A "Must Read" for Understanding Digital Government
This book is the first work analyzing Digital Government, with special emphasis on the the risks and caveats of egov projects and dynamics between structure and technology. Fountain's "Technology Enactment" framework is specially useful for analyzing egov projects, and understanding their complexity generated by strength of institutional barriers and required operational change.

When Technology Meets Organization
The strength of this book, as some of the other reviews state, is that it clearly illustrates that the promise of technology will be fulfilled only if governments and other organizations understand how the human side of organizations either supports or undermines the implementation of technologies. This has become very clear particularly this past year as we read press reports that focus on how political divisions between government departments inhibit our ability to effectively pursue critical initiatives (e.g., terrorism is the most striking example, but decisions related to health care is another example). By describing and analyzing several real cases, Fountain identifies problems that hinder the best use of technology as well as solutions that promote best practices in an engaging way. The theoretical rigor, as well as practical application, makes this a useful book for both academics and practitioners. Personally, I hope that all people who are responsible for implementing policies related to the use of technology in government read this important book.

A useful text for an MPA Information Technology course
I whole-heartedly agree with the other reviews and add one additional comment. I used this book in my Information Technology course to Masters of Public Administration Students. The response to the book was terrific. It helped me make the point that a significant part of information technology in organizations is the people element, and led to terrific discussions on the role of social capital in organizations, among other things. In short, it is a very useful text for an MPA Information Technology course. Fountain's book is a major contribution to the literature on information technology in the public sector and is raising important points about the challenges ahead for e-government.

You Don't Need Another Calorie Book!
I have many books that count calories, fats, and carbs. They are usually too big to lug around or dont have many of our favorate foods listed as we know them, making them a chore to use. This is the only calorie counter you will need, its small and surprisingly has 99.9% of the foods we are eating at your fingertips. Unless u are a Doctor, this book will be fine for your everyday use. I have several other calorie books and this one is the one I USE daily.

Carbohydrate, Fat and Calorie Guide
The Carbohydrate, Fat and Calorie Guide has been an immensely powerful and helpful tool in helping me to make healthier food choices. Because it is pocket-sized and easy to read, the guide is incredibly convenient and simple to use. It is the best and most practical Carb, Fat & Calorie Guide I have found on the market.

Perfect Size for your Purse!
I really liked this book. I bought it to help count fat and cholesterol but it really is small and thin, perfect to carry around everywhere in my purse. And it has all the necessary information on tons of real, everyday foods.

Great book!
Enjoyed this book so much! I would recommend it to my friends.

Perfect for teens of all ages!
As a teacher, I found this book to be an excellent resource, not only for myself, but for all my students. The authors have an acute knowledge of the pressures teens deal with today and address those issues in ways every teen can relate to and find comfort in. I HIGHLY recommend it!

Extremely useful book!
Most of our children are very stressed in our highly competitive society. This book is very timely, and written in a way that children can understand. My children have enjoyed reading it, and have gotten a lot out of it.

One of my favorites...
I read this book when it was originally published in 2 volumes--however whether it is one or two books is immaterial. If you've read the Seth books you'll love this book!

Seth in a more casual setting
Seth might appear to some readers to be a bit too intellectual for a formal setting, as I once thought. However, Seth can quite hold his own with some very diverse people, and opinions. This book is basically transcripts from Jane Roberts' ESP class, and the discussion held there.

An invaluable guide to Seth
I have read Sue's original volumes and had been hoping ever since that they may be reprinted. My wish has come true.
Sue's contributions to understanding the Seth material and how it came about is invaluable because she puts matters in to a relevant, down-to-earth context. This facilitates the reader's approach to Seth's insights immensly.
Mental fogs lift, intellectual mists disperse, and all of a sudden you can see the landscape; and the trees in the wood stand out clearer than before.
I am thoroughly recommending this book along with Jane's material to everyone of my own readers.

