Knock Knock! Who's come to call?
I'm 30 years old and I still remember reading this book as a child. Not only can I recite parts of it to this day, but so can my mother.
It is a fun way to learn to count. The illustrations are enchanting, as well as the entire story involving all sorts of animals preparing for The Butterfly Ball.

wonderful illustrations
I am a 21 year old college student. My mom read this book to me when I was little. The illustrations were always my favorite part of the book. The mouse finds her way to the ball in a very magical way. I read that book so many times that I can still recite nearly half of it. In my opinion this book was more a visual experience than about counting. Any child should be lucky to own this wonderful piece of work.

Still a wonderful book!
I'm 27 and have a very worn copy of the 1976 publication of this book. As a child, I read it so often that I have pieces memorized to this day. It's still my favorite book, and I was afraid I'd never be able to replace it. How wonderful to see such an enchanting and educational book is still in print!

i have never forgotten this book
in elementary school we actually watched this as a movie too. this was one of the most profound books that i have ever read. it would make me sob! but it is such a great book to encourage compassion and remind "tough" children that it is ok to be tender and to show that you love something...

Great influence
I was a 4th grader in a lot of trouble and detached from school. Our librarian gave this book to me and I read it hundreds of times that year and the next. I rememberd it only recently. I now work as an international photojournalist and assume that Gordon Parks images kept me intersted in literacy as a child and had a profound impact on the course of my current career. This book was to me what the kitten was to J.T.- a saviour.

Great book for reluctant readers
I have used J.T. for years to reach reluctant readers. The pictures and dialogue give an easy context for lower readers to decode and comprehend the text. J.T. is a wonderful character that anyone can relate to. The copies I have are falling apart from much use and love.

this was an awsome book!
I recommend this book to 4th and 5th graders especially. This
book is very exciting once you start reading it you won't want to stop! There is a lot of adventure and sometimes-freaky parts in Journey to Nowhere. As 'Mem' the main character, falls off her family's wagon and travels farther and farther into the woods I guarantee you won't want to stop reading this book!

A good start to what sounds like an interesting series.
"Journey to Nowhere" was nonstop and never boring. Although it doesn't give a feel of what the trail was like, it showed unsafe traveling was, and what life was like once settling on fresh land, without a house. Auch showed how dangerous living in the open terrain was and how blind some people were to those dangers. I certainly recommend this book to readers who are interested in this era and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

good book
this book was a greak adventure, that said what was probly giong through a girls mind during the time of the Oregon Trail. It said how her family was close, but Mem who is the main character would rather do mans work, rather then do house hold work.

Max & Jane (Love Stories)

GREAT GREAT gREAt
This book was great. this was the first first love stories book ive read so far, and its great. It made me laugh, cry and think.
Max and Jane make a great couple. I reccomend this book to anyone who likes love stories.

Excellent teen romance
I've read several Elizabeth Craft books and find *Max and Jane* to be her very best so far. It's a wholesome, solid romance that was realistic. Max and Jane are very likable characters and they are so fun together. There aren't the childish, silly games being played, just an innocent evolving of their relationship. I really hope there is a sequel!

So romantic!
This was the first Love Stories I ever read,a nd trust me, its kept me coming back for more. It's so sweet and romantic, I practically feel in love with Max!

OKay, Jane is ordinary-or so she thinks- she has 2 really close friends Christy and Nicole. She has blonde hair in a ponytail and a make-upless face. But she does have an unordinary crush on Charlie-the most popular boy in school. She convinces Max, her sorta friend to help her out. He's popular, so she figures he's her sort of key in. Anyway, as he tries to teach her to be "cool" and what "every guy wants' he realizes that she's what HE wants. And as Jane gets to know Charlie a little more she discovers that he's not the one that she wants anymore. She wants Max. Anyways, you have to read the book to find out what happens-even though I'm sure you can guess!!

So please read the book, even if "romance" isn't your thing. Just give it a try! I hoped i help convince you! Oh, and read "Justin and Nicole" and "Jake and Christy"-the other two books in this triligoy.

Great Little Book!
This is a great little book. The stretches are wonderful for beginners or people with physical limitations. All stretches ared done either standing or sitting in a chair. The book lies flat, and it even includeds a CD, so when you've gone through the routine a few times with the pictures, you can just use the CD to lead you through the poses in exactly 15 minutes. No mat or blocks or straps or other equipment are needed. This is the best little yoga warmup book I've ever seen, and really is a great value for the price! Try it, you'll like it. :)

In Praise of "A Morning Cup..."
I have been practicing Yoga for many years and teaching classes for a few. But I've never seen a little book that so effectively portrays Yoga as accessible and fun for people at any level of ability. I was given a copy by a participant in my morning class. After reading and 'doing' it I ordered 5 copies to give to my Yoga-reluctant friends for Christmas. One copy went to an octogenarian friend who suffers respiratory difficulties. I went to visit her yesterday, only to find her in the bedroom, book open, CD playing and actually practicing her new-found Yoga! But even as 'easy' as the program is, I use it myself on the mornings I just can't kick-start my own practice. It feels great, I get present and fully awake, and it reminds me that it is the breath that is the soul of Yogic practice. I can recommend and endorse this book without reservation. It is a jewel to be treasured!

