Love is a Beautiful Thing
My review of this book comes from a different perspective because I was the designer. I found this book to be beautifully written, and with each page that I designed, I would stop and read, and be touched by the sentiment. I think this is a wonderful book to have, in that it's perfect to thumb through when you need a pick me up, or when you're nostalgic about your relationship. It includes sentiment that everyone who has ever loved can relate to. I've designed many books, and this, by far, is my favorite to pick up time and time again.

A different sort of book about the Adirondacks
A small piece of a large region appears through a close-up lens: everything there is to know, and love, about the Whiteface-Esther ridge, thoroughly researched historically, with fascinating maps and aerial photographs. If you enjoyed Clear Pond, you'll read this with similar pleasure.

A good study of a good story
Ogilvie's treatment of Acts was easy to read and educational. He made a two thousand year old book come alive with its historical context and spiritual importance. This was the first of this series I read, and it prompted me to buy more. The style of the other authors has not measured up with his.

Her Own Best Informant
Esther Newton is an extremely gifted thinker and writer. She points up important issues for gender studies in a clear and compelling, and still quite groundbreaking, style. This book works very diligently and successfully at several levels: as a historical narrative of the trajectory of Newton's life and career; as a theoretical discourse which is situated specifically by her historical narrative; as a critique of and a profound contribution to her profession, anthropology; as a powerful argument for the inevitable relationship between theory and history; as a courageous and provocative piece of scholarship.
Many of these essays were written early in the second wave of feminism, so the issues they engage point up the degree to which Newton has been ahead of her time. That she narrativizes the essays as the historical life of an academic (herself) attests to the fact that she is still ahead of her time: everything-- political, academic, social, sexual--is lived. There are no categories which happen outside of the people who make them.
Because of Newton's autobiographical, comfortable style, it should be noted that the book, although clearly academic, is a fairly easy read.

Nice changes
This is the follow on to Prof. Raizen's Modern Hebrew for Beginners. Like the first book, it uses reading exercises, videos, verb practices from the Web. However, she's made some changes that make the book easier to use. Vocabularly lists are now in alef-bet order. Units start with a reading selection and reading comprehension questions where before it could have been either the reading selection or a video.
I liked the beginners book and I think I'm going to like this second book even better.