The most endearing cookbook you'll ever have
I have a very extensive collection of cookbooks, they are a passion for me...But I must say that this cookbook impelled me to write a review, this cookbook stole my heart, it has the most endearing story behind it which I feel touches the very heart and soul of why and how this cookbook even came into existence in the first place. It is very warmly written, and has lots of fabulous recipes to be treasured for years to come...such as yellow cornbread, spoonbread, buttermilk pancakes, and biscuits, and corncakes, coffee cake, apple cake, chocolate pound cake, pineapple upsidedown cake, pie crust, apple pie, coconut cream pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, potato salad, barbeque pork, barbeque ribs, fried green tomatoes, coleslaw, split pea soup, stuffed green peppers, chili, meatloaf, baked beans, chicken and dumplin's, fried chicken and gravy, grits, oooh, to name just a few of the wonderful recipes in this book. It makes a perfect gift and truly a book to be treasured in your own collection. I highly recommend this cookbook to everyone!!!

WONDERFUL! Warmly written, great recipes, FANTASTIC!
I love this book. It is very warmly and lovingly written about an extraordinary southern black cook/nanny who changed the lives of the family she served. I wanted to cry when I read of Annie's impoverished childhood, having to work instead of going to school (even as a little girl), getting up at 4 AM from the time she was 10 years old in order to fix breakfast so everyone could get to the fields, etc. But she retained a positive attitude and deep faith (which is very humbling). Although I have not yet had a chance to try the recipes, they look wonderful, and many are prefaced by descriptions of why they are so special / taste so good ... down home southern cooking at its very finest. However, IMHO, the book would have been priceless if only for the warm, glowing descriptions of Annie, and recollections in her own words.

In Search of the Lost Domestic
Women like Annie have been largely forgotten in our culture now. For most, if their work in life was to have any dignity, they had to provide it as a living example. I also grew up with one of these women. It was a symbiotic relationship between them and our families. The authors have done a great job documenting this work; I enjoyed Annie's parts and wished she had said more! Of course, the traditional recipes of our South are always a pleasure to read, and to cook. A beautiful book, beautifully bound, perfect for a gift.

Mamo on the mountain
I thought this story was very intresting,It used a lot of adjectives, which would help children a lot with thier school work.I liked the part when the rich man was insulted and was shouting"How dare any-one in my village isult me!".But I didn't like the beging because it didn't catch my attention that much!

Mamo on the mountain
I think Mamo on the mountain was a good story because the rich man learned his lesson and there were lots of detail in it and finally it was a happy ending and I love happy endings. In school we have been doing some work on Mamo on the mountain and I have enjoyed it. We have been writing stories and been doing differences and similarities. Example in Ethiopia they have the same animals that we do like cows and sheep. Ethiopia is the place where they lived. Well anyway the story is brilliant.

Mamo on the Mountain
We thought this book was very good and we enjoyed it . It also helped us with our classwork. We worked on what is similar and what is different to us.We are now writing from another character's point of view.

Reading Fudge
I love to read in the same way that some people love eating chocolates. Just as they disregard warnings as to caloric intake in making their selections and opt for the largest, darkest,or prettiest piece in the box, so, too, I disregard the admonition not to judge a book by its cover and often select a book by its size, heft, and cover. Guilty Pleasures meets all of my superficial criteria: it has a pleasing fit to the hand, a weight perfect for horizontally-inclined literati such as I, and an eye-catching cover filled with colorful shoes such that one's eye is drawn to the authorship on the suspicion (unfounded) that this is Immelda Marcos' work. Of course, as my chocoholic friends might say, "the proof is in the pudding" and the quality of a book is in the reading. Just as a square of fudge delights as it melts and clings to the palate, Guilty Pleasures delights the mind. Eight women writers unrepentantly share the joys they find in ordinary and not so ordinary pleasures running a quixotic gamut from taking antidepressants to applying toenail polish, from crossword fanaticism to extorting money from one's parents. The writing is refreshingly witty, wicked, and wise. Although these small gems of essays are assembled of necessity in an order, I recommend reading them haphazardly. After all, what chocolate lover would adhere to the map on the candy box, eating all the creams first before proceeding to the nuts? There are enough strictures in life! Just open the book and enjoy at random. And, yes, the next time you need to tote a small gift somewhere, you might forego the candy and bring along a copy of Guilty Pleasures. Think of it as a book lover's fudge!

abashed grins
These authors have tapped into a huge vein (keg?) of human experience. Each essay details a different furtive joy, and I could feel their pleasure even in the ones I couldn't identify with myself.
There are no morals given; no helpfull hints; just honest enjoyment of many things that may not fit our public personas or enhance our professional images. Before I even finished the book, I found myself mentally starting to examine my own guilty pleasures. It's so nice to know that I'm not alone in admitting that I do get a thrill out of a few somewhat dubious activities.
My daughter keeps dipping into this book, too. Obviously, it's appeal is multi-generational.

