A favorite
Our 2 1/2 year old daughter has lots of books; many of these are for older children, and are placed higher up on the bookshelf, waiting until she is ready for them. This book is the exception. She keeps pulling it down by herself, telling me her version of a story of a girl and her horse, an owl, a dog, her family, all details she gleans from the rich, evocative illustrations. It's already a favorite. Karen Winnick has created a masterpiece; her understated narrative strikes just the right tone without terrifying young readers, while providing rich, historical details of everyday life. The rendering of Sybil, her expressions, her hair, her clothes, all bring her immediately to life. Her tender relationships with her family, horse and community are the focus of the story, against the background of sheer bravery. A wonderful role model for my daughter. The archival map reproduced at the back of the book can actually be read to follow Sybil's route. Thank you Karen Winnick.

I love Karen Winnick's Books!
They are a delight to read. The illustrations charm me and all of the many children in my life (including a set of six-year-old triplets.) I love reading the books aloud and watching the chldren get excited by Ms. Winnick's heroic characters. Sybil's Night Ride is my favorite so far. Sybil is a brave and smart role model and the story is a wonderful adventure. Thank you, Karen Winnick. Keep writing and congratulations on another delicious read for kids (and me... their aunt.) Karen Winnick - visual and textual perfection
Karen Winnick's Sybil's Night Ride is the children's book every parent should obtain for the soul purpose of giving the best of children's literature and illustration to his or her child or pre-adolescent. Karen Winnick skillfully masters the historical story of Sybil Ludington and transcends it into a captivating 20 or so pages of beautiful words and detailed oil paints, the likes of which I have only seen in such genius as Van Gogh or Monet. This is a must, a bestseller, a joy. Also, look for Mr. Lincoln's Whiskers, the perfect complement.

My daughter started crawling because of this book!
My 7 month old daughter loves this book so much that the first time ever she started crawling was to come sit near me while I read it to her! She always laughs and giggles whenever I take this book out and she comes over to sit next to me. Other books, don't hold her attention and she wanders off after a few pages! I definitely recommend it!

Our son absolutely loves this book!
We received this book as a gift when our son was 4 months old and we have been reading this book to him ever since. He loves this book! He loves turning the pages and lifting the flaps. We have read this book so many times that I have had to glue the flaps back on several times. He is over 10 months old and this is still the book that he reaches for first.

19 Month Old's Favorite
My 19 month old daughter absolutely loves this book! It has become her new favorite. She loves lifting the flaps, and especially identifying the ball in the pictures. She also likes to quack like a duck when she sees the rubber ducks behind the shower curtain. I would say that it is a "must have" for a little one, with its element of surprise and peek-a-boo fun. It also introduces directional concepts, such as "behind" and "under".

Great resource for new and experienced teachers!
A book obviously written by a teacher. Ideas are clear for students to understand and assemble. One page directions with materials easy to find and prepare. Workable plans for huge displays that engage all students. Projects celebrate creativity at all abilities and provide students with art lessons that enhance seasonal themes. Extremely useful for the classroom teacher with artistic limits, that wants to introduce students to a variety of art media.

4 Years of Bulletin Boards By Kids and For Kids!
As an elementary teacher, I believed that bulletin boards should be made by my students and not me! I wrote Big Bulletin Boards with this concept in mind. Most of the boards within my book have been successfully constructed by students. Children will be introduced to 23 different forms of art mediums; while developing creativity and building self esteem. The boards are quick, easy, fun and creative for both boys and girls. What a wonderful way to teach cooperative learning! Big Bulletin Boards: A Cooperative Approach was previously published by Prentice-Hall, Inc. selling over 16,000 copies. I revised the book and released the Second Edition in 2001 under Hide and Seek Press. I hope you have fun making BIG bulletin boards with your students! I sure did and they became the "talk of the school."! *Note: This is a great book especially for beginning teachers, preschool/elementary teachers or librarians.

A "Must Have" for a Teacher's Library
Now and then, you have to invest in a book that pays big dividends in time and creative energy for you, as a teacher.
Karen Robbins has given us just such a book -- generously sharing nearly a hundred pages of bulletin board ideas for all the months of the year, including summer! We know that learning takes place best when we get children involved with all their senses -- what I especially like about this book is the "cooperative" in the title, because from now on bulletin boards will not be a teacher chore, but a child's delight! Thank You for this guide for those of us who are less artistically inclined!

