An excellent resource for student filmmakers
Now in a fully updated and expanded third edition, Single-Camera Video Production by Robert B. Musburger (Associate Professor, School of Communication, University of Houston), is a straightforward and highly recommended guide based upon the author's many years of practical field experience to planning, shooting, and editing video productions shot on location with essentially one camera at the filmmaker's disposal. An excellent resource for student filmmakers, Single-Camera Video Production offers a wealth of technical detail on audio signals, the scanning system, digital signal standards, camera controls, microphone types, and more, including sound advice on the social side of shooting film such as directing talent.

Dr. Bob does it again...
I have personally known Dr. Musburger since 1995 when he taught me at the University of Houston. He is indeed the person who had a great deal of influence on my life. I have read all of his books, and he brings years and years of his personal experience in radio and television to his writing. I have several books of his sitting here on my bookshelf...and they will be a part of my permanent collection. If you have an interest in learning television, then be sure to make this book a necessary addition to your library and education.

Metrics should start here
Its not your typical review that begins by praising the book's bibliography. But, then again, this isn't your typical book. The authors highlight the books that helped them most during their efforts both to create the metrics program and write the book (some 31 sources) followed by the citation of some 185 more sources listed alphabetically. This is a thoroughly researched work.

Don't confuse thorough with academic or theoretical. Included is a whole chapter on selling your metrics program to management including suggested slides and a clear step-by-step list of points to emphasize. A metrics program is as much about people as it is about software and this books is careful to support ideas on both flanks.

If you are interested in starting a metrics program or are just interested how such programs work this is an excellent place to start. I highly recommend it.

The best foundation for process improvement
This book, written in 1986, is as applicable today as it was when it was written over 14 years ago. To summarize, this book is a diary of the trials and tribulations of implementing a metrics program at Hewlett-Packard that is packed with practical advice that came from lesson's learned and a great roadmap to implementing a program of process improvement. The book addresses the difficulties and rewards of establishing an effective, viable metrics program. The authors clearly show the business and technical value that rewards the daunting effort, and guides the reader by providing an engaging saga that is easy to read packed with factual information. I was also struck by the excellent use of [the 144] charts that convey meaningful statistical information and portray data in a clear manner. Another nice surprise is the attention paid to metrics and how to effectively interpret and use them after a project transitions to production. Although I first read this book when it was originally published, it took 14 years of experience in the trenches to fully appreciate the message and content embodied within this book. I strongly recommend this book to the beginer and exerienced practitioner alike. If you have previously read this book I urge you to re-read it. Over the years I have learned and re-learned from this slim (288-page) book. I expect to spot additional gems of insight as I re-read it in the future. If you by one book on software metrics and process improvement, this is the one to get!

Sailing the Sea
This book is a story of a great adventure. A little boy start a lonesome journey to his homein Maine. When he sets sail he can only think of the legend of Captain Slocum, the firstan to set sail around the world and was neve seen again. Latr in the day his ship flips over and he is pulld aboard another ship by the hand of Captain Slocum and the whole adventure began.
I though the illustrations in this book really help the reader imagine what is going on and they tell the story so that the reader feels like they are on the sea as well. The book would be great for young as well as old who have a love for the sea. The author connects a true-life legend with a young boy and his journey home.
I would recommend this book because it tells a story of survival and hard work as well as a great adventure. ~Kellie

Review of Spray
I really enjoyed this book. The detailed pictures that filled each page made you feel like you were sailing at sea as well. Justin, a young boy who sets off in his dory, to get away from the new life he doesn't like. The strong winds work against him throwing him into the water. He is then helped by Joshua Slocum who teaches him how to work with the sailboat not against it. As Justin heads home Joshua fades away underneath the sea. He is no longer sailing the Spray, he is back on his own little dory. This story incorporates the true story of Joshua Slocum's sailing adventures with the fictional adventures of Justin. Joshua and Justin are both similar in the way that they didn't fit into their lifestyle and set out on their sailboats to escape that life. I think this book is better for older children to read because it could be confusing for younger readers. Also some of the pictures are very realistic and may not be suited for some younger readers. As an older reader I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I learned about the life and accomplishments of Joshua Slocum and got to read an interesting story about the adventures Justin encounters on his day out at sea.

Vast knowledge in very digestable form
As frightening as the volume of the book might see, it is written very well and it is very contemporary with the topics discussed in.
The book is divided in several sections with general theory and implications disussed first and with some real cases presented afterwards. Each case is usually backed with some questions to think about and to extract the essence of it. The complete book feels like being a student in the class with authors performing as teachers (as they also do sometimes).
Concepts of strategy are extremely tricky. It can hardly been negotiated if there is a strategy or if you just got to have the feeling or if there simply are people who earn 1 million US$+ a year that turn into gold everything they touch and you can't run a serious business without them. This book will help you understand that strategy exists, will teach you how to define it and set it through and how to predict the future and react on it. But as real life is, many things can happen. You get the driver's licence after you learn the basics of driving. But no one can tell after you get the licence if you will get involved into the crash and when.
Many people expect from such books that they will get a broad pavement covered with roses to walk through their careers on simply by paying some 70 US$. How naive they sound sometimes. The pen alone doesn't write a book, it is just an instrument to success, behind which stands an enormous human effort. This wonderful book is only an instrument to avoid some crashes of company in your career. If it can therefore win you a job or a mere 100 US$ raise, it has paid back heavily, don't you think?

