Not Just a Witch is not Just for Children
Eva Ibbotson's delightful humor combined with Prunella Scales's flawless reading makes this audio book a winner. Two witches, lifelong friends, have a falling out when they appear at a party wearing identical (live) snake hats. They move away from one another and both are courted by an evil man who plans to use their powers to become rich. The plot is fast moving and funny, but it is the many humorous touches that make this story a hit with adult listeners as well as children. Who can resist a balloon inflated by politicians' hot air -- education ministers claiming that more testing will improve education, and an atomic energy minister claiming that nuclear waste is good for fish! Scales reads as if she believes every word so listeners soon forget there is a narrator between them and enter fully into the story. Great listening for ages eight and up.

bones be good
when Eva Snead researches a topic she does it thoroughly. this work is a comprehensive examination of BOTH convential/ allopathic and alternative/ natural approaches to prevention and treatment.Unlike many other authors of wholistic bent she gives credit to orthodox physicians and scientists when due and she also challenges some accepted 90's "natural" hype when it isn't backed up by good research or might pose a risk for the consumer. It is a very technical disussion but just when it might get too dry eva provides some witism for which she is famous. And she always makes sure to translate medicalese into laymans language for the reader's benefit. There is a wonderful explanation of chelation therapy, another of cellular electron bond/ionization/free radical theory. She handles diet and other environmental contributors to bone health. 27 pages of references from peer review publications and a terrific glossary of 15 pages. And an encouraging summary that explains that this scourge of osteoporosis is not just treatable but even reversible.

Plato's Sophist: The Professor of Wisdom
Published in Paperback by Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Company (01 June, 1996)
Authors: Eva T. Brann, E. Salem, and Peter Kalkavage
Amazon base price: $7.95
Average review score:

Good translation
This is a very good translation for people reading the Sophist for the first time. The language is accessible (as much as it can be considering that this is one of the most difficult dialogues). Other translations of the dialogue are either written in archaic English or have other purposes. Benardete's is excellent, but it is for studying, not reading.

The introduction also gives a very nice outline of the dialogue.

Political Leaders of Latin América: ...Stroessner, Frei.....

Progeny of Light-Vanished in Darkness
Published in Paperback by NeWest Press (1996)
Author: Eva Brewster
Amazon base price: $10.95
Average review score:

An unforgettable, vividly written, candid testament
On April 20, 1943, one thousand young Jews were transported from Berlin to the extermination camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau. Only seven survived. Eva Brewster and her mother were among the survivors. Her husband and baby daughter were not. Progeny Of Light/Vanished In Darkness is the compelling story of Eva Brewster's cultured and happy youth, the tragic events that led to her capture and transport to Auschwitz, her horrific years in that infamous death camp, and the time following her internment as she began to rebuild her life Ross Brewster, a young British intelligence officer. Progeny Of Light/Vanished In Darkness is an unforgettable, vividly written, candid testament to the unspeakable horror of the Third Reich campaign to exterminate whole populations of "undesirables", as well as a welcome addition to the growing library of Holocaust literature and simple testament to the endurance, sacrifice, and resilience of the human spirit.

I love this book!
I've been a homeschooling mom for over 6 years now. After using Concerned Communication's A Reason For Writing since the beginning, we stumble on A Reason For Spelling this year. I was tired of "boring" spelling curriculumns, so figured we'd spend the extra $$$ and give this a try. Well, we ALL love it (we're using levels A, C and E for our 1st, 3rd and 5th graders). There is a lot of activities packed into these pages, and you can pretty much pick and choose how much of it you want to do. There are reproducibles in the teachers manuals of additional activities. I'm thinking of using it again next year with all the activities, and I should be able to turn it into our full Language Arts program. One word of warning, DON'T try to use this without the teachers manual, you will be LOST! I find the teacher's manual invaluable!

From a Professor of Religious Studies, SDUC, to the author
Your account of your journey is very moving - and the visits to Greek and Cretan sites stirred up so many memories of my times in those places, including the knowledge that the "official" (Evans) version of Knossos was missing a deeper truth. I like so much the simple naturalness of your account - its everydayness - which makes your naming of the sacred dimensions come across as true and compelling...

With appreciation, Christine D.