Awesome Guilt
All the confessions in this book are deliciously guilty and are expressed in the picturesque language of poets and the best of literary writers.

Hitler Stopped By Franco

Franciso Franco: Protector of Sephardic Jews
Many have the true notion that Spanish Dictator Francisco Franco craftily prevented his Civil War ally Adolf Hitler from marching 20 divisions through Spain in World War II and occupying British controlled Gibraltar. This prevented the Axis from sealing off the western end of the Mediterranean and made a major contribution to ultimate Allied victory.

What many may, however, learn for the first time in the Jane and Bert Boyars' 2001 documentary novel HITLER STOPPED BY FRANCO is that Franco also got away with provoking Hitler by his bold assistance to Jews.

An introductory quote (p. 104): "The Sephardim, Jews of Spain and Portugal, had not seen Spain since Ferdinand and Isabella had expelled them in 1492 after giving them the opportunity to remain by becoming true Catholics."

Franco's positive attitude towards Jews is at least six years older than Hitler's 1933 rise to power in Germany. As early as 1927 as a fighting Colonel commanding thousands of men in Spanish Morocco, Francisco Franco received permission from Madrid to use his troops to protect from Muslims the local Sephardic Jews. The Sephardic community was grateful and in 1936 supported Franco with money at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

In 1927 Spanish dictator Primo de Rivera had also told Franco that Sephardic Jews might return to Spain, become citizens and worship as they pleased. This invitation was deep in Franco's memory when, in 1940, French Jews began beseeching Spanish authorities in Vichy France for asylum on the basis of Spanish citizenship. (p. 104)

As told by Franco's wife to the authors, Franco then briefly but decisively mulled over what to do. "...I have sworn to give my life protecting Spaniards." (p. 105)

After prayer, Franco authorized issuing Spanish passports to Sephardim as their right under Spanish law. Asked by consular officials how to tell Sephardim from non-Sephardim, Franco ruled, "They are all Sephardim."

By September 1940 Hitler was pressuring Franco to cede to Germany one of the Canary Islands and to allow the Wehrmacht to march on Gibraltar through Spain. (p.106)

By November 1940 Hitler told Serrano Suner, Franco's brother-in-law, that he had at the moment 186 inactive German divisions and he intended to use some of them to take Gibraltar. Nor had he failed to notice Franco's Jewish policy. "Spanish passports are being issued to Jews who have never seen Spain, nor have their ancestors in precisely 448 years. ... Suddenly French are Spanish. And from Poland suddenly Poles are Spaniards. And in Denmark and the Netherlands ... overnight my enemies have Spanish passports and are able to leave my jurisdiction." (p. 159)

And leave they did. Nor did Jews ever forget that Franco was their benefactor. For the rest of this little known story -- and for much more-- read HITLER STOPPED BY FRANCO.

-OOO-

Very revealing! Amazing historical information !
This book is certainly a most amazing and remarkable feat.It reveals quite a number of historical events and facts that demolish many myths and prejudices regarding Francisco Franco.Especially interesting is his protection of the many hundreds, perhaps thousands,of persecuted Jews in the face of Hitler's monstrous nazi death onslaught.Franco's handling of the WWII "Axis of Evil",his retaining Spain out of the war in spite of ominous and overwhelming pressures, his almost unique humanitarian and compassionate assistance to the to- be- murdered Jewish people, his patriotism and devotion to Spain and rock solid serenity in the face of great dangers is well documented and source supported in this book. What a pity that these achievements have received such little attention!Could it have been that Communism enormous propaganda resources did'nt take kindly to Franco's defeat of its attempt to take over Spain?.....Bravo for the Boyars!!!!

