ALL of us CAN be Saints!
Yes, there is an "ordinary" path to holiness for all of us. God intended the children He created in His Image and Likeness to grow daily more to resemble Him. Dr. Richard's book is a gem. He shows the reader the traditional way of spirituality and prayer meant for everyone.

Especially good for the Catholic lay person, the book will also be appreciated by those not belonging to the Catholic Church, but who are sincerely seeking to live a holy life. Most compelling, for me, is the way the author shows through scripture how Jesus formed his disciples in holiness. I also appreciated quotations from the saints.

This was a gift I gladly gave to people for Christmas and continue to give as birthday presents. Don't miss it for yourself, and don't hesitiate to give it to anyone you know. Just be careful if you let someone borrow your copy. You may not get it back in a hurry!

Greak book!
As someone who is tremendously interested in the various modes of Christian spirituality, I found this book to be better than I could have asked for. It is well authored and has information that is useful to both those who are just becoming interested in the subject, or for someone who has had more experience. It is a very easy read and has excellent content. It is a great addition to any theological librairy.

Praying With Benedict
Published in Paperback by St. Mary's Press (1997)
Author: Katherine Howard
Amazon base price: $8.95
Used price: $7.00

How is your prayer life?
I just finished praying through Katherine Howard's excellent spiritual guidebook,"Praying with Benedict". Howard's book offers readers more than just information on the prayer life of Benedict. She invites you into a deeper, richer experience of intimacy with God in prayer, simply by reading through this book, section by section. Each chapter includes a brief statement of the theme, an opening prayer, biographical stories about Benedict, selections from the Rule of Benedict, and practical reflections, or spiritual exercises for participation in prayer with Benedict's approach to the spiritual life. Howard closes each chapter with a selection from Scripture and a closing prayer. I found my experience of prayer deepening as I journeyed with Benedict through these chapters, exploring such themes as "thirsting for the living God", "the love of Christ", "work for the good of all" and "hospitality". For another book which explores the Rule of St. Benedict, offering insights for parents on the holy calling of raising children, look for "The Family Cloister: Benedictine Wisdom for the Home", by David Robinson, (New York: Crossroad, 2000).

An Excellent Aid to Meditation and Prayer
Fr Groeschel skillfully intermixes very short thoughts and examples which cause you to meditate about what he is saying. His writing style does not allow this to be a quick read -- you can't help reflecting on the writings. Then, after you've digested his words for a while he interspaces his beautiful prayers, which always seem to be just what you would want to say to God at that time. After reading a few pages of this book, I always come away feeling a bit closer to God, and understanding what He wants of me -- unfortunately this is sometimes scary, considering how little I give Him. You can't buy a better book for improving your relations with God, and it makes an excellent gift for people of any faith.

A must for those who love architecture!
This recent publication of Quigley's works quickly demonstrates his passion and commitment to achieving a balanced "fit" between progressive, modern architecture and the context that surrounds it. Featuring photographs, drawings, and insightful essays and comments from Quigley and others familiar with the San Diego setting. A must read for architecture students and practicioners interested in the importance of the context of any architectural work. NOT the typical trade monograph...this book is readable, educational, and down to earth. The editor/writer does a good job of focusing on the work, not individual criticisims. Learn about this important architect of our times!!

Best Translation available of the Benedictine Rule.
As a Benedictine, I am concerned with having accurate translations of the Holy Rule by which I live. Justin McCann's translation is the very best, free of the revisionism of many other translations. It is the only one I keep. I hope it never goes out of print!

A very valuable tool for scholars;a most useful gift for all
In this day when so much work in done on the computer, to have the Rule of Saint Benedict and so many relative documents at our fingertips is a real plus. The CD is exceptionally well done with search tolls that work very well. This will not only be useful to scholars but to all who look to the Holy Rule, whose numbers mount as Lay Oblates and Cistercian Lay Contemplatives daily increase in number. For monks and nuns it is most useful. I only hope a way can be found to make it available to the poor monastics of the Third World.

The Rule of St. Benedict: A Guide to Christian Living
Published in Paperback by International Specialized Book Services (1994)
Author: George Holzherr
Amazon base price: $30.00
Average review score:

Very pastoral as well as scholarly
This book is wonderful! I have read it and think it is highly pastoral, a synthesis of conferences by Abbot Holzherr to his community, yet a fresh look at the Rule. He combines insight with scholarly outlook and sees the Rule as a sure guide for modern living. Also, it can be used as a scholarly source with notes and bibliography which are pretty inculsive of what's out there right now. Highly recommended!
