An Incredible Book!
With all the books published on the Civil War, it's hard to
find something NEW, but this book brings to light a collection of soldiers' letters unpublished since the Civil War. Not only are the letters themselves new and fresh to
Civil War scholars and enthusiasts, but Bill Styple has done
an excellent job of editing them. The Civil War is presented
in a new light. One of the best Civil War books in many years; if you like to read about the Civil War, buy this book!

History Comes Alive
This book is a great addition to the serious Civil War reader's library. Being able to read the battle descriptions, thoughts and feelings of those who actually participated in the war is always enlightening, bringing the reader a different reality than that of the historian who writes about the Civil War with the benefit of hindsight and without the benefit of personal experience. The compilation of letters in this book - in chronological and logical order - brings alive the crucial battles in the Eastern theatre of the Civil War. The only slight deficiency is that very few letters from the Eastern soldiers fighting in Western armies are included. My suggestion: have this book at hand and read what the soldiers had to say about a specific event or battle immediately after reading narrative descriptions of the same event or battle by today's leading historians, for a complete view. Overall, a wonderful book and highly recommendable to the "advanced" Civil War reader.

Big Statistics= Great Small Talk
This book is not a good read- it an excellent calender or mantra. Flip to any page look at the graph, read the explanatory paragraph and then sit back and absorb it. Tuck it away into that space of your brain that you pull out at social events and e-mail one liners, "Did you know that there are 512 Billionares while one in every four people lives off of 1$ a day?" This book does not preach, it just hits you over the head with statistics and easy to understand graphs. If you have ever wondered how countries and people within countries compare to the rest of the world then keep this on your coffee table and EAT IT UP with your coffee. Everything from Literacy Rates to Food to Labor Distribution is in this "book", making it a mini-crash course in World Health, Economics, Politics and Social Change all at once.

Clear, big font, has details if you want them, and half the book is nothin' but pictures.

So well written...
Robert Gurval is a great writer. In a field of dry style and stale ideas, Dr. Gurval is a welcome change. If this book is in your field, you really should read it. His book is well organized, complete, convincing and stimulating.

Norman's other side
Everybody is familiar with Norman Rockwell's paintings holding up a mirror to Middle America so it is not surprising that plenty of companies used his work to sell their products. This large, well designed and printed book has over two hundred color images of his commercial work. Each company has their logo and a brief history to accompany the paintings.

Norman was not responsible for how his work was used in the ads so his efforts on occaision get ruined by messy design, just have a look at the 1936 Cream of Kentucky bourbon ad on page 47. Generally though the advertisers wisely let his paintings do the job they paid him for.

The most surprising work to me were his paintings of children used on Kellogg's Corn Flakes boxes in the mid-fifties, they even carried his signature. I wonder how much a good condition box is worth now?

This is most likely the only book of his commercial work available so it worth adding to your Rockwell library.

mad man/soothsayer
I have not yet seen this particular book, yet I give this man's work the deserved stars above from what I have seen about and around. He brought to me the same feelings that Abdul Mati Klarwein's work did when I first saw it. This man and Walton Ford are sending a message in different ways yet show us our fallible nature and perhaps prophecy some things to come. A good night would involve reading D. Quinn's Ishmael and perusing Rockman's images...

Definitive, if Rough Sledding for Novices
Wow. Simply, wow. I have spent many years waiting for someone to write a book on this topic.

You can turn over any rock and find a book on Greek mythology, but books about the actual practice of ancient Hellenic religion are not easily found. Finally, Robert Parker fills the gap.

I will warn you that the book seems to have been written primarily for Classics scholars. If you know little or no ancient Greek history and mythology, Parker will not slow down to explain these topics to you. Similarly, it will really help if you can read a little Greek.

But if you can keep up with it, this book is incredibly rewarding.

This 1939 Classic is the best book on the subject
Stacy-Judd's 1939 classic is the best book ever on the subject of Atlantis. Stacy-Judd was a Los Angeles architect who was fascinated by the Maya and their connections to Atlantis. This is the book that has the original photo of the famous Mayan frieze of a pyramid being destroyed in a volcanic explosion and people escaping in a boat. Packed with Stacy-Judd's photos and illustrations, this book belongs in every Atlantis library!
