With Fiddle and Well-Rosined Bow: A History of Old-Time Fiddling in Alabama
Published in Paperback by Univ of Alabama Pr (Txt) (2001)
Author: Joyce H. Cauthen
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Excellent Study of Fiddles and Folklore
Joyce Cauthen's book is excellent. She provides a good history of the fiddling tradition in Alabama, reaching back to the 1800s. I liked her descriptions of dances and contests, and her biographies of Alabama brag fiddlers are fascinating reading. She also includes information on the traditions and beliefs associated with fiddling, and there are good appendixes that reveal the names of tunes and fiddlers from the early 20th Century. This book will be interesting for those studying Alabama's history and folklife, and it is also an important contribution to the growing volume of scholarship on American fiddling as a whole. The book also includes terrific photographs, some of which are over 160 years old.

Great Book!
This is the perfect book for any old-fiddlers. There is tons of very interesting information. Highly recommended.

Great notation, great selections...
If you're at the beginner/intermediate level, this is a good book to pick up on after you finish your Mel Bay Deluxe Accordion Method book. ;)

I've only mastered (well, learned, anyway) a couple of the songs, but 100 songs for this price ain't bad.

Irish harp music of O"Carolan beautifully arranged!
40 O'Carolan Tunes for All Harps by Sylvia Woods.

If you have Sylvia's Teach Yourself Book, or are planning to get it, then this book is a natural to follow. The arrangements of 40 of O'Carolan's more popular harp tunes are on two levels so that the book can be used by players of different proficiencies. I was fortunate to have had access to Sylvia's books early in my learning to play the harp and I still play many of the pieces in this book on a regular basis.. Although Turlough O'Carolan lived in another era (1670-1738) he wrote much of the music played by Irish musicians today. The favorites in this book will delight you!

Sing to learn
I have found the songs in this book to be a delightful way to teach content subjects to primary level students. The children know most of the tunes and seem to remember the words to the songs easily. In turn, this helps them retain the information. I heartily recommend this book.

All Made of Tunes: Charles Ives and the Uses of Musical Borrowing
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (1995)
Author: J. Peter Burkholder
Amazon base price: $50.00
Average review score:

Extremely important book about Ives
J. Peter Burkholder's book "All Made of Tunes" is one of the most important books about Ives's music. Burkholder's book exhaustively surveys Ives's music, identifying many ways in which Ives borrowed existing tunes (hymns, popular tunes, patriotic tunes, etc). There are many musical examples that support Burkholder's arguments, and the book also has one of the best bibliographies on Ives out there. For anyone with some musical training who's interested in how Ives borrowed tunes, this book is essential.

American Fuging-Tunes, 1770-1820 : A Descriptive Catalog
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Publishing Group (1994)
Author: Karl Kroeger
Amazon base price: $75.00
Used price: $65.00
Average review score:

A good reference for anyone working with Am. hymnody.
Kroeger's tune census has almost everything I want in a reference work of this sort. He even includes brief biographical sketches of the composers. I've used the first line index to quickly look up hymn text authors. The one complaint I have is that Kroeger never gives a master list of the tune incipits. When I wanted to look up a fuging tune with a tune name other than that given it by its composer, there was no easy way to see if it was in Kroeger's catalog. I ended up having to search for it via the metrical index (fortunately the tune I was searching for was *not* in Common Meter!) I keep this book on the shelf handy to my desk and find myself reaching for it often. --Karen Willard
