great
this is a great book on hieroglyphs for children. but if you are older and just beginning to learn this is also a great book for you. but if you have already been studing hieroglyphs this is not the book for you. but if you have children this is a book you will want to buy

Simple introduction to hieroglyphs.
I liked this book because it can be used with a wide age range of children. The introductory rhyme and ABC rhymes on each page are especially suited to younger children, while the smaller text at the bottom of the page gives more information for older children. For example, the page for 'R' says 'R is for rabbit. Make a move - off he'll go.' At the bottom of the page you find the hieroglyph for r, an explanation of the symbol, how to write 'rabbit' in hieroglyphs, and a little more information on rabbits in Ancient Egypt. The large picture of a rabbit on the page is a reproduction of either an ancient carving or painting. After the alphabet there are several pages giving information about the history of hieroglyphs and how to write with them which would be of interest to older children as well. A stencil is also included, but you could write your own hieroglyphs by referring to the chart at the back of the book. This book is useful for introducing information on hierglyphs and Ancient Egypt to children.

Houser: The Life and Work of Catherine Bauer
Published in Hardcover by Univ of British Columbia (1999)
Authors: H. Peter Oberlander, Eva M. Newbrun, and Martin Meyerson
Amazon base price: $85.00
Average review score:

A Feminist Activist In Housing Policy
Houser is part biography and part intellectual history of the early days of idealsm and activism in the housing movement. Oberlander and Newbrun are effective in using a sensitive telling of the life of Catherine Bauer to evoke a sense in which housing policy today has lost its way despite the foundations laid by Ms.Bauer and her colleagues. This book is a must read for those interested in reviving American housing policies.

very informative, very enjoyable.
This book is not only required reading for anyone interested in public housing, but also very enjoyable as a lively account of a most attractive and courageous woman. It is fun to read about her amatory exploits on her first trip to Europe, exciting to read about her successes in public life, and sad to find out about her tragic death. I would recommend this book to anybody interested in a remarkable woman's career.

Perfect mix of a young girl's dream with measured reality.
Wonderful photos! This book is an enchanting blend of the stuff that a young girl's dreams are made of and the real work that it takes to make them come true. Anyone with a dream, young or old, can benefit by experiencing the one so marvelously shared in this book.

This book was an uplifting experience for a grandmother.
Jane Feldman has captured the essence of a young girl's dream. The storyline is faithful to the development of a dream. The photographs are truly beautiful. This is Central Park as we wish it would be. I am eagerly awaiting the publication of "I am a Rider". Future dreams may be "I am" an astronaut, a teacher, even a volunteer. The list is endless, and I expect to hear and see more of Jane Feldman.

Lucy's Recipes for Mountain Living

Authentic Mountain Flavor
Eva McCall has done it again, this time with the help of her sister. Together, they have recorded their memories of Grandmother Lucy Carpenter, whose story is told in Eva's "Edge of Heaven" and "Children of the Mountain."
"Lucy's Recipes" is not a cookbook per se; it's much better! The Carpenter sisters recall how Lucy fed and took care of her family the mountain way. You'll go with Lucy to hunt ginseng, sit at her table and enjoy roasted bear, and wonder 'til noon what's in your lunch pail.
A delicious collection of vignettes!...

Mmmm Good!
Need a recipe for Baked Black Bear? How 'bout Cathead Biscuits? Need to know what to with the hog once it's slaughtered or what to fix the kids for a sweet treat?

Readers who fell in love with Lucy Davenport Carpenter and her struggles on Carpenter Mountain will delight in the new book, Lucy's Recipes for Mountain Living, by Edge of Heaven and Children of the Mountain author Eva McCall and her cousin, Emma Edsall.

Feeding a family of seventeen would be a huge chore even in today's modern world of packaged, frozen and fast food meals. Imagine trying to do it in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the nearest grocery store was fifteen miles away!

McCall and Edsall capture what feeding a small army three meals in the supposedly good old days. While none of the recipes are really recipes and haven't been kitchen nor taste tested, although the authors invite reader to give 'em a whirl, the book is a fun way to learn how good we have it in 2002!

McCall and Edsall provide memories of their Granny Lucy before the start of each of the ten sections that are both heart-warming and funny.

Lucy's Recipes for Mountain Living would be a great gift for a tween or young adult reader. Let them see how hard life was in the hills of North Carolina and they won't grouse so much next time there's a line at the drive-thru. Adult readers will delight that we don't have to work as hard as poor Lucy did just to fill the kids' bellies.

Magic Flutes
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (1984)
Author: Eva Ibbotson
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $30.00

Ibbotson is an unkown delight
I discovered Ibbotson two years ago when I read her latest book, A Song For Summer. Magic Flutes is not her best book, but it definitely holds it's own. She mixes great characters, settings and opera to create a story that can be read over and over. The heroine, an impoverished princess, is enchanting. But I think my favorite characters are the opera crew. Who can help but love Boris and his yogurt culture he named the Mother. Ibbotson's books are hard to find, but well worth the search.

A poignant, lovely story!
Ibbotson has a marvelous understanding of music, art, medicine, history, and science. I constantly want to look things up in the encyclopedia to see if she has her information correct - and she does! This is a cinderella story with a multitude of moments that touch the heart.

This book is great!
I liked reading about what the dinosaur did during the day. The story was interesting. I learned a lot of things, and the pictures are really pretty. This was a new dinosaur for me. I liked the section at the end that told about how the fossils were discovered in China. I liked every bit of it.

Another great book
Loved the way the author drew the reader into the story through the eyes of the Sinosauropteryx, Layah. The story was well developed and action packed.

Natural Healing for Schizophrenia & Other Common Mental Disorders: And Other Common Mental Disorders

The Best I've Found
For information on treating schizophrenia with alternative medicine, this book has been most helpful. Written in very clear terms, understandable by persons with little, or no, medical training. Explains the main "bio-types" of those who suffer from schizophrenia, and what can be done to correct the imbalance/s.
Few practitioners are willing and able to treat schizophenia by means of balancing the chemistry of the brain with natural supplements. This book can guide both the practioner and patient in the quest for a successful alternative treatment of mental illness. It explains various deficiencies that may cause particular symptoms, which sources of supplements help most, which blood tests are useful, etc. This book has helped my son, who was psychotic -- in and out of hospitals -- to successfully wean off almost all medication.
He continues to improve, and hopes to be drug free soon.

LIFE ALTERING INFORMATION
Concise to the point. Simple to understand and to apply. Infomation that can change your life! This book has been long over due.It is written by the best in thier field. Dont miss the chance to read this book.If not for yourself than do it for someone else and pass it on, its to valuable to be ignored.

A very good story written with heart and soul.
I enjoyed reading this book and found that I could not put it down. I have shared it with many friends who have enjoyed reading the book as well.
The story is written with heartwarming strength and it touched me deeply. Thank You Eva....

This is one of the best books I've ever read
This story touches your heart when you read it. In parts of the book you just think. Why did this happen to these people. This is a very good story because you're learning about history and there's a story behind it. I recomend it strongly.