A good book
This is an important and recent strategy book. I recommend it for MBA students and managers.

The Inspirational Faith of Dr. Bob Foster
Dr. Bob Foster persisted against one set-back after another to build hospitials and clinics in Africa. He trusted God when it seemed futile and had a vision few other people would have dared to have. In spite of great accomplishments in medical care and 'bricks and mortar' his greatest character trait was his love for people and the time he took to let people know how he cared.

An excellent record of the life of surgeon Robert Foster.
Lorry Lutz presents an intriguing account of the lives of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Foster, and their work as missionary pioneers in the Dark Continent, Africa. A testimony of the faithfulness of God in the lives of His children, "Sword & Scalpel" shows the Lord at work, guiding the hands of Dr. Foster as he performs miraculous surgeries in the bush. The book is an accurate life account of exciting events from grapples with Black Mambas, hippo hunts, Cuban invasions, and a light of hope in the darkness of the world. A must read for anyone interested in the life of missionaries, or those searching for the answers that only God can provide.

I found this book very useful in helping me pass the Excelsior / Regents College Exam. Also useful was Literacy by Cooper. Both are available along with Regents groups of reading forsale under jring 47 - used for 49. I am selling all three together. I studied these three books and did very well on the test - just last month.

A wonderfully practical reading/literacy text for teachers.
Teaching Children to Read is the finest textbook for teachers of children to come along in many years. It includes numerous practical suggestions for teaching reading and writing, while also helping one understand the basic theory and principles behind quality teaching. A must read for teachers of children from grades 1 through 8

Fine satire of philosophical/religious history
Easy-to-read yet artful novel in the traditions of Thomas Love Peacock, Dr. Johnson (Rasselas, especially) and Francois Rabelais. The story is about religious follies in the early days of Christendom, but has plenty of relevancy to our time. France was witty and relentless when it came to superstition, hypocrisy and religious megalomania but he had tremendous sympathy for humanity's spiritual yearning and the plight of the characters. I found an old copy printed in the 20's. Somebody needs to bring this fine book, and other works of Anatole France, back in print. Updated translations will help as well.

Loved it!
Great story - wonderful plot and extremely realistic! This book really makes you think...a great read!

This was a wonderful, suspensful, medical thriller!
I absolutely loved this book, for I could not put it down for a single second. Every character was so well defined and the plotline was well thought out and very gripping. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, anxious to find out what happened next.

The naval face of the Civil War
"Under the Blue Pennant" is a rare, firsthand account of naval life during the Civil War. For that alone, it would merit recognition, but it is also a well-written, fascinating history of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. Its author, John Grattan, served as a clerk to the Squadron's commander, which provided him an intimate glimpse into both major strategic maneuvers and into the daily life of the Civil War sailor on the Union side. Many modern military experts view today's joint operations between all services as a new approach to war. Grattan's account provides solid proof that the Union's leaders were planning and executing combined operations all along. Grattan recorded his experiences and observations in a clear, cohesive prose. What Grattan leaves out in background detail, is ably provided in editor Robert John Schneller's excellent introduction. Although quite lengthy, the introduction places Grattan's experiences into the overall context of the Civil War. "Under the Blue Pennant" helps feeling a gaping hole of Civil War literature by wonderfully illustrating the vital but long neglected naval side of the war.

Fascinating Insight Into the US Navy in the Civil War
It is frustrating finding good books on the Navy during the Civil War, most everything published looks at operations on land. So it was fun surprise to find this book the other day. Grattan had a great "view" of the navy -- both its men (of high rank and low) and its operations. One gets an insight into life on ships for officers and enlisted, which is almost unheard of in Civil War publishing. Grattan is also candid in his opinions and one appreciates the frank assessments he makes.

I was surprised at the length of the editor's introduction (50 pages) -- but it too was a pleasant surprise. Schneller's commentary is informed and well worth reading. I am glad to see that there is a publisher that still lets editors write long intros when warranted.

The book has good maps and loads of illustrations, most all of which I have never seen before. The editor works at the U.S. Naval Historical Center, it appears he must know where all the good photos, paintings and woodcuts are kept.

Bottom line -- Grattan and Schneller have teamed up after more than 130 years to produce a most fascinating book. If you are looking for something new and interesting on the Civil War, you will love their collaboration!

great book
all you look for uveitis is abook like this!!

Uveitis : Fundamentals and Clinical Practice.
Actually I am in my third year of residency in ophthalmology,I had the chance to attend to the annual meeting of the opthalmology society in my city, it was an extraordinary opportunity in many instances, I met to several subspecialists in my profession one of them gave us a conference about uveitis it was so interesting like the simplicity to speak about subjects that are "difficult to learn", I waited at the final of the conference to talk to the doctor and he kindly told me and show me his secret... the book Uveitis: Fundamental and Clinical Practice, I had already the chance to read a couple of chapters of this book and its certanly unvaluable. I truly recomend this book to each one of the beginning residents.
