Jane Adams speaks for all of us
It felt as if Jane Adams was sitting at my kitchen table helping me work through my complicated feelings about my daughter and her beau. With her warm and practical wisdom, this author manages to provide generous comfort and sound advice at the same time.

If you feel guilty, or critical, or even just frustrated with your grown-up kids, you'll find this book reads like a tall glass of cold water on a really hot day.

This Book Pierces the Veil
This was not a book I would have imagined myself having the guts or integrity to buy. It is not that I am in denial about my grown children but I am in denial about the energy I spend fretting over their adult lives. Buying this book at the recommendation of a friend was a leap - and one I am so pleased I had the gumption to do. Dr. Adams touches something here; I sense that a collective sigh is heaving its way from the huddled masses of parents like myself who cannot imagine how our grown kids have ended up with their current lives. We know there is a lot of this going around but perpective has proven uniquely hard to come by. I would have bet the mortgage I could not gain such piece of mind from a piece of non-fiction; I'd now be willing to bet most any so strung out mom or dad could not help but gain wonderfully cosmic hall passes through this painful corridor of regret, guilt and aging. Brava Jane Adams.

When kids ruin your life
Every woman past the age of 40 needs this book for life support. In "When Our Grown Children Disappoint Us," Jane Adams not only exposes our nastiest little secret, which is that we care more about our grown childrens'lives than we should - for both their health and our own. The fact that we passionately love our children is only part of the story, as Dr. Adams points out. Another part is that our egos are so painfully involved that when asked about any one of our kids, we nearly always nudge the scenario by painting the rosiest possible picture.
But the truth is that lots of our children have lots of problems, and "When Our Grown Children Disappoint" covers what must be nearly every miserable one of them - from drug addiction to never-ending dependency, from sexual acting-out to dangerous irresponsibility, from physical illness to mental. One way or another, many of our kids are - as our parents would rightfully put it - "ruining their lives." Gently, and with great humor, Dr. Adams, helps us keep these tragedies from ruining our own lives. In the process, in this beautifully written book, this longtime author shows us how to "separate, thereby restoring helth and peace to suffering parents.

Know Someone Who Is Expecting? Buy THIS BOOK!
Just ordered another 3 copies of Healy's book (1994 edition). This book was recommended in my doctorate program in education as a MUST HAVE for anyone who is expecting. The suggestions of how to build brain capacity and learning begin while a woman is pregnant, so I've purchased it for all female family members who are now expecting as well as those who have recently had babies. I've also purchased a copy for my elementary school's parent resource center. The information presented in Healy's book presents the transitions of the brain through the school years in a practical, easy to understand manner.

Great for parents of newborns AND older kids!
If you buy this book to learn about your baby, plan to hang on to it for many, many years. I have a newborn AND a 14-year-old. Although there was a lot of interesting information concerning my newborn, I learned even MORE about my older child! I really wish I had had this book a few years ago when she was struggling through sixth and seventh grades. I finally understand why she struggled! There were tips in this book that would have helped. This is a book I will try to reread at least once a year because the information is relevant to so many stages in your child's life. It is easy to read, enjoyable and useful. I especially like the bullet points of things to do at the end of each section.

Every parent should read this book!
It details in a clear, parent-friendly way the various developmental phases growing children go through and explains why it is so important that they be allowed to go through those phases. I wish this book had been available when my children were young! It makes an excellent gift to give to new parents.

Not to be missed!
What a wonderful story! This is one of those books you want to read slowly to make it last. The descriptions and details are so specific and accurate that you feel you're being exposed first-hand to a whole new culture, yet they are delivered in a way that keeps you enthralled. The characters and events are so real that you'll just want more. We're all waiting for the sequel! A great read!

Israel came alive!
I was captivated the moment I started to read this book. Having been to Israel, I was familiar with Qumran and Masada as they are today, but not as familiar with their history. I could not put this book down, and I hated to see it end. My hope is that Jane Renton Smith will write a sequel to allow us to follow the history of Israel in the first century. A great, easy reading book that helps one to appreciate the the safe keeping of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the struggles of the Jewish people in Biblical times.

Superb! A real page-turner!
The best historical Christian work of fiction I have ever read. Not only was it a page-turner, but I learned a lot about life during the first century AD. Clear, unpretentious delivery of the Message spun around accurate research of the Essene community. Without realizing I had questions about the Dead Sea scrolls and the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, I was presented with nearly visible portrayals of the scenes. I look forward to more of her work!

