Better for groups than individuals
It is very short (48 pages) and is in more of a workbook format, with a section on one topic then some open-ended questions for the reader to fill out, discuss with a close friend or write about in a journal. Good place for a starting point on discussions about grief recovery. I would recommend this book in conjunction with another, meatier book on grief, or if bought in conjunction with a journal for the person to write through their feelings or answers to the open-ended questions presented in this book.

Healing steps for the bereved
There is a great need for attention to be given to the impact of religious faith on the grieving process. This book addresses that need. It is a way to actually go through grief by following the suggestions provided in this book. It is essential reading for caregivers and those who are grief stricken. It is meant to readable and practical in it's presentation.

Excellent resource for individuals or groups
If you are looking for a book which may be used individually or as an outline for a group...this is it. Here is a healing tool for the bereaved. It gives a clear and concise way for coping. It places the loss into the spiritual realm. This is really a unique approach for bereavement.

motivating the cash potato to painlessly save and invest
Meany's quick read shows the cash potato how to find money--even when you think there's none left over--and snag it and make it grow! Down-to-earth, funny, practical, and SIMPLE ("quick and painless," he keeps hammering), the book is well laid-out and well indexed. Even *you* have time to read this book!

This is a good starter book for the uninitiated

It's the perfect book for people like me, a single mom in a secure job with some apprehension about having enough for retirement, with no idea about investing. It would also be a good book for a budding capitalist just starting his or her first job or young marrieds who wanted to get on track before they invested all their hard-earned on Williams-Sonoma's color-of-the-month Cuisinart. The book has neatly packaged chapters which you can skip around in. Though if you don't skip, the chapters keep building on previous ones so you have a sense in a nicely structured way of what this whole money mystery encompasses, in level of importance. I was mostly interested in investing, though there's lots of other information that makes it possible to have something to invest after you've cut expenses and made a will and made sure your insurance is right (well, OK, I didn't read that chapter yet).

I liked the specific examples of, say, discount brokers and internet sites for further research. At the end I didn't feel like I had to be a broker to play with the big kids. So I can read the bidness news now and cross-reference anything I don't understand with Meany's book and impress my kids with my astute planning for their inheritance. The writing has a calming effect, partly because of the humor and partly because of the simplicity with which this arcane knowledge is presented. What I like about all Meany's books is that they teach you to take a deep breath, and then get on with the business at hand.

This stuff really works!!
Just reviewed it today!! Having followed Meany's money advice for the past twenty two years, he's helped me to acquire a 6-figure portfolio, send a kid to college, acquire five different properties (sold three), and manage gifts from my parents' estate. I'm his wife and it works for me!!!

Nice Pictures but too little material.
This book is a handy book with nice pictures for starters . There should be more materials than these as the pages are filled with more pictures than words and too little explainations. There are too little detail or advice or tips said about stargazing as the main subject. Conslusion: Good, but should contain about 50% more materials and advices/details.

For the right audience, a must have -- read on...
If you are ages 10-15, or an adult who wants to get "up to speed" on astronomy-speak in under a 5 hour read -- this is the book to own! This chronology of major astrological events to look for in the sky which comes at the end of the book is outdated by a few years due to the publish date, but the sky charts (actually full page photos) -- specifically and only for summer months in the U.S. -- were actually usable! Also useful was the section on purchasing a telescope for a novice or even decent binoculars (a $50 investment to start was recommended, imagine that!). Also, a handy refernce for dates of meteor showers is a great thing for kids in large groups. And for a freeze-baby who lives in a northern climate who only takes the time to stargaze on warm, summer, cloudless nights, this is the only book I need.

You'll pull this book out time and time again.
My third year of owning this great night time aid has only increased my appreciation of what lies above. This book has great reference guides for planetary location, eclipse tables, lunar maps, and enough material for the person observing with binicoulars (which I started out with), to someone with an intermediate telescope (I moved up to a 6" reflector because I wanted to see more of what is presented). The lay-out of the book is very straight forward, and any one may pick it up and begin to locate everything pictured. Owners of small refracter telescopes will find renewed interest in what they will be able to view with the help of this book. A must have companion if you starting out, an old friend as time goes by.

Garden of the Brave in War: Recollections of Iran
Published in Hardcover by Mage Pub (2003)
Author: Terence O'Donnell

Average review score:

Garden of the Brave in War
The story rings true; the author's interpretation of the events and Iranians' behavior sounds patronizing and mildly insulting.

