Christ Is in Our Midst: Letters from a Russian Monk

True Christian Love
The letters of people 'in the world' are full of the boundless love of an elder, who lived his life in Russia and Finland in the Valaam Monasteries. Skhemaigumen John had a vast correspondence that was collected in the fifties by a small group of people.

Here is a short extract form the book:

In our Monastery life goes silently on although the brothers are quite old, just like in an old peoples home, one older than the other. If I am alive in July I will be 79 - a respectable age, and I am ready to enter eternity. I thank God that I have lived to such an old age and that he has allowed me, a sinner, to live all my life in a monastery. I have not had to experience the worldly life, full of deceit, vainglory, lies and pride. Can anyone amidst these sins feel peace and tranquillity in their souls? Surely not."

A readable and relevant introduction to these Biblical books
Roberts has provided a valuable service to pastor and student alike. He addresses the thornier problems of Ezra and Nehemiah; all the while using them as a practical text for training Christian leaders. Perhaps most helpful is his ability to demonstrate the practical relevance (and rich, implied spirituality) of the seemingly non-theistic Biblical book of Esther.

An Excellent Resource for Neuropsych Clinicians
This is an excellent source for beginning and advanced clinicians. The descriptions of the tests and test administration are concise and easy to understand. In addition, the norms for each test are included. The tests are grouped by the what specific areas they measure (i.e., Intelligence, Achievement, Memory, and Sensory and Motor areas). Since this text covers a wide array of tests, it is well worth the investment.

The crossing fee: a story of life in Liberia
Published in Unknown Binding by Gollancz ()

A loving look at a way of life that has past
Unusual for books about Africa in its time period, this book gives an open-hearted look at life for the Mano people in Liberia before the Second World War. It also shows how that way of life, certainly gone today, was disappearing twenty years after the author's original visit. Unusual for books of this sort, Ms. Dendel shares little about herself and writes instead about the people with whom she becomes friends. She does not show even unspoken attitudes of white supremacy, but instead what she, and all of us, could learn from the lives and attitudes of these people. A lot of the negatives of the lives of the people she describes, particularly relating to the role of women in traditional society, are not mentioned, but this book is not a scholarly treatise, just a discussion of the author's experiences. For anyone interested in indigenous African culture, this out-of-print book is worth finding.

Celtic Praise in Coptic Spirituality
Thirty readings from Celtic tradition:
These celestial praises, thirty of them, drew my attention to a fameous adaptation in the book of Proverbs;" Have I not written for you thirty sayings of admonition and knowledge?" Prov. 22:20 The original Amenmope contained thirty 'houses' or chapters(footnote of the Harper Collins Study Bible, NRSV).
In addition Allchin and Esther de Waal brought us with these sixty passages arranged in pairs, inspiring prayers and praises seventeen beautiful illustration from Carmina Cadelica illustrative notes of words.

Journey without end:
"Thy beauty will be ever new , ever freshly kindling a fire, through all the ages of eternity, evermore without fail; a fervent flame without end." Chapter(XXVIII)
This delightfully inspiring book of Celtic spiritual heritage very gracefully presented as a toast in honour of which the reader can raise his glass and drink extacts from Irish, scottish, and Welsh meditation.

Adorable sacred writings:

These 30 Gaelic praises of Irish or Scottish tradition on the left hand page are paired with 30 text of Welsh tradition on the right hand page. In the same way* that Copts chant their praise and psalms, in 'quarters' from two Choirs, North and South. I hope you enjoy this slim but penetrating daily companion, which could be your introduction to the daily reading series, and de Waal's meditation garden.

* for Coptic influence on Celtic tradition read;coptic missionary enterprise , in History of Eastern Christianity, by Aziz S. Atiya, U . of Notre dame Press.

Dance, Sing, and Listen Series

The only way to get these wonderful albums????
If you're an educator or parent looking for good, imaginative stuff for your kids, this is it. If you're a Bruce Haack fan looking for the only way to get these long gone albums, then you have come to the right place! there are 6 tapes in all: Dance Sing and Listen (Vol 1-3), Dance to the Music, The Way Out Record (cassette), and the Electronic Cassette. I don't say "Record" on this one because it is different than the original Electronic Record. This version was rerecorded later on updated equipment. It's still good, but hopefully the originals are available on the Bruce Haack website (some are on the Listen, Compute, Rock Home compilation Cd as well.) All of these albums are absolutley amazing. The Dance Sing and Listen's are good, with lots of stories and songs. The really "electronic" phase begins with the Way Out Record, continues on the Electronic Record, and I think reaches it's most modern sounding peak on Dance To the Music. These last 3 alone are worth the price of admission, so if you need to own whatever Bruce Haack stuff you can get your hands on, then get dancin and singin and listenin and order this as quick as you can! Co Co the Coconut would want you to!