Wonderful read. Incredible accuracy. Franco saved Humankind!
This book has so many great moments that I cannot list them all here without getting close to rewrite the full book again! FIRST GREAT MOMENT: The authors fictional depiction of how the world could be now. Just imagine this: A svastika flag over the White House! And, you know? If Franco hasn't stopped Hitler we could probably living that nightmare nowadays! SECOND GREAT MOMENT: The very beginning of the book, when you grasp a taste of the narrative style. Just begining to read it you KNOW you are going to enjoy it. THIRD GREAT MOMENT: Of course, the historical meeting at Hitler's train in the Spain's border at Irun-Hendaye. The fact that the authors could interview and tape record directly the only survivor from that reunion (Serrano Suñer) gives this chapter an incredible significance! FOURTH GREAT MOMENT: When you discover that the misterious man helping Franco with information on Germany's most secret moves was, actually, German admiral Canaris. Great scene! FIFTH GREAT MOMENT (AMONG DOZENS OF OTHERS): When the Allies and the Germans seem to be ready to invade Spain, and Franco is, in the middle of all that tension JUST OIL PAINTING!

Another important thing is to read and confirm that PRESS manipulation has always existed. It's incredible how that time media were totally biased and misinforming about the realities of Spain, and about the real character of Franco. This book is not only about a circumstance that did change History. This book could and SHOULD change the perception people have of Franco himself. But go ask the jews: they just call him the GREATEST benefactor of the jews amidst the WWII havoc.

Go read it. At the appendix's part after the end of the book, you can confirm that it is totally and painfully documented. But, besides its factual ground, it is a wonderful novel to read. Oh! And prepare to enjoy the tension, like in any good thriller, even when you know the final outcome of events. Five stars, for this book, absolutely!...

Great Summer Read!
Great summer/beach read. The interesting mix of characters makes it a page turner.

I'll have to check out Ms. Arden's web site to find out more about them.

The Ultimate Beach Book
You don't need a beach to enjoy this ultimate beach book. Guess the true identify of Verateague, the fictious mask for this jewel of a town on the Delmarva Penninsula (Delaware-Maryland-Virginia area). This wonderful place, an artist's colony and fishing town, is host to the passions of assorted spicy characters, from "the Hooligan", Hoolie Daniels, an artist and girl about town, to roving-eyed realtor, Beau Palmer, intrepid cop Joe Ryan, and the stars of the show, brothers and heroes Scotland and Denmark Caltrider, too-too-close brother and sister Brevet and Jesse, and of course, our heroine, Racheal West. Follow our gorgeous heroine, Racheal, as she flees the tragic death of her husband, only to find herself following in the footsteps of her predecessor at the Art Center, the mysteriously murdered Liz Simon. In the course of solving this mystery, encounter sassy dialogue, romantic byplay, evocations of the power and fury of the storms of the eastern shore, and much more! In short, this is your book for the summertime--or anytime you want both romance and mystery in one package. Bravo Ms Arden!

What a great read!
And now for something completely different! The Fourth Storm draws you in from the very beginning. You feel as if you know the characters in this original, and a bit naughty, tale spun by Ms. Arden. The characters and plot are as tumultuous as the storms. I loved it and didn't want it to end. The Fourth Storm guarantees a good time. Don't miss the fun!

A nice walk down memory lane
Just what I needed! Fun, quick recipes that WORK! A bit dated, of course, but still.

A definite favorite!
It's amazing that all of the previous reviewers of this book have had such similar experiences with it as we have. My wife picked up a copy several years ago, before we were married, and we were surprised at how good it is. We also used it until it fell apart, but were lucky enough to find a second copy at our local used bookstore. I actually came here hoping to find a "sequel."

Whenever we're at a loss for what to cook for dinner, we turn to this book. The recipes are delicious, use only a few ingredients (which we often have around the house), and are quick and easy to prepare. Also included are illustrations that make techniques (like splitting a cornish hen) less intimidating, as well as charts (like ideas for marinades) that will inspire you to create your own recipes.

We also bring the book when we're vacationing somewhere that has a kitchen. We can pick out a few recipes and know we will end up with a short shopping list of easy-to-find items. And they come out great without fail.

Excellent, basic cookbook, with bonus '80s nostalgia!
This is a terrific, basic cookbook, with simple-but-tasty recipes for almost any "normal" food you'd want to make, plus many more exotic things. But none of them are TOO exotic -- every ingredient in the book is something you'd be able to find at the smallest grocery store in the country. (For example, the hummus recipe suggests peanut butter as a substitute for tahini.) The photography is thorough and attractive, and now has the added bonus of showing table settings in a charmingly retro 1980s style!

If this book gets reprinted, or if you find a copy at a used bookstore, buy it for yourself or as a gift for a new graduate. It's the perfect "first cookbook" for a young person, especially a young woman.
