Excellent
A very useful tool for both teachers and students who are learning English for Business at a beginner's level. Absolutely necessary are the tapes accompanying the book. Good sequenced teaching material, didactic, and fun to read and listen to. Highly recommended. Too bad it's out of print and the tapes are not available either.

Fabulous by Dorothy Benedict
This is the second of the trio of books - Pagan The Black; Fabulous; Bandoleer - about Sandy and Mistie Seaton and their horses. Sandy has partially tamed a wild stallion called Pagan and Mistie has a gentle palomino mare, Sunrise. In this book Sunrise presents Mistie with a dark foal which is at first disappointing as he is sired by an Appaloosa stallion. Defiantly she names him Fabulous. The colt grows on their mountainous ranch while she is away at school and on her return she finds that he has changed coat to reveal wonderful spotted markings. This is the first book to be written about the new breed, Pony of the Americas. This breed combines the agility and temperament of the Quarter Horse with a smaller size and the wonderful coat markings of the Appaloosa. Mistie revels in her colt until he is stolen and she and Sandy have to search the snowcovered mountainsides for him. Sunrise is shot by deerhunters who realise the error of their ways when confronted by Sandy on the wild Pagan. Mistie leaves school to nurse her injured mare for months, hoping that she will not be lamed for life. Sandy starting college means that Pagan will be unhappy in confinement, and the boy has to make an agonising choice about whether to keep his stallion safe or let him loose.

These are really well told books about a time before television, when telephones were a party line, when ranching was rough and horses were a way of life. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Devotion to the Sacrament of Reconciliation
"Clothed in Grace, we can cross mountains, and climb the hill of our Christian Duty without halting on the way." These words of Saint Jose Maria Escriva can be found in Baur's beautiful work, and they provide a theoretical and foundational platform from which to begin the journey toward Christian perfection. Devotion to the Sacrament of Reconciliation is especially necessary for those who recieve the Eucharist frequently. The two sacraments go hand in hand. If you are looking for a book that will strengthen your belief in Reconciliation, this book is for you.

Health care ethics : a theological analysis

Introduction to a Catholic perspective on health care issues
I found this book an excellent introduction into the Church's teachings on contemporary issues of medical ethics. An attempt is made to refute popular liberal arguments--and does a fair job at it. Lots of room for dissagreement and further discussion, however; it is not exhaustive. Emphasis on Papal writings and their implications for pluralist societies. Overall, a good read.

A DELIGHTFUL AND INSPIRING STORY
Twin brother and sister Benedict and Scholastica were rambunctious youngsters who lived many years ago in Nursia, a small mountain town in northern Italy. They climbed trees, raced each other up and down the hills, and befriended stray cats. They were not only twins but constant playmates and best friends.

When the twins grew older, as was the custom of their day, Benedict was sent to Rome to study while Scholastica went to a nearby monastery to learn to read and write. While Scholastica easily adapted to her new live, enjoying the women she met and the prayers that were said, Benedict was troubled by the poverty and cruelty to slaves that he encountered in Rome. Although he knew that the great city opened many avenues for him and that he was expected to remain there to study, Benedict chose to go to a small village where he joined a small number who spent their days in prayer and labor.

Later, Benedict felt God was calling him to live alone so he found a cave for shelter. It was there that shepherds found him and deemed him to be a holy hermit. As Benedict's reputation spread other clerics became envious and even tried to do away with him.

Eventually the solitary believer went to the peak of Monte Cassino where he founded a monastery, which became a refuge for many.

Scholastica, along with a group of other nuns, would come to the monastery to visit her brother once a year and became a great source of support for him and his work.

Tomie de Paola's delightful, boldly colored acrylic illustrations enliven this inspiring story of faith and devotion.

Inside the minds of Communist and peasant insurrectionists!
This is a unique and fascinating account of a World War II resistance movement become communist and its violent struggle against the Philippine government and USA backing. The Huk Rebellion is fundamental to the understanding of Philippines politics and its evolution. This account is written from the rebel's point of view and contains many interviews with combatants from both sides. It provides many lessons for both guerillas and counter-insurgent forces. In many ways this rebellion has not yet ended.

Excellent study of the role of women and men in the Church!
Fr.Ashley has produced a well-documented and thoughtful book on the roles of men and women in the church, discussing what true justice is, what participation in the life and happenings of the Church really means, and defenses for the prohibition of women to the sacrament of Holy Orders. Clearly, he has taken this issue very seriously and has done considerbale research in the area. The bibliography alone is amazing. While the work presents the reader with familiar issues, he explores a few new dimensions and contributes what I feel to be a significant aspect of gender and participation in the Church, namely the subject of what it means to be an active, "participating" member of the Church as a man or woman and the necessity of maintaining fidelity and "justice" to God's plan for the Church. Very interesting and worthwhile!

Good Version for Children - and Adults too
When I originally purchased this "Junior Classic" - as a gift for my little brother, an Arthur aficianado - I didn't expect to enjoy it much myself. However, the adaptation is well-done, and is not so inane as to make it unbearable to anyone over ten, which is what I expected. I was so pleasantly surprised that I went out and bought myself a copy!

British actor Sean Bean has an incredible range of voices and accents, which he uses impeccably to enrich the characters he reads (though all the narrative is done in his lovely native Yorkshire). Morgana le Fay, Lancelot, Elaine, and, yes, Arthur all come to life as one listens. A very enjoyable audiobook, for bedtime or listening to in the car, or just as a mini-holiday!

A Must Read Book To Begin Understanding Indonesian Politics
Within his collection of essays in this book, Anderson explores the underlying cultures of Indonesian politics. He ties back the political atmosphere of Indonesia to the social values of the most dominant culture in Indonesia, the Javanese culture. These essays were written prior to 1984 (mostly in the late 60's), but their contents relate well even to the present political scenes of Indonesia.

As an American citizen with Indonesian ancestry, I find that this book would help anyone who is interested in learning the complexity of Indonesia's sociopolitical arena. A lot of misunderstandings about Indonesia's politics can be cleared by reading this book. This book does not talk about the current political scenes, rather it explains the origins of political values that are dominant in Indonesia even today.

Life and Miracles of St. Benedict (Book Two of the Dialogues).

The stories of the miracles of a miraculous Saint.
Saint Benedict of Nursia, probably the greatest influence on Western Monasicism, lived a life filled with many miraculous deeds, indeed, so many that Pope Saint Gregory I wrote an entire book about just his miracles. This little gem serves not truly as a collection of stories about miraculous deeds. It is quite possible that not even all these deeds occured during Saint Benedict's lifetime. However, all these deeds point back to lives that were influenced by deep faiths in God and therefore, serve a high purpose.

Included among these tales are the interlocutions of a certain deacon, by name Peter, which help to clarify difficulties with certain theological topics presented by Gregory.

It does not matter if these tales are all true. The subject at hand is the life of a Saint who lived for God in his lifetime and was indeed a blessed individual, influencing others to live for God. I feel that this is an excellent reading for individuals who want to read about the historical and traditional Saint Benedict of Nursia.
