The Colony of Georgia (The Library of the Thirteen Colonies and the Lost Colony)

An excellent introduction to the history of Colonial Georgia
My knowledge about the state of Georgia basically comes down to the facts that it was settled by criminals, Sherman marched through the state to the sea during the Civil War, and Jimmy Carter was governor when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record. This explains in part why I found Brooke Coleman's small volume on "The Colony of Georgia" to be the most informative of The Library of the Thirteen Colonies and The Lost Colony series I have read to date (I worked south from Roanoke and will now go back and head north). I was fascinated to learn that Georgia was settled as a result of a charter granted by King Georgia II, the colony's namesake, to James Oglethorpe, who wanted to enact Sir Robert Montgomery's utopian ideal of have debtors go to the New World to start a new life rather than rotting in debtors prison. Oglethorpe enacted laws against owning slaves and buying or selling liquor. Of course, this grand experiment failed, but this is certainly more detail about the colony of Georgia than I ever came across in my American History textbooks. I also liked how Coleman took pains to establish that before colonial times the area we now call Georgia was home to the Cherokee and Creek Indians before the first colonists arrived from Spain in the 1500s, followed by the French and English in the 1600s and 1700s. Coleman also provides a concise description of how the agriculture of the English colony evolved into the plantation system. "The Colony of Georgia" has full page illustrations of mostly historic pictures, with a paragraph of simple text of the facing page. Students always learn about the colonies at Jamestown and Plymouth, so I appreciate the goal of this series to provide basic information about each of the original colonies. I wish all of them provided as much new information to their young readers as this particular volume succeeds in doing.

Colorado's Great Gardens: Plains, Mountains & Plateaus

Great ideas for our gardens, great gift book
This book features photos of gorgeous Colorado gardens and interesting information about how each gardener planned, prepared, planted, etc. their garden. It has given me many ideas for my own flower garden, and it would make an ideal gift for any Colorado gardener -- or for anyone who is interested in how our gardening is different from other parts of the country.

From the front cover: "[The book] features seventy-two gardens singled out for their beauty and adherence to plants indicative of their area. ...Proctor's striking images depict the serenity and charm inherent in each garden...Geargia Garnsey, a Denver-based writer, provides lively profiles of each garden and the gardener who tends it."

rich and engaging book
This book tells the story of Dalton, Georgia, and how the textile mill led to its development. It is a very detailed look at the townspeople and their struggles throughout a century. It provides a unique and perceptive view of the South's economic and social transformation beginning during the aftermath of the Civil War and continuing with the rise of technology into the Reagan years.

A must for a lawyer working in Georgia!
This little book,i.e., Criminal Offenses and Defenses in Georgia/With 1998 Supplement by Kurtz , is quite usefull for lawyers and law students studying in Georgia. The book is quite usefull and is filled with interesting information, e.g., what is considered to be asault . However, I must warn the person whom is not used to utlizing refernce works since it can be seen as a bit tricky to maneuver; and the price can be seen as quite an obstacle since it costs nearly 120 dollars.

Death and the Ice Box: A Trudy Roundtree Mystery

cozy police procedural
Ogeechee, Georgia with its population of 3,412 is just right for Trudy Roundtree who returned home after the death of her husband. She is the only female police officer in Ogeechee. She visits friends clearing a dump when an old icebox flies open and the body of a dead woman is found stuffed inside.

The autopsy shows that a blow to the head murdered the victim at least twenty years ago. Trudy has no idea of the identity of the woman but as she looks at back issues of the Ogeechee Beacon she notices that in 1969 a Donnie Burkhalton died in an automobile accident. She later discovers that his fiancée dumped him and disappeared on the same day. Dental records show that Donnie's fiancée is the victim. Although the case is over three decades old, Trudy is determined to see justice done by catching a killer.

DEATH AND THE ICEBOX is a cozy police procedural that gives an accurate depiction of what life is like in a small southern town. The heroine is independent, upbeat and believes police work is her calling. The mystery itself is complex and intricately woven into the story line and there is a plethora of suspects but the stumbling block in figuring out who the killer is comes down to motive. Nobody, at least on the surface, had any reason to see the woman dead. So Trudy has to delve deeper and recreate events that happened years ago. Using people's unreliable memories, Linda Berry knows how to keep her readers' interested so that they finish the book in one sitting.

Modern Day Shakespeare
As an alumni of the University of Georgia with a BA in English, if there is one thing I know how to do, its how to read. And I have to say that I enjoyed reading this work of genius better than just about anything I have picked up in my entire life. Mark Schlabach is the modern day Shakespeare of sports writing. He combines Edgar Allen Poe's sense of mystery with Mark Twain's unique perspective, and then ties it all together with John Steinbeck's multiple levels of depth and message. In today's world of over-the-top reality entertainment, Mr. Schlabach's keen eye brings us back to the greatest reality entertainment ever invented - football.
I also have a long history of reading magazines where the focus is the photography. This endeavor has always been less academic and more individual (so to speak). Regardless, as someone who appreciates photography, this book has great pictures.
Finally, my favorite chapter was the one that focused on Tubby. Tubby clearly represents a combination Old Yeller's and Hairy the Dawg's best attributes. When he takes the field during the Kentucky game to inspire the Dawg Nation, I almost cried. Mark Schlabach is a great writer, the AJC is a great newspaper, Tubby is a great dog, and Tattletales is a great establishment.
