MacRoeconomic Issues Today

Author: Robert B. Carson
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Great book to learn the issues...
I used many of Dr. Carson's books in college, and found them to be great for getting a good understanding of the issues. He usually had an overview the issues and both sides of the argument explained. I threw out alot of my college textbooks but kept all of his books. Only issue is the argments in the book may become dated so try to get the latest editions.

The Magistrates of the Roman Republic: 509 B.C.-100 B.C. (American Philological Association Monograph Series, No 15)
Published in Hardcover by American Philological Association (1986)
Author: T. Robert S. Broughton
Amazon base price: $74.00

A must have for any student of the Roman Republic
This is one of those extremely valuable resources that one must have if they want an indepth resource of magistrates that held any office within the cursus honorum and any of the tribunal positions. It provides detailed information on the official that held office, or those magistrates whose imperium was extended and the reasons behind the extension or why a dictator was elected at a certain time. There are two volumes the other is from 99 BC to 31 BC and it is just as needed as this one. I cannot stress the importance of having this two volume set in ones collection, especially if you are doing any research on the Roman res publica. I would strongly recommend this book to any student of any grade level as it is fairly easy to navigate through and find the information for the time you are looking for.

Martin B-57 Canberra: The Complete Record
I found this book to be very exciting. I grew up as a child of an Air Force officer and enjoyed the life of being around aircraft, uniforms and all that goes with this life. I found the book to be very knowledgeable and informative. It is accurate and has many subjects that at the time were not allowed to be discussed openly (EX:The Patricia Lynn). I discovered this book by chance (I was looking for a birthday gift for my father)and was very pleased and surprised that it had a photograph of my father, who also was not aware of this book or of him being in the book. My father talks about alot of the history in this book and shares alot of the stories of the people he knows and of certain events. To the author, thank you for writing and taking the time to reware these men and publish what alot of people did and still do. I also find this book to be a good example of what the Air Force offered and offer today.

a MUST for SERIOUS (and LUCID) researchers
(sorry for my poor english, I'm French-Canadian)

As I entitled this review, this is a must for every serious and lucid social scientist (by the way, to many domains of research as well). In the early years of the twentieth century, prominent psychologists such as Allport, Lewin or Murray advocated that research should concentrate on the individuals rather than on the variables. Contemporary scholars such as Block, Cairns, and Magnusson continue to try to convince the scientifc community of the necessity to undertake research based on the holistic, interactionist, and person-centered perspective. I read a lot peer-reviewed scientific communication, and as I see it, researchers continue te be reluctant in adopting a person-centered perspective in their research (Jack Block (2000) proposed a number of reasons for that) ...

Here at amazon, I have read a number of reviews about controversial books on topics such as intelligence, personality, adjustment problems, behavioral genetics, etc. ... But do you know that nearly the totality of the results we dispose to date in social sciences are based on variable-centered studies ... thus, we only know about the "average person" ... Before doing interminable debates about the average individual, we should make more research that help us to understand the person we want to understand ... after that, we could go on with great (and exciting) debate about controversial issues in psychology and other social sciences. Do you know that the statistical parameters on which many debates are based (the parameters of the "average person" in a given sample) often do not apply to any of the real persons in your sample ... think about that ...

By the way, modern statistical methods are very powerful tools and the person-centered analyses will not answer to all the quesstion we can have ...

If you are a researcher in social sicence, and particularly if you are a student (undergraduate or graduate) planning to make a career in research, please, please, read that book !

Miasma: Pollution and Purification in Early Greek Religion
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (1988)
Author: Robert B. Parker
Amazon base price: $85.00
Average review score:

Miasma -- Not for the Faint of Heart
"Miasma" (or me-ahz-MAH' as the ancients would say it, we think) is a subject and a book that will be of most interest to scholars of ancient Greek culture, religion and language, as well as to students of comparative languages and literatures. It is a dense but well-written text by Parker, an important and recognized scholar. Organized conceptually, the book begins with an introduction to related and apparently overlapping terms: miasma, agos, enages, katharsos, hosios, hagnos, and the like. These terms can be examined in terms of how they are thought to relate to birth/death rituals, lustrations, the shedding of blood, purification of holy sites, etc. This would be quite enough but Parker's erudition ups the book's score. He analyzes each concept and situation in terms of the various genres of his sources and in terms of the time periods in which tehy were written. These are the materials from which we have derived our notion of daily life in ancient Greece, and Parker is well-versed in the entire canon of Greek dramas, philosophy, history, cult records, oratory, mythology, and on and on. The author's observations and conclusions are surprising and very valuable not only because of his close and careful of the citations that illuminate his theories, but because the care taken itself reminds us of the danger of making broad assumptions based on a narrow review of primary sources. This is a major text in the field of Greek religion and it's been a long time coming. I wish he'd put forth his own hypotheses at the beginning of each section, which would make note-taking a lot easier, but it would deprive the reader of the carefully-reasoned arguments that lead him -- and us -- to his conclusions. Kudos.

Mice, All About Them

Used price: $4.72
Collectible price: $10.54

cute and informative!
This is a wonderful book and would be a great help to anyone who wants to know more about mice. The book is full of fantastic black and white photos. My favorite are the pics that show how fast baby mice grow- they are shown at 1 day, 7 days, 13 days, and 26 days old. The text of the book is simple enough for a kid to understand (and would be a great help with a mice-related science project or paper!) and it's pretty comprehensive- it really does tell all about them.

Microprocessors: A Programmers View (Computing That Works Series)
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (1990)
Authors: Robert B.K. Dewar and M. Smosna
Amazon base price: $40.00
Used price: $19.95
Average review score:

Excellent Coverage
This is an excellent book. It is a tad old, but the material hasn't really become dated. It contains what is probably the most condensed information on assembly programming I've seen. (If you're a good programmer and already know assembly for one processor, you could probably learn the assembly language of all the architectures covered in this book, from the book.) The writing isn't at all stuffy, and the footnotes are frequently a good laugh.