This is a great book
For years I have wanted to tour World War One battlefields, and finally I came upon Before Endeavours Fade: A Guide to Battlefields of the First World War, by Rose E. B. Coombs. I read it cover to cover and felt doing so was the next best thing to touring those sites. When I finished reading this book, cover to cover, I thought this is better than going to each birthplace! It is certainly a lot easier, and I found it extremely satisfying to see each gravesite, all in the course of a couple hours, and to learn so many interesting things, like: What state has the most Presidential graves? Why is there a picture of David Rice Atchison's gravestone in this book? What President lived the shortest time after leaving office? If these sort of questions intrigue you, as they do me, get this book and revel in all the fascinating things you can learn from it.

Excellent Book for People who love the Presidents!
This book is the only book I have ever read in less than 24 hours. It is, by far, the most interesting and best Non-Fiction book I have ever read. It is a must for Presidential Buffs like me!

Should be in every home library
Before reading Brian Lamb's terrific book about Presidential gravesites, I counted the number of these sites that I had visited....11 to be exact. Now, after finishing the book, I want to visit the remaining ones. Mr. Lamb's ability to teach us about the lives (and in this case, the deaths) of these remarkable public servants goes well beyond C-Span. He has crafted a most enjoyable and educational book...one that should be in every home. This is a book that can be read at almost any pace...each chapter is short and well-laid out. He reminds us that every president has been important in some way because of the fact that they have all held the highest office in America... not just Washington, Lincoln and the Roosevelts, but Fillmore, Arthur and Taft as well. How important is must have been, for instance, for the children of the nation to donate their pennies to build the Harding Memorial in Marion, Ohio. The death of a president is a major event in our country's history and Mr. Lamb (along with chapter postscripts by Richard Norton Smith, who further humanizes our presidents) has succeeded in a winning form with his book. I found nothing maudlin or morose about "Who's Buried in Grant's Tomb"...only a colorful walk through America's past.

One of the most imaginative Regency authors
Eros, the god of love--sometimes called Cupid-- has less than year to find his wife, Psyche, who's been missing for over one thousand years. If he doesn't, the gods will fade and the mortal world will be in turmoil--already the weather is unusually harsh this spring because of the waning power of the gods. Psyche Hathaway will be sorry to see her friend Harry (as she started calling him when she was young because she couldn't pronounce Eros) married, but knows that he must find his wife, the goddess for whom Psyche Hathaway was named. Both she and Harry wish that she were that wife, but Harry knows that his wife would never forget him, not even after one thousand years--and Miss Hathaway has no recollection of any previous life or incarnation.

Readers who have enjoyed watching Psyche and Harry's friendship blossom over Ms. Harbaugh's two previous Regencies, CUPID'S MISTAKE and CUPID'S DARTS (starring Psyche's sister and brother, respectively), will relish the culmination of their relationship. Not all laughter and fun, CUPID'S KISS portrays the deep love of two people who have to sacrifice their own feelings for the greater good. Even readers who had not met Psyche and Harry before this novel will be feeling tugs at their hearts right along with these two memorable and intensely human characters. CUPID'S KISS is a stunning, emotional conclusion to this trilogy by one of the subgenre's most imaginative authors.

Kimberly Borrowdale, Under the Covers Book Reviews

Delightful, humorous and original

This is the culmination of Harbough's Cupid series, and is well wroth waiting for. I only managed to read Book 2 (Cupid's Darts) and not the first in the series, Cupid's Mistake. I was disappointed with the second book, feeling that the only characters worth being interested in were Psyche and Harry.

Finally, here, we get Psyche's own story, in which, as her mother puts some pressure on her to find a husband, she realises with a shock that she's in love with her childhood friend, Harry... who she can't have because he is actually Eros, the God of Love, in disguise. Harry has been looking for his wife for the last thousand years, and Psyche is helping him in his quest.

But now she loves him... and circumstances reveal to Harry that he loves her too. Both manage to hide their feelings quite successfully until, in a gesture of friendship, Harry kisses her.

The book becomes very poignant at times, especially when Psyche pleads with Harry to make her fall in love with someone else; but thankfully, as the cover notes tell us, Harry realises who Psyche really is.

The subsidiary romance involving Artemis is also delightful. This book really is a keeper!