The ultimate gift
When other people have said it better than you allready, all you can do is refer to them :) This book is quite simply a greate buy, And will make a wonderfull gift. Full of Jim`s great art, and some history around the work & creation of some of them. Sure to apply to most people you show it to.

Where is Book 2?
This book covers the life and times of Jim Warren from his early development through his successful transition to full-time painter of the absurd, surreal or stunningly accurate portraits. To say he is unique is, of course, a gross understatement. The only thing I would have done to improve the book would be to put SECRET SPOT on the cover!

Great surrealist artbook.
This is a great book. It shows in depth how he likes to do his paintings. I love the way he transforms life with the elements, such as horses turning into water and the many other fantastic things you notice on each painting. There's no one else like him, nor will there be. He's a very unique and highly creative artist. I love the book!!!

A Fascinating Life
I didn't believe that a second volume of Jane Goodall's letters could be as good as the first (Africa in My Blood), but this one is even better. The first volume contains the better-known parts of her life: the young woman going out to Africa, her apprenticeship with Leakey and at Gombe, her courageous research and amazing discoveries about chimpanzee intelligence, tool use, and warfare. Less familiar but no less compelling is the story of her life-beyond-science, her new and powerful role as a citizen-activist for the preservation of endangered species and their fragile environments. In her efforts to educate the world about the plight of this species that shares so much genetic material with humans, Goodall has never flagged in her perseverance. Her efforts have taken her from the village schoolroom to the halls of congresses and government palaces all over the world, and her correspondence reflects the intensity of her political activity, her untiring attempts to make people see their planet anew and to assume responsibility for their environments, whether in Africa or in LA. At the same time that the second volume shows the world of her correspondence opening up to include a much wider audience, though, she still writes her chatty, witty, delightful letters to family and friends.

Jane Goodall is a much more complex person than either her books or the popular conceptions of her, generated by the media, would suggest. These letters show a woman who endured considerable suffering and stress, who maintained her faith and optimism in the face of crushing realities, and who has inspired multitudes to change their views of Africa, of science, of women, and of chimpanzees, but in these letters you feel that she's at kitchen table in your house scribbling away, or that you've received a wonderful letter in your real, not virtual, mailbox. Read this book! You'll be surprised by what you find.

More great letters from Jane Goodall
Many people may take up Beyond Innocence because they loved Africa in My Blood, because they think highly of Jane Goodall as a woman, scientist, and activist who commands an enormous presence in the world of animal and environmental studies. I came to the book, though, because of the writing, both the lucid, witty, warm letters themselves, with their brilliant details and insights, and also the superb editing and contextual work by Dale Peterson, who gives us the complete person, with her strengths and weaknesses, the myths and the truth. This is a literary achievement of the highest order, a poignant reminder of what we've lost in the era of electronic communication. Jane Goodall wrote constantly, and she wrote beautifully, and her letters reveal worlds and worlds--the worlds of her subjects, her subjectivity, and her readers. You will get a completely different Goodall here from the one you see in her books and in the biographies. This is an indispensable book, one that deserves to stand among the monuments of correspondence as a literary form.

AN INSIDE VIEW OF AN FASCINATING WOMAN!
Who has not heard of Jane Goodall and her life-long devotion, research and protection of chimpanzees? During the years Goodall has spent in Tanzania, she has lived a life many in today's society would have an extremely difficult time comprehending, let alone actually living.

In this book, the reader learns through Goodall's letters about the inner persona of Jane Goodall, her personal blessings and tragedies. While this book is not written with the distinct powerful exuberance of "Africa in My Blood," I do prefer this one simply because to me it revealed more about the woman who lurks beneath the surface. She reveals her deep sense of purpose and her relentless devotion to the chimps shines through. She is, indeed, a woman with a mission. She is also a woman who, like the chimps she has studied for so many years, has come to understand the meaning of love, loss, hope, fear, happiness, heartbreak and enormous setbacks. Goodall's letter writing is superb, with eloquent English undertones which add to the book's quality and style. She has a knack for expressing herself in a poignant and impressive manner. One other book by the same author, also deserving of a five-star rating and highly recommended is "Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey."

