The Cooper Clinic Solution to the Diet Revolution
This should be on every Registered Dietitians' bookshelf!! I
would highly recommend this book to the public that requires sound information on weight loss. This book is good reading and
practical in it's approach. The book deals with strategies for
success and how to handle obstacles which is not always well covered in other weight management books. I bought her earlier book "The Balancing Act"; I didn't think that book could be outdone but this book is even better!! Sincerely, a Registered Dietitian

The Cooper Clinic Solution to the Diet Revolution
A book for those demanding a healthy heart and a healthy lifestyle!

Incredible
I just received this book and haven't been able to put it down. The information is clear and concise and practical. I love this book and feel that everything I have learned about wieght loss and thought on my own have now been confirmed. This book is not gimicky. It is realistic. This book helps us put into practice what most of us already know. If you are buying the book you are already to take the next step, and this is the answer!!! On a side note, Raynelle who also recommends this book was featured in Prevention, that is where I heard of this book and she looks awesome!! I hope to do as well as she did and be healthy in the process.

An Endurable Vision
Although it is difficult for me to select my favorite modern Greek poet since I hold several of them in high esteem, among his peers, Seferis crests the wave of poetic intensity. His poetry is always laden with images often as tragic as they are beautiful. Like Kimon Friar, Edmund Keeley has brought the powerful verse of modern Greeks to the English reader (see the Amazon excerpts of this work). In sum, Seferis' poetic world is enthralling.

poems even for people who don't like poetry...
...(like myself). Seferis is graceful, erudite, and profound without being pretentious or willfully obscure. His work is lovely and haunting. I first became aware of his poems when Stephen King excerpted bits of them in SALEM'S LOT, which I think says something about how broad an audience Seferis appeals to. His poems tell stories as well as create imagery and mood, which helps make their beauty all the more affecting.

Absolutely wonderful!
Kavafy is the the perfect guide in our exploration of life. I reccommend this book highly. Edmund Keeley has done a wonderful job in bringing Kavafy's poetry to us.

Outstanding Cookbook
I purchased this book and Alfred Portale's 12 Seasons Cookbook at the same time. Both are gorgeous to look at and flip through, but I find myself going to this one time and time again for recipes I actually plan to try. Clearly, Gordon Ramsay is a man in love with food and his craft. Don't let what you may have heard about him (e.g., he does not roam through the dining area of his top rated restaurant to glad-hand patrons and solicit their thoughts, believing that anything leaving his kitchen is perfect and beyond criticism) deter you from picking this up!

I found the one theme, intended or not, that makes this a favourite is that many components of the various recipes are interchangeable. For example, there is a great recipe for a lobster and mango/baby spinach salad. I was shopping for ingredients and found the lobster sub-par, so I managed to substitute his marinated tuna recipe in with great success. Same goes with recipes for various pureed sauces and soups. And particularly useful are discussions on the best of seasonal ingredients (notwithstanding that many may not be available to the average cook due to cost, or geographical limitations)

Overall, a top notch book and highly recommended.

Great Scots Chef
With a talent for the simple and elegant, Gordon has produced a book with class. Typical of Ramseys attention to detail a multi-tude of simple and surprisingly easy recipes. No poncy overblown recipes here just class. And to think he played for Glasgow Rangers Soccer team. what he lacked in finesse on the field he more than makes up with finesse in the kitchen and nice to here him singing the praises of the quality of Scots ingredients.

A Cookbook Of Purity and Elegance
These are the words Charlie Trotter described Ramsey's cooking. I bought this based upon a recommendation about new, hot cookbooks coming out. Sometimes one is really disappointed with the final product.

By first inspection, I imagined this was another of those letdowns. Beautiful photos, seasonal recipe organization, and what appeared to be bland style recipes.

But upon trying several, this book delivers Trotter's assessment: purity and elegance. Although tried only Cauliflower and Sorrel Soup, Tomato And Parmesan Gratinee Tarts and Duck Breasts with Endive Tarts, this food is elegant and tastes are clean, distinct and so, so satisfying.

Anxious to explore this hot London cook even more.

Mark Twain with Salt
In this slim but tugid volume, Robb White, heretofor known only to a narrow audience of small-boat nuts, introduces the wide world to his native waters, the Florida Gulf Coast, just like Mark Twain did for his, the Mississippi. This is no idle comparison: Like Twain, he has played with and piloted all kinds of boats upon his waters, met all life's characters there, and kept his eyes wide open all the time. If you think his language can't be as pungent, his characers as rich, his stories as deceptively simple -- well, don't judge till you read him. Then you might agree, Huck Finn ain't got nuthin' on ol' Robb White.

