The Ingenious Machine of Nature Four Centuries of Art and
The National Gallery of Canada has outdone itself in every way. Kudos to Cazort, Kornell, and Roberts for putting together an astounding book about anatomy in art, a book that is easily comprehensible and not overly bearing. The Drawings and prints reproduced in the book are amazing themselves. The book traces the development of anatomy through the ages. Tough to find a comparable book.

A worthy and timely book
At a time when the measurement profession has become very advanced and technical in orientation, the introduction of this book has come to address an urgent need or should I say filled a yearning gap. In particular the new edition with topics on Rasch model, generalizability theory is most welcome. In a sentence, the new book is special and uncommon by putting together both the theory and practice of test development. For this reason, it is one in its own class.

Introduction to Christian Belief: A Contemporary Look at the Basics of Faith
Published in Paperback by Twenty-Third Publications (1996)
Author: Robert B. Sheard
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $6.99

Outstanding view of Christianity for an informed reader
Like many Christians, I grew up with a primitive and literal understanding of scripture and the message of Christianity. As one matures in one's faith, and one tries to reconcile what one believes with what contemporary knowledge has revealed, this book is an outstanding bridge to a mature faith. This book is a challange to many traditional thoughts, but I believe it is an enlightened and sincere work on a subject important to all modern and informed readers of today's Christian literature.

Bilingual and Bicultural
This is a beautiful and colorful re-telling of the Japanese folktale, Issunboshi, in English.

The oni, monsters in the story are pretty scary-looking, but my five- and seven-year-olds find the story exciting. The costumes and setting are from ancient Japan (Heian period,) and thus show another kind of kimono than that we often associate with Japanese tradition. The princess wears the twelve-layer kimono, like Masako-sama wore when she married the present Crown Prince of Japan. They also enjoy how he and his elderly parents cope with his minute size -- the use of a needle for a sword, and a bowl for a boat, capture their imagination. And they enjoy it all the more, because they`re familiar with the Japanese nursery song, included with translation at the back of the book, along with some additional illustrated information on ancient Japanese things.

John Deere Model B Restoration Guide (Motorbooks International Authentic Restoration Guides)

Information for beginners and for experienced restorers.
Who would have thought that someone would write a book about the exact tractor model that I chose to collect? Why did author Pripps write about this particular tractor? The way he explains it, the first reason is, it's a John Deere! Secondly, it is the perfect size, not too big to handle, but not too small to do some useful work. Third, because there were enough of them built so that parts are still common and affordable. Finally, because there were enough changes and variations over the seventeen year production run that there is something interesting for beginner and expert alike. This is where the book excels; the keyword in the title is "guide". Pripps takes you through the history of the development of the Model B. You not only learn where and when the parts were changed and improved, but also WHY. It's not a "how to do it" book, it tells WHAT you need to do, what's correct, what's incorrect, and what to watch out for. You'll find out how to do an accurate restoration. The entire book is illustrated with clear vintage photographs, excellent shots of recent restorations, and diagrams from actual John Deere manuals from the Model B era. I have been collecting model B's since 1990 and I found the book to be very useful.

Dewey in Context
There are many Dewey biographies, and so finding the right one can be difficult. I particularly like the Westbrook biography, because it places Dewey's thought squarely within the context of his life and times - an approach Dewey himself would have commended. For those of you who are not familiar with Dewey, philosopher of Democracy and Education, have no fear. Although he was a very prolific writer, Westbrook provides the reader with a good introduction to all of Dewey's major works - in itself a great boon for those of us trying to pick and choose select works from the 44-volume beast. Lastly, Westbrook also illuminates much of the history surrounding Dewey's life: including the Sociology Movement of late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Progressive Era, the Great Depression, and both World Wars. A wonderful book about America's most famous philosopher.
