skip the Movers section. I hired one of their recommended movers: One Big Man & One Big Truck. The book said they could move a 1 BR in 1 1/2 hours. HA!!! AFTER they tore up my $4,000 sofa, then tried to lie and say the hole had been there all along, it took them 3 hours to move HALF the apartment (and of course, only moved the lightest items first, even though we TOLD them we only needed help with the heavy objects), until my husband finally told them to take off. THEN the owner dared to insinuate that we were liars, his employees NEVER lie, etc., and to minimize our damage by saying "Hey, a $4,000 sofa is no big deal to me, I deal with them every day." We're still trying to resolve this mess a month later, and every time I look at the sofa, my blood boils. BEWARE.

A Must-Have
This book is something everyone moving to San Francisco should have. It covers everything from descriptions of the neighborhoods to what to include in an earthquake kit. Internet addresses and phone numbers to banks, rental agencies, and just about anything else you can think of are included. I used the book a lot before I arrived and am using it just as much, if not more, after making the move. I highly recommend it.

EVERYTHING
This book has so much info. A good book to help you anticipate your move!

Excel Comfort
I first saw this book in an Excel class I took a few days ago.
We were not allowed to keep the books because they were needed for future students. However, I was completely sold on Office 97 Simplified during the class and knew I wanted a book of my own. I came back to work and told my boss about it and he is allowing me to purchase two for our office. So many computer books are so complicated the average person cannot follow them but Office 97 Simplified uses a step-by-step, no nonsense wording with pictures that even a young child could benefit from it. I salute the writers and publishers for creating a book that almost anyone can understand. Thank you!

Great Quick Reference
In our corporate environment, all our computers are loaded with the Office software, minus reference materials. In the beginning, not all of us were fully comfortable with the programs, and I was one of them.

I wanted a quick reference guide as well as a pictorial tutorial (the pictures helped me overcome my initial computer-phobia).

YEARS later, this book continues to help my colleagues who now come to me for my "expertise." I merely whip out my book and show them, step by step.

My book now shares space with my dictionary and thesaurus as my go-to resource. Since then, I also bought other Simplified Books on the Internet, Web Development, Powerpoint, Word, Excel, Windows 95 and 98. What a great series! Can't think of a better library of computer basics.

Thanks for making it seem so easy, and so much fun!

Excellent book for beginners or reference for experienced!
As a computer instructor, I have gone through many books trying to find an easy-to-understand textbook for my beginning students. I found it in Ruth Maran's "Simplified" books. I find most textbooks on Office 97 too wordy and hard to follow. The "Simplified" books show you how to use each application in short easy steps with colorful illustrations. Anyone can learn how to use Microsoft Office with these books. There are no excuses now.