Quality, rightness and virtue: the wildman's revenge!
Robb White writes of his wild childhood and wild boating life. And he gets away with it because he's so good! This is candid, uproarious writing of the best sort. It's specific. And you know he knows what he's talking about because he's been there. What a tonic! His work reminds me of Jack Saunders. : ) --A fellow folk writer who hasn't gotten his break yet. Robb's is rough'n'tumble family storytelling, yet it's gentle. It's personal...and it's general. Just the right stuff. More! ...OK, I have to let the cat out of the bag: if you want more, subscribe to the thrifty, friendly little magazine "Messing About In Boats" right now. Robb has been writing biweekly columns for it for years now. What great good times! And fiesty, helpful boating (and living) info, too. (Did you know that Robb is the world's best bass fisherman? He'll tell you why sometime...)

Glorious, Joyful,Brilliant Storytelling
You will not want to put it down, and Mr. white will leave you wanting much more! A brillient storyteller with a touch of Mark Twain and Will Rogers, but contempory and better!!!
Share the laughter and joy, give this book to someone, be careful, you may not get it back.
You can not, not like it!

This book touched my heart
This is a beautifully written, heart-wrenching story with a mesmerizing Southern *voice* that I could read all day long! This is the story of Pearl when she is suddenly abandoned by her flighty, selfish mother to live with Aunt Ivy whom she has never met. Pearl tries to show that she doesn't care, but the author is very skillful at subtly showing the pain Pearl does feel. While staying with her aunt, Pearl gets to know the funny boy next door, Moonpie, who lives with his dying grandmother, and she comes to know what a family can be and the love that is possible. Even though her mother returns at the end of the book, she is still the same hurtful, oblivious person as ever. But Pearl is not the same person she was - and won't ever be again. Pearl's experiences have changed her inside and we know that someday she will carve out a better life for herself.

A fine story of family and friendships
When Ruby is left at her aunt's house, she thinks it's a temporary arrangement; but soon she begins to wonder if her mother will return. Her feelings of abandonment soften as she becomes used to an unusual boy, the love of an aunt, and the failings of her mother. A fine story of family and friendships.

Couldn't Put It Down
Twelve year old Pearl is left with her Aunt Ivy one summer, abandoned by her free-willing, self-centered mother, Ruby. I felt as though I was right there with her as she dealt with her pain and confusion. This book draws you in and keeps you there. Barbara O'Connor is right up there with authors like Katherine Paterson and Cynthia Voight. Wonderful read!

Romance-Savannah Style
When visiting Savannah, Ms. Byrd's book is a must. Byrd's book is like having your own personal tour guide with you the whole time you are in Savannah. Buy this book and let Ms. Byrd show you how truly romantic Savannah can be. Bravo Ms. Byrd!

Plan Your Next Trip
No matter how many times one visits Savannah, it is impossible to see everything this eccentric, yet delightful southern city has to offer without the help of a local. Georgia R. Byrd, founding editor of Savannah Magazine and contibuting writer to Southern Living magazine, serves up a charming little taste of Savannah's best attractions as well as some of her deep, dark secrets. The book is divided into 26 sections of possible adventures for visitors. They range from delectible descriptions of quaint bed and breakfasts and hidden antique stores, to riverboat cruises and tours of Civil War forts, to delicious restaurants and isolated beaches. Choose from sections like, "High Cotton, High Times, and High Tea" - a two day, one night look at the best of Savannah's affluent past, "Love Turns Green" - a two day, one night celebration of Saint Patrick's Day when the river runs green, "Working Up A Sweat" - a one day, one night Savannah sports sampler, or "Divine Diversions" - a one day, one night look at Savannah architecture. Byrd doesn't stop at Savannah, though, she details trips to nearby Tybee Island, Hilton Head, Saint Simon's Island, and Cumberland Island. It will be hard to choose what to do first! Thank you, Mrs. Byrd, for helping me plan my next trip!

Romantic Days and Nights in Savannah
Georgia Byrd, in her entirely unique style, paints a wonderful picture of life and times in Savannah, Georgia. The book was an engrossing read--just sorry it wasn't longer. The door is wide open for additional sequels and I look forward to Georgia's next effort. Bravo, Ms. Byrd!!

School for Hawaiian Girls

An engaging and deftly written novel
Set in Hawaii in the early 20th century, School For Hawaiian Girls by Georgia Ka'apuni McMillen is an engaging and deftly written novel about the family of a murdered Hawaiian schoolgirl. The murder investigation is fraught with errors and sloppy policework, so the family copes by not speaking of the murder, or of the daughter they lost. But their silence and denial takes a toll on them, and they must grapple with the price of forgetting and what it means to remember, in this charged and emotional tale of the human psyche.