Brides of Montclair series
This is one of the best Historical Romances series I have ever read. I have purchased the entire set as each book was released. Not only have I read them but so has my daughter and sister and I have told many others of the series. You can really come to know all the women in these books and find that even though they are different they are really alike in their love for their husbands, children and most of all Montclair.

Brides of Montclair - 1-5
I've only read the first 5 books and am captivated by them. I refuse to read any further until I'm able to complete my set. I'm only lacking GALLANT BRIDE, HERO'S BRIDE AND SENATOR'S BRIDE, GALLANT BRIDE being the next that I haven't read yet. I'll submit my review as soon as I've been able to read the entire series, hoping that will be soon.

R. Ponder

All the books in the series are powerful and touching.
They're books about women who endured hardships and trials with courage. Though they're about women in olden days, their courage touches people in present days.

73 Ways to Improve Your Employee Communication Program

Amazon base price: $16.95

This book's a ... (that's a good thing)
... Its small size, spiral binding, plain vanilla typography, and crude drawings said this was a silly, lightweight, even childish work. WRONG. It's filled with lots of good pointers -- succinctly put & engagingly written. Shannon blends hard info & clear opinions with easy commentary & light humor. But, the mustard yellow & black color scheme doesn't do it justice, and the illustrations detract. As one interested in communications generally, I found this book surprisingly helpful.

Amazed and delighted
This was a splendid read. I'm a senior PR professional and think that I knew it all. But I learned so much from this book, I ordered 20 copies for my staff. I'm tempted to quiz them next time I do a performance review. Jane's writing is delightful in a perplexingly amorphous way. I enjoyed it thoroughly, as I basked under my heat lamp.

Great way to start off the new year...
My New Year's resolution is to keep this book handy, refer to it often and put Jane's tips into action. It's a fun read with great ideas on how to communicate more effectively. You're gonna' love it!

An excellent resource!
Keister, well-known to many English teachers as the author of the Grammar with a Giggle series, has written a helpful handbook for those of us who are faced with assessment testing. Although she teaches middle school, her activities and strategies would work well in my high school classroom. She has also included modifications and suggestions for elementary students. Keister focuses on specific skills that will raise test scores considerably. For example, one skill she hones in on is the use of strong verbs. At first this seems nit-picky, but I know from experience that using vivid words can make up for a multitude of writing sins on the state writing tests. Another skill she discusses is writing the five-paragraph essay. This focus has improved my own scores on the Standards of Learning writing assessment we have here in Virginia. She provides a huge listing of practice writing prompts, a godsend to a busy English teacher. Nearly half the book is devoted to examples of student responses to state writing prompts and the score they earned. Keister emphasizes, and in my experience rightly so, teaching the students the evaluation system used in assessing their writing. The examples of student writing and the score they earned is a blessing to me as I never had enough examples to discuss with my class, let alone scored examples. The only quibbles I had with the book are minor. Keister teaches in Florida, and their rubric is different than ours here in Virginia. The differences are minor and can be compensated for. Also the organization of the book was troublesome for me. I found I had to read the entire book to get a sense of where things were located rather than use the table of contents to find specific activities or skills. My book has lots of Post-it notes sticking out of the top to mark the great ideas I want to use this year. Overall I would say that the book is a must-have for any English teacher who wants easy, time-efficient ways to score higher on state writing assessments.

Blowing Away the State Writing Assessment Test
After my first year of teaching and experiencing the stress associated with preparing for the state writing assessment, I knew I had to find something that would help me know how to prepare my students for this important test. As I stood in the middle of a teacher's store, I spotted this book. I wondered if this would be of any help. Since I was open to any ideas, I decided to take the chance and make the purchase. Happily, I admit, this was perhaps the best purchase of my entire teaching career. Mrs. Kiester's simple four-step plan was a "God-send." She puts into print each step a teacher should follow to help her students became extremely proficient writers. I have followed her plan for several years and have had great success with my students. I believe my students truly understand the writing process, and it is all due to Mrs. Kiester's Blowing Away the State Writing Assessment Test book. Hooray, Mrs. Kiester!!! This is the answer we've all been looking for!

Blowing Away Your State Writing Assessment Tests
This book is well worth the price!! I was able to turn average writers into stronger, self confident writers. Students buy into the ideas presented in the book, and take off in their writing. For the students who just need a little boost, for dramatic flair in their writing, this book is the ticket. Start today! Your students and parents will thank you for the metamorphsis they see in student writing. Share with colleagues and you'll be a star.