Simply great
A lovely little book, simply and beautifully written, which details a 15 minute morning workout that can really make a diference if practiced regularly. The accompanying CD will make sure one sticks to the timeframe :) The book is very nicely produced, hardback with ringbinding inside, so it lays flat, thus making it easier to look at the illustrations the first time thru. The writer gets into the philosophy of yoga simply and concisely, and even manages to give nice little explanations of the yoga sutras and an excellent guide to meditation. Oh - and the drawings and colours used are so cute!

You can't put this one down
Is there anything more interesting that reading a book that takes place in a neighborhood that you are familiar with? My parents live in Beachwood, Ohio - they go to Corky & Lenny's and I am too too familiar with Beachwood Mall! Plus, not only is the neighborhood familiar, the people seem to be also!

Jane Horowitz is not plain - she is real - not a girl yet not yet a woman (thank's Britney!) - she's a middle child - constantly being overshadowed by her beautiful older sister Caroline and putting up with her pathological liar younger brother, Willy. Instead of going to college (even though she was valedictorian of her high school class), she works as a secretary to her therapist (whom she secretly has a crush on). She is engaged to a man she can barely stand but just doesn't know what to do with her life.

Eve Horowitz writes this book in a female "Holden Caulfied" type of way - except that the characters are Jewish and live in Ohio instead of NY. There are plenty of NY references though as Jane's sister is marrying an orthodox man (who's lifestyle is as alien to Jane's family as her family is to their's).

The only disappointment is that the author seems to have only written this one book. I'd love to read another one.

Funny & Insightful!
I, too, just picked this off of the library shelf thinking it would be a quick, fun, read, but it was really insightful! I came to Amazon to see if Eve Horowitz wrote any more novels, and was diappointed to see that Plain Jane was her first and only! I'll keep checking, though, because she is a very talented writer! She really captured all of the conflicts experienced by an almost 20-something!

Funny & Insightful
This book is truly a delight. Through her self-deprecating humor and sharp take on those around her "Jane" takes us through a rocky time in her life to emerge so much wiser.

I signed on here to try and find other works by Eve Horowitz and am disappointed to find there aren't any.

Slide Down My Cellar Door

Great job!
Slide Down my Cellar Door was extremely informative and entertaining. The story line was well crafted, the characters properly developed and continuity was maintained throughout.

The author certainly has a grasp for her subject. She either lived it in her own life or worked with those who did. Her research seems flawless.

The book moves rapidly and seamlessly through the lives of several characters which all have an affiliation to one another in the end.

Great job!

A book with heart and grit
I would be less than honest if I didn't admit that the book and its situations disturbed me, they did. This is not to say however, that I found the book anything less than wonderfully written. The book brings out a clear image of the day-to-day terror that exists in some families. Having lived in a warm and nurturing household, it was difficult for me to grasp until the end.

I give Jane Basta two hearty thumbs up for her excellent work. I will certainly be first in line for her next book.

A wonderful story about something we dare not talk about
The central theme of this book is alcoholism, rape and abuse. It's not for the light hearted but rather for those who wish to expand the limits of their world.

Ms. Basta tackled these difficult subjects head-on and with the flair of a seasoned writer bringing to life the horror faced every day by families everywhere.

I applaud her for her insight and courage and admire for the manner in which she wrote this fascinating story.

Space Academy: The Kirsten Chronicles (Nicholas, Mark. the Kirsten Chronicles, V. 1.)

Average review score:

An engaging adventure from cover to cover
Collaboratively written by Mark Nicholas and Jane Christine for young adults with a taste for science fiction, Space Academy: Volume One Of The Kirsten Chronicles is an engaging adventure from cover to cover. Kirsten is an empathic, 16-year-old cadet at the Space Academy who shares a special bond with an extraterrestrial life form called a skeecat. Together they encounter danger and challenge when her roommate and dorm mother disappear. Determined to find answers, Kirsten embarks on a search to find them in this briskly written, highly enjoyable 148 page novel.

A great book for teens!
Thoroughly enjoyed the book as did friends I loaned it to. Kirsten should give Harry Potter some real competition. Recommend the book to anyone wanting a good science fiction/mystery. It may be written for teens, but even adults can enjoy it. The authors don't "write down", which is a definite plus in my eyes.

A reader from Boise, ID
Space Academy moves at a fast pace and keeps the reader engaged throughout the entire story. This book is well written and full of realistic dialogue. Although targeted for the juvenile market, the book is enjoyable for all ages.

better than most
I liked how this book incorporated spirituality, fantasy, and a respect for femaleness in its map of recovery. At the same time, it offered a "course" and "solution" to overcoming eating disorders, which disrespects the very personal and creative reasons that individuals cope by abusing food and their bodies. It might provide people with new insights and motivation, but it is still somewhat disempowering because it sets the reader up as a novice and the authors as the experts. However, as far as self-help books go, it is one of the best.

This is a great book for people who diets haven't worked for
This is such an excellent book. My only fear is that many people do not realize that dieting can cause eating disorders and that's why I wish the book was also in the Health/Diet section of the stores. However it is NOT a diet book, but teaches us to eat naturally and normally and how to loose weight and keep it off by loving ourselves. However it is much more than that still. It helped me realize that my body is unique and may not conform to the cultural ideal. Thank God for this book.

Determined to Live
I was in the bookstore looking for another book but came across this one. I'm so glad I did. I had tried every diet out there within reason and found that nothing helped. It seems that whenever someone tells you that you can't have something, you want it more -- especially when it comes to food. They help you to understand why this is. I am recommending this book to every woman I know, especially if she's on another diet!!!!!