A Masterpiece
This book is a treasure, beloved by anyone who has spent time in Iran, and/or who loves the English language used in a way unique to O'Donnell. It has been comared to Out of Africa - the deceptively simple wording, pared to the bone. I have given this book to people in Europe and America and they all, without prodding, contact me to tell me what a wonderful experience it has been for them.
Of course things have changed since he was there! But this gem will bring forth an Iran that many of us were blessed to know (1960's). None of us would pretend to have understood the complexity of that wonderfully rich culture but O'Donnell was comfortable with almost anyone, highranking to druckdrivers. He spoke the language, he knew all the verses to some of the rather louche folksongs, yet he never pretended to be The Expert. One of your reviewers, an Iranian, who gave the book 3 stars, has got it wrong. This is a memoir, evoking a period when Americans roamed freely, coming into contact with a very ancient civilization which many of them couldn't pretend to understand. If the recounting of the experiences of this extraordinary American, who understood more than any of us in Shiraz at the time, appears condescending to anyone, I have to say they are missing the point.
Any brilliant travel writing is bound to upset someone, but this is a piece of writing that leaves such questions moot, they shouldn't even apply. One man's experiences, and this has some riotously funny ones, have made for a fabulous read, period.

An excellent book to read
This is an excellent book. The stories are charming and the prose a literary gem -- simple, humorous, and yet realistic. I could not stop reading it from cover to cover. The author's second book (Seven Shadows of Memory) is definitely on my list of reading.

A disappointing sequel
I was initially thrilled to discover that Green had written a sequel to "Shadows of Ashland", a novel I would recommend to anyone who enjoys the time travel genre, ala Jack Finney. Fifteen years have passed; Leo Nolan has married Jeanne and has done an admirable job of helping to raise her son, Adam, now twenty-one. Adam wants to visit his natural father, Bobby, who deserted Jeanne before Adam was even born. The dustjacket copy details how "Leo decides that he had better visit the man first, and so he embarks on another trip into the past, from which he returns changed again." Had Bobby been forced to abandon his wife and unborn son? Had he done something so awful that only, say, a physical trip into the past by Leo might reveal and perhaps correct it? Are we in for another adventure back in time, perhaps to explore Jeanne's family? The answer is a disappointing no. In "St. Patrick's Bed", Leo never physically travels back in time, his trips to the past are all narrative reminiscences about the various members of his family, the events of his marriage and of problems the couple are encountering in having a child of their own. Leo's narrative is essentially a series of sentimental meditations on love, family and nostalgia, along with way too many (ofttimes tedious) descriptions of the motels he stays at and the food he eats during his drive. His eventual encounter with Bobby is bland. A minor sub plot involving the reappearance of Leo's father was a missed opportunity, woefully underused, with the pay off at the end of the book being too little, too late. Green's prose voice is as friendly and inviting as before, but the story is slight, offering no real conflict - a waste of his characters. Would I read this book again? Probably not.

A worthy sequel to Shadows in Ashland!
Several years ago I read a new author, Terence Green, when his book Shadows in Ashland was published. I was intrigued by the family history presented in this book as the main character, Leo Nolan, sets out to find his uncle who left home during the Depression and was never heard from again. During his journey Leo, a resident of Canada, finds himself in Ashland where he not only finds out about his uncle's life but meets a woman Jeanne and her young son Adam who will become an integral part of his future.

The years have passed and in his newst book Green continues the story of Leo. Once again living in Canada, Leo is now married to Jeanne and the father of her son Adam. At 21, Adam is a fine young man who sudedenly exprsses an interest in meeting his biolgocial father. Leo sensing that Adam may be hurt by either finding or not finding his father, decides to try and find this man without Adam's knowledge.

While traveling first to Ohio, the last place Jeanne knew Adam's father lived, Leo has time to reflect on the male influnces in his life which include his father Tommy Nolan, grandfather Bampi and cherished uncles. He also spends time reflecting on the death of hia biological son Aidan from his previous marriage and his dreams and wishes for Adam as he is about to embark on adulthood. Finally in the most moving parts of the book, Leo comes to terms with his and Jeannes inability to have a child from their marriage. And as we read on we wonder what the outcome of this journey ultimately will be for Leo as well as Adam.