Caps a wonderful trilogy
The final book in Karen Harbaugh's Cupid trilogy, this book absolutely was the best of the three. Although I enjoyed all of them, this is the one that I go back and reread from time to time. We finally get to see Psyche and Harry together after watching their friendship and amusing stunts in the previous two stories about Psyche's brother and sister. Not remembering much about my mythology, I also enjoyed the background information that Ms. Harbaugh included - and the side plot with Diana the Huntress was also very enjoyable. Absolutely recommended reading for anyone who enjoys Regencies - and many who typically don't!

Down To The Bone
Down To The Bone was a great story, I couldn't put the book down. It was a very intreasting story and I loved it.

"An Amish Suspense Novel"
I could not put this book down! Every page was full of excitement and entertainment. I enjoy reading novels about the Amish, but this is my favorite. I packed this book for our out of town visit to my parents. I did not have time to finsh the book during the weekend visit. We were traveling home and my 10 year old son read the last few chapters out loud to me while I drove. I could not wait to get home to read it! He became interested in the story as he read it to me, and we discussed the entire book when he finshed. Thanks for a great book!

Everyone is a suspect!
At least one time in the book, the author makes the reader suspect every character! I do not recommend books to friends very often, but this one is making the rounds at work! And everyone is saying the same thing....everyone could be the suspect!

Pop art...pop life, the beginning of the 20th cent. is Krazy
This is what all popular art forms should be. A social commentary as love poem. And poem this is. There is very little that someone can write about the Krazy experience without treading in the same terran as this wonderful book. This is were your Krazy love afair begins. And unlike Ignatz you don't show your love with a brick.

until the COMPLETE krazy is finally published
fine anthologies like this will have to do.

compiled principally by patrick mcdonnell (artist and author of "mutts" -- the finest contemporary comic strip) this is a good introduction to the best comic strip of all time. for some thirty years in the first half of the american century, george herriman created one of the greatest works of american art and literature. based almost entirely on variations on a theme (cat loves mouse, dog loves cat, mouse throws brick, cat deems said abuse [rightly?] as a sign of love), herriman caught the essence of a country barely growing up, as well as love in all its potential manifestations.

"krazy kat" can be appreciated as allegory, or it can be enjoyed simply as damned funny. this volume will allow you to have a bit of both.

but oh dear, when will some brave publisher issue the entire run?

the medium's indisputable supreme achievement
Over the past fifteen years or so, a strange new breed of art-geek has mutated in the suburbian basements (of their parents' houses) across the American landscape; they aggressivley praise every third-rate creation in comics, trying ever so hard to convince themselves that any of them could ever matter to a serious person outside their little world. On occasion one of them will pay lip service to the genius of Herriman, a ritual that is expected of them, and then go right back to buying up the kinds of pretentious or deviant efforts produced by the current so-called masters of the medium such as Spiegleman, Clowes, Ware, McCloud, Crumb, Bagge, the Hernandez brothers, Chester Brown, and so on. The terrible shame of all this is that through this overhyping of the layer of scum that has risen to the top of the commercial pond, those precious few men of genius--Jim Woodring, Joe Sacco, and a handful of others-- that have chosen to express themselves in the medium of comics are thrown out with the proverbial bathwater by those who are intrigued enough by this sort of publicity to investigate the genre, as soon as they discover that they have been had. Herriman's books, which are all surreal masterpieces of infinitely higher consciousness, poetry, originality, beauty, truth, love (and everything else good in the universe!) than 99 percent of "fine" art and certainly all of the aforementioned funnybook fishwraps, cannot even stay in print in such an environment. For this reason, and because if you have any sensitivity at all to the sublime you will wear out your first copy and will therefore need a spare to share with your children, I advise all readers to purchase two copies of everything that has Herriman's name on it. You will find it a bargain.

EXCELLENT NOVEL FOR ALL TO READ
WISDOM FROM EXPERIENCE, is a well written novel by a talented woman who is spirtually grounded and gives from the heart. The characters are true to life and you can find a little of each of them in yourself. From the hip-hop to gospel each person is unique by design. They all have something in comman and that is they are friends to the bitter end and they are bonded together by a higher power. Sharlisa is on the verge of making herself sick because she is about to turn 30 years old and she thinks that bringing her closest friends together for a girls night out would help her better cope with reality and life as it is today. This story takes you from the beginning of the day to the end with a POWERFUL ending. I appluad Karen E. Smith for a job well done. Keep writing for it is within you to do so!

