Excellent
When I moved to Mexico one year ago to run a division for my company, I read many books -- this one is the best!

It clearly outlines differing cultural norms and pitfalls.

I did feel some of the "case study" scenarios were a bit contrived and awkward, but this book nails the central issues facing American managers in Mexico.

Mexico can be a great place to work and live, particularly if you are sensitive to the business culture and its nuances.

Experience is the only true teacher, but this book makes the lessons far less painful.

Enjoy!

A delightful read!
A collection of Xi Xi's short fiction regarding life in the untamed and fascinating Hong Kong of the 1980s. This work puts you squarely in the middle of Hong Kong during negotiations between the British & Chinese government. In the first half of the 1980's, the Chinese and British governments negotiated Hong Kong's future, inducing fierce soul-searching and intimate scrutiny of society and the general population.

Xi Xi skillfully shows us by contrast and in-depth perception the real and imagined, the new and the ancient, the infringement of Western culture and local traditions; and she has created stupefying narratives telling of the expectations, dreams, desires, hostility and apprehension that the Hong Kong citizens found themselves inextricably snarled in during this climactic time in their history.

Xi Xi has used her text in conjunction with the pictures of Rene Magritte. In doing so, she has blended an interpretation of images Belonging to modern Western tradition with a uniquely contemporary Hong Kong interpretation.

Most other books written posturing and speculating about the handover will be long forgotten after the event occurs. The lovely and particular way with which Xi Xi has written her work will guarantee that it remains a valuable resource in defining the history of Hong Kong for decades to come. Leslie Blanchard

Are they deceiving the Ton or themselves?
Samantha is in quite a tangle. Her father is dead and her gambling rogue of an uncle is running their estate into the ground with his carefree spending and losses at the tables. Sam tries to warn her uncle that they are on the brink of ruination, but he refuses to listen to his ward. Their only hope is the continued success of their famous stables. But, to Samantha's horror, she finds out that her uncle has recently bet the pick of their stables and lost. If the winner makes the obvious choice and takes their famous stallion, Black Knight, then the family will lose almost all of their income.

Samantha is determined to hate the handsome lord who has come to take their livelihood, but he turns out to be nothing like she expected. He is a gallant gentleman...and he actually prefers Sam to her stunningly beautiful sister, Emily. When he offers to let Sam keep Black Knight in exchange for coming to London and keeping the matchmaking mamas off his back by pretending to be his soon to be announced fiancee, it seems to good to be true. And it is...because Sam has done the most foolish thing imagineable. She has fallen in love!

A fine collection of recipes from the Middle East
OK, I admit. I'm biased. I illustrated the book and appended some annotations to the artworks. Still, I have prepared dishes from the book and have had the pleasure of eating many others. How to review a cookbook? Well, the recipes produce wonderful meals and the illustrations are SUPERB; not your typical halved heads of red cabbage, but imaginative culturally related imagery. I took some pains in researching my chosen images and I think any home kitchen chef will be able to appreciate the additional dimension contributed by the illustrations.

intriguing mystery, subtle psychological portrait
A frumpy middle-aged woman appears at a small town hotel with a suitcase full of cash and no memories. The next two hundred pages are her and you together trying to figure out who she was and who she wants to be. The book is so gentle and subtle reminding one of Anita Brookner. The voice is mesmerizing. The story complusory reading.

R. Yahuda Halavi pomes brought me to tears
The Rabbi's words left me in tears. From his sole jerling prayes of peantice to his longing for Jresulm. It dosnt read like a 12 centery work eather- for the most part it's comptly undsatadable.

The only draw back is that seavel of his reluouse pomes are a bit esotric- as would be exaped by a 12 centery Spaish Rabbi, and as far as I can tell this coltaion is a enligh tranlation of a Greaman coppay from the Orailal Hebrew. (I think the oranail was in hebrew). Some of the vearse - line ogantion seems a bit odd;and some pomes are better then others.

But even with this factored in it's a encadable coations from one of Jewdism most skilled poets/rabbi/phlospers. Every bit as relvent now as they were 800 years ago. Very few books out there can tuch your sole like R. Halevi's poetery.Secntly very few are as humaman.

One finle note however- becaful looking for the or any other book by him. Both Yahudau and Halevi are very coman names amongew the Jewish commity- and there's no standerized speeling. (Not in Enlisgh anyway.) The Librayain only found this book after much seacrching and cross reffranceing. To make matters worce one of the founding members of the fraild of Modern Anthopgy caryies the same name.

In addtion some of the publishers footnotes were quite helpful.

A witty and heartfelt depiction of small town life.
No-Account Angels is a soulful account of small town life, one surprisingly filled with extraordinary events.

This book not only journeyed with me on many an airplane ride, in which I found myself most reluctant to put it away, but also captivated my interest into the wee hours of the morning on more than one occasion.

Never before have I felt so connected with an author. It was as if I was reading about myself...not so much in the events of her life, but in her thoughts and feelings throughout these events. Like the author, I laughed and cried when reading this earnest portrayal of life in a small Illinois town. We possess the power to change our own lives...perhaps with a little help and protection of a guardian angel.