Terence Green's plot, characters and writing envelop the reader from the first page to the last one. And if readers find themselves ending the book with tears as I did, it is because the Nolans have become part of your family and you hate to leave them. I look forward to reading more books by Terence Green but now am content to read his second book Witness to Life which also discusses another aspect of this families history.

A LOVE STORY TO LIFE'S PASSAGES
We first meet Leo Nolan in "Shadow of Ashland" seeking knowledge of his lost uncle, Jack Radey. Knowledge is found, along with a lovely woman and her young son. Leo marries Jeanne displacing she and Adam to his home in Canada, leaving behind Adam's father. Now, 15 years later, in an act of protection, Leo feels he must anonymously meet the "other" father, prior to Adam doing so. The poignant trip back to Ashland conjurs sentimental memories memorialized beautifully by the prose of Terence Green. As his passenger, the reader delves into cobwebbed rememberances of drive-ins, childhood mayhem, and life's non predictiability. You are never disappointed in Leo's sidetrips....the magical moments lie there in quivering wait.

Terence Green is one of my top ten favorite male authors. This is a vast compliment, as I am somone who has read thousands of books, multiple genres, bevy of writers. His simple, quiet, sentimental style mesmerizes my eyes and heart to each page; each circumstance; each emotion. That he grips his reader san gratuitous violence and sex, multiple plot twists, or grapic language is a tribute to his abilities. There is romance, there are debacles, there are twists of thought, and there is language, but all are subtle, precise, palatable, and genuine.

"St Patrick's Bed" is a love song to rituals past and present; to memories enjoyed or endured; to choices desired or willed. It chants of love in all it's forms, and the music sings to each reader's soul. It is a gift to you. I would advice splurging!

I thought this book was really good, adding a third demension to Hunter's stories: space. It had a tragic ending, but after reading #14, I don't feel so bad now.I would have normally given this one a four star rating, but i really liked the space scenes.

Lame techno-adventure
This was the first and only "Wingman" book I've ever read, a sort of straight, pulp techno-thriller series set in the aftermath of WWIII. (The US is still picking itself up after narrowly surviving an overwhelming Soviet attack; colluding politicians undermine the bare victory while the nation's splintering into numerous, autonomous zones further prevent it from taking action; global disintegration allows the rise of numerous freemens' armies and an every-man-for-himself mentality). Hawk Hunter was one of the US's most gifted fighter pilots prior to the war, and of course its only chance for survival in its aftermath. Flying the only known remaining F-16 fighter, and hitched up to the Pacific American Air Force (who largely fly lesser planes like the F-4 and the Tigershark) Hunter remains the only pilot capable of beating back America's enemies. In this episode (I mean, this book), Hunter flies to North Africa on the trail of the evil Viktor Robotov, a Soviet madman largely responsible for defiling both Hawk's nation and his girlfriend. Leaving Casablanca, Hawk links up with a group of British adventurers, self-styled modern knights in a crusade against a shadowy warlord known as Lucifer. All of North Africa seems desperate to get out of the way as Lucifer amasses a huge army to conquer that part of the world. Hawk quickly realizes that the feared Lucifer is actually Robotov in disguise, but that his army and his threats are very real. Against that, the modern knights claim the intact, if powerless derelict of an American aircraft carrier, planning to tow it across the Mediterranean to become a floating airbase from which to fly against Lucifer at the mouth of the Suez in what promises to be an epic battle....

...that never comes off. Because I enjoyed "War Heaven" I thought I could also like at least one of the "Wingman" books, but this one spoiled me for the whole series. None of the characters are any fun - even though called the "Wingman" Hunter flies and does just about everything himself, and the rest of the characters walk around like bloodless robots. The evil Robotov, when we finally meet him here, is the biggest cheat of all - just a moron in a dark robe ala Darth Sidious, the sort of dumb jerk who blames other people for his own mistakes and has to shout everything. Then there are the military details and the action - the techno details are pretty thin and the air combat not quite thrilling. Maloney details the action as if it's already happened and this is just the post-game show. Other technothrillers are out there with less impluasible plots (not involving post WWIII war torn lands ala "Red Dawn") with more accurate detail, so why buy any of these books?