Help Needed!
Looking for a cast. A producer. A director. A sound track. I WANT TO SEE THIS ON THE BIG SCREEN! This is how much I enjoyed this novel. Fabulous! Absolutely, Fabulous!

Karen E. Smith did a wonderful job in bringing together ten totally different women on one day at a birthday party to share the wisdom gained from their life experiences. There is a single career woman turning thirty (Sharlisa). A happily married woman with a child (Monique); A divorcee (Denise); A woman in an abusive marriage (Lynnese); A woman involved with a married man (Celeste); A single-parent (Alexis); A thirty-something college student with a family and a dream (Eunice); A gold digger (Claudia); A spiritual woman (Shannon); And my favorite, a promiscuous woman named Rachel. (NOT that I can relate to her philosophy about life, but she is just too funny.) Wow! Like I said... ten totally different women. I found myself thinking about the stories these women shared and comparing their lives with my life and the lives of some of my friends LONG after I finished the last page.

Monique's story will renew your faith in true love. Shannon will make you think twice (maybe three times) about your life choices. Denise will have you looking at flowers and trees for answers. Sharlisa will help you to remember that GOD IS GREAT! I applaud this author for bringing something so real and spiritually based to the literary arena. Great job!

Beautiful,extraordinary
....Let me say that this is no ordinary novel. Yes, it is about a group of women meeting to celebrate one friend's 30th birthday, but on the other hand, I also wanted to underline some of the things that the ladies were talking about in the book. A lot of great points were brought up dealing with sex, love, marriage, single parenting, education, children, and more. Not only that, the book is good, clean and very enlightening. And I recommend the book to all who are at a crossroads in life,or just looking for answers.

Maggie in the Kitchen
Restaurant Lulu's line of Mediterranean gourmet products reflects the training and culinary experiences of Chef Jody Denton, executive chef at Restaurant Lulu since 1995. Formally trained in the old-world cooking tradition, Denton has worked with such innovative restaurateurs as Wolfgang Puck, Mark Miller, and Rich Melman. He credits hot only this experience, but also extensive travel for inspiring the Lulu line. Denton returns with more than just traditional recipes. Many of the Lulu products are reinterpretations of classic Mediterranean staples and others are little known gems new to American palates. While the hearty cuisine of Provence inspires many of the products, others draw upon the cooking of Italy or North Africa: a truly pan-Mediterranean palette of flavors.

Outstanding Southern Cuisine with Twist!
Having desired this cookbook for awhile, not disappointed in the least now that its in my collection.

This is rich book, with a rectangular format with big print and nice photos accompanying each recipe, which is given in adequate instructions and comments.

Knocked out by the variety and creativity of this recipe collection. They combine so many tastes and styles here --- Moraccan, Asian, Mexican, etc. Try these and you'll go bonkers as I--- Spicy Green Tomato Soup with Crab & Country Ham, Moraccan Roasted Eggplant Bisque with Grilled Chicken and Minted Yogurt, Roast Squab with Blackberry Essence & Carrot-Thyme Spaetzle, Pan Fried Mountain Rainbow Trout with Green Tomato and Lime Brown Butter Salsa on Sweet Potato, Artichoke and Crawfish Hash, or Grilled Sturgeon on Wild Rice Risotto with Butternuts, Grilled Leeks, and Cider Reduction.

Desserts are exceptional here, especially: Brown Sugar Pear Poundcake, and the Banana Pecan Crostata with Jack Daniels vanilla ice cream.

Super creative food, that takes some time and attention to prepare, but the results are worth it.

Recommended for the serious cook who likes this food which ventures to truly zap the diner with flavor, flavor, flavor. Excellent!

The Barkers are the Best!
I'm a recent transplant from New York and have been spoiled rotten by its hundreds of cutting-edge restaurants and innovative chefs. But I have to tell you, the Barkers and Magnolia Grill are right up there. As a rule, I find chef cookbooks beyond the capabilities of the average-- or even the advanced-- home cook. NOT AFRAID OF FLAVOR is the exception. Not only are its recipes inviting, they're approachable. Moreover the story of the Barkers and their Durham, NC restaurant is warm and appealing. Thanks to the Barkers (not to mention several other local chefs they've mentored), this red-clay country is no gastromic wasteland. Even my New York City friends are impressed. I've given NOT AFRAID OF FLAVOR to half a dozen of them and they're as impressed by the cookbook as they are by the cooking they sampled at Magnolia Grill. From a huge Barker fan.