"Concise and Engrossing"
Lydia attends the School for Hawaiian Girls on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1922. When she becomes pregnant, her mother ships her off to Maui, forcing her to give up her illegitimate child. A year later, on her way to find her daughter, Lydia's body is found in the cane field. Raped and her throat slashed, she is soon forgotten by everyone but her family.

Moani owns a kayaking business in Honolulu in 1985. Taking care of her mentally disabled sister, Pua, she dreams of buying the School for Hawaiian Girls and turning it into a hotel. In her attempt to purchase the land, she uncovers information about her family, and Lydia's death, and discovers that the past is never completely buried.

"School for Hawaiian Girls" spans several generations, tying together Lydia's murder with Moani's mundane life. Despite the grisly death, the novel is less a "whodunit" than a tale about the mysteries of family. Several plots are interwoven by the use of various narrators, giving the reader a broader perspective. The different voices can be a bit redundant at times, but the threads of the story twine together well overall.

Georgia Ka'apuni McMillen gives each character/narrator a strong and distinct voice. While not always likable, Sam sheds light on his sister's murder and the factors behind it. Moani, his great-niece, possesses an equally strong presence as she attempts to succeed without her family's dubious assistance.

Supported by a number of secondary characters, several of whom get a chance to tell their story, these protagonists all breathe on the page. The advantage of the multiple points of view is that no one comes across as perfect -- rather, only human. The complexity of the characters keeps you reading even once the murderer is uncovered.

McMillen's writing style is concise and engrossing, steeped in the distinct dialect of the Hawaiian islands. For those not familiar with the Hawaiian pidgin dialect, certain phrases might seem confusing, but it allows for an authenticity of place and person. The ending feels abrupt and leaves several small threads dangling, but compared to the overall story, this flaw is minor.

"School for Hawaiian Girls" is not a murder mystery, but a complex story of generations and the "sins of the fathers" visited on the descendants. It's also a carefully woven tale of the conflict between the missionary influence and the native Hawaiian culture, and the resulting problems and prejudices that arose between the two. Most of all, however, it's a story of the interconnectedness of the islands and its families. If you think that Hawaii is simply palm trees and paradise, you'll learn a valuable lesson from "School for Hawaiian Girls."

You must read School for Hawaiian Girls
I found this book impossible to put down once I started reading. I do not read a lot but thought this subject looked interesting to me. The book gives us a glimpse into the culture and lives of the Hawaiian people. Coming from the midwest I found this story very interesting. This is NOT your usual read. M's McMillen did a thorough job of catching my interest throughout the entire book. I hope there is a second book in the coming.

After reading this book I found a renewed interest in searching out new authors to read.

I highly recommend this book.

Civil War letters, memoirs
"In the Saddle" is an interesting blend of letters, diary excerpts and reminescences of a Confederate cavalry unit - the 5th Georgia Cavalry. The book is informative and well documented, although it has -- even though the author admits it -- a pro-southern bias. The most enthralling part of the book is its coverage of the constant battling and skirmishing of the 5th Georgia and the Confederate cav. with the hugh Union army under Gen. William T. Sherman as he cuts and burns his way through Georgia and the Carolinas. Though out numbered, the Rebel troopers are superior to their Union cavalry counterparts. Not until after Atlanta falls and the breadbasket of the Confederacy is spent does the Federal cavalry compare to the Confederate horsemen. By then, however, the Rebel army is ragged, hungry and ill equipped -- often out numbered three, four or five to one. It is amazing that they accomplished what they did. In all the book is an enjoyable read -- even for a Yankee!

A Must Read
I picked this up recently for several reasons. I am researching my own Confederate cavalry ancestors and was interested in the author's approach of using first person accounts to tell this unit's story. The author states in the Introduction that this book should not be considered a full history of the unit but as "a primer." He accomplishes this perfectly. Through his use of letters, I was able to "see" through the eyes of the brave men of the 5th GA Cavalry. I now feel even closer to my ancestors who fought on both sides of the War Between the States. This work should be read by anyone seeking to better understand what it was like to ride "in the saddle" for extended periods and under situations that would try the bravest soul. I found his chapter on the Union prison camp, Camp Chase Ohio, especially poignant.

An Atlanta Reviewer
I read this book in one evening, eventhough I am not a Civil War buff. My husband left this in our den and I picked it up and was enthralled. Many of the soldier's stories were touching and interesting, particularly since they fought in and around where I live -- Atlanta. Some of these men and boys suffered horribly for their beliefs (whether right or wrong) you have to admire them. In addition, foot notes are given to help explain military terminology. I recommend this book; it is an excellent window into those horrible days of war that shaped our nation, healed its wounds, opened other wounds, and brought us into the 20th century