A great book for everyone
Hey, i read The Lucifer Crusade 3 years ago. I began reading it and was immedietally captivated by Mack Maloneys great writing style. He takes things and puts them into situations which you will never expect. Then when i finished the book, i stoped reading the Wingman series. Last year or so, i came upon the book and decided to buy the first few. After reading the first 2 books and then The Lucifer Crusade again, i was able to further understand the book. I loved it even more. Now i am continuing to read the series. Still however, so far i think that the Lucifer Crusade is easily one of the best if not the best wingman book. I would HIGHLY reccomend it to anyone interested in reading about cool airplanes, awesome battles which last for pages and pages, and hot love scenes. This book had everything. As you see, i give it 5 stars (although it deserves 100). If you are feeling like taking a chance, get messy, grab the Lucifer Crusade and have the best time of your life reading. I hope this helps you find what you are looking for.

Lots of action and intrigue
This is the third book in the Wingman series and it is right up there with the best of them. Lots of flying, lots of action, weirdness, sex, ghosts ... you name it. I realized about halfway through that this book, in a way, prophesized the Persian Gulf War. (It was written about a year before.) A lot of fun and awelcome change from more stuffy books of the action-adventure genre.

Beautifully done; Not complete for all collectors
A beautifully executed publication, however as a collector of Victorian Trade Cards, I was greatly dissapointed NOT to find ANY of the cards in my collection listed. I would have expected at least ONE to have been referred to, but the items in the book are mostly geared to the collector of tobacco insert cards. If this is your thing, this is your book. Forget it if you are more geared to Tradecard collecting

Informative Book about the History of Tobacco Cards
The book is great historical lesson. Reading about the history of the Tobacco cards has been very informative. The writers have dedicated many hours to thorough research of this topic.

Well done reference guide to tobacco cards even for a novice
Colorful and interesting pictures provide an easy to use reference guide. The text is clear and concise with indepth information on value and various other aspects of collecting. I would highly recommend this book for serious collectors, antique dealers and those interested this aspect of American history.

lots of info: probably in there somewhere
while this book appears to exhaustively document the program, I could rarely find helpful information when I ran into specific problems while using the program. I'm currently looking for a book with better clarity and organization

Supervisor Drafting & Graphics Services, City of Winnipeg
I have used Terence Shumakers books for teaching for the last eight years. This latest one covering AutoCAD 2000 is no exception. It is one of the best books to teach from, excellent subject explanations and easy to follow samples exercises. I do disagree with the order Terence follows, but it is easily overcome and does not reflect on the book its self.

An excellent book for beginners and intermediate level.
I have had a chance to review sections of this publication in our local library. I found that it is truly a well written book with lots of exercises and helpful hints for the drafting/design discipline. However, I did not find anything on 3D modeling. Perhaps, you can mention a similar publication (same authors?) with the 3D modeling feature, treated with the same details. Thanks for the info. Is this book available in Toronto, Canada? (bookstore please?).

Basics of Transesophageal Echocardiography
Published in Hardcover by Churchill Livingstone (15 January, 1995)
Author: Terence D. Rafferty
Amazon base price: $99.00
Used price: $80.00
Average review score:

Limited in scope
This book is probably okay for the "casual" transesophageal echocardiographer, such as the anasthesiologist assessing global function in the OR, but has little useful insight for serious clinical echo applications.

Simply Indispensable !!!
I am a medical researcher in Hong Kong and this book is simply indispensable ! THE BEST text on the topic. Dr Rafferty is one of the foremost experts in the field of echocardiography in the world and it is great that he is willing to put it some much effort into the book and share his years of research and practical experience in the area with everyone. I strongly recommend it.

Excellent quality is in the genius simplicity of teaching
This book is the best example how the most complicated and originally unknown things can become a clear cut understanding. Obviously, the Author did not limit himself to the review of things written before him. It is a combination of previous knowledge with giant personal material , those were processed, carefully screened and introduced in a way of simplicity. It is written by someone who perfectly understand the subject of the discussion. It is written by someone who went himself through the long and difficult process of learning in practice, what seems to be an easy description of the procedure. Transesophageal echocardiography appeared to be of a great value for cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists and intensivists. However, the training is not widely introduced yet in the Medical Schools and in the Residency Programs. This book can certainly fill the educational gap for those who are on the learning curve. Systematic approach of the book allowes to go through the steps of the procedure in the same fasion as the learning itself - metodically and simple. This is a great book, that perhaps could be introduced as a Textbook of Basics of Transesophageal Echocardiography.
